Immediately no. I upgraded to this after using an A50 for 3 years. This phone is heavy and with an awkwardly big bezel. It's not easy to hold onto or carry so good luck taking pictures. They didn't include a charger plug-in, just a cable, so I had to go back to store and buy one. Samsung A54 also does not support wireless charging. The call quality was surprising and upsetting. I tried calling multipe people, both from the phone itself and with Facebook Messenger and each time time the sound crackled and chirped. To make matters worse there's no headphone jack. I have nothing to compare this to, but especially with the huge difference in price I'm starting to believe that this is an inferior version of the phone packaged for StraightTalk users. If I'm mistaken, I can't imagine paying 500$ for such a low quality device. As it is, I wouldn't suggest for anyone to buy this phone at either price point. Maybe the funniest part of this was that we bought a temporary phone for my son for 50 bucks at the same time, and that 50 dollar phone out-performs my A54 in every concievable way. I couldn't deal with it for more than a couple of hours before resetting it to its factory settings and putting it back in the box. I cant return this fast enough.

A solid choice

The quick low-down is that this midrange phone represents decent value; It performs well, has a great camera, and basically all of the features you could really want even from the flagship top-tier model, but the cost cutting measures necessary to offer it at such a price are quite obvious and make you wonder if you'd rather pay just a tiny bit extra to have a better product.Starting off with the most upsetting thing is that although the front and rear are glass, the body of the phone is plastic. This phone is already quite thick and quite heavy so I can see why a metal construction may have made it even heavier as well as more expensive but I think for the price, it wouldn't be unfair to expect metal construction. This phone is already quite thick and quite heavy so I can see why a metal construction may have made it even heavier as well as more expensive but I think for the price, it wouldn't be unfair to expect metal construction. I am also disappointed by the fact that the SIM card tray on the top of the phone does not sit flush. This is how it was out of the box, and simply wont sit completely flush which is disappointing especially as this phone, although not expensive, was not "cheap". The fingerprint scanner is also a little slower than the ultrasonic sensor you get in the newer flagship models, and slower than that of what other non-underscreen fingerprint scanners can offer, but it is perfectly usable. The lack of any fast charging (25W only) might prove to be a pain for some people. Now moving onto the good bits, of which there are many! The screen is fantastic. Crystal clear, good colour reproduction, all of the usual advantages of an OLED panel; you get the idea. Its fantastic. The bezels are thicker than other phones and this is a consequence of having to use a cheaper screen assembly, and when viewing a white screen the colour can shift from warm to blue even from only small changes in angle. This isn't obviously noticeable but something you don't tend to see in some OLED panels. It has some decent power behind the scenes aswell, never really stuttering, and with the 120Hz display it feels silky smooth for basically everything I've thrown at it. The dual-firing speakers (top of the display and the bottom) make media consumption really enjoyable, and they sound great! The cameras are excellent and really do come quite close to flagship products. Of course they'll be superseded again by something infinitely better but for the moment they are truly excellent. Sharp, quick, and good colour reproduction make media capture on this a pleasure.Overall I am very happy with it. It might not be the absolute best value at this price but it is certainly very good!

Better than your average mid-range phone!

I was looking for a phone that closely matched my requirements for replacing my old phone but could also function as a work phone when needed. With Samsung this is easy with Secure Folder creating that separation between work & play. Here is a summary of what I’ve enjoyed so far / not so much.Battery – This has been great so far, I had it on for over 2 days with medium use without having to charge. With turning on the battery saver mode (limits to 85% charge), this is around one – one and a half days.Screen – Extremely bright and vivid display, flows great with the adaptive screen refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This seems to be more like the display on recent flagships from Samsung (S22/ 23). This seems to be more like the display on recent flagships from Samsung (S22/ 23). Get some occasional screen tearing when using the phone at speed, but this is normal with adaptive screen refresh rates. Only other complaint would be that the screen is quite reflective when off, but otherwise great screen.Rear-facing Cameras – From experience from utilising indoors / outdoors, the performance varies. Indoor low-light photos are really good for the fact the phone is a mid-range phone from Samsung. The scene optimiser as-per other Samsung phones blows out specific colours when taking photos outside, i.e. green grass in the sunlight, therefore I’d recommend disabling scene optimisation setting from within the camera. The zoom is good and provide ability to get decent zoom for lecture halls/ conference events to see text clearly. The image stabilisation as noted by Samsung is decent and works very well for the price range this phone is within.Front-facing Camera – Good quality camera but would recommend adjusting the smoothing function to your preference. Otherwise, the camera provides accurate, decent quality selfies and deals well with multiple people in the photo.Build-Quality – The phone itself it a lot thicker than I expected, but that doesn’t distract you from the fact it is a well-built and solid phone with decent water-resistance (so I won’t worry about the phone getting a bit wet when navigating in Scottish weather)Audio Quality – Both Bluetooth and physical speaker are good and consistent. The audio quality isn’t too blown out at mid-range to mid-high, full volume on the speaker however can be a little bit distorted.Phone features – The fingerprint reader so far has been quick, accurate and easy to set-up (much easier than the A53 previous generation phone).

Great phone with great features

It does everything you need a phone to do and more, and I am sure to be happy with my purchase.

Remarkably disappointing for the Samsung pedigree

My explanation of star ratings is given at the end. I purchased the A54 in early May 2023. I've used the device for over a month, preferring to provide an objective insight, instead of initial reactions.Given I last purchased a smartphone around 5 years ago I expected awesome improvements. Samsung seriously let me down. The camera controls are mediocre. You have to by a below high-end device to get dual SIM and uSD card capability. Neither of those were the case with my previous phone. On top of that, the font selection is pathetic, just a couple of unexceptional sans serif fonts, no serif fonts (e.g. Times New Roman style) and no dyslexic-friendly fonts. If you want those you have to pay a third party for the privilege. The search facility in the fonts selection ... MoreMy explanation of star ratings is given at the end. If you want those you have to pay a third party for the privilege. The search facility in the fonts selection doesn't allow you to search by price, making finding a free serif font, apparently, impossible. Then there's the headphone socket. Yeah, right, no 3.5mm socket. This is an example of the smartphone industry behaving irresponsibly through forcing customers to spend money on replacing perfectly serviceable 3.5mm headphones (or to buy an adaptor). Samsung's preferred solution is, of course, users spending even more of their money on wireless ear buds/headphones. Seriously, Samsung‽ If users want to make that decision it's their decision to make, not for you to force it upon users. Through this decision Samsung are encouraging the on-going devastation of the planet through the mining of minerals for batteries to power the wireless devices. All because they *think* users don't want to have a phone thick enough to accommodate a 3.5mm socket? I've got news for you, my last phone was 7.8mm thick, the A54 is 8.9mm thick, (excluding the cameras, which take it to 11mm) so there's ample room for a 3.5mm socket. Of course, with the loss of the 3.5mm socket the ability to operate as a FM radio is also lost (shock, yes, sometimes you might be in an area where the data signal is insufficient and may want to use the FM radio).Clearly Samsung's priorities are: forcing consumers to spend more for less and being irresponsible towards the planet. Then there's the music apps. Instead of including their own music app, Samsung Music, Samsung for some reason elected to include YT Music as default, which expects to have an Internet connection. Sorry guys but you made another error here; if folks want uSD card storage there's a good chance it is for not just photos, but also for music.Oh, about apps. Yeah, when setting up the phone I was asked which of a few optional apps I would like to have installed as part of the setup. Those apps not being of any interest to me I declined, only to discover they had been installed after all. If a user makes such a decision it should be honoured, not disregarded. Also, when installing new apps, why do they appear on a new blank screen, instead of being put on to the first available blank space? I've had to delete that new blank screen far too many times to be happy about it.Whilst I don't use biometrics, the options are fewer than on my previous phone. That is not progress. The default (Google) Messages app wouldn't allow for SMS delivery receipts. The alternative does, but it shouldn't have been so hard to get SMS messages working properly. Then there's the 'put apps into deep sleep' feature. A nice idea, if it worked sensibly. Several times it has placed important apps into deep sleep which should not be there. This despite having already told the phone that those apps are to be excluded! This includes the paid-for anti-virus protection app I have installed. No, this isn't a computer error (there's no such thing, although AIs are starting to get more prevalent, AIs have ultimately been programmed by humans); this is human error in design/configuration.Are there features I do like? Things which have improved above and beyond where I (and the industry) was at a five years ago? Yes, I like being able to record the screen without the need for a third party app and the speakers appear louder than my last phone. The three cameras are reasonably good, however the control options (e.g. resolution, which is limited to picture ratios) are quite limited and photos don't always appear as sharp as is reasonable to expect from a 50MP camera. These do not, however, make up for the numerous design decision failings. The feeling here is that Samsung chose the cameras for their numbers, rather than working on producing great images. What's really daft is that Samsung's decision to remove uSD card storage years ago meant I switched to competitors, and whilst I'm back the lack of dual SIM and uSD card storage ability in the more premium Samsung phones means I went for the A54, instead of a more costly product. So, Samsung, your decisions mean I spent less. Thanks for that, but if you want me to spend more you're going to have to make more intelligent and more sensible decisions (if someone is prepared to pay for a premium phone, it better have all the features, why Samsung think leaving out 3.5mm sockets, dual-SIM and uSD card slots from the premium phones is a mystery).Explanation of star ratings:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ = significantly above expectations⭐⭐⭐⭐ = above expectations⭐⭐⭐= as expected⭐⭐ = below expectations⭐ = significantly below expectationsAt the start of reviewing a product/service it gets three stars. It is up to the product/service to gain more stars by exceeding expectations, or to lose stars by failing to meet expectations. Whilst there are a few redeeming features of the A54 5G they simply do not make up for the numerous failings. Failings which a company with the longevity of Samsung really should not be exhibiting. I may be back to Samsung this time, but they’re going to have to do better to encourage me to stay.

The best budget phone ever

So I currently had the iPhone SE to yes it’s still relatively new which released in 2020. It is three years old but the battery is very very bad the battery is 1800 meaning it would last like two hours and recently I have been charging my phone three times a day because of how bad the battery is. The screen is so tiny. I had a lot of ice strains and it’s just a very old looking phone people in the public assume that I have a iPhone 8 or even a iPhone 7 because it is exactly the same. Only difference is the fact that the Apple logo is in the middle so I then searched to get a new phone. My first option was to get a iPhone 11 because it was a budget phone but the downside is the storage the storage it’s not expandable and 64 GB is very little for what I need and it’s ... MoreSo I currently had the iPhone SE to yes it’s still relatively new which released in 2020. The battery is very bad in last like three hours. Yes the phone is still knew but remember a lot of phones even if it’s new and kept in a new box, the battery will drain because it has not been used in. The phone has been released over four years and it is not a good idea to get a phone like that when the battery will drain so I decided to get this a54 because I have used Samsung before, and I wanted to pre-order this phone, but 700 was too much and out of my budget. Lucky for me. The phone was on sale for 630 and I got it and I was shocked it was the best phone I have ever gotten. I love the fact that it is a big screen. It looks exactly like the S 23 except for the bezel. The. Bezel are small but it is not noticeable. I love the fact that it is USB c you have two speakers you have great camera. You also got 1tb storage expandable storage, which is the best thing, because I will never have to worry about having less storage and the phone was very very smooth I’ve not found any glitch. It is basically a flagship. Probably the best thing I’ve ever gotten in. I will be using this phone for a long time if you want to but you think this is the best option for you.
