I bought and returned this phone in less than a month of use, but not because it's not great, because it certainly is but ultimately the cost to feature wasn't worth it.I've had an S21 Ultra 256 GB for over 2 years now, but I figured I'd hop into an S23 ultra 512 GB as I was running out of space, and for some reason backing up files to my PC is very slow, which became annoying so I figured why not upgrade for more space, and as a professional photographer/cinematographer, the camera features it offers.My first impressions of the phone after unboxing is that it looks and feels very luxurious, the green color is spectacular, and the phone is BIG. From there it becomes less impressive. The additional size and weight started hurting my hand in less than a day of ... MoreI bought and returned this phone in less than a month of use, but not because it's not great, because it certainly is but ultimately the cost to feature wasn't worth it.I've had an S21 Ultra 256 GB for over 2 years now, but I figured I'd hop into an S23 ultra 512 GB as I was running out of space, and for some reason backing up files to my PC is very slow, which became annoying so I figured why not upgrade for more space, and as a professional photographer/cinematographer, the camera features it offers.My first impressions of the phone after unboxing is that it looks and feels very luxurious, the green color is spectacular, and the phone is BIG. From there it becomes less impressive. The additional size and weight started hurting my hand in less than a day of use, especially after I put a case on it.The camera is fast, zooms smoothly in photo and video modes, but the image quality is at most 10-15% better than the S21 Ultra, and the in-between Zoom modes (like 2x) for photos are borderline unusable (which they may fix with an update).I never used the 108 MB camera feature the S21 came with but I wanted to see what the new 200 megapixel camera can do on the S23. While the photos exhibit great detail I quickly realized that the 512 GB version would still not be enough even if I don't use the 200 megapixel camera regularly, I'd be running into the same problem in less than 2 years that I had with my S21 Ultra. Oh how I miss the days of putting in whatever size micro SD card I want, and the ease of backing up those files off the phone when needed.The S23 ultra comes with the S Pen which I thought was a cool feature and I got some use out of it, however you can also get an S Pen with the S21 Ultra and just use a case that can hold the pen which I'm currently doing (although it doesn’t offer the auto select subject feature the S23 does).The battery life on the S23 Ultra is absolutely amazing, it can get through a whole day no problem even for a power user. The fast charging is exceptional over the S21 Ultra as well.All of this being said I still considered keeping the S23 ultra even after accepting that I paid $1,400 for a phone that is only marginally better than the current phone I had (and also has less ram), but the nail in the coffin was when I went to use the 3x zoom on the camera and there was already a dust spot in the lens. I immediately began the return process.Ultimately I feel these phones are getting too big and heavy, and to the point of diminishing returns so the cost for what you're getting is not worth it. I can live without a removable battery pack but I don't subscribe to this notion that in order to get twice as much memory you have to spend $300+ more when a micro SD card of the same size would be a quarter of the cost. BRING BACK MICRO SD CARD SLOTS!

This, combined with a refined design language that makes for a completely different feel despite the upgrade from the S22 Ultra to the S23 Ultra appearing to be incremental.Performance-wise, the jump is as big as it gets. Gaming performance has increased greatly over the entirety of Samsung's lineup in the past with the only concern being the power behaviour. Drawing up to 6.4 on average in heavier games is quite concerning considering other phones draw significantly less. But this isn't to say they haven't improved, getting a 50 - 60 frames per second at 6.4 watts average is much better than the 25 - 30 frames per second at more 7 watts I was getting with their previous phones. In everyday usage, not only the battery life is almost on par with my testing with Apple's Pro Max line (12 through to 14), but the phone runs a lot cooler in daily tasks; I found YouTube playback on the 5G network to be a lot more stable and cooler compared to the S22 Ultra or even the Z Fold4.Camera performance was not something I had expected to have such a big improvement. Yes, our world can be filled with marketing making us make biased decisions, but I believe Samsung was not exaggerating with their new wide module. I initially joked about the 200mp sensor as just another gimmick considering the sensor size hasn't vastly increased compared to the competition, but after using it in the real world, I was quickly proven wrong. Not only the 200mp mode is usable with adequate HDR, but the 12mp binned images were impressively void of oversharpening compared to the S22 Ultra. Skin tones have also vastly improved with the AI treatment being minimally invasive with a tasteful skin softening while keeping surface imperfections intact. Think of a detailed portrait that doesn't look gritty but is presentable. This improvement in processing and colour science is also transferred to all the other lenses.The last but probably the most important thing is media consumption. The first thing I noticed after setting up my phone was the speakers. From the S7, Samsung's speakers had been questionable (outside of their foldable line-up which has very performant speakers) but this year, they have redeemed themselves with flagship-grade speakers. The sub-bass performance is not industry-leading, but the mids and upper mids are very well represented. Treble could be a little harsh at times, but the speaker performance is significantly more pleasant than other Android handsets. Distortion is still present at higher volumes, but this is expected on all smartphones at volumes beyond 70%. Comparing to the competition, the speakers can not be directly compared to Apple's speakers - as their tonality is completely different - but purely from their performance, Samsung has finally caught up.Overall, the days of me pointing my friends towards the iPhone over the Samsung is over. In fact, I have been trying to reel them in from their decision to move to Galaxy again. I trust the S23 Ultra during my double shifts to not require a visit to the wall for power and trust it will perform well when I need it. This review is extremely brief, and its positive facade only covers the most notable changes I've found. There is a lot more I can discuss, but in hindsight, this is not the platform to explore deeper. Samsung has finally done it this year and have delivered a not just satisfactory product, but a revolution in their S line in the right direction.

The Android OS is much more mature and less buggy that it used to be about 5 years ago or so. The key to my success with the phone longevity is: 1a. The mind set that I NEVER, EVER, EVER put anything in my front right pocket except for the phone itself; 1b, I NEVER EVER EVER put the phone into any othe pocket or place for carrying it around, 2. Always treat the phone like what it really is, an expensive piece of delicate equipment (not getting sloppy and allowing it to fall, puttin it in precarous places, never leave it in any place that sometimes has high humidity like a bathroom while in the shower - the warranty repair folks may say it has moisture damage as high humidity may have gotten into where the connector goes, etc.), and 3. Always be careful with the care of the battery - never let it run out and always if you are ever near any power supply, keep it plugged in 24/7 to have it run on the external power and minimize battery cycling).Verizon has consistently over the years never offered the highest level of RAM for Verizon phones which is annoying (there is a 1TB RAM model of the S23 Ultra which Verizon does not offer, they only offer the 512GB model as their best). The only negative I can currently offer on this model is that there is no separate storage for a Micro SD Card (my previous Note 10+ had 512GB internal storage and a 512GB MicrSD Card), but if the internal mamory is enough, that does of course have much higher speeds. After measuring my current storage usage however, my total usage of both internal and external storage was about 400GB, less than the total offered by Verizon on the 512GB model, and I only really took the dive because my Note 10+ started acting a little wonky and I do 100% need it for work.For the last couple of phone upgrades, I have used the Samsung Smartswitch utility (why keep re-setting everything up if it is stable and likes the way you work, unless you are just playing with it like a new toy instead of an important tool used for work and play?), and in this case Verizon also offers a way of moving all of your data from one phone to another, which is confusing regarding which would be better or non-conflicting (rather than Samsung Smartswitch). I was going to use the Verizon utility and then afterward run the Samsung Smartswitch utility just to play ti safe.... So I took the dive and used the Verizon way of switching over all the data (first). I can happily report that you will find that the Verizon method of switching the phone data from the old to the new unit actually as part of it's process, launches the Samsung SmartSwitch utility to do the work - and the SmartSwitch utility actually also copies all of the MicrSD Card contents from the old phone onto the new phone's internal storage in a subdirectory named MicroSDBackup or the like. In comparing very carefully the data on the old phone vs. the new phone after the process, I thought there were some photos missing from the gallery on the new phone but then realized it was actually things shown on the new phone that were not shown on the old phone! - a few photos on the new phone displayed in the gallery but were NOT displayed on the old phone's gallery as it was not showing photos from a few folders that do not normally contain photos! Also, before you turn in any older phone with a MicroSD Card for a trade-in, do not forget to go through the steps first to DECRYPT the Micro SD Card ON THE OLD PHONE if you had encrypted it, if you want to just keep the Micro SD Card as a backup - as the encryption is phone specific and cannot be unencrypted on any other device (once you not longer have the old device, that encrypted Micro SD Card is useless to you (and the encryption/decryption process is uniquely individual phone-specific) unless you want to just reformat the Micro SD Card).Trying to add as much information here as possible - I have not had enough time owning the new phone to be able to give any in-depth anbalysis as far as anny negatives, other than the fact that it does the same as the old phone but considerably faster. You will note that when using the utility to move everything from the old phone to the new phone, that if you have any custom launcher (I use Nova 7 prime), the configuration for some of the home screen widgets are lost (they are still in place but do not display properly), but that is very minor and easily fixed by manual reconfiguration. This has alsways been the issue with moving the data over so the screen widget config must be stored somewhere that cannot be copied from one phone tro another. You may find that once everything is copied from the old to the new phone, that a bunch of apps and configuration looks like it is mssing - but in fact after everything is transferred from the old phone to the new one - on the new phone, there is alot of processing and installing in the background still taking place and it will take a little while for everything to reappear, but it will. (This took about 20 minutes on my new phone - just let it run it's course without any kiind of interrruption (e.g., DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE while this is taking place and you will be Ok))!(FYI I have over 500 apps on my phone and it is heavily tweaked for maximum perfomance and battery life etc.)Hope this helps -
