The Exynos W920 Dual-Core 1.18GHz (5 nm) CPU is at the core of the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro smartwatches. A Mali G68 GPU supports the beautiful, bright, sharp and responsive touchscreen. The Galaxy Watch 5 is equipped with 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a very nicely fabricated 45mm diameter, very strong yet lightweight black titanium watchcase compared to the Watch 5s Aluminum watchcase. The case is approximately 10mm thick, or slightly less than ½”. There are two large mappable function pushbuttons on the right side of the case which also function as sensors for some of the health monitoring functions. The rotating bezel of the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is not a feature of the Galaxy Watch 5 or 5 Pro. There is a “virtual” rotating bezel functionality deployed in the touchscreen which performs in the same manner as the mechanical rotating bezel. The raised circumferential lip of watchcase above the screen provides a perfect stabilizing and guiding surface for using a finger to scroll the display with the “touch bezel”. The touch bezel works very well, and the scrolling speed is very fast with absolutely no lag. The back of the watch, which appears to be partially composite, houses the health sensors. This model has a soft black silicone watchband which tapers from 24mm at the watchcase to 19mm at the clasp. The infinitely adjustable metal clasp type closure latches magnetically. The watchband is extremely easy to adjust or readjust to the optimum fit. Owing to this watchband, I find the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to be extremely comfortable on my wrist. Samsung refers to this unique watchband as the “D-Buckle Sport Band”. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro weighs only 75 grams (2.6 ounces). The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a bright and sharp, always-on Super AMOLED touchscreen, with 450 x 450 pixel resolution and 330 PPI. The display is smaller than that which the 45mm (1.77”) case profile can actually accommodate. Although the watchcase is 45mm, the display screen measures approximately 35mm (1.37”). Resultantly there is a rather wide black bezel surrounding the round display panel. The super AMOLED display screen is protected by a sapphire crystal with a hardness rating of 29 GPa for the Watch 5 Pro, which is purported to be extremely durable and scratch resistant. The Galaxy Watch 5 (non-Pro) model has a crystal rated at 24 GPa as compared to the Galaxy Watch 4 models with displays having a hardness of 15 GPa. It appears to me that the screen is further protected from some impacts by the elevated lip surrounding the screen. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is specified to meet MIL-STD-810H which is the latest iteration of the environmental performance testing for shock, drop, temperature etc. and it also claims compliance with IP68 which pertains to ingress protection for dust, dirt, sand and liquid. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro are water resistant to 5 ATM. Five atmospheres is equivalent to 169.498’ of water. The Galaxy Watch 5 sensors are comprised of Accelerometer, Ambient Light, Compass, Gyroscope, Barometer, Heart Rate, ECG, Blood Pressure, Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (body composition and BMI) and SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation). Apparently, there is also an infrared skin temperature sensor, which is not active as yet. I can only speculate if that temperature sensor is intended for sleep monitoring applications or health monitoring functionality, which might be very prudent in this age of Covid. An electrocardiogram sensor (ECG/EKG) is possibly the most valuable function that a health and fitness smartwatch can have. It can potentially save your life by detecting the life threatening cardiac electrical abnormality atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is an irregular heartbeat condition. It is wonderful that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro includes an ECG sensor, however unless the watch is paired with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, the ECG functionality is not available. That is because Samsung’s ECG requires the installation of the Samsung Health Monitor app (not to be confused with the Samsung Health app). The Health Monitor app is only compatible with and installable upon Samsung phones. Those of us with non-Samsung phones cannot benefit from the ECG functionality. I am extremely disappointed by that. The imbedded sensors provide data for health and activity monitoring including tracking steps, sleep, heart rate and oxygen saturation. GPS functionality augments exercise activity monitoring by generating distance travelled data, and is of course essential for routing functionality for hiking, biking and related activities. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro runs Google Wear OS, Version 3.5 with Samsung’s new One UI Watch 4.5. One UI Watch 4.5 adds a full QWERTY keyboard function and enhanced telephone calling and accessibility options. There are numerous apps preloaded on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and of course there is a panoply of apps available from the Google Play Store. The preinstalled apps have a major emphasis on sports and fitness, including route tracking with GPX files. The automatic detection of various activities is a function of Samsung Health. There is a variety of highly customizable watch faces available. With both a microphone and speaker imbedded in the watch, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro supports placing and receiving phone calls, as well as voice interaction with Bixby or Google Assistant. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and GPS. I have the Bluetooth version of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and there is also an LTE cellular model. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is equipped with a WPC wireless charger terminated with a USB-C connector. A true highlight is the large battery in the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The 590 mAh Li-Ion battery will hopefully provide respectable operating times, even if it does not achieve the 80 hours of use that is claimed. Initial setup and configuration of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is relatively straightforward but includes the need to sign into a Samsung account, download and install apps and grant lots of permissions. The Galaxy Wearable app guides the setup process. There is an onboard tutorial to assist in familiarization with the watch. In addition to the Galaxy Wearable app, it is also necessary to install and configure the Samsung Health app on the smartphone. I am finding that the Samsung Health app is imposing a very significant drain on the battery of my Android smartphone. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro performs nicely. Phone and text notifications, including vibration alerts (if desired) have been reliable. Connectivity for cell calls has been stable and reliable, and phone call audio quality with the built-in speaker is clear. Cell phone app notifications on the watch is another great convenience. The touchscreen works well and is responsive, although because of the small screen size and the congestion of menu items it is sometimes difficult to precisely select an intended touch-target or make a precise adjustment (such as volume levels). Screen scrolling and swipes are absolutely fast and fluid without any annoying lag or jitter. I really like that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro uses the Google ecosystem, however I am genuinely disappointed that ECG functionality is not available to me because the required Samsung Health Monitor app is only available in the closed, proprietary Samsung ecosystem. The Galaxy Wearable app is excellent, and provides the easiest, fastest and most comprehensive means of interfacing with and managing almost every aspect of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is a very nice smartwatch which performs very well and has an attractive appearance. It has many features and functions that are genuinely helpful and useful in fitness and sports activities, in wellness tracking and in daily living as well. I believe that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro provides an excellent balance between being a pure, dedicated sports watch, and serving as an “everyday” smartwatch. I really appreciate that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a decently sized touchscreen that is incredibly bright and has excellent resolution. I am looking forward to having some long-term experience with this excellent smartwatch.

A top-notch smartwatch from Samsung

The Galaxy Watch was my favorite go-to watch from the beginning, and I always upgraded as new models were released. My annoyance flared when advertised capabilities were either missing or poorly implemented. In some cases, promised features never came to fruition, while other times they showed up but more than a year later. Because of this, a few years ago I decided to move to a Fossil Watch with LTE. One of the biggest draws for me was Fossil’s integration with Google Assistant. As someone heavily invested in the Google ecosystem, this one specific feature was a game changer for me. Even though I still like the Fossil, I decided to reverse course and give Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 5 Pro a chance. At this writing, I am now using the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro Black LTE version. This is a top-notch flagship model that offers a ton of nice features, many in the health and fitness arena, and keeping in mind that my last Galaxy Watch was a model 3. In my opinion, this watch is aesthetically much nicer looking than previous versions of the Galaxy watch; it has a premium look and feel about it. As expected, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is also noticeably more expensive than the standard version, and by a wide margin. A big draw for me moving to the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is its 80-hour battery. While I haven’t had this watch very long, thus far the battery has been pretty good. I gave it a full charge last night ending at 10:30pm, then kept it on my wrist throughout the night in bedtime(?) mode. I got out of bed around 6:30am and turned bedtime mode off. Overnight, the battery had dropped from 100% to 87%. Even though it wasn’t connected to my phone during that time period, it was connected to cellular. I used the watch throughout the day, including four 2-mile walks (which the watch considers exercise periods). I used the timer a bunch and checked the weather a good number of times. And don’t forget Google Assistant. At about 9pm that evening, remaining battery was 49%. Now, the watch face does support a good number of Complications, so I have to imagine that that impacts battery over time. There is something about the Watch 5 Pro’s watch band that I find very comfortable. It doesn’t pinch my wrist or grab my arm hair. And the band’s design makes it very easy to make minor size adjustments, unlike more traditional bands. On the downside, the band’s clasp which sits in the center of my wrist, started losing color immediately. There were scratch marks all over it, so much so that the underlying material was clearly visible. Fortunately, a black sharpie came to the rescue. I am pleased to say that the thickness of the watch turned out to be a non-issue. It doesn’t feel heavy to me, although I’m guessing that the light-weight titanium material is why. So, kudos to Samsung on a good choice of materials. Setting up the watch couldn’t have been easier - it was completed in just 40 minutes. This was followed by setting up the LTE portion. I was initially concerned that having my Fossil LTE already configured with my cellular provider would be a problem, but it only turned out to be a minor bump. I did have to rerun the LTE portion three times to remove the Fossil, but it eventually was removed from my phone company’s database and replaced with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Easy-peasy! Here are some general observations about the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Watch is very attractive: People I’m chatting with will interrupt me and ask about the watch. They all seem to like the color, and the titanium look and feel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The watch’s thickness: Yep, noticeably thicker but acceptably light. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch Band: Very comfortable to wear. I immensely like how adjustable it is. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Black Color: Very much to my liking. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ONE UI: It uses Samsung’s ONE UI Watch 4.5 atop Wear 3.5. (This is a big change from my Galaxy Watch 3 and my current Fossil, and I like it) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch Face: It’s a 1.4-inch super AMOLED with Sapphire crystal for protection ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battery: Li-Ion 590 mAh. Per the specs good for 80 hours of use ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sensors: Accelerometer, gyro, heart rate, barometer, thermometer for your body temp ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wi-Fi: 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bluetooth : Version 5.2, A2DP, LE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GPS: Yes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Internal Ram: 16GB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rotating Bezel : Sadly, no more rotating bezel. Still, it hasn’t taken long to get used to sliding my fingertip around the screen’s edge ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charger: It comes with a USB Type-C magnet charging puck, but lacks an actual charger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The face of the Watch 5 Pro is lower than the bezel by a fraction of an inch, differing from other watches where the watch’s face is flush to the top of the bezel. This recessed placement is pretty shrewd. With as many times as I’ve accidently scratched/banged my watch going through a doorway, being recessed should protect the watch face from, well, me. In the beginning of this review, I alluded to how important Google Assistant is to me. I figured with Samsung and Google’s close relationship that Google Assistant integration was a given. Well, I couldn’t get G.A to work. Plus, one of my favorite features from the Galaxy Watch 3 was its SOS ability. That too didn’t seem to work. I was very unhappy. Yet, someone at Google or Samsung must have heard my grumbling and decided to sprinkle pixie-dust on the watch while I slept. Because in trying them again the next morning, both worked perfectly. Full disclosure on the SOS feature: to activate SOS to send out an alert message, it is necessary to press the home button super quick, like 3 or 4 times within a second. I admit part of the reason I couldn’t get it to activate earlier was because I was slow pressing the home button. With all the smartwatches I’ve used over the years, this is my all-time favorite. The screen is bright and very readable, and the watch is easy to set up and thus far to maintain. It handshakes transparently with my Samsung Fold 3 smartphone, and the Wear app sitting on the phone is well thought out. Hmm, I wonder if it supports the Audible app!

Big Improvement in Several Areas

I believe if the watch was equal or less responsive than the Watch 3 then the removal of the dial would be an issue, but I am proud to say that the Watch5 Pro is much more responsive, especially when receiving a notification. I believe if the watch was equal or less responsive than the Watch 3 then the removal of the dial would be an issue, but I am proud to say that the Watch5 Pro is much more responsive, especially when receiving a notification. I used the dial mostly to initiate the viewing of notifications that delayed in displaying. Notifications are much faster to load and the viewing of those notifications are much easier for someone with aging eyes (I am far sighted and do wear medium strength reading glasses). I think most of the software benefits has come from the move from Tizen to Wear OS. One thing that stands out to me is the texting capability on the watch itself. It was about impossible on my older Watch 3 but on the Watch5 Pro it has the swipe texting which works very well so it is a huge step forward in this area. The battery is another big improvement although I will say the Samsung line of watches have always had much better battery life than other watches, but with the Watch5 Pro the battery life is not in days a required everyday charge. Obviously if you use the always on display you will have a couple of days life vs not using always on display will allow double that (depending on notifications and workouts also.) The last major upgrade I will mention is the D-Buckle band (this is one of the band options when purchasing.) If you are like me and very particular about the amount of pressure and location of your watch, then this band is the one for you. I think of it like a belt that uses holes to achieve the proper tightness, but one hole is too tight and one hole over is too loose. This band eliminates that issue and is by far the best band I have ever had on a watch. I have been using the Watch5 Pro for a couple of months and I have no buyer's remorse at all.

28 August 2022

A little background. I’ve had smartwatches, many with LTE, since they first arrived years ago.

11 October 2022

This is my 3rd Samsung watch. My first was a Gear S3, second was a Watch 3 and now a Watch5 Pro. I can honestly say that the watch has gotten better with each iteration. I was initially worried about this purchase as it contained the removal of the front face dial that served as a functional slider essentially, but I now feel that my worry wasn't warranted.

So glad I decided to purchase this watch, after using one of the smaller fitness style watches I wanted one that did more and this certainly does. It's a nice slim lightweight design, and having always struggled with watches to fit my very small wrists this is perfect and very comfortable to wear. The health features are fantastic, sleep tracking, heart rate and steps I often look at and seems very accurate to me. Having a health condition which can be affected by my quality of sleep this watch certainly helps me track that and help to make improvements to my sleep. Its extremely beneficial to me for work as I can check emails, texts and calls without having to check them on my phone and reply to anything important straight from the watch itself. Little features like having a calculator on there really help in the work place. After a 9 hour shift at work I do find that when I come home I need to put the watch on charge, but it's charges up to full very quickly so I don't need to have it off for long. There is many customisation features for the watch face which is great and currently I have it cycling through my own photos which I set up on my phone, which is a nice personal touch. You can also download quite a lot of additional apps through the play store on the watch itself. It's definitely hard wearing as I have accidentally banged it a few times whilst at work and there is not a mark on it so the quality of the screen is great. Overall I'm very pleased with this watch does everything I wanted plus more, and would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get a smart watch that this is ideal for many, from anyone looking for full fitness tracking and health tracking or even just as a watch for taking calls replying to messages, using contactless payments, and simple for just telling the time. Great piece of tech

Classy, intuitive and excellent functionality

Having replaced my Galaxy Watch (2018) with this model, I can say that I'm extremely happy. I decided on this purchase primarily due to the ECG and blood pressure feature due to some ongoing health concerns. Special thanks to Harvey Norman Launceston for enabling me to purchase this 10 days ahead of us official release when I just went in to see if it might suit my need and instead ended up walking out the door with it. I was very concerned about battery life initially with the switch to Gear OS from Tizen but after 10 days use so far, am happy to report that I get 3 days use on average with a little left over to spare. I was very concerned about battery life initially with the switch to Gear OS from Tizen but after 10 days use so far, am happy to report that I get 3 days use on average with a little left over to spare. Not as good as the 5 days between charges on my earlier watch (when new), but pretty decent none the less considering that multiple ECG and blood pressure readings were taken throughout as well as constant heart rate monitoring. The watch is a delight to use, integrates and functions faultlessly with my S22 Ultra and delivers clear, easily read and responded to notifications. Operation is smooth and buttery without a hint of lag or hesitation and the new style band is a nifty, secure, comfortable and easily set design. The new watch band material (rather than that of my earlier watch) does not seem to react with my arm and leave a welt which is also a positive. The display is bright, easily read, has a great resolution and as is typical of Samsung devices in my experience; second to none. One thing I do miss over my original watch though, is the rotating bezel. I'm afraid that the choice to move away from this is a design miss on Samsung's part. The capacitive, digital alternative of running a finger around the periphery of the screen isn't as remotely intuitive, functional, effective, refined or easy to use as you end up touching other elements of the screen in the process. I'm not sure of the logic in removing what was a signature component of this series of watches, one that made usage a breeze and one that galaxy watch owners in this format of watch had come to love. The new method on this watch is not nearly as precise and no use with gloves or wet hands. Sorry Samsung; but a significant design miss. That said, the watch is still a delight to use, as you can just swipe as you would on a phone to get to/from where you need to go. Updating, app choices and integration are better overall than the Tizen watch was, though watch faces are a little sparse at present compared to Tizen. Overall, a fantastic piece of kit and I am extremely happy with my purchase. The black version looks a little "cheap" to my eye for a wearable such as this and at this price point (particularly without the bezel), but that's subjective and others will see it differently. I don't use the running, etc features and so can't comment on those. But nice job Samsung (deletion of bezel excepted) If you are after a classy looking, fully functional smart watch and fitness tracker, aren't an invested member of that fruit named company and need something to help keep track of your ticker, this watch may just be for you. ECG reports are easily exported printed in A4, or even emailed to your doctor straight from your phone in a heart beat. ECG and Blood Pressure does require Samsung Health installed I believe (no issue if you're a Samsung user) and the integration between the watch and phone is impressive, straight forward and completely intuitive. Very happy with my purchase.

Not a believer of smart watches, this device has changed my mind, and now I find myself recommending it to friends and family (or whoever seeks advice.) I have been using it connected to my phone, a Microsoft Surface Duo 2, and I can say the Samsung Watch 5 Pro has been a perfect companion. Besides being aware of the date and time, I can make and receive calls with ease, read text messages effortlessly, check my heart rate, plan workouts, as well as receive notifications and encouragements to move and keep moving, and much more. Besides being aware of the date and time, I can make and receive calls with ease, read text messages effortlessly, check my heart rate, plan workouts, as well as receive notifications and encouragements to move and keep moving, and much more. This watch is very easy to operate and customize to your needs and preferences using its touch enabled interface. I have been wearing it almost every day, I only take it off it when going to the shower, or when doing some extra dirt work in the garden or when charging it. Hold a minute, yes! it is water resistant, and you can even swim with it, but I prefer to not wear it while in the shower. I also didn’t wear it a couple of times at night during the first days of use, I felt the rubber band getting too hot and too much sweat around my wrist that I had to take the watch off (while exercising it would get even wetter.) This is my first rubber band watch, so it took me a few days to feel comfortable wearing it, and now I don’t have complaints exercising with it. This device comes with LTE and depending on which carrier you’ve got, you can get a new number on it or have it as a duplicate of your cell phone. I haven’t set the LTE up yet, since I’ve been looking to change carriers. I think this to be one of the most useful features especially when going hiking or long walks as its battery I think would last longer than my cell phone. - Pros: Stylish, solid build, lots of features, great for outdoors, easy to customize. - Cons: none so far. >> Setup Although it came with some charge, I decided to fully charge the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro before setting it up. I installed the Galaxy Wear App on my phone, turned on the Galaxy watch, and on a first try, the phone couldn’t find the watch (or vice versa). I run the Wear App setup again and rescanned the device a second time, and voila, Galaxy Watch was configured without much fanfare. While setting it up, I chose the defaults and didn’t log into my Google account or created a Samsung account, I just wanted to have a basic out of the box experience. After connecting to the phone and placing the Galaxy Watch on my wrist, I was pleased that, besides being able to access the time and date, I had my email (Hotmail) account available and I was able to make/receive calls as well as text messaging from the get-go. The latter tied to the different apps that came by default which cover from weather/location to health, made my initial experience a very satisfying one. After a couple of days of use, I received the notification to update the device. Updating the Software/system was easy and fast. I kept the watch connected to the charger and the Wear OS update started and completed within a few minutes (around 5 min.) >> Apps The set of Apps that come by default, in my opinion, are basically all you’d need to get started. The default apps and their features seemed to have been well thought, so a big “plus” to Samsung for doing such a great job. Now, of course, you’d need a Samsung account to use some of the Apps and a Google account to access Google Play (I don’t plan on doing this yet.) To give an idea on the applications here are a few: - Calculator App: yes, it is minimalistic, besides a basic calculator, has a tip calculator and a unit converter options, which in my opinion are sufficient while on the go. You probably won’t need to compute integrals while walking outdoors, but some unit conversions come very handy, don’t they? - Email App: it is only text based, and well given the real state of the screen, it is hard to imagine reading some HTML text with video and images. This app serves my purpose in general though, as the emails I am more interested in usually come just as text. - Messenger: receiving a new text message notification and being able to read it right away without reaching my phone is one of the most useful features in this device. - Location: this shows where you are on the map and also a few landmarks you set, and if you’d need extra features, the watch will forward you to your phone. - Compass: very useful when going through a thick forest out here in the Pacific Northwest. >> Health I see this device not only as a health monitor but as a coach (without the human coaching nuisances.) I like the encouragement I receive when I am getting active, and I also like the remainder to become active if I’ve been sitting for a long period of time (everybody needs a coach to move, right?) I realized that I don’t mind the watch telling me to move, which sometimes contrasts when I have a real person telling me to do some exercise (which I hate.) Perhaps it is an antisocial behavior, but well, you cannot talk back to your phone. This watch has a wide range of apps and sensors to help you monitor and promote your health, and also realize some hidden facts about your health. For example, I didn’t know how low my heart rate would go while sleeping, which was very interesting to find, and would explain why I need to put extra sheets while sleeping. The Samsung Health and activity tracker gives you a good summary of how you are performing, details on you heart rate, oxygen level etc. If interested in more details about your heart, the ECG app is there for you (you’d need to install the Samsung Health Monitor app on your phone.) In summary, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is your healthy companion. >> Battery Under regular use, in my case it is checking email from time to time, texting, checking heart rate, verifying the weather, and under the default configuration such as screen not always on and others, the Samsung Watch 5 Pro battery lasts for about 4 days. It warns you when the battery is low and suggests changing the device to “Watch only” mode. If it is only in Watch mode, the battery lasts way more, I haven’t tried but setting it to Watch only mode would allow the device to last for several days. When the battery is completed depleted, charging from 0% to 100% takes about one and half (1 1/2) hours. I wish the watch would turn on automatically after reaching 100%, since I think you’d be tempted to wear it thinking it is ready without realizing it is off (or realizing it is after it doesn’t respond). Well, if you prefer not wearing your watch at night while sleeping, then that’d be a good time to charge it.

Perfect watch for active people

Whilst unboxing the watch, I immediately loved the clean, polished and simple yet elegant look of the watch. On my relatively average sized wrist the 44mm watch face looks rather large, however, I am a fan of the real watch look it gives. The watch was relatively easy to set up to my phone, which isn't a Samsung. I had to download a Galaxy watch plugin as well as the Galaxy Wearable app, to ensure compatibility with my phone. After that the watch went through all the options to set it up. I only came across one problem when setting up and personalising my watch, this was with Samsung Pay not the watch itself. Samsung Pay doesn’t except some Bank cards (like Metro bank) so I thought I wasn’t going to be able pay from my watch. However, after some playing about I realised you could download app directly onto the watch, therefore I downloaded Google pay and set up my payment. Also, unfortunately due to not having a Samsung phone, I am unable to download the Samsung Health Monitor which means I cannot use the Blood pressure and ECG feature on the watch. The watch was perfect to take to the gym, as it has a plethora of work-out options to fit with the form of exercise that you choose. The watch tracked the precise measurements of treadmill including the speed and the calories expended. Whilst using the weights the watch track my heart rate to convert into calories expenditure. The watch also has a sleep tracker function, which tracks the length of sleep and splits the sleep into stages: Awake, REM, Light and Deep. It also records any snoring/ noise and tracks blood oxygen during sleep. These are quite interesting to explore and find out how to improve sleep. Through-out the day, I only charge the watch for 30/45mins maximum and the battery will last through the night and next day. If I am not too active with recording/tracking exercise the watch will only lose 30% charge over 24 hours and when active it will lose 50%. The fast charging and long battery life are so impressive and extremely helpful for someone who is always on the move.

This Watch is absolutely brilliant on the health aspect as well as being able to handle all the basics like calls and messages. The battery life seems to be really good so far and lasts me the whole day which is fantastic. Now for the reason I have deducted a star. Unfortunately the watch is not compatible for those who have tattoos in the area that you'll be wearing the watch and unless you search for this info online, Samsung are not very upfront about this issue which is disappointing. It still works as a normal watch but it can cause issues with notifications etc and will not perform the functions like blood pressure, heart rate monitoring and other diagnostic functions. When placed against an area of skin that has no tattoos, these functions all work fine but once it is placed on tattooed skin, they do not work. As tattoos are getting more and more popular and more people have them these days, this information should be provided upfront or hopefully in the future, Samsung can work on a fix for this issue.

Small and Mighty

I have been wearing the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 for over a week now and I am really impressed by it. The display is brilliant, crystal clear and vibrant colours. The overall size of the Galaxy Watch5 is also great for a smaller wrist such as my own, it feels less intrusive than some of the other smart watches I've worn. The weight if the Galaxy Watch5 is also another plus point, it doesn't feel like you are wearing it most of the time, it's very comfortable to wear, especially at night when using to track your sleep. The look of the Galaxy Watch5 is also really smart, clean lines and minimalistic button help with the tidy overall feel. The look of the Galaxy Watch5 is also really smart, clean lines and minimalistic button help with the tidy overall feel. In comparison to other Samsung smart watches the missing bevel on the Galaxy Watch5 makes it a little less fluid to navigate through the menus, but the ability to sroll round the screen to speed through the navigation is a great way to counter the lack of bevel. The app catalogue from the Google Play Store seems to be getting a lot bigger with more compatible apps now available since earlier models of smart watches so this is a plus too. This makes it easy to check some of your regular phone apps on the go from the Galaxy Watch5, and the addition of Google Wallet is a huge plus for Android users, who may not own a Samsung phone, or those who chose not to use Samsung Pay. The app makes it perfect to paying for things with a simple flick of your wrist. I haven't explored them too much as of yet but there are a number of accessibility features that can be enabled in the settiny menu which is a great addition too, with the Talkback function and high contrast themes to help those who need this assistance to also use the Galaxy Watch5. All in all its an amazing little device for those looking for a smart watch to use day to day as an addition to your phone. The only little niggle is the battery life, its small. You are lucky ig you get a day and half use out of it, and that would be really limiting the use of it to achieve this length of time, so you will be charging it every day.

Worthy Upgrade in Every Single Way!
23 January 2023

My old Samsung Galaxy Wearable was the Galaxy Watch 3, which I was a big fan of but I wanted to upgrade and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro was something that greatly appealed to me with it's improvements in both the hardware and software departments. The first striking thing about this Smart Watch is it's aesthetic design. The Titanium build is instantly noticeable and compared to the Aluminium chassis of my previous model, I really can notice a difference. In addition to the solid Titanium body, having a sapphire screen adds even more safety in regards to durability of this wearable. Another big upgrade from the Gorilla Glass on my previous model. I have to say how impressed I am with the included D Buckle strap. The magnet works fantastically well, very easy to adjust, and never comes undone, even during vigorous hiit workouts or playing sports. The quality of the strap is great and both looks smart while being extremely comfortable for activity, and the colour really matches the Grey Titanium body of the watch. The new Google Wear Operating System is something I was eager to try, having always been used to Samsung's own Tizen OS which had been ever present on my previous wearables. But I am delighted with the software on this watch. Having access to Google Pay, You Tube music and Google Maps has taken the functionality of this watch, for me, to a whole different level, to what was previously possible for me with previous Samsung devices. The user interface is much more friendly, as well as looking a lot better on the eye. The widgets are great and the pre-installed selection of watch faces and integrated personalisation of those is fantastic. With the ability to download hundreds more, there really is something for whatever I fancy and mood I am in. The improved health tracking was a big selling point for me. Body Composition to easily keep tabs on my body fat and mass is great and allows a much more regular and up to date progress report of how I'm getting on. The sleep tracking improvements are also noticeable and the battery life has impressed me aswell. Easily getting 2 full days and nights before needing a charge. But even when charging has been required, it reaches 100% in no time at all. All in all, absolutely thrilled I have upgraded and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about getting one.
