A wonderful, fun phone

This really is a delightful phone to use, in most areas.Overall, a highly enjoyable phone, both fun and very convenient.**UPDATE - UPGRADE TO FLIP 5**Having made the upgrade to the Flip 5, I was instantly impressed with the array of colour offerings. I sent back my rose gold / pink Flip 4 and changed for a beautiful green Flip 5. The new cover screens increase in size is incredibly beautiful to look at. With some tinkering it has a whole heap of functionality, including the full use of some apps. One noticeable difference away from the cover screen on the Flip 5 is that when shut the two sides of the phone sit flush whereas the Flip 4 sat with a noticeable gap. This helps to stop any pocket lint or dust from getting between the screens when folded.Software-wise, I was a huge fan of the photography software onboard the Flip 4, with it taking some of the very best portrait shots I've ever seen on a mobile phone, in fact far more impressive than some other manufacturer flagship phones. This is true of the Flip 5 too - which although not seeing any upgrades in the camera hardware has seen a slight overhaul in the software department. I took the Flip 5 on a family holiday along with a flagship and used the Flip 5 far more and got far better end results with it. I now have to say that whilst the Flip 5 doesnt pack the best hardware stats on the market, the internals and how it performs has pushed the phone to becoming my first choice mobile phone.

To Samsung's credit the gap between the screens has disappeared when closed, this is more impactful than people give it credit, however still there is no IP dust resistance which incredibly frustrating, a case is a must to limit dust egress. The external screen is a big step up, I never used it on the 4 as I found it too small and awkward and pointless. The Z Flip 5 external screen is clear and very useful to read and reply quickly to messages, however the pixel density is disappointing, I can see the pixels which is not what I have come to expect on a premium phone.Out of the box the use of the external screen is limited, you need to download additional Samsung tools to make it more functional, most users won't bother and this feels like a missed opportunity by Samsung to bring customisation to the masses.I used the 5 for selfies, the viewfinder use is a good idea as you can use the better external camera over the limited internal camera, I have yet to see if this can be used on video calls with colleagues.Build quality is great, I prefer the matt finish on the 5 to the metal parts, it brings a more polished feel over the shiny steel from the 4.OneUI has had no big changes between the 4 and 5, it is clean and simple, I do wish it was a little clearer at times and aligned more closely to standard Android out of the box.The transfer tool to move to the Z Flip 5, all my settings came across with a minimum of fuss, this was a real bonus and something that I have come to expect when changing devices.Lets move on to the biggest features of the phone that is largely overlooked, the new hinge is great, closing the phone completely flush with no gaps is great and the hinge design is clever, it feels smoother to use compared to the 4. But it's almost like a trick has been missed, there has been no reduction in the impact of the crease on the screen, it's still very noticeable in certain conditions and can be felt when scrolling. The Z Flip 5 is definitely evolution of an existing platform rather than revolution.

Flip 5 flexes to thrive
4 September 2023

When the Samsung Z Flip 5 was announced I thought this is the time to take the plunge. After my first few days I must say I'm not disappointed by it.The zero gap hinge is great and I got for the Starter pack that includes a great clear case and fast charger, as well as the official cover screen protector, both which I highly recommend.I wasn't sure if the crease would be an issue for me, or how I would use the cover screen exactly, but I was intrigued to find out.Unfolded it is just like any other top tier slab phone, and while I do notice the dip in the middle, I've gotten used to it being there and I don't notice it when watching something full screen which is great. When folded either slightly or all the way, however, that things get quite interesting. The Flex feature for some apps turn the bottom half into a touchpad, which can do two finger scrolling, and a mouse pointer appears in the top half. This made it easier to use the phone when lying down in bed for instance. You can activate this for other apps not optimised for it if you wish too. When fully folded, a few widgets can be accessed via the cover screen, and taking selfies, checking the weather, messages and replying were very convenient in this mode with my medium sized hands and fingers. I loved the customisation you can do for the cover lock screen.Once I installed a third party app from the Samsung App store and enabled a cover screen feature, also recommended in various online reviews, I could use a lot more apps for music, contactless payments, ordering taxis, among other messaging, fitness and media apps. I definitely recommend doing that. With my medium use of the phone, the battery gets me through the whole day and then some, and the fast charger gets from 5% to 100% after 1hr 20min which was very quick. Fast charging does heat up the phone a bit and for better battery longevity I'd rather charge it up with a slower charger routinely. The battery settings interestingly had a setting to only charge to 85% for battery longevity which I need to read into more as I thought not charging to 100% would be worse for battery memory.Anyway, overall I love this phone and would fully recommend it if you can stomach the price or get a good deal on it then go for it. You'll enjoy using your phone in new ways and being able to fit it into smaller pockets is so much more convenient (despite making it a bit thicker this is definitely a great form factor!).

Flip phones are flimsy

This is a long review, but I would urge everyone who is considering buying the Flip 5 or the new Flip 6 to read this entire review and make your own judgement. I am not one to write reviews about products, but I felt I needed to for this particular product. I am a loyal Samsung customer who's had Samsung phones as far back as the S6. I was so excited when the flip series came out and pre-ordered the Flip 3 when it first came out and the Flip 5 with the full screen when THAT came out. About a year into owning the Flip 3, the middle of the inside screen (right at the fold) started to show small signs of cracks so I brought it in for a warranty repair and fortunately Samsung agreed to repair that phone at a cost of $168. When the Flip 5 came out I traded my Flip 3 for the Flip 5. The Flip 5 was very cool and screen is very attractive, but I honestly can say that I barely use that large exterior screen. The problem with that screen is that it is fragile and even with a screen protector on it cracked on the edge when i accidently hit it against the corner of a table when the phone was in my pocket. This is obviously not a warranty repair. HOWEVER, the inside screen (which has no cracks) is now malfunctioning after a few weeks. After going through a series of tests with a Samsung agent (who was very helpful) they determined that the interior screen needed replacing so sent me to a service centre in Calgary and said that the agent would go over the warranty coverage with me. When I went to the service centre the next they, they immediately told me that this would NOT be approved as a warranty repair as the outside screen and inside screen are linked and that physical damage to the outside screen voids the warranty to the inside screen so I would have to pay for replacing BOTH screens at a cost of approximately $1,000. Given that this is close to the cost of a new phone, it is not worth fixing and is now essentially a very expensive paperweight. After being a big fan of the flip phones, I will no longer buy one. I actually feel that I prefer the smaller screen on the flip 3's and 4's at those are less susceptible to damage. Please see my photos to see my very expensive paperweight. Very disappointed with Samsung for not covering the interior screen under warranty (the exterior screen still works fine).

Functional design with good aesthetics

I have thought a lot about getting this Galaxy Flip5 phone as am always intrigued and sceptical about the foldable phones. Once I opened the case and held it in my hands, I felt really positive about the whole phone.First of all it is a solid phone and feels quite full in the hands. The metallic case feels quite sturdy. The flipping of the phone is effortless and doesn't make any noise and looks quite clean and neat. The screen doesn't show much signs off folding and the display is clearcut. It goes into my pocket really well.It has a massive 256GB in it's base version which is more than enough for all my personal and work apps and hopefully not have to worry about storing pics in another app.The screen is very clear and the display colours are fantastic as ... MoreI have thought a lot about getting this Galaxy Flip5 phone as am always intrigued and sceptical about the foldable phones. It goes into my pocket really well.It has a massive 256GB in it's base version which is more than enough for all my personal and work apps and hopefully not have to worry about storing pics in another app.The screen is very clear and the display colours are fantastic as always with other Galaxy phones. I particularly liked the display of the mini outer screen and the functionality of it.I think I will be using the outer screen mostly during my busy time as we can choose which apps to go there and get a reasonable functionality from them. I started using maps on it and it works effortlessly. The main screen looks a bit elongated when switched off but not much when things are in display. One important thing I liked from Samsung is it comes installed with a screen protector.. what a nice thought from Samsung.. hats off...The phone also seems to have one of the best processor out there and have excellent multifunctionality with not heating up. I could download a big app while simultaneously playing a high quality video on what's app with not much effort. The battery although is small compared to some of the recent china manufactured phones but it lasted a whole 36 hrs with moderate use and a full day with heavy use taking videos and making at least 4 hrs of video conferencing calls. The software seems quite intuitive with good interface and I could transfer all my data from iOS very easily at the time of setup. The apps open and close effortlessly .The camera slot doesn't take up half of the back like recent phones and looks aesthetically very neat. It has 2 circles for cameras and the best thing I felt is it's easy to take pics with the smaller screen and it looks very clear. The pics are of good quality. There is also an optical zoom which works well.To summarise,I felt very happy to get this excellent phone and am looking forward to use its functionality more.. It also comes with a good 3 year warranty So,I dont need to worry about a new phone soon..!

Huge Improvement

Now this is what the flip should have been from the beginning.Outside screen is a joy to use now, especially if you install Samsung's goodlock app.Add to that the improved battery life and cameras and you have a flip phone that's finally what I would call ready for the massesThe build quality feels premium while also being surprisingly lightWhen unfolded the inner screen is absolutely stunning, yes there's a crease but you really stop noticing it after a day or so.I have to say I've used flex mode a lot more than I thought I would. I just flip it 90 degrees when I'm at my desk and just have a video running while I'm working on something.Stick it on a restaurant table and take a family photo with the rear camera (much higher quality), while still being able ... MoreNow this is what the flip should have been from the beginning.Outside screen is a joy to use now, especially if you install Samsung's goodlock app.Add to that the improved battery life and cameras and you have a flip phone that's finally what I would call ready for the massesThe build quality feels premium while also being surprisingly lightWhen unfolded the inner screen is absolutely stunning, yes there's a crease but you really stop noticing it after a day or so.I have to say I've used flex mode a lot more than I thought I would. Love the Flip5, BUT Unstable Quality Control
24 May 2024

This was the first time I came into contact with a flip phone. Never had one before thus I was quite excited to try it out hoping it would be good enough to keep albeit the already bad reviews. First off, I love the concept very much and I actually had fun with it for the one week I was using it. It was nice, compact, when I go on walks, it was light enough I can hook it to my lanyard to put it around my neck/hand or I can tuck it in my pants pocket, and it will never fall out even when I run. I enjoy the outer screens as well with the convenience of checking weathers, calendar, timer, playing music, etc. although I had to download 3rd party app GoodLock to unlock more ways to use the small screen. I enjoy the outer screens as well with the convenience of checking weathers, calendar, timer, playing music, etc. although I had to download 3rd party app GoodLock to unlock more ways to use the small screen. Mini games and other apps were able to be access on the front outer screen thru GoodLock. The crease on the inner screen isn't noticeable when you stare straight at the screen but you will see it at other angles. As I use the phone, I forget that its there or sometimes I run my finger over it feeling amaze at the tech itself, thus it was not a big deal to me.Drawbacks are that if you want to play the other real games or grant permissions/verifications to certain websites/apps/programs, it requires you flip to the inner big screen just to hit yes. Also, when you answer a call in cover screen, it will only allow you to be in speaker mode. I think it would be nice if they give you an option to set where even when you watch a video/using apps/calls and close the inner screen, the video/apps/calls will continue to play/move to the cover screen. Though overall, its a fairly creative phone. Now the real dealbreaker for me is the quality of this phone. I made two purchases for the Flip5 phones to get the promotional discounts and both phones has small defects on them. The first phone, (just to clarify, I never drop nor mishandle the phone as I only either go on walks or stay indoors majority of time), after one week of used, the black trim that surround the inner screen easily pop out on one side as I flip it open. The second phone that I received has a loose hinge issue. While the first phone did not have any problem with the hinge, so I compare both phones. The second phone cannot stay open or hold in place at specific angles or flex modes but the first phone can because of the tighter hinge. Both phones have small defects coming out of the box, so it makes me question the quality of these phones for long term usage and I rather not waste more time going through repair processes later. Even with the discounts along with my trade-in, I rather spend $800-$900 on a more solid phone. I really want to love this phone because of all of its convenience features, but its very important that a phone has reliability and durability, thus I returned both Flip5 Phones. I will not recommend this phones to others. If you want to get this phone, do so at your own risk. Who knows, you may be one of the lucky few with damage-free flip5.I have no doubt Samsung will improve the Z Flip in the future, but for now, I think its still too soon for me to own a Flip phone with this quality.

Review of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 512GB Graphite
31 August 2023

This is without a doubt the most fun phone that I have ever owned, I'm 45 years young now so I thought that the days of getting excited over a phone were long behind me but no, this thing is absolutely amazing. To be truthful I wasn't really after an upgrade, I had a year left on my Z Flip 3 contract but Samsung offered a crazy trade in deal which meant that I could pay off the remainder of my contract and still have enough money left over for a cheeky Nandos and I am so glad that I did.So the phone is a premium looking device which you can see from the moment you open the box, it is a metal and glass body with a huge inner screen which appears to be an improvement in every way on the previous models. The large inner screen still has a protector pre installed on ... MoreThis is without a doubt the most fun phone that I have ever owned, I'm 45 years young now so I thought that the days of getting excited over a phone were long behind me but no, this thing is absolutely amazing. The large inner screen still has a protector pre installed on it but somehow this feels more like glass and is a noticeable upgrade on the Z Flip 3. Because of this upgrade viewing angles and annoying reflections are much improved and the crease in the fold appears less noticeable, it can still be felt with a finger but when watching Netflix or playing games it seems almost invisible. The screen itself is stunning, colours pop and blacks are perfectly black too.The cameras are great, recently I got married and the photos taken with this phone turned out brilliant, I am by no means a professional photographer but 90% of the pics that I took turned out amazing with vibrant colours.Speakers in this phone are brilliant... YouTube Music is my streaming app of choice and this sounds amazing with a deep bass and clear mids, I have zero complaints and I mean zero... Whether the phone is open or closed the sounds are clear and crisp. The processor / operating system is great, I have never had any lag no matter what I'm doing. Everything feels snappy and screens are immediately responsive. Now the important part I guess, the main selling point...The front screen! I wasn't sure how I would use this or even need it but damn, it's an ace addition to an already great phone. Out of the box it can be used for watching YouTube, answering calls, making texts and a few other things that make life kinda fun but with a few tweaks which are actually available to install from the Samsung Store for free you can access every single app on your phone which opens up a new world of convenience. I find myself rarely opening the phone fully anymore unless I'm playing a game or watching The X-Files in bed.The fun part is the amount of personalisation you can add to the front screen, it comes with several generic wallpapers to use but you can literally download any MP4 format video online and use it as a live wallpaper, it's awesome. I've downloaded loads and depending on my mood I either have Mario and Sonic bouncing across my screen or have Kurt Russell questioning his life choices in The Thing.Would I recommend this phone? Yes I would! 100%Is it my favourite phone ever? Yes... And that's saying something since my previous favourite phone was the Motorola Razer from 2005ish. Since then phones have just been phones, I have found them quite boring but this device is in my opinion the start of something really really cool.

[Rewarded Review] Great phone
7 November 2023

Pros: The Flip 5 has great battery life (better than the Flip 4 or the Galaxy S22)! The external screen is very useful for checking texts, the weather, calendar, etc, without opening the phone. (MAJOR upgrade from the Flip 4.) Get a phone case with a screen protector for the external screen, though...probably a good idea to keep this phone in a seperate pocket than your keys or change! The phone easily fits into just about any pocket and the indentation where the screen folds is noticeably shallower than the previous model. The usb-c port was also upgraded on this year's model and can be used (with an adapter) to output upto 4K video to a monitor/tv. The 5G, Wifi6e, apps and processing are all seem just as quick and reliable as other high-end smart phones. Cons: the cameras are basically the same as the Flip4 and are pretty mediocre. Low light/night photos from the main cameras and especially, the selfie camera, are pretty dim. (The cameras on my old Galaxy S10 took better pictures, especially at night.) The hinge where the phone bends was supposedly upgraded from the Flip4, but it doesn't seem to hold the phone open as strongly as the pervious model...it require less force to open/close, though that may have been intended as a feature? (I find myself accidently partially closing my screen if I move the phone too quickly in certain directions.) The external screen doesn't support full apps, only widget versions of some apps. There seems to be a bit of lag when taking some photos, but not others, not terrible, but noticeable compared to the Flip4 or Galaxy S22. When trying to access photos saved in the "Gallery" from Facebook or Chrome browser, there's a strange 1~3 second lag before your camera roll will display, which is irritating...that DIDN'T happen on the Flip4. Remains to be seen: The Flip3s and Flip4s had an issue with the factory-installed screen protector eventually bubbling-up and seperating from the screen at the bend after about 1 year of use...hopefully Samsung has corrected that issue. Overall, a great phone, but due to its few short-comings, best to buy this phone when it's on sale.
