If one cannot afford nor wants to play in the new & growing world of NVMe SSD's, this is top of the line. Only one or two other brands offers a 10 year warranty on the same drive, or 150 TBW written. Except for demanding drive tasks, where the RAPID app can help with, really who is going to write 150TB of data to this drive inside of 10 years? BTW, this SSD can be used for datacenter or server use, so it really has to have thick skin. If one can grab one of these for anything under $225, go for it, I was lucky with a promo & got it for just under $200. checked less than an hour later, was sold out. At the same time, some may decide to wait & see if there'll be a 860 Pro, while that's true with the 9 series, haven't heard anyone say anything about the 850 series going anywhere (except for the M.2 model of the EVO line). This model should still be still be in distribution come this time next year, as SATA-3 has hit it's peak. Prior to install, or right afterwards, download the latest Samsung Magician from their website, the one on the CD may be older & therefore, no reason to install, only to be rewritten over again. Then open & select a power plan. Note that the Maximum Performance is not the best one, unless one hibernates (not recommended for SSD users). I chose the 'Maximum Capacity' option, and this baby screams, yet at the same time, hums right along. Never once have had any SSD related issues with this one, not the first. This SSD was an early birthday present to myself in November 2015.;-)

The OCZ drives just died, so I could restore from backup and carry on. With Samsung, it caused corruption in 2106 files and still reported "GOOD" in their own utility that checks health (this may have gone on for long time, I just happened to be upgrading to m.2 sata and couldn't clone my data off the 850 Pro without the Acronis and Paragon crashing). I can't put my data's trust in Samsung anymore. Even when their own tools report failure, they continue to display GOOD health. Samsung needs a collective head shake. My takeaway is that this 10 year warranty will end up being useless as the drive won't be stocked in a few years. I'll no longer give 5/10 year warranties from Samsung a benefit over competing 3/5 year warranties. I think they are counting on the mass majority of people giving up and taking the lost drive when it eventually fails. I certainly didn't expect a failure within 8 months on a 10 year warranty drive.

The drive seems to run fine without any hiccups or compatability issues. I'm incredibly happy with its performance on a SATA2 level, everything is nearly instantaneous and this drive has no problems saturating the SATA2 interface's bandwith, milking every last ounce of performance out of it, which is something no regular HDD can do. I can only imagine how much faster things would be on a current SATA3 system. My only irritation is that the Samsung Magician software disables Sleep mode on the PC, and sets everything to Maximum Performance in the power management controls, including changing the CPU settings so that it doesn't throttle down to slower speeds when idle (it sets it so the CPU runs at 100% all the time), which kind of negates any power savings the drive itself might have had over a standard HDD. Still, this can be changed back to balanced or custom settings by the pc user, after removing the Magician software, but it is still a hassle, and an unexpected one.

Other games such as Planetside 2, Mad Max, Homeworld etc have also vastly improved loading times. And its not just load times that are improved. In some games such as GTA San Andreas you can move into a new area faster than the hard drive can load things like building textures and pedestrians. The SSD solves this, no more do things just pop into existence beside you. Skyrim also has a bit of this problem too if you use a mod to give you a fast ride. Overall in the gaming department, this is really where the SSD shines to me.2. System and Software - Windows startup time is also another area that shines brightly with an SSD. Traditional hard drive takes 1 minute or more to boot, sometimes 45 seconds if you got a good drive and a fresh install of windows. With the 850 pro, my fully loaded Windows 10 Pro OS can boot up in 22 seconds. That's with no password and such. 22 seconds from power button to mouse moving on desktop. The system tray icons at the bottom right of the desktop used to take 2 or 3 minutes for all of them to load up after arriving to the desktop, now with the 850 pro they all pop up simultaneously and instantly. My web browser, Firefox, used to take about 2 or 3 seconds to load up after clicking, now before my ear can even register the second click of the mouse, the browser is fully loaded and ready to go. I have also noticed greatly increased performance in Microsoft office programs, especially excel and power point. Then came the real software test. WinRar. As a winrar test i packed up 10 GB of music to test speeds. It took less than a minute to package up (compress) the 10 GB using the Best compression method, where as on a traditional hard drive your looking at 30 to 45 minutes of waiting maybe even more since i used the best method. Unpackaging (decompression) was instantaneous at the click of the mouse. Every thing i do is like a flash of light.3. Music and Movies - Not much to say here other than transfer speeds are high, but i wouldn't keep music or movies on an SSD, they don't play better or sound better, but they do take up limited space and put wear and tear on the drive. Best to leave them on the traditional hard drive.4. Benchmark - I have included a screenshot of the benchmarking program i used to test this hard drive. As you can see all test results exceed the specifications of this hard drive. I could to many different tests using many different settings but i stuck with the default and most used one.Construction - The SSD's construction is very nice. It is very strong and solid, but also very light almost like paper. It is very smooth and slim and should fit nearly anywhere you want to put it. Also the sata and power connectors are stiff and strong.Software - The samsung magician software that is paired with the hard drive is also very nice. It shows the health and total data written to the hard drive, can change windows options to better suit the SSD and its needs, encryption, the works. The only thing is that Rapid Mode does not work for windows 10 yet but Samsung says they are working hard on it, it has something to do with the new way windows 10 manages memory. Conclusion - Overall, this is the greatest hard drive Ive ever seen. Its super fast, super strong, has great software, and is backed up by a monster 10 year warranty. I looked forward to many years of extreme gaming with this SSD. I would highly haft to recommend this SSD to everyone. It is a truly great product made by a great company from a great nation. You wont be disappointed with this SSD.

Rapid Mode allows higher transfer rates that come closer in numbers to PCIe SSD Devices. So basically, yeah - the drive will be faster than other SSDs when it's enabled. The pro 850 model has a 10 year warranty as opposed to the 5 year for the 850 EVO. Both are great drives, either way.Samsung states the durability is such that you could write -at least- 150 Terabytes of data to this drive before it runs out of P/E cycles (short for program/erase cycle - the procedure of data being written, erased and re-written to the drive) and creates issues. That is amazing! Samsung Magician does not list Windows 10 in its system requirements so even if it does work, it is most likely not supported yet. This issue is something I've read about, I have not seen it first hand.To be on the safe side, I uninstalled Samsung Magician before upgrading Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 in case there was an issue. I'm sure Samsung will have an update soon, so this will not pose as a real problem. You can still use the drive without it being enabled and it has great transfer speeds either way.

SUPER SOLID SSD EVER....What you want to know is this: is this SSD faster than the 850 EVO? When dealing with SSD's, does any appreciable difference in speed occur, since they are all so fast, anyway? The fact is this: I've been using Samsung SSD's of varying varieties for years, and when I recently replaced my Samsung 850EVO with this one (on my boot drive), the speed notice WAS undeniably different. Yes, I still has those couple of seconds of booting time after the POST routine finished, but instead of programs loading, they almost felt like they were POPPING, this thing is so fast.Is it worth the price? Hard to say. First, is what type of computer user are you? What types of programs do you typically run? And what type of system do you have? For example, if the bottleneck is in another part of the system, you may not get the most bang for your buck by spending the extra on this PRO version. But if you have a modern, well-specified computer, you will notice a speed difference. I certainly did. And now comes the wait until the 850 PRO prices come down, because what you really want is something like this, but in 4Tb or larger. It will be a few years before we see such storage, and at reasonable prices, but this drive clearly shows it is coming. For now, if you are dealing with a desktop, consider my strategy of using it as the boot disk with all your programs installed, and other, less expensive drives for storage. If this is for a laptop, you have to ask yourself if your laptop is new enough and powerful enough (RAM, processor, video system, etc.) to warrant the extra expense. All SSD drives are fast, and generally, scream past the traditional spin platter drives we all grew up with. But there IS a difference in how the memory in an SSD is constructed and then, of course, there is the often-overlooked factor of the controller attached to the disk, which also has an impact on speed.Of all the Samsung drives I've purchased, this is the best, and fastest. Its a superb drive that is a window into the future of SSD drives.

Speedy Silent Drive

I bought this drive to upgrade my full and sluggish 1TB standard Windows 7 drive. I wasn't disappointed. I just found a space in the case, plugged it in, dropped my Windows 10 disk in the DVD drive and let the machine do it's thing. In just a few minutes this was up and running with no hassle. On my old drive it took 2'30" (according to Glarisoft Utilities Pro) to boot and even after that it took longer for everything to settle down and the drive still chattered away in the background even after running various utility programs. Now it takes just 15 seconds to boot into a fully stable working environment. That's faster than 98% of all Windows users! Yes it's only 256gb but I only intend to run Windows on the disk so it's ample for the job. It would also make a great mobile storage drive for music / photos etc. This has transformed my computer. I can now begin editing my photos after a shoot in seconds rather than the embarrassing 10-15 minutes it used to take to stabilise. Definately recommenfed

[Rewarded Review] A great drive for the technology of tomorrow
30 September 2016

I purchased an Asus 2-in-1 Q552U laptop a little over 6 months ago and swapped its internal 1TB mechanical drive for a new Samsung 850 Pro 512GB Solid State Drive and love it. I wanted the higher stability for a portable device, the better performance for a longer period, and the greater speed for my work that solid state drives promise. And that computer with that SSD is fast. It takes all of 7 seconds for start-up bios, with the speed feeling almost the same as turning on a light switch. Doing an “intelligent sector” clone of C using Macrium free version takes 8 minutes, and doing an exact copy (copying empty space as well as data space) takes 1 hour and 20 minutes—and that is through a USB port to an external spin drive (The 1TB that came out of the computer was ... MoreI purchased an Asus 2-in-1 Q552U laptop a little over 6 months ago and swapped its internal 1TB mechanical drive for a new Samsung 850 Pro 512GB Solid State Drive and love it. Webroot Secure Anywhere Antivirus and Security already has a light footprint. With the SSD, the entire computer is scanned in 35 seconds. The Pro version has a 10-year warranty and the faster speeds. If buying an SSD in conjunction with the purchase of a new computer for upgrading the computer’s drive, it might also be worth considering the Geek Squad Protect and Support plans. While I typically do not buy service and warranty plans, it is an excellent investment if swapping the drive. The drive change is covered under the Plan, the manufacturer’s warranty is going to be void upon changing the drive, the Geek Squad Plan can substitute for that warranty, and there is a certain amount of set-up required for a change-out from the HD to the SSD. I bought the plan which covered the install, and I am very glad that I did.Note that some settings and maintenance schedules may need changing for the SSD. A couple of great articles helpful to me were “SSD Optimization Tips for Windows 10 You May Want to Know” (at disk-partition dot com), “12 Things You Must Do When Running a Solid State Drive in Windows 7” by Miguel Leiva-Gomez (at maketecheasier dot com), and Scott Hanselman’s article at hanselman dot com titled, “The Real and Complete Story – Does Windows Defragment your SSD?” I made sure to enable TRIM, and it may be helpful to discuss the points important to you with those doing the swap before swapping. This is a great drive and will put your machine in steed for the technology of tomorrow.

[Rewarded Review] Drive Transfer Software Works Like a Champ
26 December 2016

Purchased the drive. Took it home and was concerned that Windows would boot up properly along with other applications functioning properly after swapping this drive in for the older smaller SSD. Rest assured that as long as you have the ports/cables required within your PC, the process works smoothly. My PC build has two drives, one SSD and one a classic HD. I followed all safe practices, unplugged the classic HD (Note: the Operating System is loaded on the SSD, not this drive) and plugged the new SSD in it's place. Then I ran the included software on the CD which was a simple process. It automatically recognized the old and new drive and provided the opportunity for me to verify everything was correct before it started. Everything booted right up into Windows and all of my applications are functioning correctly. I've successfully more than doubled the space available on my operating system boot drive without incurring the pain of performing a complete reinstall of Windows, my applications and data. Thank You Samsung and Best Buy!

[Rewarded Review] Great Product just a couple of things to be aware
23 January 2016

This is a great SSD. I decided on it because of the 10 year warranty. The things I ran into are one this drive is thinner than the HD in my laptop. It's not much thinner but just enough that it was possible to push it all the way into the HD slot without engaging the connectors. At first I thought it wasn't compatible with my old laptop as the BIOS reported no hard drive. A little searching online found the fix pull the drive back out and adjust it's angle a little bit and make sure you could feel the connectors seat as you pushed the disk back in. The second thing was using the Samsung Magician software I found I had some reliability issues running optimized for speed on my nine year old Dell Latitude D820. The second thing was using the Samsung Magician software I found I had some reliability issues running optimized for speed on my nine year old Dell Latitude D820. Using the setup for maximum reliability the disk has been rock solid. I first cloned my Windows 7 HD to the new disk then did an upgrade to Windows 10. While the Samsung Magician software reported it was the latest version a newer version was available at their web site that fully supports Windows 10. Even with my old laptop that can't fully utilize all the performance features of this SSD it makes booting/shutting down and opening apps very fast. I have an i7 desktop with 12GB of RAM I use for things I need processor performance like photo editing but for general web browsing and simple word processing/spreadsheet work it's nice to keep the old laptop running sitting in an easy chair in the living room. If I end up replacing the laptop any time in the near future I can put my old HD back into the laptop and use this SSD to swap out a less expensive drive option in the new laptop.
