Wow. If you want to improve your performance on your desktop or laptop by at least 1000%, buy one. Watch a video or two online to learn how to get and replace the operating system and things. Now watch your PC run from fully shutdown and shutdown mode, then press the power button and within 2 to 5 seconds of starting the entire computer to the OS desktop and ready for anything, and there are no loading times. Downloading games is ridiculously fast. Everything mind blowing. Each computer needs an SSD. You do not have to get SSD is great. Buy 128 GB or 256 GB and keep your old hard drive and use SSD to shut down the OS and save your files to the regular hard drive. I hope you will take it without limits

I started to consider buying a new MBP for many reasons (retina, lightweight, battery, USB3.0, etc), however I couldn't bring myself to buy one due to other expenses - so in the mean time I decided to upgrade my MBP as a cost effective method. I bought my MBP 13in within the first week of release back in early 2011. It was the baseline stock version, however I upgraded to 8GB memory not long after my purchase - so I have been running 8GB of memory for the past 4yrs. Along with upgrading my MBP with Samsung 850 PRO 256GB SSD, I also upgraded it to 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM from my old 8GB setup, brand Crucial (bought here). Installed Yosemite without any issues, and I INSTANTLY felt and saw the difference in speed. I reset my PRAM and SMC as well, due to installing the new hardware. Used Time Machine to restore my previous backup, no issues whatsoever. My Mac feels like a new breath of fresh air. Although I do wish I had a retina display, USB3.0 and the newer features of the current MBP, I'm EXTREMELY happy with my purchase because I could probably get another 2yrs out of this MBP before I buy the newer ones.

If one cannot afford nor wants to play in the new & growing world of NVMe SSD's, this is top of the line. Only one or two other brands offers a 10 year warranty on the same drive, or 150 TBW written. Except for demanding drive tasks, where the RAPID app can help with, really who is going to write 150TB of data to this drive inside of 10 years? BTW, this SSD can be used for datacenter or server use, so it really has to have thick skin. At the same time, some may decide to wait & see if there'll be a 860 Pro, while that's true with the 9 series, haven't heard anyone say anything about the 850 series going anywhere (except for the M.2 model of the EVO line). This model should still be still be in distribution come this time next year, as SATA-3 has hit it's peak. Prior to install, or right afterwards, download the latest Samsung Magician from their website, the one on the CD may be older & therefore, no reason to install, only to be rewritten over again. Then open & select a power plan. Note that the Maximum Performance is not the best one, unless one hibernates (not recommended for SSD users). I chose the 'Maximum Capacity' option, and this baby screams, yet at the same time, hums right along. Never once have had any SSD related issues with this one, not the first. This SSD was an early birthday present to myself in November 2015.;-)

Replaced a 2YO Crucial M4 128gb with this Samsung 850 Pro of the same size, largely to keep the system up to a peak performance level. Reads were relatively low on the M4 and I thought the upgrade might liven things up a bit. I didn't expect monumental performance gains and didn't get them, but that's not the fault of the SSD. I wouldn't recommend replacing an SSD, even if an old one like my M4, with a current one simply for a performance gain unless you have some specific need for it. Rapid 2.0 helps a bit, too, so with my current system I should be at near bleeding-edge at this time. If you want to upgrade from an older SSD I would suggest that you keep what you have. OTOH if you want to move from a HD I would highly recommending this SSD or a larger version, as the price is currently down to a very attractive level considering the performance realized. I first attempted to clone the drive with a 2YO version of Acronis TrueImage Home, which has worked on all drives it's come up against in the past two years including the M4, but this 850 Pro prompted repeated "Drive needs to be initialized" even though this had already be done. I used the Samsung Migration utility (current version downloaded from their website) instead and it worked fine. I later upgraded the Acronis software and it now recognizes the Samsung SSD. I clone my boot drive every week for backup, rotating seven SATA driives in mobile racks, so having this cloning feature is important to me.
- I would not recommend this to another person. - I would hesitate from buying another Samsung product. - I did not realize that the 10 year warranty is through point of purchase. This really erodes the point of a 10 year warranty, not that I think Newegg is going anywhere, but there are far less companies in same business for 10 years than are. They certainly won't be stocking this drive in 2 years from now, let alone 5+ years from now. - Registration was a pain, compared to Seagate or Western Digital. They definitely have poor web programmers operating their registration/account portal. Things like not allowing "samsung" in email address, to non-pasteable passwords, to greyed out address fields that can't be edited and already have correct address in profile... ... More- I would not recommend this to another person. - I would hesitate from buying another Samsung product. - I did not realize that the 10 year warranty is through point of purchase. Things like not allowing "samsung" in email address, to non-pasteable passwords, to greyed out address fields that can't be edited and already have correct address in profile... just frustrating on every page/form. - I've bought dozens and dozens of SSD drives right from beginning including many from OCZ. The OCZ drives just died, so I could restore from backup and carry on. With Samsung, it caused corruption in 2106 files and still reported "GOOD" in their own utility that checks health (this may have gone on for long time, I just happened to be upgrading to m.2 sata and couldn't clone my data off the 850 Pro without the Acronis and Paragon crashing). I can't put my data's trust in Samsung anymore. Even when their own tools report failure, they continue to display GOOD health. Samsung needs a collective head shake. My takeaway is that this 10 year warranty will end up being useless as the drive won't be stocked in a few years. I'll no longer give 5/10 year warranties from Samsung a benefit over competing 3/5 year warranties. I think they are counting on the mass majority of people giving up and taking the lost drive when it eventually fails. I certainly didn't expect a failure within 8 months on a 10 year warranty drive.
Ordered and arrived within about 5 days, in good package.Very easy to install and worked right away. Noticeable difference compared to old HDD. Well worth the price for performance difference.
1. Games - When it comes to gaming, having an SSD dramatically decreased load times for most newer games. Old games are not really affected due to how little data most of them need to load from the hard drive in today's standards. The biggest improvement came with Star Citizen. SC is still in super alpha, so nothing is optimized and load times are outrageous. Were outrageous. It used to take me nearly 2 minutes to load into hangar, now with the 850 pro, its less than 30 seconds. In some games such as GTA San Andreas you can move into a new area faster than the hard drive can load things like building textures and pedestrians. The SSD solves this, no more do things just pop into existence beside you. Skyrim also has a bit of this problem too if you use a mod to give you a fast ride. Overall in the gaming department, this is really where the SSD shines to me.2. System and Software - Windows startup time is also another area that shines brightly with an SSD. Traditional hard drive takes 1 minute or more to boot, sometimes 45 seconds if you got a good drive and a fresh install of windows. With the 850 pro, my fully loaded Windows 10 Pro OS can boot up in 22 seconds. That's with no password and such. 22 seconds from power button to mouse moving on desktop. The system tray icons at the bottom right of the desktop used to take 2 or 3 minutes for all of them to load up after arriving to the desktop, now with the 850 pro they all pop up simultaneously and instantly. My web browser, Firefox, used to take about 2 or 3 seconds to load up after clicking, now before my ear can even register the second click of the mouse, the browser is fully loaded and ready to go. I have also noticed greatly increased performance in Microsoft office programs, especially excel and power point. Then came the real software test. WinRar. As a winrar test i packed up 10 GB of music to test speeds. It took less than a minute to package up (compress) the 10 GB using the Best compression method, where as on a traditional hard drive your looking at 30 to 45 minutes of waiting maybe even more since i used the best method. Unpackaging (decompression) was instantaneous at the click of the mouse. Every thing i do is like a flash of light.3. Music and Movies - Not much to say here other than transfer speeds are high, but i wouldn't keep music or movies on an SSD, they don't play better or sound better, but they do take up limited space and put wear and tear on the drive. Best to leave them on the traditional hard drive.4. Benchmark - I have included a screenshot of the benchmarking program i used to test this hard drive. As you can see all test results exceed the specifications of this hard drive. I could to many different tests using many different settings but i stuck with the default and most used one.Construction - The SSD's construction is very nice. It is very strong and solid, but also very light almost like paper. It is very smooth and slim and should fit nearly anywhere you want to put it. Also the sata and power connectors are stiff and strong.Software - The samsung magician software that is paired with the hard drive is also very nice. It shows the health and total data written to the hard drive, can change windows options to better suit the SSD and its needs, encryption, the works. The only thing is that Rapid Mode does not work for windows 10 yet but Samsung says they are working hard on it, it has something to do with the new way windows 10 manages memory. Conclusion - Overall, this is the greatest hard drive Ive ever seen. Its super fast, super strong, has great software, and is backed up by a monster 10 year warranty. I looked forward to many years of extreme gaming with this SSD. I would highly haft to recommend this SSD to everyone. It is a truly great product made by a great company from a great nation. You wont be disappointed with this SSD.
Rapid Mode allows higher transfer rates that come closer in numbers to PCIe SSD Devices. So basically, yeah - the drive will be faster than other SSDs when it's enabled. The pro 850 model has a 10 year warranty as opposed to the 5 year for the 850 EVO. Both are great drives, either way.Samsung states the durability is such that you could write -at least- 150 Terabytes of data to this drive before it runs out of P/E cycles (short for program/erase cycle - the procedure of data being written, erased and re-written to the drive) and creates issues. That is amazing! It means that the majority of users won't 'use up' the drive in our lifetime, let alone the life of the existing computer it is housed in.Only drawback as of this review: The software used to enable ... MoreRapid Mode allows higher transfer rates that come closer in numbers to PCIe SSD Devices. So basically, yeah - the drive will be faster than other SSDs when it's enabled. The pro 850 model has a 10 year warranty as opposed to the 5 year for the 850 EVO. Samsung Magician does not list Windows 10 in its system requirements so even if it does work, it is most likely not supported yet. This issue is something I've read about, I have not seen it first hand.To be on the safe side, I uninstalled Samsung Magician before upgrading Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 in case there was an issue. I'm sure Samsung will have an update soon, so this will not pose as a real problem. You can still use the drive without it being enabled and it has great transfer speeds either way.
SUPER SOLID SSD EVER....What you want to know is this: is this SSD faster than the 850 EVO? When dealing with SSD's, does any appreciable difference in speed occur, since they are all so fast, anyway? The fact is this: I've been using Samsung SSD's of varying varieties for years, and when I recently replaced my Samsung 850EVO with this one (on my boot drive), the speed notice WAS undeniably different. Yes, I still has those couple of seconds of booting time after the POST routine finished, but instead of programs loading, they almost felt like they were POPPING, this thing is so fast.Is it worth the price? Hard to say. First, is what type of computer user are you? What types of programs do you typically run? And what type of system do you have? For example, if ... MoreSUPER SOLID SSD EVER....What you want to know is this: is this SSD faster than the 850 EVO? Hard to say. First, is what type of computer user are you? What types of programs do you typically run? And what type of system do you have? For example, if the bottleneck is in another part of the system, you may not get the most bang for your buck by spending the extra on this PRO version. But if you have a modern, well-specified computer, you will notice a speed difference. I certainly did. And now comes the wait until the 850 PRO prices come down, because what you really want is something like this, but in 4Tb or larger. It will be a few years before we see such storage, and at reasonable prices, but this drive clearly shows it is coming. For now, if you are dealing with a desktop, consider my strategy of using it as the boot disk with all your programs installed, and other, less expensive drives for storage. If this is for a laptop, you have to ask yourself if your laptop is new enough and powerful enough (RAM, processor, video system, etc.) to warrant the extra expense. All SSD drives are fast, and generally, scream past the traditional spin platter drives we all grew up with. But there IS a difference in how the memory in an SSD is constructed and then, of course, there is the often-overlooked factor of the controller attached to the disk, which also has an impact on speed.Of all the Samsung drives I've purchased, this is the best, and fastest. Its a superb drive that is a window into the future of SSD drives.
I bought this drive to upgrade my full and sluggish 1TB standard Windows 7 drive. I wasn't disappointed. I just found a space in the case, plugged it in, dropped my Windows 10 disk in the DVD drive and let the machine do it's thing. In just a few minutes this was up and running with no hassle. On my old drive it took 2'30" (according to Glarisoft Utilities Pro) to boot and even after that it took longer for everything to settle down and the drive still chattered away in the background even after running various utility programs. Now it takes just 15 seconds to boot into a fully stable working environment. That's faster than 98% of all Windows users! Yes it's only 256gb but I only intend to run Windows on the disk so it's ample for the job. It would also make a great ... MoreI bought this drive to upgrade my full and sluggish 1TB standard Windows 7 drive. I wasn't disappointed. I can now begin editing my photos after a shoot in seconds rather than the embarrassing 10-15 minutes it used to take to stabilise. Definately recommenfed
