1Rear channel distorted, lack of firmware upgrades

Decent enough soundbar--channel placement, effects & bass are quite good for movie watching. For listening to stereo audio though, this is not really the product for you as the stereo soundscape and upper frequencies leave much to be desired. The Q990B also does not remember which settings you used for your device inout; so if you for instance watched a movie on HDMI1, using the surround preset and higher bass levels, switching to BT for stereo listening will use the exact same settings--even though these were changed to stereo and -12dB for bass last time it was used -- thus they have to be modified every time. Some phone apps playing audio over BT insist on maxing the volume to 100 during start of playback, and the soundbar *really* should have options to prevent ... MoreDecent enough soundbar--channel placement, effects & bass are quite good for movie watching. Seems to be an impossible task to replace it now that the short warranty period has expired. For high-def music playback, the ability to support aptX would have been highly appreciated, but it is a missing feature with the Q990 soundbars. My 2y/o phone has it (priced at 1/4 of this product), so I do not see why it could not have been included for us music lovers.Lastly, the firmware updates are rather scarce, and do not at all describe what has actually been changed--or improved--in the form of a changelog. Seriously, Samsung? For a $2000 product I frankly expected more.

When Samsung released the HW-N950 with sound by Harmon Kardon, I sold my big box speaker system and enjoyed it until it died a few years later. In my opinion, Samsung has been the go-to for soundbar systems. I know there are some big name brands out there, but Samsung consistently makes an amazing product that envelops the user in surround sound. Now that I’ve probably bored you with my experience with Samsung soundbars, let’s talk about the HW-Q990D soundbar. It is an 11.1.4 Atmos soundbar, complete with wireless subwoofer and a pair of wireless satellites. The wireless sats serve several purposes: They supply surround and surround back effects, as well as Atmos effects using upfiring woofers built into the speaker. They are basically three speakers in one cabinet. If you have select Samsung TVs, you can use SpaceFit Sound to calibrate the soundbar to the area. I do not have a Samsung TV, so I was unfortunately not able to use the room calibration process. Which is a bummer. Many of Samsung’s competitors have room EQ on their soundbars, many of them costing less than the Q990D. Unfortunately, there is no white noise generator for the Q990D either, which would allow the user to use their own microphone and set channel levels. Nope, it is left up to the user to adjust settings and hope they get it right. The addition of Chromecast to the Q990D is excellent. In practice it functions perfectly. I was also able to use AirPlay to send music from my wife’s phone to the Q990D. Two HDMI ins as well as an eARC HDMI complete the inputs. I was able to play both my Xbox One X and PS4 without any issues through the Q990D. Picture quality was excellent, as well as the sound quality.Getting to sound quality…. While not as powerful sounding or as warm and smooth as my old HW-950, the Q990D is more enveloping and crystal clear with surround tracks. The first John Wick movie is an absolute bedlam of action, with extended fight scenes, lots of gunfights, and roaring cars. The Q990D handled the scenes with aplomb, the subwoofer digging down surprisingly low to add good heft to the sound. There is an end scene that takes place in the rain, and the upfiring speakers in the sats and main bar did a good job of making it seem like the rain was coming straight down from the ceiling. I was impressed for sure. Jumping ahead to John Wick 4, I watched the beginning scene where Keanu Reeves is punching a wooden 2x4 over and over again. The scene is mixed with heavy, heavy bass, a resounding thump taking place every time he hits that piece of wood. You’d think a semi was striking a steel tank, the way it sounds. Each impact came through resoundingly good through the Q990D system, the sub handling the hard bass impacts without issue. Again, pretty impressive for just an 8” sub. During extremely active scenes, there are times when the voices get a little lost, as if the center channel fades out a bit, but this is pretty typical of all soundbars. 99 percent of the time, the Q990D provided an excellent experience listening to movies of all genres.I only discovered one shortcoming (in my opinion) when it came to the 990D: Stereo music was not as good as with my prior Samsung soundbar. The 950 had Harmon Kardon tuning, and it really sounded good with plain old stereo music. The 990D is not quite as detailed, warm, and enjoyable when it comes to enjoying music. But it’s just a small quip, and most folks will be happy with the 990D as an all-around soundbar.All-in-all, I am very pleased with the Q990D and it occupies the place of honor below my main TV.

When you have a compatible Samsung TV, the tv speakers work in conjunction with the soundbar. I felt this was superfluous and turned it off. Why should I have tv speakers competing with a top of the line soundbar? Your impression may vary. At least it's easily disabled.Another feature, Spacefit Sound Pro, I was more interested in. This "calibrates" and adjusts the sound based on your specific area & acoustics. Having a room that was more "open" on one side than another, this suited my purpose. Not knowing the mechanics of it, I assume it is pumping more sound to the open area to fill the gap, I can only report that there is a difference, and it does sound better with the feature activated. The rear speakers are impressive units, and are front, top, and side firing. They appear well constructed and deliver a clean clear sound with no evidence of distortion, rattling, etc. If you don't have a stand or mount for them, you will need to pick up a suitable product.I'm not a student or disciple of surround sound, all I can say is I've been intrigued over the last week, hearing things in programming I haven't heard before, even in commercials. Or maybe a commercial jingle pops different sounds out of the rear. I assume there is some decoding tech going on in the electronics, all I can say is I'm enjoying the hell out of it!Also using the unit in combination with different devices, for instance, tapping on the soundbar with my Samsung phone to play content. Even more interesting, if you know what the Sound Burger is (a revival of an 80's mini portable turntable, now with Bluetooth - photo down below), I've connected that to the Q series to pump out some tunes. Yes, I do have an audiophile turntable in the same room, but as that doesn't use Bluetooth, I'll need some kind of RCA to HDMI device to make that magic as the Q only provides HDMI inputs. If there's one thing I'd knock on the Q, I really don't care for the LED screen behind the grill - it's small & hard to see behind the grill. I would've preferred a small screen, perhaps on top, to better identify inputs - it's very difficult to determine what Bluetooth device you're connecting.Other than that, very happy with the unit, and once again, thanks for making it so easy to hook up!

[Rewarded Review] Excellent sound, easy setup, but it's heavy
18 April 2024

I have used several soundbars in my time, and I have to say that this Samsung unit is the best so far. First, though, I have to say that this soundbar is big. The box it came in, which also includes the large subwoofer (about the size of a typical tower-style desktop computer) and the two small “surround” sound speakers, is about 8 ft by 2 ft by 1 ft and weighs close to 80 lbs. First, though, I have to say that this soundbar is big. The box it came in, which also includes the large subwoofer (about the size of a typical tower-style desktop computer) and the two small “surround” sound speakers, is about 8 ft by 2 ft by 1 ft and weighs close to 80 lbs. Expect to need help to move the box around. The soundbar itself is noticeably heavy, weighing close to 20 lbs, which is at least twice what my current soundbar weighs. The instructions warn you about the weight and advise firmly mounting to studs if you intend on mounting this on the wall. There are two metal L-brackets included to help with the mounting, but you must provide your own screws and anything else needed. I had my previous soundbar sitting on the mantle above my fireplace as my TV is mounted on the wall above the fireplace. All-in-all, it was a good combination, but this soundbar is too heavy to sit on the mantle as the mantle is not sitting on top of anything but rather hangs from the wall.I placed this soundbar on top of a bookshelf to one side of the TV. I didn’t think this would be ideal at first, but after using it for watching several kinds of TV shows, it has turned out better than I expected. I attribute this to several factors, which I’ll get to shortly.First, though, setup couldn’t be easier. Once you’ve wrestled the soundbar into place however you plan to mount it, connection is simply the power cord and an HDMI cable connected, preferably, to the E-ARC HDMI port on your TV. This allows the TV and the soundbar to communicate with each other, so your TV remote can turn the soundbar on and off, control the soundbar’s volume, and so forth.Connection of the peripheral speakers could not be easier. A power cord is included for each. Just place them where you want them, keeping in mind that each needs a connection to an A/C outlet. The speakers connect wirelessly and automatically to the soundbar once everything is powered up. There is a blue light on the back of each speaker that flashes until the connection is made, after which it turns solid blue. I switched the soundbar on first, then plugged in each speaker in succession (the peripheral speakers do not have power switches), and each connected to the soundbar in just a second or two.Control of the soundbar’s functions is primarily through the included remote. The only controls on the soundbar itself are a power button, up and down volume controls, and a button to turn the soundbar’s internal microphone on and off. There is a small digital display on the soundbar that indicates which of the four sound modes is selected, and these are “surround,” “game pro,” “standard,” and “adaptive.” I haven’t had a chance to use all of these to their best extent, but I have found so far that the “surround” option gives the fullest, richest sound, which doesn’t surprise me. This is why, as I mentioned above, the sound turned out to be pretty good considering that the soundbar is offset from the TV. The surround speakers are basically on each side at 90 degrees from the viewing angle, and the subwoofer is just to the side of the fireplace and closer to being beneath the TV than the soundbar itself. The volumes of the subwoofer and surround speakers can be separately controlled by the remote. All together, the sound experience is excellent, with a fuller, richer sound than I had before. This soundbar features Dolby Atmos, the newer surround-sound technology that is more complicated to explain than can be done here. I don’t know how many routine TV programs are able to take advantage of it, but I have heard audio through this and previous soundbars I have owned that have this technology, and there definitely is a difference in sound quality. This soundbar also features a Samsung-specific surround-sound technology called “Q-Symphony.” This technology works only with Samsung TVs that have the Q-symphony feature, and, rather than simply turning off the TV’s internal speakers when the soundbar is connected, the Q-symphony feature makes use of the TV’s internal speakers in conjunction with the soundbar and peripherals to produce, according to Samsung, an even more enhanced sound experience. Samsung’s argument is that their TV’s internal speakers are pretty good quality themselves, and it is a waste of opportunity not to make use of them in setting up the full soundbar-based system. I do not have a Samsung TV, so I could not try this feature.I attribute some of the better sound of this soundbar compared to the previous ones I’ve owned, none of which were anything other than excellent devices, to this soundbar’s physical size. As I’ve noted, it’s bigger. A lot bigger. The speakers in it therefore are larger and have larger enclosures. The subwoofer is about twice the size of my previous one as well. All together, the soundbar and the three peripheral speakers work well to produce a great sound. I expect years of great listening with this new setup, or at least until the next great sound technology comes along!

We bought the Samsung Q990D Soundbar package to use together with our new 83-inch LG OLED TV in a new home theater set-up. We were slightly hesitant about pairing the LG with a Samsung set rather than LG or Sonos (which we considered and liked), but our worries were unfounded and we have been very happy with it. It links to the TV using eARC HDMI 2.1 cables and the Dolby Sound really enriches what is already a great surround system. The speakers get more than loud enough for any kind of material without distortion and expand the surround-space and project rear and side sound effects quite realistically. The speakers get more than loud enough for any kind of material without distortion and expand the surround-space and project rear and side sound effects quite realistically. It's slightly bright, but you can adjust that somewhat in the Samsung app you can download on your phone that provides more adjustments than you can make with the remote and manual buttons on the main soundbar. The main soundbar in front sounds as good as or better than anything else we heard, with great mids and clear, distinct dialogue. But the subwoofer is the real surprise - it's got some real oomph and richness to its range and lends a true 3-dimensional quality to the sound. This system makes everything sound great, but it really shines with movies, where the Dolby Sound kicks in and really heightens the surround effects. It also makes music videos come to life. One negative is that the surround effects are highly dependent on room layout and size. Ours is rectangular at about 14 x 19 with a 9 ft ceiling, with two doors that we can close to give us the right sound reflections. Open floor plans or much higher ceilings might not be conducive to optimizing the surround and Dolby features this system uses so effectively.

As a family who utilizes the television for movies, music and gaming, the ability to utilize various pre-sets for optimal sound is a huge plus. We utilize Party Mode when entertaining guests and playing music. We utilize Private mode for late-night television when our kids are sleeping. The HDMI 2.1 has made it possible for my husband to utilize 4k 120HZ when playing his favorite games. We absolutely love the level of elevation provided by the Samsung Q990D across the board. As far as technology goes, this soundbar is incredibly intuitive-- and compatible with our existing smart hub programs, Alexa, Google, etc.. The combination of Dolby Atmos advancements and Samsungs latest Q Symphony technology just can't be beat! Such an amazing system, will totally amplify television, movies, music and gaming-- feel like you are actually there!

[Rewarded Review] Premium Home Theater Experience

The Samsung HW-Q990D 11.1.4 Q-Series soundbar with wireless subwoofer and rear speakers featuring Dolby Atmos is a great product for a home theater setup.Pros:• Packaging – The packaging was well thought out with the speakers and subwoofer separately secured in Styrofoam on the bottom and the soundbar placed on top. Even though the box took some damage during shipping nothing arrived broken. The way it was packed made unpacking quick and easy with not a lot of waste (all things considered).• Setup – Of all the soundbar, subwoofer, speaker packages I have purchased in the past, the Samsung 11.1.4 Q-Series was the easiest to setup out of the box. While prior soundbars have given me issues with wireless connection to the subwoofer and/or speakers, the HW-Q990D worked without issue. There wasn’t anything extra required to pair them after plugging them in. I connected the system to my Epson ultra short throw projector in our theater room via ARC without any issue as well.• Sound – The sound is fantastic for the price point and does not disappoint! With 11 front-facing speakers, 1 subwoofer with rich bass, and 4 up-firing channels I get the movie theater experience at home. One thing I noticed immediately was that I could hear the voices from TV shows and movies clearly, especially at low volume. The prior soundbar I had in the room made understanding dialogue difficult, notably during action packed/loud scenes and I would find myself having to put subtitles on. Samsung overcomes this through active voice analyzer and adaptive sound to optimize onscreen voices and it works amazingly. Sound Pro also analyzes the room, calibrates the system, and automatically adjusts the audio.• Wall Mounting Kit – It is nice that the kit to mount the soundbar is included; however, no wall anchors are included. If Samsung is going to include the brackets, include appropriate standard wall anchors for the weight. I ended up having to make a trip to a local big box hardware store to get a set of anchors that would hold the weight of the soundbar.Cons:• Remote – The remote is not backlit and hard to see in the dark.Overall, I love this soundbar and it gets a 100% recommendation from me.

Are there enough features to upgrade? Here are the top features for 2024 :HDMI 2.1 with 4K/120Hz passthrough: A major improvement over the previous model, making it ideal for gamers.Powerful and immersive sound: The 11.1.4-channel system with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X which creates a rich and detailed soundscape.Q-Symphony 3.0: Integrates seamlessly with compatible Samsung TVs for enhanced audio performance.Private Listening Mode: This feature allows you to use only the rear speakers for quiet listening, perfect for late-night movie sessions without disturbing others.Spacefit Sound Calibration: Tailors the sound to your specific room layout for an optimized listening experience.Active Voice Amplifier Pro: Uses AI to enhance dialogue clarity, ensuring you never miss a word.Party Play Mode: This mode creates a balanced sound across the entire system, including the rear speakers, ensuring everyone in the room enjoys a cohesive listening experience.Roon high-resolution music streaming support. The answer to the question above will depend on your budget. Some things to consider is total cost. Since the HW-Q990D is Samsung’s high-end model, it will come with a high price tag to match.Previous year owners of Samsung’s high-end soundbars will need to determine whether the newest features are worth upgrading and would you actually have use for them. The soundscape is still stellar, and fill large rooms. In conclusion, the Samsung HW-Q990D is a premium soundbar that delivers exceptional sound quality, a whole host of features, and improved next-gen console compatibility with the addition of HDMI 2.1 for 4k/120Hz. If this is your first Samsung Premium high soundbar, this is a must buy. To all the existing owners, I would recommend a wait and see approach. Consider all aspects before taking the plunge.

[Rewarded Review] The Atmosphere of a Home Symphony

Using HDMI eARC on my Samsung S95C QD-OLED TV, the soundbar automatically connected on powerup and configured the Q-Symphony setting. You can see the difference in my surround speaker images. The speaker on the left is the Q990C, which is a greyish color, while the Q990D on the right is solid black. Trust me when I say it is a huge improvement in how good the soundbar looks under your TV.The remote is the same slim formfactor as last year's model, with the convenient "CH LEVEL" button that lets you navigate directly to speaker level adjustments, and the "TONE CONTROL" button that takes you right to the bass and treble adjustments. If you haven't purchased a Samsung soundbar in a few years, you'll find these buttons a convenient addition to the remote. The sound on this unit is loud, and I mean loud, and the base is comparable to an actual movie theater. Where the HW-Q990D really shines is its implementation of Dolby Atmos. When you watch content that has full Dolby Atmos support, the depth and accuracy of the directional sound will leave you speechless. If you are using a Q-Symphony enabled Samsung TV, it literally sounds like voices are coming directly out of the characters' mouths on the screen. If you are looking for a full-scale soundscape in video games, movies, and sports, the HW-Q990D will give you that and so much more in a convenient and compact formfactor. I promise this soundbar will make your friends and family jealous of your home setup.

[Rewarded Review] The Best Sound Bar That Exists Today
13 March 2024

Two of my TVs had an older, Vizio 5.1 soundbar setup, and while it sounded good, I was excited to upgrade to Atmos on one of them. The first thing I noticed straight out of the box was the sheer size and weight of it. Traditionally, soundbars use tiny, underpowered drivers and make compromises to fit into a small form factor. That clearly was not the case here. The soundbar itself probably weighed twice as much as my old Vizio bar, and the surround speakers were at least double the size. The soundbar is impressive in its performance. SpaceFit Sound Pro is so much better than doing a manual calibration, and the rear speakers have up-firing drivers to really drive home that Atmos sound quality. Clearly, the gap has been closed significantly between soundbars and a true home theater setup, and for most people it will be the best option. Yes, it's expensive, but it is still much cheaper than a traditional Atmos setup, not to mention you would need to drill a bunch of holes in your ceiling and run wires for that. The only real complaint I have is that the amp for the rear speakers is in the speaker itself, which means the speakers need plugged into power to work. I have speaker wires run for surround sound setups already, but they require speaker wire, not power wires. Oddly enough, the cheaper Samsung soundbars actually use a system with an external amp that would work much better with my setup (and I'm guessing others' as well), but I'll figure out a way to make it work with wire molding or something.Still, it's an incredible soundbar. You literally cannot buy a better one on the market today than the Samsung 990D. If you value sound quality but do not want to spend thousands, run wires, and install speakers in your ceiling, this is what you want to buy.
