I ordered this lens primarily for night and low light photography. My tests indicate that it is very well suited for those uses in addition to being a good lens for full-frame daytime work.

This lens is very nice. It is sharp from F1.4 and all the way up. It is definitely heavy. It balances nicely on my K1 though, and while it is a little front heavy on my K3 it works very nicely on APSC. I bought it specifically to fill that gap of not having anything like a real fast 50 on APSC and it does not disappoint. But also because 35mm is my go to FL for landscapes with my K1 and this is very sharp, and I can use it on my Pentax film SLRs as well. Manual focusing through the OVF is made easy by going through the steps to do AF Fine Adjustment just like you would for an AF lens only you use the Apply All setting so you have to remember to set it for this lens when you put it on, and set it back to Apply One for your AF lenses when you put them on. Once tuned ... MoreThis lens is very nice. It is sharp from F1.4 and all the way up. It is definitely heavy. Once tuned in the focus indicator in the OVF is just as reliably as for your AF lenses. Of course live view focusing also works and is great with focus peaking when super fine focusing is required. Overall I am quite happy. Build quality is good, focus ring is nice and smooth.

This Samyang is very well built with a dream finish. Tested on Nikon D5100, APS-C format, optically is very good but at the same aperture, under f/4, is not better than my Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/2, on almost all the frame. The differences are almost negligible, observing details at 200% The Zeiss (new), only in the corners, show details slightly muddy, as out of focus, while the Samyang in the corners offers the sharpest details. Probably the Zeiss have more field curvature, but only far from the center. Wide open and until f/2.8, the coma aberration are similar, very low for both, perhaps the Samyang is a little better at the same apertures. I am a little perplexed by the not so good transparency of the lenses, with little yellow colour, they are not really ... MoreThis Samyang is very well built with a dream finish. The Zeiss is much clearer. Despite this, that surprised me more is that to get the same exposure level, both lenses setted at the same aperture, with the Zeiss you must prolong the exposure time of about 70%. In other words the Samyang, setted at the same aperture, appear to be brighter than the Zeiss, brighter of about 2/3 stop.

I use the Samyang 35mm F1.4 lens on my Sony A7r via a 'dumb' adaptor. The images it produces are very sharp when properly focused and the falloff and background bokeh is excellent. The images have a character which is different from my Zeiss lenses but not necessarily better or worse. The images are quite pleasing. Physically the lens is very well built. The focus throw is just the right length and is very smooth to rotate. This results in easy and quick focusing however a little bit of practice is required. On the negative side the aperture ring is quite small and because of its location, I sometimes had trouble finding it it. A slightly forward location or even perhaps a different texture would make it a lot easier to use. At any price this is an excellent lens ... MoreI use the Samyang 35mm F1.4 lens on my Sony A7r via a 'dumb' adaptor. However to get this kind of quality at 1/3 or less the price of a similar lens from a mainstream brand is simply astonishing.
Good low light performance, impressed with portraits thanks
Very strong and durable lens with great bokeh. Perfect for low light. Pairs well with sony since sony implements peaking factor and manual focus zoom in their cameras making it a breeze to shoot with. Very large and heavy though. To be expected from a 1.4 aperture 35mm lens.
I love this lens on my K-1. It's very sharp wide open and aberrations are well controlled.
Seems to produce good quality work. Just need to make a couple of tweaks to camera as it will present itself as an unsupported lens (because it is manual and has no contacts as with autofocus lenses). Good saving against autofocus models at 35mm.
Using this on a D800E and getting awesome resolution, contrast and color. Really sharp. I have the DK-17M on the camera to help me focus it, but the focus indicator in the view finder is right on. Today I got a Madagascar lizard with it while testing the lens. It's amazing. This lens is already my favorite wide angle, and it's got the 14-24mm f/2.8 to compete with. Great choice!
I had high hopes that the focus confirm chip would be helpful; as modern slr's are not really equipped for manual focus. I am disappointed, the glass is wonderful, the bokeh is pleasing and in focus images are sharp, but only after fiddling with it. All images using focus confirm are off, just a little, but clearly off. Also, I thought this had an infinity stop but is also a bit off.
