Excellent lense for portrait!

In the beginning, I hesitate for buying this lens.. I thought it just a matter of waisting money on such a cheap lense! But I saw almost all reviews about it are positive here. And that encourage me to go ahead with it. I am using this lense now for almost a Year.. The results was absolutely amazing. Very sharp, beautiful colours and easy to focuse on subject using manual focus! Also the built quality is fantastic.I strongly recommend this lens for portrait photography.

A fantastic portrait lens suitable also for astrophotography thanks to the 1.4 max aperture. Sharpness is very good at every aperture; it is a bit soft at f/1.4, but at f/4 it is very sharp and still has great bokeh. Focusing ring is very precise and comfortable, you will get use very quickly with manual focus. The minimum focus distance is 1 m (or 3.3') so the lens is not suitable for close-ups. A bit heavy but very well built. It works also on the new full frame Pentax K1. I absolutely reccomend this lens.

I've never owned a dedicated portrait lens before. I usually used a wide to telephoto zoom to cover portraits unless using medium format. The lens itself does everything I wanted it to and more. If you're looking for an inexpensive alternative to your brand's 85 you won't go wrong buying this.

Great lens for a great price

So far, seems to be a very well built lens. It's heavy and sturdy. Captures crisp photos. Great bokeh wide open.If you plan on manually adjusting the aperture while using the lens, it is a little tricky. The adjustments are really close to the camera and, personally, my fingers are too big to get in there. I just leave it on A and adjust in camera.

I'm excited about the possibilities with this lens. It just has a solid feel to it. Yes,it is a manual focus lens but you should know that by reading the description of the product. If you've never used manual focus much, practice and you'll save a lot of money and at the same time have a high quality portrait lens at your disposal! It's a little soft wide open but you can still get quality images. Stop it down to f/5.6 or f/8 and it's tack sharp. If you're going to be photographing fast moving subjects, you need to look elsewhere. Otherwise, buy this lens and you won't be disappointed!

Much better than anticipated

I got this Samyang 85mm f1.4 in Pentax mount. There is A position on aperture ring so this lens works in aperture priority mode very nice. Didn't try other modes as I use them seldom. It meters correctly and exposures are perfect. You can change aperture at the dial on camera body. Mine is Pentax K5 II. All you need to do with this lens is to focus it manually. Basically, your hand is motor for this lens. However on Pentax, there is available focus indicator in the optical viewfinder, and once you achieve focus it will blink / beep so you may shoot. Initially, I didn't adjust any focus correction in the camera body and focus indication was not reliable. However, once I dialed the focus correction to -10, I could perfectly rely on it, i.e. on f1.4 once the indicator would blink I could shoot with confidence. Photos are sharp even at f1.4, sometimes incredibly sharp, and I only shoot at it, i.e. fully wide open to get amazingly smooth bokeh in outdoor portraits. Background simply melts around your subjects. Now, all you need is to practice getting focus on these settings, and it gets better every day. Especially if you're taking portraits, since the subjects are static, this lens is more than adequate. Build quality of the lens is stunning. There's nothing to creep, no loose parts, metal mount and high tolerances of manufacturing. Lens is compact in size and has good weight. Lot of glass in it. Very high quality product overall. Amazing value for the money paid. BHPhoto delivered this lens as stated in their email after purchase many thousands miles away. This was my first time I shopped at BH and I am more than happy.

New lens has focus issues
11 November 2022

I find it inconceivable that such a new lens still has the problem of focusing. Ever since I gave up on saving my Nikon 200MM F/2 G VR in order to raise a down payment for a house, queue up. When my financial problems started to stabilize, I suddenly wanted to shoot street scenes, I kept wandering among Rokinon/Samyang 85mm 1.4, Sigma 85mm F/1.4 DG HSM ART, SONY G, because I used Nikon, Canon, Sony body. I still think there are so many problems with such a cheap no-brand lens, despite being so cheap, this lens is only $466 on Amazon prime days, and $480 on eBay for refurbished lenses, certainly suitable for EF Canon bodies only $400, maybe it has an updated focus system, but I still think it's nowhere near as durable as the my old Canon 200MM f/1.8. Open to remind that this lens already has a second generation. Now it costs $800, which is almost the same price as the greymarket Sigma ART.

Not perfect but worth an addition to your kit for the price

This lens is ideal for portraits and still life photography. Being f1.4 the depth of field is so small you really have to take your time with this lens since it is manual focus. If you're doing run and gun I would not recommend using this lens. But the manual focus does force you to slow down and think about your composition. It is sharp wide open and the bokeh is really nice, however there is some severe chromatic abberration when shooting in bright light and high contrast when shooting wide open. It feels solidly built. I don't know how often I will use this lens because I actually prefer using my 70-200mm f2.8 for portraits seems to get similar depth of field and bokeh if you double the distance from your subject, but there will be times when in tight spaces that ... MoreThis lens is ideal for portraits and still life photography. Full manual, no image stabalization, and exif data but the image quality you can get with this lens, at $230 it probably is the second best value for money (the 50mm Canon f1.8 is still the best bang for your buck in my opinion)

Remarkable quality for an inexpensive lens.

You get the sense that your average Canon engineer will (on the QT) use Samyang lenses. No autofocus, no auto-aperture. When you stop down the lens, what you see is what you get. The focusing ring is mechanical, so you don't have any sense of disconnection, when you engage focus. How it should be? But, there's more: Lenses from Samyang are fast: F 1.4 is a very fast lens. Coupled with the obvious quality of the optics, you won't be disappointed. You may also discover extended battery life, as the camera does not power any lens functions. All told? A refreshing rediscovery about what photography is all about. Get away from autofocus, and embrace the art in all of its dimensions, including manual selection of focus and aperture.

my favourite lens

I was looking for a little longer lens for night photography. This one was so inexpensive I decided to try it. It's too long for big pano Milky Way shots but for night cityscape, blue hour and day landscape shots it's superb. I found the infinity focus, taped it with gaffers tape and rarely use it for anything else. Very sharp, great color.

These Samyang 85 mm F1.4 AS IF UMC aspherical lenses feature new UMC (Ultra Multi Coatings) which aid the very high level of light transmission, and add further resistance to flare and ghosting. The 85 mm F1.4 lenses are manual focus primes, designed to give exceptional results at wide apertures. At F1.4 great images can be obtained, which is perfect for portraiture and low light shooting. The Samyang 85 mm is also suited to cropped sensors, including APS-C / DX sensors, it gives approximately 120 mm focal length equivalent. Coupled with the fast F1.4 aperture gives an excellent portrait lens for tighter head shots or working from a distance with cropped sensor cameras, or for shooting in various low light conditions. The bokeh (the character of the out-of-focus blur) is a primary concern for professionals choosing an ultra large aperture lens for shallow depth-of-field photography. The Samyang 85 mm F1.4 lens design offers excellent bokeh quality of out-of-focus highlights when used near wide open such as at F1.4 and F2. The lens optical construction comprises of 9 lenses divided into 7 optical groups with one aspheric lens element. The Samyang 85 mm is designed with internal focusing (IF) meaning the lens does not increase in size when focusing. A further positive aspect to internal focusing is that the lens is much less likely to get dust inside.
