For the price, this is an outstanding prime lens. I agree with other reviews that it's a little soft at 2.8 but is quite clear at F4. The edges are sharper than all of my Sony brand zoom lenses as well. The filter sixe, 40.5mm is a little harder to find than 49. Unlike my other lenses, it stops down while focusing. That means, you see exactly the depth of field and bokeh you'll get in the photo. On the down side, that can make focusing a little harder in some lighting conditions.

If you want a pancake lens (with AF!) for Sony FE mount, look no further. I give this 5 stars in comparison to other small lenses. The only comparison to this lens (at similar focal length) is the Sony 35mm 2.8, at nearly $. The Sony lens will get you better image quality(for pixel peepers), with slightly better AF performance, and a similar, 1oz heavier size. It's up to you whether the ~$ difference is worth it. I am amazed at the quality and clarity of this lens given the price. I compared side-by-side with the more expensive Sony Zeiss 35 mm pancake lens and it’s actually sharper. The size of this lens adds a whole Nother dimension of portability and functionality for me. It’s as small as one of those compact point and shoot cameras with this lens. I can actually slip it in my jacket pocket and carry it around conveniently.

I use the Samyang 35mm f2.8 on a Sony A7ii as my everyday walk around lens. IQ is simply that of a good quality prime especially at 4.0 and up. Images at 2.8 are certainly very usable but a pixel peeper will notice some lack of sharpness in the corners. Colors are realistic. Size is a real plus with this lens. Makes a very nice combination with the A7ii, easy to carry for extended periods of time. Recently took some night photos at the beach and was very pleased with the results. Did require a tripod, f4.0 and ISO 640. I own the Zeiss 55mm f1.8 and feel that stopped down the Samyang competes, not the same but it does hold its own.
This was the second E-Mount lens I bought and I love it. Excellent performance even full frame. Super light for hiking, I often use this on an A7 body for travel to make an incredibly useful combination. I even prefer it at times to my f1.4 35mm.My summer trip through glacier park, I only brought this lens on my A7 Mark 2. See included image.
Fantastic lens, as the likes of Sean Tucker will attest to.It's the perfect street and travel lens. On firmware v.03 it's tack sharp in the middle at 2.8 and if you stop down to f5 ish it'll be sharp across the entire frame.High build quality and excellent bokeh, it's unbelievable that this is under 300 dollars. With my A7iii it has yet to fail me in terms of image quality, bokeh, night and day shots, movement and slow shutter speed. On current firmware the Autofocus and Eye AF ware working fantastically.
I liked the lens -- light, good IQ, auto focus somewhat slow on NEX5N body but acceptable. Unfortunately, my copy developed focusing issues: despite camera reporting perfect focus, the result was unfocused, slightly blurry image even in good light and with high contrast subjects. The problem was intermittent but it happened often enough for me to return the lens. The lens firmware was 0.3 version, the camera was on the latest firmware.
I am Sony shooter and pro photographer for over 15 years. This lens is awesome for the price, offering amazing image quality, full AF functionality, amazingly light weight, super portable. The AF is fairly fast. On A7R2 performs great. The build quality is not fantastic but it has a metal mount and it's made out of a combination of plastic and aluminum. The IQ is pretty much on par with the Zeiss. For the money you pay this is a great lens to have!! I would've rated 5 stars if the build quality was a little better. wwwchrisneacsucom
I was undecided between this and the Sony equivalent at twice the price. This got great reviews and I'm happy to say that I would agree - it's an excellent lens, sharp and contrasty without being too 'brittle'. The autofocus works perfectly and it's very small and light, which is why I bought it. My previous career as a professional industrial photographer means I like light weight for travel but also great quality for the travel work I now do with Sony 7 series cameras. It's only been a short while and I might re-visit this after an extended trip later in the year, but so far, so good!
Just received mine today. Paired it with my A7Riii for street photography and family snaps, and it has been flawless so far. I think the initial batch must have had a bad firmware. Mine is very silent, and quite quick with AF.I am liking the fact that the combination of the light weights of the lens and the body makes it a really portable full frame camera.I could see it being a really nice lens to accompany the newly announced A7iii.
