I can't put into words how frustratingly annoying my experiences with this SanDisk hard drives have been. There has been absolutely zero user error on my part. I did this a frustrating three times in a row, each time lasting about an hour, and it never fully managed to handle the transfer. My last SanDisk G-Drive, I unfortunately threw out the packaging so cannot return for a refund. SanDisk accepted a warranty request to replace the hard drive (after two customer service representatives both tried implying it was my fault and I must've done something wrong.) After that all happened, I decided with this second SanDisk I would keep the packaging. I bought it when BH was having a huge sale, and decided I'd give SanDisk one more try, and maybe it was just the G-Drive branded one that had troubles. I regret having bought a SanDisk a second time only for it to fail. Luckily I have the packaging this time and will return it for a full a refund and buy only Samsung SSDs from now on. I highly, I highly recommend never buying any SanDisk hard drive and just sticking to Samsung. These drives are worse than my ten years old LaCie hard drives.

I bought this SanDisk 2TB USB-C nVME drive so I can edit video directly from it on a 2020 M1 Macbook Air with 16GB RAM. I haven't edited anything from it yet, but I did run the Blackmagic Disk Speed test on it. As you can see from the screenshot, the drive achieved 617.2MB/sec writes and 763.9MB/sec reads. Since I will not be editing anything larger than 4K, according to these tests, it is fast enough for all my editing needs. I also hooked the drive to my 9th gen i7 Windows laptop with 32GB RAM and ran the PC version of the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test. Surprisingly, the Windows laptop achieved faster read speeds with the drive (923MB/s) than the M1 Macbook Air. The write speeds are a bit slower (537.9MB/sec) but not by much. What I like in particular about the Extreme V2 is the high transfer speeds do not suddenly drop when the internal cache is full. To get maximum speed, make sure you connect it to a port that supports 10Gb/s USB3.2 gen 2 speeds. I did try it with a cheap passive hub that only supports 5Gb/s USB3.2 gen1 and the transfer speed was indeed cut in half. Because it uses an NvMe drive rather than a 2.5 SATA, it's really tiny. Like all high speed devices these days, it does get quite warm in use but not enough to be uncomfortable to pick up. Just a few days after copying all my files to the SSD, and formatting my memory cards, the drive stops working. Mac OS is telling me to either eject, ignore or format. I tried everything from repairing with disk utility to whatever other tips i could find online about it. When digging deeper, and looking through reviews on Amazon, it seems like i am not the only one with this problem. Especially with the 4TB version. A lot of people have just like me been very happy with their 2TB versions, but the 4TB ones have been a disaster. There's no way I'll trust it to work properly again after formatting it 4 times ... I trust them to be the working repository of my digital photography as I work with 45-60MB RAW files and my finished images are often 300MB TIFFs, so it's important to that I have "complete" trust in the drives. Of course, I have two backup systems (a 48TB NAS and less portable SSDs that are not kept online) because there's no guarantee that I won't leave one of these small, light drives somewhere, that some kind of physical damage could occur or that files could be corrupted or infected even though I'm pretty careful about any of those situations. These drives could only be improved upon in capacity, so I'm buying the 2GB unit next (there IS a 4TB unit in both this line and the PRO version but at $700 and $900 respectively, they're a bit out of my price range at this point). The one concern you might have is the lack of thermal ventilation but looking at results from DriveDx, the best SSD diagnostic software, I am not even close to the thermal limit of this drive after using it for an hour of Photoshop editing and saving. I'm guessing that the rubberized external coating, while providing good tactile feel and better gripability, is relatively thin (while still likely to absorb energy of a fall; also because it is so lightweight, the potential for damage is low anyway), allowing for dissipation of heat energy from nearly 100% of the device's surface. Also, if you're concerned about the lifetime of an SSD, DriveDx tells me that after 2.4TB of writes and 86.8TB of reads, approximately 100% of one of the drives' life remains. I've owned these for nearly 2 years, using them on a nearly daily basis (2130 hrs and 764 powercycle counts for unit 1 and 871 hrs and 364 powercycle counts for unit 2), so neither unit is demonstrating significant electronic "wear and tear". Bottom line, as a user, computer consultant, and photographer, I unequivocally trust these drives. I'm ready to order my 2TB SanDisk Extreme SSD V2 now.

I am a loyal Mac user and my college uses PC predominately, so I needed an external hard drive that could safely save and store files and have them in a format that would transfer well between Mac and PC and some various educational and lab software and not have to constantly deal with file type conversions. I also needed this to handle a vast amount of school files, internship files, and personal files and wasn't a pain to haul around or worry about it getting hacked. It is small about the size of a deck of cards but slightly thinner and fits in the palm of my hand, clips onto my keyring, and came with both a usb and usb-c connector (idk if it works with lightning connectors or iPhone/IOS storage haven't tried that yet) but it has managed everything from Microsoft Word Products to Apple Pages products to videos, audio recordings, pictures, CAD files, Texas Instrument Calculator Files, Apps and Programs I rarely use, etc and has been amazing. For the average college student and person I would say its a perfect backup hard drive but for me and my excessively large files it makes a wonderful portable flash drive! I hate paying for cloud storage and I like my digital data in a more tangible form.. so far it has saved me money. In my 90 or so days of use it has been phenomenal!
I was very excited to have a 4TB external SSD. I connected it to my Mac Mini (2018 version) and formatted the drive as HFS+. I started copying my files over, and everything worked perfectly at first. After about half a day of organizing and transferring data, roughly 1.5TB, the drive unmounted itself. It had become corrupt and could not be mounted or repaired with Disk Utility / First Aid. I returned the drive for a replacement, thinking it was a random bad piece of hardware. When the replacement drive arrived, I decided to format it as APFS just in case the latest Apply filesystem was somehow better at handling large external SSDs. This time, I went slowly and carefully with the data transfer and stopped every so often to unmount the drive and allow the system to clean itself up. I go further this time with >2TB of data transferred, but ultimately the same failure. Several days over the course of the week were completely wasted, and now I'm shopping for a new 4T SSD from another vendor.

It is so tactile you'll find yourself absentmindedly running your fingers over the drop-resistant surface. It becomes meditative, like prayer beads or a fidget spinner. I have primarily used this SSD to move shows and movies to my android phone, easily accomplished with X-Plore or Total Commander. This thing is resilient. Like, so resilient I felt compelled to write this, my first ever review, because the world needs to know. Sure, this SSD survived flying thousands of miles and suffered use and abuse for six months aboard a Los-Angeles-class Fast Attack Submarine, but it faced its greatest challenge upon returning to shore: when it went through the washer and dryer. And it still works. My files are still intact and accessible. Now, I don't know if the engineers at SanDisk took this thing home and left it in their own shorts to be put through the wash - for science - and I certainly don't recommend anyone try this on their own, but I was ecstatic to discover that The Little SSD That Could still could. If I were to give this piece of modern engineering a con, it would be: The SanDisk Extreme Portable Solid State Drive is so small and so portable you can forget it's in your pocket and accidentally send it through the washer and dryer. But if you want a reliable, laundry-resistant SSD, you can't go wrong here. Just get yourself the 2TB model; you deserve it.
