(about 8 years ago I had some trouble with G-Drive so would usually skip those, but a friend highly recommended the SanDisk G-Drive to me, check my review on there, but long story it failed and was horrible within first few days of owning it).As for this drive, this started failing within first use. It couldn't handle transferring 100gbs worth of photos. I had to reformat multiple times, restart my computer, and finally I got it to take some folders from my old Samsung T5 from 2016. However, everytime I tried transferring an 800gb folder, the harddrive and laptop would get so hot that it would shutdown halfway through. I did this a frustrating three times in a row, each time lasting about an hour, and it never fully managed to handle the transfer. My last SanDisk G-Drive, I unfortunately threw out the packaging so cannot return for a refund. SanDisk accepted a warranty request to replace the hard drive (after two customer service representatives both tried implying it was my fault and I must've done something wrong.) After that all happened, I decided with this second SanDisk I would keep the packaging. I bought it when BH was having a huge sale, and decided I'd give SanDisk one more try, and maybe it was just the G-Drive branded one that had troubles.I regret having bought a SanDisk a second time only for it to fail. Luckily I have the packaging this time and will return it for a full a refund and buy only Samsung SSDs from now on.I highly, I highly recommend never buying any SanDisk hard drive and just sticking to Samsung. These drives are worse than my ten years old LaCie hard drives.

I bought this in 2021 based on good reviews and great specs. I just needed a reliable and fast, easily portable external drive, for making back-ups of my MacBook.I have used it probably only 14 times in the 2 years I have owned it. When not in use, it lives in its original packaging in a drawer in my desk - it has never left my house. It looks brand new!Having last used it about 4 weeks ago with no issues, 3 days ago I plugged it in as usual and it didn't work - my Mac couldn't detect it. I followed all the diagnostics on the Sandisk website, the conclusion being that the drive was faulty.I then took it to a branch of iStore (where I had originally purchased it) and they did their own tests, arriving at the same conclusion: faulty drive. The outer packaging ... MoreI bought this in 2021 based on good reviews and great specs. Also, if ever I had to hand this drive back in order to activate a manufacturer warranty (which I am investigating currently), if someone had the ability to get into it, they would have access to all my personal data.Having since researched in more detail, it seems many users of this product (and related Sandisk products) have had similar issues - so be very careful before you buy on the back of reviews from people who have not had theirs for very long. It seems that the internal design (the bits we cant see) is not as clever as one would think and is causing a lot of people some serious headaches, with the company very slow to do anything about it.

Initially, I was really happy with my purchase - sizable storage capacity, fast, and small form factor, all-in-one. I was planning to partition it and use it for both storing files and backing up my MacBook Pro. However, as I've since learned, this product from SanDisk was very shoddily put together, with poor quality components, etc. Another reviewer, Duped, mentioned an Ars Technica article entitled, SanDisk’s silence deafens as high-profile users say Extreme SSDs still broken, from August 8, 2023. I highly recommend everyone to read that article, as well as another article from Ars Technica titled "SanDisk Extreme SSDs are “worthless,” multiple lawsuits against WD say." I caught this on a Cyber Monday sale, so I ended up with a 4 terabyte external SSD for about $200. Upload/download speeds are decent for only using a USB-C connection, but it gets smoked by even the hard drive in my 5 or so year-old pre built. You're not rivaling any of your internal components for sure. It's also a lot smaller than I expected. Still the shell is a highlight for me, it feels less likely to fall off a desk if you set it down. Shell has some grip to it. It does get pretty warm though, so be ready to stop using it from time to time.Recently it has struggled a bit especially with video playback. Right now it's about 1/3 full but it sometimes needs some extra time to respond. It also freaks out randomly where the video freezes and is unresponsive. ... MoreI caught this on a Cyber Monday sale, so I ended up with a 4 terabyte external SSD for about $200. Close out the window and give it a bit and it's alright, though.I wouldn't buy it at full price, but even for $100 off let alone the $200 discount I got, I'd go for it. Not bad. I'd more give it a 3.5/5. Round up for me.
I was late to the party in discovering that Western Digital, which owns SanDisk, has a real problem on its hands here. One of these two drives failed in about six weeks. And I'm not confident the other won't. It turns out that this is a widespread problem with some folks finding that the drives fail in less than a week. WD has a database on its support page where you input the serial number, and it tells you if the drive had a firmware update that prevents failure. Allegedly, both of mine met that criteria ... and yet one has now failed in six weeks. Further research online shows that the problem is endemic, and has spurred some buyers to sue the company. This is not an acceptable way for a large, successful tech company to handle such a problem. I've contacted WD to see about returning the drives (the first inkling I got that something was wrong came right after the 30 day window to return this product to B&H had closed). My hunch is they'll send a replacement. Nice gesture, but it will do little for my confidence in the product or company.
This is a very very fast external SSD drive. I bought this to replace a G DRIVE external SSD drive that contained a LOT of files. Using the G Drive on my MB Pro had me convinced the G Drive was on its last legs because it took an excessively long time to index and show folder contents (some of which had a TON of files in them). In the process of setting up the San Disk and preparing to reformat it, I stumbled across the news that APFS was the preferred format for SSD drives (not the MacOS Journaled etc). The switch to APFS was mind blowing as far as how fast the drive and its contents were indexed and available to view, browse in Finder. Now the G Drives and this San Disk are BLAZING.
I bought this drive for my daughter, who is an NYU Tisch student studying film editing. This was one of the drives recommended by the professor, and after researching each of them, I selected this one. My daughter has been thrilled with the performance, ease of setup and use, and super compact size and weight. I want to love these drives. They're fast, tiny, silent, and the price is right. But after my first couple months with two of these 4TB's, I would never buy a Sandisk again.I bought them specifically as shuttle drives for video shoots, and have also used them as edit drives with Premiere Pro. Maybe the third time I transferred with them, I had a strange experience where one of them simply unmounted from my laptop (14" MacBook M1 Pro). Didn't think much of it, chalked it up as maybe I jiggled a cable or something. A few weeks later, I came back from lunch and my Premiere project had crashed. Again, didn't think much of it, happens all the time. This week however, the real nightmare happened. Again, didn't think much of it, happens all the time. This week however, the real nightmare happened. Premiere crashed right in the middle of some very time consuming work, and the drive suddenly lost write access. I had to cycle it a few times for it to even come back online. Now having done and excessive amount of research, I see the rumblings on Reddit and elsewhere that these issues are not at all uncommon with these drives, and there's even a lawsuit about people losing their data. There's no way I would trust it with even low priority material after a failure like mine, and to see it so widespread is incredibly disheartening. For context, I'm a full time film editor and do small video projects in my spare time. I immediately formatted both these drives in APFS for working on my Macs, and only ever used the included cables. There is no reason why they should be failing this soon aside from a defect. Now of course I'm passed the return period for Best Buy, so it'll be a good test of the supposed 5 year warranty to see what happens next. I've since moved my project to a Samsung T7 and have had no issues the last few days. Can't give that one a glowing review just yet since it's early days, but it's definitely just as fast and portable, and runs noticeably cooler.Steer clear of these Sandisks and look at other brands.
Was originally super excited to own one of these after a friend showed me how fast this thing is capable of moving files. However, after purchasing one myself I then learned why there are massive recalls and why people urge you NOT to buy one of these.Things were running smoothly for the first few uses. But then suddenly while on a work trip when I obviously NEEDED access to my files, I plugged the drive in as I normally would into my macbook pro and it refused to show up in the finder window. I tried again. And again. And then once more on two different computers just to make sure I wasn't crazy or that my computer wasn't working proper. Nothing. After going into full panic mode, a few hours later I plugged it in again on my same computer and for some random reason it then decided to work again. Fast forward to a week later, the same issue came back.Moral of the story, if you have any plans of using this for work and expecting the ability to just simply access your own files you put on it, be prepared for the drive to decide if it wants to let you do that or not.I write this review as this issue has happened to me once more...and I don't even know the fate of my files / when I'll be able to make use of them again. Being that this is work related, it is REALLY inconvenient. Buying a different company / model of new drive immediately and using this one to skip like a rock across a body of water. At least that'll provide some use.

They wouldno/or could not look up the answer to my basic question as to the minimal operating system (or, whether this Sandisk External Drive was compatible with my laptop w/a 10.14 operating system. I felt most answers were aimed at my purchasing services in-store. Then I called Sandisk (division of WD) + have been holding over 2 hrs!! While waiting I have continued to research an answer on the internet & have found that some users of these Sandisk External drives (especially the 4 TB capacity)- had a disturbing problem of malfunction w/Data Loss, + some problems if use attempted w/Monterey (the manufacturer had promised updates/a solution that has not been forthcoming (I also see that I paid double the current price)... I am very disappointed that Best buy workers would not/could not answer my simple question so I know whether to order other External Drives for my 2012 if this one is not compatible (I need more than one type of backup + want more than one device). After the lack of support- I do not recommend the product; or buying from Best Buy unless one is very computer saavy & will not need tech help. I find it unbelievable that I could not obtain a simple answer from any of the several individuals in multiple departments at Best Buy as to the compatible operating systems for a product they sell.
