The plus is it helps me condense my accessories since it has an ethernet port as well; I won’t need to carry that separate accessory. Just using the HDMI port on the adapter the aluminum housing has a warmness to it. Not hot, but noticeably not cold either. Some things you need to consider: -USB-C port is Power Delivery only (meaning it is only for charging), it cannot be used as a Display Port or Data Transfer. So if you are needing the USB-C port to be more functional, you may need to look for another adapter to meet your needs. Product page states it can handle 60W charging...this would be INPUT. It does not state that, but Thunderbolt 3 spec INPUT is 100W, but OUTPUT is 15W to USB peripherals. So, if your laptop only has 1 USB-C port and it is used for charging, then the Satechi 7-in-1 will allow you to use the USB-C port for charging. -Make sure you have good HDMI cables. Some older ones I had laying around would not work with the USB hub, even though they worked with my HDMI port on the laptop. I have Monoprice 4K cables and they worked just fine. -USB-A ports do not support charging or CD readers, including Apple SuperDrive. We recommend connecting one bus-powered device at a time. That last point is copied directly from the manufacturer product page. So it can be taken as you cannot use a CD reader or charge via USB-A. Also, don’t use more than one bus at a time. I am not too sure about all of that because if you can tell in my pic I have four ports being used and I am not having any issues and the device did not gain much warmth over what I noticed when just using the HDMI port for 3-display setup. Four ports being used: 1. Ethernet 2. USB Flash Drive 3. USB-DVD Writer 4. HDMI Now, I am not outputting anything 4K, and was only moving small folders of ~250MB at a time, while playing the DVD, streaming audio, and typing this in Google Docs. So not sure if Satechi is trying to cover their butts here or what? If indeed they only recommend using one powered bus at a time...HDMI, Ethernet, Micro/SD, USB-A, USB-C...then why buy this 7-in-1. I have used countless hubs in the past that didn’t have these limitations. You’ll have to decide for yourself on how you use your device and maybe their recommendation is based on what type of USB-C port will be supplying the hub. I listed my below, so if yours is less, then maybe it will put more strain on the hub and then run into overheating or reliability issues. The recommendation still makes me scratch my head if this thing can take up to 60W input though...which input and output are not equal, but it still has to be designed to take the heat of 60W input. Again, decide for yourself. I can confirm it won't do data transfer via USB-C, may laptop showed charging via USB-C 65W adapter (tested after taking the pic), but I also could not get it to charge my phone. So it would appear that the USB-C Port on the hub is for INPUT charging only. My setup: -Asus ROG Zephyrus G14: USB-C 3.2 with Power Delivery, DisplayPort, and G-Sync -MonoPrice Slimline HDMI 4K cable -Dual HP 23” 1080p Monitors -LG Slim DVD-Writer -Sandisk Cruzer 8GB USB 2.0 I don’t have any complaints on this device. The aluminum chassis is nice and the Space Gray looks good. It being very slim and streamlined it definitely fits into a bag easily. For cable management I kind of wish the HDMI port was on the other side, just to clean-up the wires and give a little more spacing on the side, but its meant for productivity and it does do that.

One of the biggest issues with modern laptops is the fact that there really isn't enough space for a full range of I/O anymore. This has made products like this multiport adapter all but essential if you're looking to use an Ultrabook as your primary machine, and after spending a week with this particular one I have to say it does a pretty good job. The minimalist design makes this very easy to slip into a bag or pack, and seems sturdy enough to survive rattling around with anything else that might be in there for a prolonged period. Functionality on all the ports seems more than adequate as well. There are a few limits you should probably be aware of. It can't quite match the speed or bandwidth you can get with a native port. Power delivery over USB-C is also limited to a hundred watts. That's enough to handle most productivity focused systems, but isn't going to be able to keep up with the power draw of a dedicated GPU. But these are things to be expected for anything other than a proprietary docking station, and I never found it to be a serious problem as I was using it. I'd recommend this to anyone who's fed up having to constantly swap out dongles on their laptop.

So far I am very happy with the adapter. I have very active children and pets so I preferred this over another device that looked easier to break off due to the design. Each port has worked well with the MacBook. It’s very user friendly since keeping up with all the new tech is a challenge. This adapter fits my needs perfectly. I still prefer a digital camera as opposed to a phone (higher clarity). My son likes to make mini movies stored on a mini as card and it has transferred smoothly so far. I would recommend this adapter to active and clumsy people who want the ease of use and quick and smooth transfers.

Must have for the new generation USB-C laptops

I recently got a new laptop that features USB-C as the only connector on it. This brought up an interesting point and issue to the forefront - I have too many USB-A devices, and barring one monitor, almost all use HDMI or Display Port. How does one connect your new laptop on the go and still keep your sanity? Well, this Satechi USB Type-C Multiport adaptor fits that bill. It has 2 USB-A ports, an HDMI port, a MicroSD and SDXC card reader, an Ethernet port, and the ability to use it to charge another USB-C device up to 60W max. So problem solved? Well not quite. It seems the USB-C port adaptor can only run one hard drive at a time via the USB-A due to power usage, and while it can do 4K on the HDMI, the port bandwidth while using an external hard drive, you do sometimes see artefacts. Beyond that, the USB-C port on the adaptor is kind of useless to me as it’s a charge only port. I appreciate the Gigabit ethernet port on the end, which works rather well. While it’s rare these days to need a gigabit ethernet (especially when wifi is so ubiquitous), the fact that you can plug it into a hard line is handy. So should you get one? YES! While I would have liked the cable to be folded back into the device for easy storage, it is not much of a bother. It is small and compact and you really need one cause those darn pesky USB-A devices are everywhere, and until we get more USB-C devices, we will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

USB 3.0 ports: I’m using one USB port for external SSD connection; I haven’t benchmarked it, but there appears to be no performance penalty because of the port expander. The other USB port has a USB 3.0 hub connected with an array of legacy hardware specific to my employment. It all functions perfectly! Gigabit Ethernet: The speed, stability, and security of a wired network connection can’t be beat, and the Gigabit Ethernet port has been rock-solid. It performs exactly as expected, all day, every day, without issue. For me, the 4K@60Hz HDMI port is the real star of the show. Connected monitors are correctly identified, as are resolution and refresh rate specs. I have tested 4K@60Hz and 1440p@120Hz. Both work perfectly. The main PC display can be duplicated or extended. I still use SD and Micro SD cards at least weekly, and the onboard card readers work exactly as expected. Inserted cards are detected, and I am able to read/write data quickly and efficiently. Overall, I am very happy with the Satechi USB-C Slim 7-in-1 Multiport Adapter with Ethernet. It’s the sort of device that I have the feeling will just blend into my daily work habits and I’ll forget it’s there. For me, that is exactly what my favorite technology is supposed to do: be invisible. Perfect!

Premium Multiport Adapter

This multiport with Ethernet adapter is excellent and contains the ports most frequently used. When I use my laptop at home or work, I use ethernet because I want a fast and more stable network connection. This hub has high throughput, and it was designed this way to connect many devices at once. Surprisingly, I haven't encountered any performance issues when I use this multiport at home, work, and on the go. It is excellent for transport, is small, lightweight, very thin, made of aluminum, and solidly built without any misaligned ports. The build is extremely premium and looks like it will not break very easily, which is good if planning to use it everywhere. The ports are all spread apart to leave enough room to plug thick cables/connectors. The build is extremely premium and looks like it will not break very easily, which is good if planning to use it everywhere. The ports are all spread apart to leave enough room to plug thick cables/connectors. A tiny LED light lights up that lets you know the hub is getting power (in use). The HDMI slot allows up to 4k at 60hz support, and it works as expected. When working at home, I connect my monitor to the hub to extend my laptop display. The USB-C pass-through power (60 watts) feature is great for devices that use type C power cable, and the setup would be to plug the computer power cable into the hub's type C port which the power will go through the hub into the computer. When using the pass-through power, the hub does get warm, but not extremely hot. I have used all of the ports at once and did not notice any decrease in performance. Note that it can handle only one portable hard drive at a time. Overall, the performance of this hub is excellent and contains all of the standard ports you would need to connect to a computer.

Really Useful Device

The USB-C Slim 7-in-1 Multiport Adapter by Satechi is a super handy device. Today’s laptops are so thin that the manufacturers have removed most of the inputs leaving us with no ethernet capability and few USBs. My last two laptops only have a couple of UBS-Type C inputs which require adapters to plug most of my devices in. This is where the 7-in-1 Multiport Adapter saves the day. Here is what you get: 2 USB-A 3.0, 1 USB-C (for charging), 1 4K HDMI output, 1 Gigabyte Ethernet Port, 1 Secure Digital card slot, and 1 Micro SD card slot. All of this is housed in a metal enclosure that measures roughly 5 ¼” by 1 ¼”. The cord measured to the end of the exterior portion of the plug is about 6” long. Why do I need this? All of this is housed in a metal enclosure that measures roughly 5 ¼” by 1 ¼”. The cord measured to the end of the exterior portion of the plug is about 6” long. Why do I need this? This device simplifies several of the adapters you’d have to carry into one device. If you travel much, this is a must have. Using the multiport adapter allows you to plug in your USB-A laptop hard drives, USB drives, and other memory cards using the same device. If you want to export your screen to an external monitor there is a 4K capable HDMI port to use. If you like the consistency of using an ethernet cord instead of connecting to open Wi-Fi, use the gigabyte ethernet port. It is a really useful product. It’s important to understand that this uses the power from your computer to run, so there are limits to powering other devices from it. Also, if I could change two things about the adapter, it would be the length on the cord and the way the ethernet port expands to accommodate the plug. The cord is pretty short, so it leaves the items you are plugging in close to the machine. As for the ethernet port, the end pops up to accommodate the size of the plug. While I had no issues using it, I do wonder if that would ever break. I’m sure that they made it this way to make the adapter smaller. Overall, this device is so useful that I am giving it 5 stars. If you travel much at all, this is a really handy product to take with you.

Slick little travel hub

This is a really nice multi-port, pocket USB-C hub. Since modern laptops have essentially done away with the ports that are, well, essential for many of us these types of adapters have become absolutely crucial. I have owned a couple of different portable USB-C hubs over the last couple of years, and this is by far the most compact one I have for it's capabilities. This is basically a tubular aluminum docking station and it has all of the ports I need to run my laptop as an office computer. I tested this adapter by plugging in a portable SSD, mouse receiver, HDMI output to a 4k monitor, SD card, ethernet connection and laptop power supply. By simply plugging the adapter into my laptop's USB-C port everything just connected and started working right away. I really like the added ethernet port on this adapter as my older one did not have it and I have been using a dedicated USB-C to ethernet adapter as many of my regular tasks require connecting to a wired network. After several hours of testing everything was still working flawlessly. The adapter did get a little warm, but not outrageously or dangerously so, and I was certainly pushing a lot through it! The design is much more compact and with its rounded contours it is clearly intended to be a travel accessory and it's now a staple in the laptop sleeve I usually tote my computer around in. If there is one possible issue I can see it that the ethernet port uses a hinged "jaw" design that swings open and closed when inserting and removing an cable. The obvious intent is to keep the adapter as slim as possible, but it seems like something that could become loose or even broken in time. Lis is less of a concern if one was to use it as permanently installed docking station. The short connection cord makes this a bit difficult and if I were to use it that way I would pick up an extension cable so that I could better position the adapter and all of it's connected pieces a bit further from the laptop. This is less of an issue when using this as an on-the-go device as it is intended, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Versatile Adapter

Satechi - USB Type-C Slim 7-in-1 Multiport Adapter with Ethernet - 4K HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, USB-C PD Charging – Silver The trend in laptops today seems to be towards fewer and fewer connection ports being included. As a result, it’s become almost a given that the buyer of a new laptop will most likely need to purchase an adapter to be able to connect all their devices, especially their legacy devices, such as USB-A external drives. This slim multiport device would seem to be a good option, with seven ports available, including Gigabite Ethernet, HDMI, USB-C with Power Delivery, two USB-A ports, and an SD and micro-SD card reader. This slim multiport device would seem to be a good option, with seven ports available, including Gigabite Ethernet, HDMI, USB-C with Power Delivery, two USB-A ports, and an SD and micro-SD card reader. That should cover most or all the bases for many users. I encountered a couple issues when testing this adapter. First, the Ethernet port is not standard. You need to snap down the bottom portion of the connection opening in order to be able to plug in the Ethernet cable. Nothing wrong with that, but I did have to figure that out on my own, since I couldn’t find any included documentation alerting me to the need to do so. Once plugged in, though, the Ethernet connection worked fine. And there are two lights that indicate when you’re connected via Ethernet, which is a nice touch. Secondly, when I tested the adapter’s HDMI connection by connecting it to my external monitor and Yoga 900, I experienced consistent horizontal flickering on the monitor. I double checked to make sure the cable was fully inserted in the adapter, and then restarted the computer and turned the monitor off and on, but still got the same unwelcome results. However, not being sure if this was a defective adapter port or if there was another issue at play, I decided to try a different brand adapter's HDMI connection. I experienced the same problem with the second adapter connected to the Yoga 900 via its HDMI port, so the older Yoga 900 laptop was the common thread. I only bring this up to alert you that the HDMI port on this adapter may not work with some older computers, such as my Yoga 900, but it worked just fine on my newer computers. Other than the two issues that I listed above, everything else worked as expected. Adapters come in numerous combinations of connections and at various price points. When shopping for an adapter, you should first determine what connections you need now and what you think you may need later, and then choose an adapter that meets ALL those needs. By doing that, you may find that this Slim 7 Multiport Adapter makes sense for you now, even if it costs a bit more, since buying one adapter that meets all your present and expected future needs is certainly a wise choice. Plan now so there are no regrets down the road.

Very good USB-C adapter
7 October 2021

As my house is getting more laptop centric, I needed to find a way to connect and disconnect several peripherals when I'm switching between on-the-go and settling down at a desk. I've used various docking stations for work, but I wanted something more portable and this Satechi Multiport adapter has become my go-to solution. The adapter is about the size of a Fire Stick remote. It has a 6" USB-C cable to connect to your computer. It offers an HDMI port that supports 4K, 2 USB-A ports, a USB-C port that only allows power passthrough, separate micro SD and SD card slots and a drop-jaw gigabit ethernet connection. I've used drop-jaw ethernet connections on my previous HP laptops. Those are spring loaded to shut on their own. I've used drop-jaw ethernet connections on my previous HP laptops. Those are spring loaded to shut on their own. However, the Satechi implementation is not spring loaded, it snaps open or snaps closed manually. I was able to test all of the ports and they all work as expected with two notes. The first is with regard to the USB-C port. It does not provide full USB-C functionality. Instead it allows you to plug in your USB-C power supply to charge your laptop so you don't have to find a second USB-C port on your computer in order to charge it. The second is where I give compliment the Satechi team. When I first received the Multiport adapter, all the ports worked fine except for the ethernet port. The very first connection, it had link lights for a few seconds and then I couldn't get them to come back on, then, to my disappointment, I couldn't get any network activity through the port. I reached out to Satechi and after explaining my test methodology, they confirmed my suspicions and sent me a new adapter very quickly. While it may be disappointing to receive a defective product once in a while, it's how companies handle these situations that earn them loyal customers like myself. They provided fantastic customer service throughout this incident. After receiving the replacement unit, I was able to run through tests on all ports and they all work as expected. So the Satechi Multiport adapter is a solid product backed by a terrific support team.
