I already have the Xodus Ultra and it's been my favorite all-round trail running shoes for some time now. For me, out of over a dozen different trail shoes I have, it has the best combination of weight, comfort, speed, traction, and ruggedness in one shoe. The only thing that could have been improved was a more snug fit in the forefoot/toe-box area and the Xodus Ultra 2 delivers. It's a bit too roomy in that area with the Xodus Ultra and requires me to wear double socks and/or lace down real tightly.I recently got the Peregrine 13 and it's great for speed and grip on technical trails, but I find it a bit snug and narrow in the forefoot area although it's fine for runs of up to 10 miles. The Xodus Ultra 2's fit is right in between the two for me and provides a virtually perfect fit from the forefoot through the heel. It's stable yet nimble and speedy although there are lighter and faster trail shoes out there, including the Peregrine 13.Although this may be subjective, the Xodus Ultra 2 also looks better than the Xodus Ultra. The upper on the XU2 is markedly improved over the XU not only in fit, but also in the looks department and in breathability. It isn't that hot in SoCal yet but it'll get there and I'm sure I'll appreciate the improved breathability when the time comes. From what I can tell, the midsole and outsole look and feel exactly the same as Xodus Ultra, but the improved fit of the upper does make a noticeable difference in the ride. I feel more secure in the runs - especially going downhill and when making sharp turns - and makes me feel I can run faster more effortlessly. I'm very happy with the Xodus Ultra 2 and will look forward to each trail run in it.

I'm rewriting a review after more time in these shoes. I love the fit, comfort, and ride in these shoes. With multiple 6-10hr days running and hiking on rugged mountain terrain, my feet have not felt beat up, yet these still feel not overly-midsoled and are light and nimble enough to tackle technical terrain (the ankle collar is much more comfortable for me than the XU1!). Running in dry Colorado trails, the traction of the outsole gets the job done. However, running in damp Scotland mountain terrain, the traction was a bit of a trainwreck. They felt great on my feet on my 50k race, but I had lots of slipping on damp rocks and grassy hillsides--my friend with Hoka Speedgoat 5s had much less a problem. I think Saucony needs an update on their rubber compound, if not ... MoreI'm rewriting a review after more time in these shoes. I love the fit, comfort, and ride in these shoes. I think Saucony needs an update on their rubber compound, if not just going with Vibram! Also, perhaps the most glaring issue is the upper material ripped after maybe 60miles (Saucony did send a replacement). I would buy again if they updated the upper mesh (like the Peregrine 13?), and rolled out a new outsole compound.

Huge fan of this idea, feels like the perfect mix of the lighter Peregrine and older xodus. That said I've already experienced the bottom sole breaking down very quickly on all three pairs I have owned. I wonder if the streamlined design has come at the cost of durability.I feel this shoe is so close to being the perfect trail runner/hiker in concept. I'd love to slightly better rock guard and much better sole durability. The knobs have worn down much more quickly than past xodus and peregrine and the toe wrap has started peeling.Shoe is very comfortable and stable on the more rocky terrain the trails afforded us out west. Also, can we please get a blacked out version. The colors are cool and all but it'd be nice if the muted offering was always an option.

I started out in the original Xodus Ultra and even though I wasn’t impressed out of the box, in a very short time, I realized I’d found my new favorite trail shoe. After wearing the original for over 500 miles (and still going strong!) I can say undoubtedly that the Xodus was and is my favorite trail running platform to date. In rolls the V2 Xodus. After having such a good experience in the original, I was nervous about the new version. When I put it on I immediately noticed the new ankle collar and lacing pattern. I thought both could be an improvement and after hundreds of miles I would say the ankle collar is definitely an improvement. The lacing pattern really doesn’t make a difference. I will say that it make the shoes harder to switch laces in and I miss having the gator hook that I have on the original but everything else is great. As for durability, these shoes excel! Even the original but the V2 is even more durable. I just finished the No Business 100 where I actually wore the originals for the first 14 miles before switching into the V2 for the remaining 87.Comfort is top notch. Not too much cushion so that you can still feel the trail but enough that after my hundred miler my feet felt ok enough to run again only 3 days later.I can’t say enough good things about these shoes. I now own 5 pair of them and plan on buying more. Give us some more colors and please don’t stop making the Xodus Ultra. I’ve finally found a stable running platform that gives me the confidence to run day after day on unforgiving terrain without fear of overuse injuries or banged up feet. Thanks Saucony, this shoe is a winner!
I tried the first Xodus Ultra last year for long distance trail/mountain running in Colorado. I had to abandon the shoe because the ankle collar rubbed and bruised my ankle bones! The new XU2 has a more comfortable ankle collar for me and so far is a very comfortable and enjoyable shoe for long days on the trail. I have probably 50 or so miles and I’m confident these will perform great in mountainous ultramarathons. The midsole is perfect cushion and my feet felt fresh after 6 hours on tough trails on my last long run. The outsole has felt grippy on plenty of rough and technical terrain, though I’ve noticed a few slips on angled wet rocks but it’s tough to say that wouldn’t occur in other shoes. The outsole has felt grippy on plenty of rough and technical terrain, though I’ve noticed a few slips on angled wet rocks but it’s tough to say that wouldn’t occur in other shoes. The fit/feel is a good balance of room in the toes and snug in the midfoot for just enough precision on technical downhills- I haven’t had any rolls or trips or sloppy footing in these. The comfy stack has felt pretty stable, doesn’t feel like a tippy max cush shoe. My only complaint is that the heel lockdown isn’t seamless for me, I really have to be mindful about my sock choice and crank those laces down- to the point that I worry that some of the eyelets look like they might tear, and then I am left with some long tied laces with no band to hold them in place- and no gaiter attachment ring. But these are things I can live with for the overall feel and performance. This is a great shoe and I look forward to many long mountain runs in these!
Took the XU2 out for 16 straight out of the box (road). The midsole is amazing. Very soft yet not squishy. You definitely get the feel of the PWRRUNPB but slight firmness and support from the firmer PWRRUN. The sock liner… wow. Might be the thickest sock liner I’ve seen but it ads to the unbelievable comfort of the shoe. I’ve read XU2 feels more stable than the rift (full PWRRUNPB) and I can definitely see that being true (I run endorphin speed for road). The upper is pretty thick and warm but gives excellent lockdown. I’ve read some people aren’t happy with the tie box but I find it plenty roomy and Altra and Topo shoes fit my forefoot fine (I’m not too narrow or wide). Mid foot and heel feel plenty secure and compared to V1, V2 feels like it could handle more technical terrain. Like others, I had an issue with V1’s sidewall digging into my ankle at the lateral malleolus. That does not happen with V2.I’m not sold on the lacing system but like I wrote, the shoes feels secure. The laces need to be double-knotted because of the material. Room for improvement here but does not ruin the shoe nor the experience. The outsole showed minimal wear after 16 road miles. I’m sure it will hold up fine with majority trails. I’ve seen some pictures of sidewall rips after lowish mileage but the upper does seem well constructed.I wore an 11 in V1 but had to size up to 11.5 in V2.
Most of my trail running/hiking is here in the PNW. My go to shoe for technical trails with 1000+ feet per mile is usually the Peregrine 12. I came in to REI to check out the Peregrine 13 after hearing it was a little more plush but retained it's technical prowess. I have the V1 of the Exodus and have found stability is not it's strong suit in technical terrain. Super comfortable, but get it in the rocks, roots, and steep decents and it struggled. The P12 is a scalple on terrain like Mailbox Peak's old trail but having some extra cush would be nice.Enter the Exodus 2. I had zero intention of trying another shoe that struggled with PNW technical terrain. I decided to try a pair on and to my surprise Saucony really did improve this shoe. For a shoe that has such a plush ride with the dual foam platform I was shocked how stable it is.V1 Exodus is lower in stack and the sole on the V2 is a bit more firm. Acording to Saucony nothing changed. I have put on the V1 on one foot and the V2 on the other and there is a difference. If I would have listened to the review on the E2 that some of the Exodus magic was lost with the firmer foam I would have not tried on this shoe.I put the P13 on one foot and the Exodus 2 on the other and spent a good amount of time on the test boulder at REI. The new Exodus was more stable and had better lockdown on the downhill. The Exodus was better in every way. Whatever changes Saucony really made to the E2 really, really work. I walked out the door with the Exodus 2 and it has been excellent on the techincal trails. If you were looking for Peregrine with more cush this is the shoe.I was sad to see the Peregrine move in the direction it did. I still love the P12 for short, nimble, speedy ups, and downs where feel is more important than cushion. Now that the P13 lost that feel you would be crazy not to go with the Exodus 2. For the price you get a shoe you can cover any ground in the PNW with better comfort and stability. I think that this is the best trail/hiking shoe that Saucony has made to date. Having several different trail shoes to choose from I find myself using the E2 all the time. The Exodus 2 is a game changer. Great ride, good feel, great stability, and highly versatile.
I purchased this shoe as my daily trainer while I am finishing a 6 month deployment in Somalia. It is to replace my Hoka SG5 which I love, but they have worn down immensely in 4 months and 580 miles. I have done in-depth research on all things running shoes and landed on the Saucony Exodus Ultra 2 to replace my Speedgoats for the remainder of my trip. I am running 3-10 miles a day on loose gravel and hard packed desert ground. On occasion it will rain and everything will flood making it very “soupy” for a few days. The Speed goats lasted roughly 3.5 months which is why I ordered the Sauconys. The shipping took a little over 3 weeks to get here… but I mean it is Africa. The Speed goats lasted roughly 3.5 months which is why I ordered the Sauconys. The shipping took a little over 3 weeks to get here… but I mean it is Africa. I bought the shoes for the reviews I watched on YouTube. Many runners swore by these shoes and they seemed very nice.My first run was a quick two mile around the camp after my morning workout. It had rained the night before and the ground was mushy. First thing I noticed putting the shoes on was how snug the toe box is. I have wide feet, I didn’t see a wide option but many of the reviews mentioned that the toes box wasn’t as tight as other trail shoes. Well this one is definitely tight, I wouldn’t say Solomon speed cross tight (which is one of the most uncomfortable shoes I have ever worn) but it is close. I spent approximately 20 minutes fidgeting with the shoe laces to get them just right. To where my toes had more room but my foot was still secure. Not a great start. Once I got my laces the way I liked them I started my run and instantly noticed how comfortable and plush the run felt. Eaxh stride felt easier than the last and the tread was wonderful! Much better than the hokas (Hoka still has saucony beat for toe box, which is huge to me). After mile 1 I kept feeling like my feet were super cramped in the shoe. Not a huge factor as I just ignored it but I plan on doing a half marathon at the end of the month and will see how it feels as my feet swell. All in all I would recommend these to a friend. Hopefully mine break in well and the toes open up some! Why don’t they make this in a wide? Saucony has a great shoe here a close second to my precious speedgoats.
The X2U is a very good shoe, and the one I'll use from here on out. An obvious extra layer of cushion is nice for long runs--the Peregrine 13 starts to bite at about 11 miles--so I like the extra padding. It is a bit clunky, but for longer runs that's a good trade off. The upper fits snugly, as opposed the the utterly flimsy (why?) Peregrine, and actually mimics the the unfortunately discontinued Mad River. The insole, as with the Peregrine, is garbage (you can do better, Saucony), but can easily be replaced. The Mad River was FAR the best Saucony shoe for midwestern trails (gravel, dirt, grass, hills, rooty woodlands); well built, fun design, more than adequate (actually quite clever) tread, and a dream fit for at least my foot. Snug. No movement at all. But now ... MoreThe X2U is a very good shoe, and the one I'll use from here on out. After 100+ miles, here's my review of the Xodus Ultra 2, going from worst features to best.Grip- Zero out of 5! On wet roots and rock, the grip is awful, downright scary in fact! The most slippery shoe I've ever run in, in moist conditions, by a wide margin. Grip in dry conditions is fine.Breathability- 2/5. This shoe is far less breathable than average. After only an hour of running in hot humid conditions, my feet get so damp I can squeeze water out of my socks! I dont have overly sweaty feet, and have never had this issue before, even after running a warm 50k ultra. Bizarre! Hopefully this won't be an issue in cooler weather. On to the good stuff...Fit- 5/5 Excellent! Saucony's generally fit me well, and this one is super comfy!Durability- 5/5 so far. No noticeable wear to the upper or tread.Midsole- 5/5 Amazing! This is one of nicest midsoles I've ever experienced. Plush and still lively, really fun to run in. This shoe also runs very well on the road, which you're usually going to have a few sections of in an ultra. The rock plate is very good also. It does it's job, without you noticing it's there.Overall- 4/5 This is a very good shoe, with a few glaring flaws. Please Saucony, switch to a much more grippy tread compound, and improve the breathability, (and maybe drop the offset to 4mm) and you will have a true Speedgoat killer!I'm hoping to use these for a 100 miler in the fall. But if conditions are likely to be wet, or unusually warm, I def will choose a different shoe, with a Vibram MegaGrip tread.
