I assumed this drive would be plug and play, so I plugged it in and created a folder to back up on of my computers. While transferring files it kept disconnecting! Then a message came up saying something was wrong with it and I would have to scan it. I was not sure what that meant - how to scan it? I did not see a pop-up window which was behind other windows offering to scan. I did a custom scan with Windows Defender and no issues were found. I got through the first computer by doing several increments of my file transfer, then went to backup the second computer. It too said something was wrong with the device and I would have to scan it. But after clicking on Scan no issues were found and I was able to backup my files on that computer with no problems or disconnects. Now, my hope is that everything is backed up and it will work fine in the future. It's great to have a drive this size that will hold this many files, so I hope so.

I'm not sure if I got a defective hard drive but this was such a huge disappointment. I bought multiple seagate drives before so I'm pretty familiar with setting them up and formatting them. This is the first time where I had a headache because it would not be detected by both my mac or windows computer during the initial setup. I connected this to my Mac first. Saw no detection. I swapped out the cables and tried multiple ports and still got nothing. Then I tried on another mac following the same process and still nothing. I then tried on my pc and saw that the hard drive was listed, but it could not stay detected. Then after trying a different port/cables, the drive became totally undetected. I tried restarting my devices, switching ports and cabling, and even ... MoreI'm not sure if I got a defective hard drive but this was such a huge disappointment. I tried restarting my devices, switching ports and cabling, and even installed Seagate updated drivers to see if MacOS Big Sur isn't compatible. This is such a huge let down because I was relying on this for work. I waited a week and a half with delayed projects just to have it come and blue ball me. This is my least favorite seagate product ever and I will stay away from One Touch models from now on.

Very nice, fast, lightweight, petite hard drive. Plug and play. I though the color would be all around for those that care. The colore is only on top, but not that important to me. It's still nice looking, though I bought it for useability, not aesthetics. I got a red and a blue. I bit more expensive but I trust getting a known, long-time hard drive maker for such an important thing as a backup. It doesn't matter how fast it is or how pretty if you lose your data!
But it's excellent and easy to utilize regardless. I have a Sony Blu Ray that said it could read one as long as it's 2 terabytes or less.. unfortunately that is not working out to be true. They suggest that you use a Sony... go ahead get online and find a new one no one else has ever touched let alone at this price.. I already have another Seagate that it does recognize but it is too large at a mere 6 terabytes. Why Seagate? Because it works on all platforms including ones not mentioned. I am the trifecta mismatcher. Android (Samsung Tier 1 Only), Windows 10 (Evoo) Japanese not a snob, Macintosh iMac, These 3 charmers I use as 1 machine... Seagate is plug & play. In my many decades of electronic entertainment utilization I have had zero malfunctions just tragic accidents of no consequence as there is another perfect cross platform ready to take it's place if necessary. No waiting no support no recovery. I have my own photo shop, movie making, full editing, music composing pocket pc's , desktops, laptops, tablets, every screen from Dick Tracy to 24 feet corner to corner 4320p. All my devices regardless of cost have one thing in common fault free entertainment because of Seagate's Flexibility lennox included... so start a collection be your own cloud never breached of security. Thank you for your time. I'm off to Staples I'd like another Seagate... Have a beautiful fault free day. Good bye.
I bought this so that I could carry large sets of video files from one PC to another. I wanted to use the One Touch so that I didn't have to mess with a hard drive that needed a power supply. When I tried to connect it to the USB port on the front of one PC, the computer never could see the drive, even though the drive light was on. However, I have two Seagate 8TB hard drives connected to the back of that PC, and I was able to unplug one and use its USB cord to connect the One Touch with no issue. The other PC is older, uses Windows 7 and has a USB 3 add-in card, and the One Touch connected up to that with no problem. So in the end, it all works fine and I'm happy with my purchase.
I like it. This 2TB Seagate drive is nice and slim, higher capacity drives are thicker. The USB 3 interface is fast, faster than the drive can actually deliver given its mechanics. If you want faster transfers (and sometimes I do) get an external SSD. If you're going to be rough with your external drive, get an SSD because it has no moving parts. Otherwise, hard drives still have lower cost per terabyte.
I bought to use as external drive/storage of processed images exported from Lightroom. After buying a new FAST computer the read/write speed to transfer data is at a snail's pace. It continually fails the integrity check from Lenovo software. Sometimes while in use, it just quits accepting data. Have ordered a new 4TB SSD and will probably retire this one to the back of my storage cabinet. I would not recommend if you're going to use with photo processing operations. (Note: No where in the description of this product is the read/write speed. My bad for not checking.)
Buying a brand new drive (about twice the size of my five-six year old external harddrive), I was expecting some initial challenges. When I copied files from harddrive to harddrive, I thought the slow performance was just due to the request.Today thought I am trying to back up files which are about the same size I backed up to the old external harddive, but instead of 3-4 hours, it is now in 7 days! Yep, performance has gone BACKWARD! Going to see if I can return the drive because it very, very obvious there is an issue.
This drive is formatted as exFAT for compatability with Mac. exFAT is less able to recover from faults (eg caused by a power failure during while writing) than NTFS. The Seagate website also says that if you reformat as NTFS it will improve performance. However I found that when I reformatted as NTFS the write speed went way down when writing large numbers of small files - 37 Gbytes of photos took 10 hours. At this rate it would take 22 days to fill up the disk. Seagate says it is because I am using Linux rather than Windows and I should take it back to the shop because they do not claim the product works with Linux. But I have used 5 different USB connected hard drives with linux in the past, of various brands, and I have never had this problem before.
