Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM014 1TB - Internal 3.5" Hard Drive

Seagate Barracuda ES is a very stable hard drive. The way it functions is just amazing. From my personal experience, I can tell that the speed and the storage capacity of the hard drive are just enough for me to be enjoying every moment when I use my PC. The fast loading time when I turn on my PC is just more than fabulous. However, even the noise of the hard drive can't disappoint you. Whether you play games or transfer files, the reading and writing speed which the drive offers is just so stable which makes it as quiet as a fan.

5th worst HDD I've bought...

I bought 4 Seagate 8TB "Archive" SMR drives in years previously (these are marketed as shingled [multiple tracks are read/re-written with a slight overlap to gain capacity] but with the knowledge they will be quite a bit slower to write) and I saw fairly terrible performance (USB 2.0 sort of transfer speeds). Having told myself never again, I bought one of these new Barracuda 8TB drives not knowing they are now the same, and have now seen the same sort of poor performance... 20MB/s on average for writing (or backup) operations. A quick research of the 'net shows Seagate have quietly moved this terrible tech into these branded drives now. Deceptive SMR drive! SLOW speeds!!!

I happened to have purchased the same drive, same model a few years ago. Unfortunately, seagate continue to use older models and shove SMR technology in them without mentioning anything unless you go dig in their spec sheet on their website. I feel betrayed and scammed, because if I buy the same model 2 years later, I expect to have to same specs, if not better because new technology is supposed to improve over time, not go backwards. Oh well, I got had and I will NEVER EVER buy seagate again. I guess I'll have to look into a competitor that doesn't engage in deceptive practices in the future. I am VERY disapointed, their drive from 2 years ago was much better and this isn't normal. It's deceptive abusive and really disrespectful to lower the specs of a previously sold model without saying anything about it. The price of this drive should be much lower, this isn't fair that seagate is increasing their margin while not offering a discount for a product much cheaper to produce. I guess if price alone matters, yeah this is a good drive. If you care about longevity and speeds, maybe look somewhere else.

Economical archive storage

I bought the Seagate BarraCuda ST8000DM004 8TB 5400 RPM drive for data archiving. I use it as an external drive in a USB 3.0 connected docking station that I can switch on and off as needed. I leave it turned off when I am not writing to it so my system images and files will never be lost in the case of a catastrophic malware incident. I was quite surprised by the read and write speeds. 250 mb/s read and write with Crystal Disk Mark. When transferring large volume folders from my PC, with varying sized files, it maintained 170 to 190 mb/s transfer speeds. When transferring large volumes of photo and video files it holds at right about 200-210mb/s. What really impressed me was the write speed when making system image backups while booting from Macrium Reflect on a USB stick. I was seeing 400 mb/s write speeds on the meter on the GUI and the time it took to make and verify a very large image tended to make me think that it was real. My experience when opening and reading the files that I transferred to the Seagate BarraCuda ST8000DM004 8TB drive was positive. I felt that the response was very snappy. So for what my purposes were, I was quite impressed. I won't speak to longevity as I will not put many hours on the drive so that doesn't concern me. If you want to write and delete files regularly to this drive it will probably suffer in speed as the overlapping Shingled Magnetic Recording technology that this drive uses will create issues in performance. Google it.

Goes nice with my 860 EVO

So far so good, it was easy to clone my old 2-TB drive and operating system to it. However, it is now my secondary drive because I cloned it to a new 500 gigabyte 860 EVO SDD which is now my primary drive. I named the 860 EVO SDD (Jill) and my Seagate 2TB BarraCuda (Betty) and if for some reason Jill fails to boot Betty will take over.My old 2-T is now a redundant boot and backup drive with two partitions one named Casper with a second partition called Wendy.If Casper boots up something is terribly wrong but as of now I am very pleased with the laptop Seagate 2TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 128MB 2.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive in my desktop computer, which shares the same 3.5" bay with my 860 EVO SDD using the StarTech Dual 2.5" SSD/HDD Mounting Bracket- 3.5" Drive Bay ... MoreSo far so good, it was easy to clone my old 2-TB drive and operating system to it. Good drive, Great price, Not a speed demon

This is, without a doubt, a drive that is a great value choice, assuming you are choosing it for the right reason. It excels at providing a large amount of disk space for archives, backups, and other workloads that are NOT performance sensitive. It is NOT a good choice as a primary drive, or anything write intensive. I bought it for one reason, a local disc to store backups and archives before they are copied to NAS storage. It is installed in a near antique system running a now discontinued 2nd Generation Core I5, installed on a motherboard with a limited number of SATA 600 ports, hence the SATA 300 connection shown in the attached screenshot. That said, it does well at what I bought it for, a source of cheap storage (less than 2 cents per GiB) for processes that run in the background when I'm not using the system. So if you just want lots of cheap storage, give this drive a look. If you want any sort of performance, bite the bullet and get an SSD.

Great Drive, Awesome Support!

Works great so far. I got an external dock to connect this drive to my laptop, and it transfers files just fine. It's fast and it was easy to set up. I didn't really know how to format it, but a quick google search helped with that. Before I bought this drive I had a conversation with someone from support about if the drive would work in an external dock. I don't remember his name, but he was amazing and helped me iron out how it would be done. All in all, and amazing experience and I will definitely be shopping with Seagate again!

Troubled Product

I bought the 2TB Seagate Barracuda Laptop 2.5" drive to update a creaking 1TB that was supplied with my laptop. Having backed up my drive to some off line storage I proceeded to use Acronis to clone my existing system drive to the new drive and create a second partition to use up the remaining space. Unfortunately the Barracuda 2TB drive was not able to complete the process due to multiple CRC read errors on the new drive. I then ran CHKDSK /b to clears the list of bad clusters on the volume and rescan all allocated and free clusters for errors. This also produced too many errors to be able to successfully complete. This is now working extremely well and error free. I have previously bought other drives and RAM with no issue and will continue to do so, especially as all items are warranted for 2 years by CEX.

Very nice

Great product. Went in easy. No issues...My issue, if you're an amateur you'll be lost. A little guide online PDF explaining the process of reinstalling your OS and downloading chipset drivers and other assorted WIFI, graphics and Bluetooth drivers Those are the basics on new rigs. I was completely lost, lucky I have techy friends. Other than that, thing is lighting fast, huge storage, great price. Got to me in 2 business days. Shipping a little steep, ad a USPS option will get that figure down. 👍
