Bought this drive to replace an aging NAS. I didn't need the network connectivity anymore and this was a great value and an excellent drive.A warning to MacOS users, reformat the drive to APFS before using it. I learned that one the hard way. MacOS can struggle with an exFAT partition this size. Just reformat to APFS before using.

Though it's still a bit early in the drive's use I'm impressed with the drive, the speed of it, the 4tb. HDD storage space, the installation, the seller and the seller's customer care re: getting the drive to me prior to the expected delivery date. The price is right, the drive is quiet, aesthetic, compact and seemingly durable. But then again I've only had it for a handful of hours. If anything changes I'll adjust the comments. P.S. I tried to attach a photo of the drive connected to the laptop while I'm writing this but the phone's camera just won't cooperate. # >>>>>>>>>>> 05/27/2021 An update to the overall review (and the other parts of this review). The drive got a little hotter than I preferred when it was slaved out and sitting flat on the desktop. I have a pack of those little, clear glue-on "spacers" so I put one in each of the four corners on the bottom of the drive, raising it off of the desktop about a quarter of an inch rather than leaving it sit wholly on the desktop. The airflow underneath the enclosed drive after I put the spacers on each of the drives corners seems to have cured the heat problem tremendously. There's no fan involved, all's self enclosed in the drive but that little bit of space gained by the spacers seems to have done the trick. It's no longer heating up anything like it did shortly after I received it. I run it anywhere from 4-8 or more hours a day and have not had any problems. I've transferred my non-critical files to the drive and am even storing photos, running some games and accessing STEAM, ORIGIN, UPLAY/UBISOFT and other sites with little or no lag. I'm a fan of this drive. It was a great investment from my point of view. I'll be back another day if anything changes on my end.

I have several Seagate External Drives and I could not be happier. The product is outstanding. I only have one minor request, I wish I would have requested some assistance at the very beginning of using this latest purchase. You have an amazing product and it has helped me so much to keep my designs I use for our church to create beautiful altar linens. I was able to figure out the program of the 8T Seagate Hard Drive mostly on my own. Thank you for having such a wonderful product!!!

I purchased the 12TB model, but received the 16TB model. Although I am happy with this upgrade, I am concerned of potential issues if I needed to file a warranty claim. It works well and benchmarks are decent. This is my offline NAS backup and am happy it was shipped double boxed for improved longevity. More filling between the boxes may have helped reduce impacts during shipping.
I purchased a bunch of these over the past two years and they've been running nearly 24/7 with no issues. Hard drive failures do happen from defects, but this is rare. Far more often heat is the killer. If you do not have an active cooling solution for this drive while writing to it for an extended period of time, then it will either disconnect from your system and require a restart or the drive will fry itself. I highly recommend doing the following before writing any important data onto the drive: 1. Hook up the drive and turn on disk write caching in Windows disk management. 2. Place the drive on its side and point a fan into the bottom vents. 3. Do a FULL format on the drive with the highest allocation unit size. I highly recommend doing the following before writing any important data onto the drive: 1. Hook up the drive and turn on disk write caching in Windows disk management. 2. Place the drive on its side and point a fan into the bottom vents. 3. Do a FULL format on the drive with the highest allocation unit size. If disk write caching is off then your write speeds can plummet to 10 MB/s or worse. The full format will take nearly an entire day to complete, but if the hard drive is defective then there's a good chance it will fail the full format or your subsequent file transfer, in which case you return it and get a new one. Having a fan blowing into the vents while writing to the disk all day is MANDATORY. Make sure the disk is reporting temperatures no higher than 50C or you will have problems. These enclosures used to come with Seagate Archive drives in them, but that changed to Seagate Barracuda Compute drives in the summer of 2017. Both drives use SMR technology rather than traditional PMR, which is why the random write speeds are so awful. The newer Barracuda Compute drives have improved SMR with additional caching that allows them to sustain longer "burst" write speeds to help offset the poor random write performance, but this only lasts a few minutes at best. In short, sequential writes to the drive are nice and speedy (100+ MB/s) provided you have active cooling. Random writes should only be done in short bursts or avoided altogether. The drive is also a good economical choice for mining hard drive based cryptocurrencies like Burstcoin.
I was very disappointed when I received my product because it did not work. First, the external hard drive would not be recognized as plugged in regardless of what USB port I used on my desktop. I tried it on a laptop and it was the same issue. Secondly, the external hard drive itself kept making a beeping noise when it was plugged in and powered on, Overall I had the product for 1 day and did not get to use it at all.
These 18TB's are my second pair of large Seagate Expansion drives. Just bought a pair of 14TB's a few months ago. I've been using Seagate drives...many of them, for many years. A few have failed, but there is no such thing as an immortal hard drive. That's why we back them up!!! Anyway, I've been a Seagate guy for years and until they decide to make crap drives, I'll continue to store my valuable assets on them. One of the reasons I've started to buy such large drives is because of my Panasonic GH6. That lovely camera ONLY shoots minimum 10bit video files...no more 8bit...thus the files have become larger than life in short order.
What I liked about it:This drive is a beast in terms of capacity... 12 TB!!!For an HDD the speed was pretty good. Using the Blackmagic Speed Test it gave me around 230 MB/s on both, read and write.I don't see myself using it for editing videos but definitely for archival. If you are a photographer you can probably use it as your main media drive. What I didn't like so much and ultimately made me remove a star:It comes with a USB-A cable. Everyone is transitioning to USB-C so I had to use an adapter for my Mac.The paperwork points you to a Seagate.com/rescue page that doesn't exist. I'm not sure if it's to download additional software or if it's for the recovery service they offer.Overall I think it's a very good drive if you're looking for a lot of storage ... MoreWhat I liked about it:This drive is a beast in terms of capacity... 12 TB!!!For an HDD the speed was pretty good. This 12TB external hard drive packs a punch in a compact size. Upon connecting it to my PC, it's instantly recognized, and the storage folder pops up, making it a quick plug-and-play experience. While it does need a power supply to function, I appreciate its ability to power through the USB port. What's truly impressive is how quiet it operates and its ability to maintain a cool temperature. With ample storage for multiple devices, this drive easily handles the task at hand. Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed with its performance and reliability.
I have had many Seagate 8TB external HD over the years. They have all work well and consistently performed. About the only complaint is that the form factor have not changed over the years...I would have preferred to have the 8TB external drive shrink in size over time and get rid of the external power supply. I really like the form factor of the Seagate 5TB external drives and it is unfortunate that the 8TB HD size is more than twice that of the 5TB HDs. Why can't Seagate offer a 10 TB ( 2 5TB HDs stacked together form factor) instead of an 8 TB in a much larger form factor ( almost 4 times the size of a single 5TB HD) than two 5TB external HDs? Furthermore, it would be wonderful if Seagate and do away with the external power supply requirement of the 8TB HD as ... MoreI have had many Seagate 8TB external HD over the years. In conclusion, while the 8 TB HD have worked well over the years, it is about time for Seagate to shrink the form factor to the size of 2 TB HD and to get rid of the external power supply.
