The drive got a little hotter than I preferred when it was slaved out and sitting flat on the desktop. I have a pack of those little, clear glue-on "spacers" so I put one in each of the four corners on the bottom of the drive, raising it off of the desktop about a quarter of an inch rather than leaving it sit wholly on the desktop. The airflow underneath the enclosed drive after I put the spacers on each of the drives corners seems to have cured the heat problem tremendously. There's no fan involved, all's self enclosed in the drive but that little bit of space gained by the spacers seems to have done the trick. It's no longer heating up anything like it did shortly after I received it. I run it anywhere from 4-8 or more hours a day and have not had any problems. I've transferred my non-critical files to the drive and am even storing photos, running some games and accessing STEAM, ORIGIN, UPLAY/UBISOFT and other sites with little or no lag. I'm a fan of this drive. It was a great investment from my point of view. I'll be back another day if anything changes on my end.

Great device heaps of storage. Had an issue with my PC not booting with it plugged in but this was due to the format being exFAT by default. Easily fixed by formatting to NTFS or disabling USB boot from BIOS. Ignore the other reviews, no where is this advertised as a USB-C device so why would you give it a negative review. Obviously if you are running a USB 2.0 port it will be slow. And your TV is only compatible with FAT32 which is not the HDDs fault. That is the limitation of your TV and computer. Your hardware is not good enough for the HDD....

My disappointment using my new external hard drive.
20 July 2022

5 years ago, I purchased and used a Seagate External hard drive to supplement my dvr's hard drive to record tv programs. For years I enjoyed viewing at times most convenient for me. A few months ago, the recordings broke up into pieces and the audio was blurred or not heard at all. I suspected the problem arose because I had recorded over the drive numerous times since I started to use it. So, I purchased a new Seagate external hard drive to record the tv programs. To my extreme disappointment, most of the recordings are all broken up like those on my older external hard drive. If there is any way I fix this issue, I would love to hear about it.

With external hard drives, the key issues for a basic user like me are: will it work right away without any hassle, and how fast will it copy files? And then you can think about things like how rugged it is, or how cool it looks. For the first issue, working right away, the Seagate portable is top notch. I plugged in the USB to my older MapBook and was immediately able to see it and start copying files with no issue. For the second issue, of speed, it was more of a mixed bag. Copying around 12GB of data from the laptop through the USB connection took a bit over 10 minutes. However, copying from a different external drive running on Thunderbolt was noticeably slower. If you are running active files from the hard drive, like local streaming of media files, it is probably too slow for consistency.

Regretting this purchase

On the first ps4 the device had cause one of the games to glitch and never allowed to redownload it again stating i don’t have it. Sometimes it doesn’t allow me to play the games i downloaded on the device and it made my ps4 freeze multiple times (this has never happened before). Reliable, fast, and affordable

I have been using eight of these drives for Time Machine backups over the past 2 years and they have worked very well. Unlike other 2TB drives, these drives provide a maximum transfer rate in Time Machine of about 100-120MB/s, which, compared to the slowest of similar drives, is 2x faster. This is with a 2015 MacBook Pro, using the drive on the MBP's USB 3.0 ports, backing up the internal SSD. If you need a 2TB drive purposed as a backup medium, these drives are the best I have found, and of the eight that I have been using over the past 2 years, none have failed. I highly recommend them and have bought a few more very recently.

Lower capacities are variably thinner. Always check the max bay height of the device you are thinking of inserting the HDD into. The HDD can be removed from its plastic casing by gently prising away the top lid which is clipped in. Some of the clips WILL break, but if youre careful, the plastic casing can still be clipped back together again and reused if you need to. Once inside, gently lift up the drive its only slotted in place by 4 silicone screw covers, then slide out and peel off the sticky silver foil on the connector end. Make sure you peel off the foil on both sides of the drive. The USBSATA connector can then be gently pulled off. You will also need to remove the 4 side holding screws to enable you to slot it in and secure it to your new bay location. The end result is that you now have a Seagate Barracuda 4TB drive, exactly the same as you would if you bought a loose bare Seagate drive. The main advantage being that youve just saved about 3050 of the cost compared to buying an identical bare internal 4TB Barracuda HDD on AmazonWhat are the disadvantages Youve likely voided the warranty.BUT, before you shoot off elsewhere thinking the warranty factor is a dealbreaker, consider the following two points1 If youre buying a bare HDD no matter what capacity you should NOT be buying it off of Amazon if its being SOLD or DISPATCHED by Amazon especially those that come without any retail packaging.Hard Disk Drives are sensitive little things and dont take very well to being mishandled or knocked about. Amazon packaging staff DO NOT know how to handle or package Hard Drives this is not some offthewall claim, BELIEVE me, its highly substantiated Despite Amazon having complaints on this subject stretching back over the last 8 years, and despite always promising to correct things, Amazon are still today sending out hard drives in insufficient packaging. The majority of Hard Disk Drive failures that people report and complain about were caused because of how they were handled before they got to you not the manufacturers fault and if youve purchased one thats been handled by Amazon youre playing a gambling game of roulette By the time you receive that drive in your hands, its possibly been rattled around more times than an ice cube inside a cocktail shaker. Is it really any wonder why you see so many 1 and 2 star reviews irrespective of brand2 A lot of bare Hard Disk Drives being sold on Amazon especially those that are competitively priced are actually sold without a manufacturers warranty anyway. They were either imported from somewhere where the Warranty is not valid. If your drive doesnt fail on arrival or shortly afterwards, you will never know this unless you attempt to register it. Or because they are surplus drives that were originally intended for use inside an external enclosure such as these Expansion ones being sold above there are actual reports and reviews that Seagate have informed customers of this fact. And even if your drive does come with a warranty if the drive fails, its only going to cover an exchange. You will need to return the failed drive most likely at your cost and the warranty will not cover any data recovery. Meaning that essentially, once you send it back to get a replacement, you will never be getting the chance again to have your lost data back.My final advice is, be aware of the handling risks in buying HDDs from Amazon. And if doing so, ALWAYS buy RETAIL packaged drives. REJECT EVERYTHING ELSE.If you choose to accept this mission....then, good for you.... This message will not selfdestruct in 10 seconds...

Seagate good quality

Hi, I was looking for Seagates STLH2000400, as it had a USB C connection. No-one, not anywhere had any stock. Not even the competition. Ive had to settle for STKM2000400 which is a USB A only connection. The only difference to me is the connection cable and not using another dongle in between. As I am a Mac user with only USB C connection. As usual the Seagate Drives are well constructed and have access to a 3 year warranty. My family has a few other Seagate HDs for work and back up of photo albums. Never has these drives failed.Thnx

When I decided that I needed another external drive, I went looking for a Seagate that was similar to the one I've been using for the past three or four years. It's even better now than it was before. Development has led to it being smaller, thinner and lighter; it's now smaller than my Galaxy S9+. Performance has been excellent thus far, its speed is more than fast enough for me. Excellent price. Sure, I could have bought it for less online, but it's worth paying a little more knowing that, in the event of any issues, no packaging, shipping and time delays, I can simply walk into Office Works and get it dealt with on the spot. First time using Office Works delivery service. Smooth and fast process, from beginning to end. I highly recommend, both the Seagate drive and Office Works delivery service.
