Others have also noted this. I really wanted to keep this drive exFat so that I can use it to backup my Mac laptop, but it just won't work that way with windows. Not really sure yet if this drive deserves even 4 stars, Time will tell.Oh, one more point. I did contact WD coustomer support. They suggested reformatting to NTFS or turning off Legacy USB Support. Turning off Legacy USB Support would cause my wireless USB Keyboard not to function outside of Windows, so that means I likely would have problems getting back into the bios and also not be able to the command promt. One should be able to get away with that if one has a PS-2 keyboard. I do feel it is a negative for WD if they ship the drive formatted to exFat and don't make it clear that their own software won't function properly in exFat with Windows.I've many WD drives and have always been happy. This is the first time I'm not complete satisfied with a WD product. I like things to just work and not have brain damage trying to get a product to work.

A Really Good Backup Hard Drive

I use this drive to back up all my photos, which, as time goes on and photo files get bigger and bigger with every increase in megapixel resolution, works very well. Moreover, I really like the USB hubs (there are 2), because I have the drive on my desk and the hubs are therefore easily accessible. I actually own three of these drives and I love everyone of them. The oldest is at least a couple of years old and it continues to perform flawlessly. I've had trouble with other brands, but Seagate's products haven't let me down yet.

I had been using the 4TB version of this but it failed after approximately 3 years. It is warranted for only 2 years but still 3 seems a bit short based on my experience with other hard drives. Despite that experience I went ahead and bought the 6TB model to replace it. Unfortunately on day 6 of using it it back thrashing and the data was unreadable and it failed tests (using Seagate Seatools). As it was under warranty I sent it to Seagate and received a replacement drive about 2 weeks after they received the defective unit back. The offered a free data recovery service and it looks like that will be an additional week. The support service was good albeit a bit slow when you are depending on having the drive available. Files increase in size; WD Backup software not supported
8 December 2021

When using WD software to copy files from a WD 4TB My Passport drive to my new WD 6TB My Book drive, some of the files increased substantially in size. Multiple exchanges with WD support were unhelpful. WD support avoided my primary (and repeated) question until their fourth response, when they belatedly admitted that WD Backup software was no longer supported as of January 27, 2021. WD support suggested I use Windows software to back up my files/photos. WD (and B&H) continue to market WD drives to back up important files and create system backups using the included WD Backup software. Beware of the lack of support for WD drives. Because of the software issues, I haven't really used the new 6TB drive.

Good Price vs Size
3 May 2023

I try to buy HD's for about 3 years of life before I fill it up. I figure that after 3 or 4 years, you've put 30,000+ hours into the drive and you have to figure that a failure will be coming soon. So, I tend to only buy a size that's about 2x or 3x of the previous capacity that I'm replacing. Therefore, I end up buying at a lower total capital cost and not wasting cash by buying capacity that I won't need is the coming few years.

Great Storage Solution
9 May 2023

This is a great storage solution for all those excess files and photos etc. It's an ideal back-up disc as has plenty of space even for the most avid amatuer photgrapher to store thousands of pics or hours of video. It's also a nice compact size for a desktop storage device..

Great product at an affordable price
5 February 2023

This product was exactly as advertised. I got the 6TB version. Data transfer speeds were fast. I upgraded to a USB-C to Hard Drive cable; not sure if that increased transfer speeds or not. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

So Far, So Good
2 March 2021

I bought the WD 6TB My Book as a backup for my personal and professional files such as videos and photos. From the reviews, I could see that some people have had bud luck with them failing or not working properly with Mac updates like Big Sur. So far, mine has not had any issues working on a 2017 iMac with Big Sur, but I'm keeping my eyes out for problems. For the price, you really can't beat this as a backup external hard drive. I would highly suggest you keep at least one other backup of your files, and definitely don't use this as your main hard drive for video/photo editing because it will be much slower than drives that use USB-C connections. Like I said, though, the price-per-terabyte is so much better on this hard drive, so it's perfect for backing up old ... MoreI bought the WD 6TB My Book as a backup for my personal and professional files such as videos and photos. Unpredictable At Up First Time

Well I have two MAC computers. A laptop which is High Sierra and a desktop which is El Capitan. On the El Capitan the disk first wouldn't mount, but the software automatically loaded (even though it was for a PC) So I plugged it into my laptop where is showed up, but ope having errors reformatting in MAC Os, even though it was suppose to be MAC ready. I was on the phone with Apple Care for over an hour and then they said to try calling Seagate. I called the next day and something must have gone right through the night and after restarting the computer over and over because it finally showed up when I called Seagate, like when you feel fine after you are at the doctors. WD 6TB My Book
27 February 2019

Was told the drive came with great backup software already installed, Acronis? Turns out the software is NOT on the drive, but there is a way to obtain a free download of that software. The kicker is, that software will not work if youre trying to backup a Seagate external hard drive, which is why a bought the WD My Book. You can obtain a free download of WDs backup software, but it will only automatically backup the Documents folder of the Seagate drive, not the Music or Pictures folders. I should have purchased another Seagate drive to back up my current Seagate drive. The WD works fine, its just not very compatible with the Seagate.
