Almost as fast as the first SSD purchased in 2012!

While I run SSD's for OS's installs, did once install Windows 7 to this HDD & was shocked, much faster than the previous gen (SATA-2, 32MB cache) WD Caviar Black, among my first purchases from Newegg. What a difference a generation makes! And while was a loyal WD fan (still am for their RE4 drives), this Seagate won me over, in fact, one exactly like it shipped with my XPS 8700 in late 2013, have saved 'as is' for now because have an extended warranty that expires in 2017. That's why I chose this model, and while I wasn't looking for a SSD at the time, the Samsung 850 EVO added only $30 to the cost (or the other way around), was a killer deal for a total of $99 plus shipping. Finally, if I had to do it all over again, would still go for this HDD, because compared to the newer version which will eventually supercede it, the reviews are better as a percentage. May purchase another just to have it, when one finds a winner, that's what matters the most. Get one of these while you can, because when gone, will be on the secondary markets, likely used & 2x the cost.

Excellent smaller capacity HDD

I've run this entire line of Seagate drives for years in multiple computers. For the 1TB model I have them in 2 different RAID 0 configs that run very fast and Win 8.1 gives a fast boot time considering the fact that Norton is on them and the RAID 0 is the boot drive. I do this to make my life easier when installing the OS and cloning to a cheap, 7200 RPM 2TB Seagate drive, which works great. The thing I like the most is I've run them non-stop for over 2 years with a very low failure rate (I've had one go bad out of over 20). In general I get writes over 150 MB/s and reads about 170 from the single, and for the RAID 0 I don't know because I have nothing in the system that can push it. In general I get writes over 150 MB/s and reads about 170 from the single, and for the RAID 0 I don't know because I have nothing in the system that can push it. My Corsair Voyager GT runs at its full speed though when moving data back and forth, so when I'm reading from the flash drive, and writing to the RAID, It's maintaining about 200 MB/s when I'm moving a few GB of video. It shows faster when moving less but then buffering is coming into play. Theoretically the GT can give faster, but I don't think that's sustained. I could be wrong. When moving say 1 GB, the speeds show quite a bit faster, such as 250 GB/s. Lastly, they're cool and quiet. I can touch these while the machine is running and they barely feel warm. Same is true for the 2TB versions. Once you get to the 3 & 4 TB drives then they start to feel warm, but not hot and they're still the coolest 7200 RPM drives I've run. Basically I quit buying anything else about 3 years ago because I feel there isn't anything better, and to get faster but maintain reliability with cool and quiet means getting an expensive SSD, since the cheaper ones tend to fail in some way or another after less than 2 years, as compared to these which can run non-stop for years without degrading except for maybe a tiny slowdown, but they stay cool and quiet. So I don't know how to say it any better than that. I recommend these drive and pretty much nothing else because I just wouldn't put my name to any other HDD that I've used. I like buying retail drives because I've had bad luck in the past with bare or OEM drives so I avoid them like the plague. These are good in every way a person typically measures a drive, temp, noise, speed and reliability. They win in every way, maybe not the very best in each metric, but overall.

I bought 4 around 2013 to build an array of RAID5. Now in 2021 I bought another batch of 4 to expand the array. First, it's good that they are still available to match what I already have. I don't think exact model matching is necessary for RAID, but usually there is less trouble to be so. Although bought new, they were still made around 2013. I did a surface test for each drive after receiving, which took about two days because each test ran 5-6 hours. Among the 4 units I received, two were made in Thailand and two China. Both units made in China detected bad sectors while Thailand ones were good. The tool for surface test is DiskGenius, which rates the sector health in a scale from excellent, good, etc. to damaged. The tool for surface test is DiskGenius, which rates the sector health in a scale from excellent, good, etc. to damaged. So a bad drive not only has damaged sectors but also contains many at the severe level. One bad drive even didn't finish the test. When I looked at it, there were physical scratches on the body and PCB. I returned the two bad ones and received replacements. In the mean while, I unplugged disks from the existing array and did a test one by one. It's interesting to see that the 4 drives bought previously were also two from China and two Thailand. They all passed the tests. When I received the replacements, I saw their origin were both from Thailand. Surface test results also indicated that they were on par with the other good drives. My experience is that one should immediately test hard disk drives after purchasing, return or replace those with bad sectors. There is likely a correlation between origin and quality. So far, I received and tested 10 drives, 6 from Thailand and 4 from China. All 6 from Thailand are good, and 50% of the 4 from China had bad sectors, 25% already malfunctioned. Using DiskGenius those good disks have mostly excellent sectors with a small portion in good level, but nothing below good.

It is a Hard Drive.

As a normal PC user who uses hard drives as something needed to just be in place and work as well as other hard drives, and not a massive reviewer for magazines and trade adverts, the Barracuda does its job. It is quiet, it is faster than some of my previous drives (but it is new and hasn't been filled with fragmented data left over from previous use) and I would hope it is going to stay reliable. The questions asked to give a star rating contains the question "Is it reliable" How can a new user be expected to answer that when it is only a couple of months old?Perhaps I will re-evaluate the four star rating in a year or two when the question of reliability can be assessed. FOLLOW UP INFORMATION This HDD lasted untilOctober 2020, just over 3 years use as the main drive on a PC that is on and used 16+ hours every day. That is over 20400 hours of use. Is that reliable? I would say it is and add that it is one of the best so far to be on for that many hours. Most of my previous drives have never made it past 2 years before they started to give me trouble. I still use Barracuda drives as backup drives andfor major storage of photos and books but my new Portus Digital All-in-one uses SSD's so I don't think I will be buying so many discs in future.

I've bought 30-40 of these hard drives for computer builds because they were reliable, but also because Seagate DiscWizard transfer software (free for use if one drive is a Seagate) was easy to use and dependable to copy my standard hard drive load to an empty drive. In the last year it appears that either updates to Seagate DiscWizard or Windows 10 was making it impossible to copy my standard computer build load onto these or any other drives. I've tried a couple of other than Seagate drive brands and had issues with them too, so the problem may be Windows and not Seagate DiscWizard or Seagate drives. I've also tried other transfer software and had similar issues. Too bad, because I love building desktops but these issues have caused me to stop. Whatever happened ... MoreI've bought 30-40 of these hard drives for computer builds because they were reliable, but also because Seagate DiscWizard transfer software (free for use if one drive is a Seagate) was easy to use and dependable to copy my standard hard drive load to an empty drive. Whatever happened to "user-friendly" software and hardware. Too many "bells and whistles" that most of us don't want or need now complicate our lives, our computers, our automobiles, our cell phones, our home appliances, etc.

Poor quality and unreliable

Poor quality and unreliable. It seemed okay for the first few weeks however, it started slowing down and spinning back up when data was being read from it, resulting in it being very slow. When video was being played from the drive it was most noticeable. The video would freeze and the drive could be heard clicking and spinning up randomly. It currently has around 800 hours on it and is progressively getting worse. I will be replacing it with an SSD soon which I wish I did in the first place.

Shakespeare once said ....

..... you can never have too much of a good thing. And with PCs you can never have too much storage. The first PC I ever owned was the seminal Amstrad 1512, with a mighty 512kb of RAM, the bonus if a 20mb hard drive & a floppy disc drive - and, trust me, the 5.25" discs were floppy - all of which was pretty good going back then.I've recently bought myself a new PC with a 512gb SSD & 12gb of RAM, which demonstrates how far we've come. But once I looked at my gaming needs, my music library & my graphic design work it was obvious I'd need more storageThe SSD is superb, fast & quiet, but they're still pricy so weren't an option for my upgrade. It was a doddle to install & split into several partitions .... mind you, I have done this before!!All in all I'm delighted with my purchase. Now, how quickly CAN I fill up 2tb?
