Sennheiser HD 660 S Open Back Headphones
The HD 660 S features a new transducer design developed by Sennheiser. This results in improved control of the diaphragm movements thanks to a specially manufactured precision stainless steel fabric, which is adapted to the contour of the diaphragm. Extremely light aluminum voice coils ensure the highest impulse fidelity. The transducers are carefully selected and paired by hand to ensure consistently narrow (±1 dB) tolerances. The HD 660 S has been created to enjoy music in supreme quality and from many different audio sources. Thanks to its low impedance it also offers reference-class fidelity with hi-res mobile players. Naturally, the HD 660 S reveals its full potential when it is connected to the balanced outputs of a dedicated headphone amplifier such as the HDV 820 or to the balanced output of a mobile digital audio player. Accordingly, it comes with a choice of cables for just about any occasion. All cables are made of highly conductive OFC copper, featuring very low handling noise and sturdy para-aramid reinforcement. Everything about the HD 660 S makes listening a pure pleasure - not least its strong yet lightweight open construction. The elliptical ear cups are shaped to follow the anatomy of the ear, while thick padding on the headband and the replaceable ear cushions guarantee hours and hours of listening in supreme comfort.

It's been 14 years since the HD 650 was released, so this line was due for an update. Surely, any successor to the legendary 600/650 was bound to be met with much scrutiny, and I was skeptical given my reference headphones were the HD600 for years. In my opinion, the 660 S is a worthy successor to the 600 in particular. Most reviews have stated that it was supposed to be an updated 650, but here's why it is not:1) It has much more treble energy and sparkle than the 650.2) It is leaner in the bass, but much quicker and more nimble3) Midrange is not as laid back, very transparent, also not as forward as the 600The result of all of these is that its sound more resembles the neutral 600. However, the 660 S does not have the same laid back and relaxed character used to describe the 600/650. Some complained about a veil on the older models which is not present here. The result of using drivers derived from the HD 700 is a more resolving and lively headphone with much improved transient response, while maintaining the tonality of the HD6x0 headphones.Build is basically the same as the older models. They say the pads are slightly different but I haven't noticed a difference.I'd recommend this headphone to anyone who loves the tonality of Sennheiser's HD6x0 line but would like a quicker and more lively presentation to their music. If you prefer smoothness and richness, I'd suggest sticking with either the 600 or 650, with the added benefit of them being much less expensive.

I used to be a die-hard HD650 fan before buying these headphones. I found the HD660S to be a great improvement and overall upgrade. The bass is tighter and more controlled. The mids are very cohesive and detailed. The highs are definitely more present, which should be considered if you are treble sensitive. I don't find them to be harsh or sibilant at all. The sound stage is noticeably wider and the imaging is more precise than my older HD650.The HD660S is also far less demanding in terms of amping. They sound great on every headphone jack I've tried them on so far, but the truly shine with a dedicated DAC & amp.I can listen to these for hours with music and games without discomfort or fatigue thanks to the thicker/deeper earpads compared to the HD650.I highly ... MoreI used to be a die-hard HD650 fan before buying these headphones. No complaints about sound and comfort but cables are among the worst I've seen. Cheap rubber cable that are likely to break in the spot marked on the picture (my lasted ~1.5years). For the price I really expected something better.Sennheiser also doesn't send replacements:> Thanks for your request. Unfortunately due to the worldwide situation, we don't have this cable on stock for some time to comewas the response given by their customer support with a link to Amazon for another cable that was also out of stock. They are clearly not interested in replacing cables even under warranty.Strongly recommend avoiding Sennheiser based on my experiences.

I have a lot of cans for a variety of different applications, and over the years have had many more.I bought these as, being a parent of two, my greatest opportunity to listen is at night and I was wanting a high quality can that could be a late night substitute for my Hi-Fi.They have not disappointed! They image superbly, have a stunning midrange quality and paint a beautiful picture of whatever I'm listening to.I did see some complaints about clamping force, but I have not noticed anything myself, I actually find them to be very comfortable, even over extended periods.Well worth a demo if you're looking at a new set.
I've been giving these a thrash with Tidal and Qobuz. I'm a metal fan at heart, but these phones have made me branch out a bit. I purchased a SMSL m500 dac to get the best out of them on my desktop. I listen every night, i'm hooked. They perform well on my phone also. They sound fine on cd quality tracks too. Havn't been able to test them on balanced audio yet. If your after a set of cans with excessive bass I don't recommend them, maybe go for some Sony's. But the mid range and highs are great. You can hear each individual instrument when the recording is well produced. They are comfortable to wear even though they are tight. I can listen for hours without discomfort.
The HD660S is Sennheiser's follow-up to the HD650, which I own the special edition of (the HD6xx). Let's be honest: These aren't headphones for people who want pulsing bass beats or a silent retreat. Open-back headphones let in all outside noise, so if you're looking for headphones for work, look elsewhere. If you're looking for rich, warm sound, these are a great balanced set of headphones that are exceedingly comfortable. The HD600 series is known for being a bit tight, but I found that (a) they loosen up as the earpads break in, and (b) you can CAREFULLY bend the metal parts of the frame to resize it for a larger head (like mine).Don't be put off by the price--you're paying the same price for Beats but getting much better headphones for what you pay because the ... MoreThe HD660S is Sennheiser's follow-up to the HD650, which I own the special edition of (the HD6xx). Best sound quality for the price I'm willing to pay.Pros: High-end sound, even sound signature (though I'm biased against high frequencies because of hearing damage).Cons: High impedance--expect to crank your phone volume and not get much output. Better for home use. Not for use with low-bitrate MP3s (don't touch lower than a Premium streaming service or 320 kbps rips).
Sennheiser makes THE Best Headphones in the world, Literally! Their Highest End Headphones, the HE 1, Orpheus, which sell for $59,000 USD. 2nd Tier, HD 820 for $1,800 USD, 3rd Tier, HD 660S which I bought for $499 USD. All great headphones, ALL three of these are Studio Quality. These are the ONLY Headphones my friends in the Recording Business use.
Excellent headphone. Attenuate a couple of treble bumps and boost subbass a pinch and it is an HD600 killer and superb monitoring/mixing/mastering headphone. Superb entry-level high-end can for casual listening, too, with that warm, thick, finely nuanced, and organic Sennheiser house sound. If you want more resolution than HD600 but none of HD650's character, this baby should do it for you. Aside from that, comfort is supreme. The build quality doesn't seem up to par with HD650, though, but still better than most cheaper headphones. Placement of sounds is sharper and clearer than HD650 and HD600, though not by much. This is no K702 and HD800 killer, however. It's high impedance demands you have at least a Schiit stack for best results, or you are better off with ... MoreExcellent headphone. This is no K702 and HD800 killer, however. It's high impedance demands you have at least a Schiit stack for best results, or you are better off with cheaper, low-impedance headphones like K612 and HD598. If you love the Sennheiser sound but want a brighter tuning, this may be it for you. A potential alternative may be DT1990 if you don't like this headphone. If you found the Beyerdynamic or K701/K702 too bright for you, HD660S is not as bright, so this may be the alternative that will work for you as it is not overly bright. Another reviewer calls this entry-level, I consider HD600 the cut-off point where high-end starts and the "law of diminishing returns" starts kicking you in the leg. It costs more and more money to gain noticeable boosts in overall sound quality and resolution after HD600, for the most part. And then to get your money's worth out of such purchases, you also have to upgrade your playback system more and more, or you are better off with cheaper choices as I mentioned. K612 will kill an underpowered HD660S or HD600 easily, making them seem like wastes of money.
Just got these headphones yesterday. Sonic bliss! I have an elaborate home theater with electronic gear and speakers worth 100X the cost of the headphones. Are the Sennheiser headphones as good? Well no but that they are mighty close. While intimate I do not think headphones can match the soundstage of a properly designed home theater which is as close to live music as I have come -- nothing matches that. It is also hard for headphones to match the base of good subwoofers. However in terms of sound bang for the buck this was the best investment in high end equipment I have made. After much research my choices came down the Sennheiser 660 S vs the Focal Clear Professional. These phones are a third the price and lighter weight. Despite the comment above about the theater I am skeptical about ever chasing sonic perfection. I listen entirely to classical music and have tested this set with Bel Canto opera chamber music solo piano symphonic music concertos Bach ***** and from baroque to modern. Excellent truly musical sound with excellent detail and soundstage. The folks at Moon Audio are also great to work with.
They sound much better than my ancient HD560 Ovation ii. More bass and a warmer sound. Not quite as open as my HD800 but are easier to drive with the HiBy portable player. The fit is firmer than either of the older two. Not uncomfortable but no worries about falling off your head either. The HD800s are much looser and heavier. No regrets!
