I bought this 6 days ago and I can say that it hasn’t let me down. I have had 3 shimano sedonas all in 4000 reel size and I just bought a 5000 size. This reel series is amazing for anglers who want something that can withstand a fight from a huge fish and still have a light weight rod and reel combo that you can carry around all day without carrying around something huge and bulky. This reel I bought is paired up with a St. Croix Triumph 7 foot medium heavy rod. This setup is a champion and gets it done every fish I have caught so far.

I use this reel for trout fishing. It does the job. The drag is good enough to handle that type of fish. I don't think it is a good option for stuff like big bass. The reel is heavy and bulky in the general sense. As a long time fisher, I don't recommend this for bass or stripers. For trout and panfish, it's okay. I'd still prefer something a little better like the feel of the Daiwa Regal. This one feels plastic-like and cheap. I know it will last a fairly long time. I just hate the feel. As for parts, they should at least give you a ceramic bail arm instead of that black plastic, and they can give you a better engagement system when you go to reel the handle. The reel is solid, it's just that the feel is not there and the material is not there....the performance ... MoreI use this reel for trout fishing. It does the job. I love this little reel.I intended to purchase a different reel than this one. I had been using the other reel for about a year and I feel on it during a stream walk and damaged it. I had every intent of purchasing the same reel again- it was out of stock. So after research I picked this one up.It has been excellent- now mind you I have a small size and it is on a perch rod with 5lb mono for the winter. So I am not planning on reeling in any 20lb rockfish or anything. But I have had a 15 in on it and it performed flawlessly. The reel has a great weight to it. It casts with ease and is very split. Many small reels have a loose feel to them. Mine is just as solid as my larger reels. The bail is tight and unlike one of my other expensive reels has never flipped ... Been a longtime user of Penn reels but have switched over to Shimano because Penn is made in China and will NOT last, just like all my Penn reels lately. Not wasting anymore time and money replacing parts. Going Shimano now which is NOT made in China and built to last. This Shimano Sahara reel is smooth and works like a high quality reel. Can't go wrong with Japanese or German engineering.
This has less drag than the 4000 but carries more line so its a trade off. Paired this with a 12ft raider surf rod and worked very well off the beach for salmon this year 2022. It was good fun being on light gear setup and hooking up the salmon with this and 20lb braid. Smoother than the cheaper reels but not as smooth as you would expect, it was a good upgrade and bigger reel for the intended purpose.
I bought this because I needed a reel with a high gear ratio. And the Shimano Sedona delivers! The only negative is that the handle knob can't be changed. The current knob is a bit small for man hands. I have a bigger knob ready to go but the small knob won't come off no matter how I manipulate it.
I have used other reels but this is my preferred saltwater inshore reel. I use 10 pound Braided line with a mono leader and catch large redfish, trout, sheepshead, tripletail, grunts, sea bass and others with no problem. I have even caught 30 pound black drum with this set up. Smooth, light, durable and affordable reel that I highly recommend.
Got this reel a few weeks ago and following a lot of daily use it has been just average. Nothing special. It's fairly smooth but not as smooth as others I've tried. The drag has a nice click to it, and it feels fairly solid in use. But that's about it.Unfortunately, two things affect my rating. One, the lack of reverse -- I wish I had looked closer before buying it, as the lack of this feature simply makes it harder for me to use. I would've picked a different reel simply to have reverse. The other is the bail arm doesn't always close automatically when winding after a cast. This can be frustrating and can make you lose focus, resulting in missed hookups.Overall, this Shimano is simply average. I think for the money I would've been better off with a Daiwa ... I bought this reel with a cabelas rod combo. From day one, it has grinding sound. Anyway I kept it and used it for more than three years. The cast distance is relatively short regardless what line I used. The bale is not user friendly at all. My other cheaper reels work better than this Sedona.
I was a loyal Pflueger customer, but my last two President XT's I bought this year turned out to be nowhere near what they used to be. I went to Cabelas on a whim and saw this reel and the smoothness was so impressive, I bought it. After using it for just one day, I can say that I will be back for at least one more. Very happy and impressed.

The Sedona FI series includes models for everything from light freshwater to heavier offshore species thanks to improved drag power and increased gear ratios. The 8000 model incorporates Shimano’s tougher Cross Carbon Drag to withstand rigorous pressure when battling large game fish. The Sedona FI’s enhanced spool design features Shimano’s Propulsion Line Management System for increased casting distance. The G-Free body shifts the reel’s center of gravity closer to the rod, translating to less fatigue during long days on the water as well as enhanced casting or jigging comfort.
