A genuine Shimano derailleur for less than ÂŁ10. I purchased this to replace the one that broke on my old mountain bike. Being identical to the original one, this new one was easy to fit to the bike and just needed indexing to make it work. Delivery was very fast. I have since bought another one from Sports and Leisure to keep as a spare.

Big motors severely limit space . Only just space for 6speed. This Deraileur hangs low. The pivot point is below the mounting point. Bad for grass .and prone to bending the mount point on the bike frame. But good for big rear sprocket or stupidly big motors. And when the pivot gets a little sloppy there's less chance of it fouling the wheel. I did have to grind a little bit off the ends of the pulley sprocket bolts. To get clearance to get up to 1st gear. Standard Installing and adjusting is is super easy . I'm used to working with knackered components. Bnib stuff is nicely predictable. Not much going on in the fancy materials department .you can tell if it's in its box or not . I could have paid 1/3 of the price for a mystery branded one that looked more stylish, but I wanted it in my hand quickly without any suprises . If I'd known I would have needed one I would have pre ordered the stylish mystery brand. But I turned out that all my spare ones were on the verge of doing the Shimano special wobble so much that that only stay on half the gears and threaten to jump through the spokes if not replaced soon.

Not the product advertised

Ordered this product to compare against the same product ordered directly from Shimano. Looking at it in pictures, it looks like the same product, but it is not the same as what was ordered from Shimano. The screws on this product were different. The type font of the Shimano Logo was a little different. The spring that allows shifting between gears was thinner and did not have as much tension. Comparing this product to the actual product from Shimano shows it is not the same. Installing it on the bike, it also did not shift under load properly, unlike when I installed the actual product from Shimano. I do not recommend. It is cheap, but it doesn't work. In addition, it was not packed properly. The box arrived damaged, because there wasn't enough bubble wrap inside ... MoreOrdered this product to compare against the same product ordered directly from Shimano. Original product, works as expected

The product shipped in theo riginal box, and was packaged well. The derailleur itself though, it's very basic.1. The build quality is great, all metal construction, the adjustment screws are labeled and easily reachable. The cage is of medium length, works well enough with the Shimano 7 speed freewheel and trigger shifters.2. The jockey wheels don't seem to be replaceable, which is a shame.3. The pinch bolt is a nut and bolt, instead of being a hex bolt. Hex bolt would've been much better, as it is something much more prevalent on a bike.4. The derailleur itself is pretty cheap, which is great. It works well enough to justify the price

Shimano Tourney RD-TY300 Rear Derailleur 6 7 Speed
22 January 2017

This RD-TY300 is well made and looks fantastic and was dispatched very quickly. But despite all the information that shows this Derailleur will suit a six speed with a 34 tooth drive cog, I could not get it to work on my bike. The top guide pulley barley cleared the 24 tooth cog of my Freewheel and had no chance of shifting the chain to the 34 tooth. This was even after adjusting the 'B' screw and altering the chain length (to change the tension on the Derailleur arm springs). Changing the top guide pulley from the supplied 13 tooth to a smaller 10 tooth almost did the job, but the Derailleur still couldn’t shift the chain. It seems to need a longer claw mounting bracket to get the top pulley down into the correct position. An old Shimano RD-TY18 Rear Derailleur, which all the information I have tells me is not compatible with the six speed MegaRange Freewheel, actually works perfectly. The RD-TY18 has a Claw type hanger almost twice the length of the hanger on the RD-TY300. I’m not sorry for purchasing this Derailleur, at $19.00 it didn’t break the Bank, and I’m sure it will work well on another bike with a different dropout angle . Oh the joy of trying to fit modern products onto old machines.

Surprising reliability and shift quality at a bargain price

In all honesty, I used to ride with nothing but higher-end Shimano Deore, LX, and XT parts back in the day, and I can say with 100% honesty that if all you do is city riding, and as long as you take good care of your bike and keep it properly tuned (as you should with any bike, regardless of the quality of components it has on it), these Tourney derailleurs are excellent. If you are not fanatical about saving those last several grams on your bike, and can give up a couple gears, Tourney derailleurs work flawlessly. As mentioned, I used to ride more expensive bikes with higher-end componentry, but due to lean times financially (as well as a switch in the type of riding I do, and therefor the style of bike I ride), I was forced to make the switch to a lower priced ... MoreIn all honesty, I used to ride with nothing but higher-end Shimano Deore, LX, and XT parts back in the day, and I can say with 100% honesty that if all you do is city riding, and as long as you take good care of your bike and keep it properly tuned (as you should with any bike, regardless of the quality of components it has on it), these Tourney derailleurs are excellent. Since then, I have had two bikes with Tourney rear derailleurs on them (including the latest iteration), and both have fully exceeded expectations. In fact, they have actually surprised me with their durability and shift quality. What I have learned over the years of using these derailleurs is that low price does not equal "inferior" durability or shifting performance. Not in the slightest. Of note: the plastic idler gear on these was a cause for concern for me with the first Tourney rear derailleur I had on a bike, but regardless of that, they have proven to be very durable over time, and that's with plenty of mileage (roughly 3,000-5,000 kilometers per year), and tons of sand and other grime I pick up along the bike path along the beach, as well as along other non-paved paths around the city. In fact, I have worn out entire metal drive trains WAY before the plastic gears on these derailleurs begin to wear out (this is because the idler gears don't take any pedaling torque from the chain), so have no fear whatsoever. Just keep the chain lubed (I prefer dry lube), clean them when necessary, and keep them adjusted properly (again, as you should with any derailleur), and they just "go".These derailleurs last, they shift well, and they hold their adjustment perfectly. For city riding, I've never been done wrong by Tourney derailleurs. The only reason I didn't give these a 5-star rating is because they are heavier than higher-end derailleurs (only by a few ounces), and they aren't meant for off-road duty. But again, if all you do is city riding, you won't be disappointed. Buy with confidence. :)
