Awesome for XC and gravel

I’ve tried a lot of shoes but many are too narrow for my wide feet. These shoes fit perfectly (correct size) and are very light, stiff, and still comfortable to walk in. I mainly use them for gravel w/ Shimano M520 pedals but I’ve also run them on my MTB with M8180 XT pedals. I wouldn’t recommend them for enduro riding since the toe protection and walkabilty are not on par with MTB gravity shoes, but for gravel and XC I don’t think you can do better at this price point. Also easy to clean!

BoA plastic in bad spot for wide feet

I'm coming from a set of Shimano R088s size 46 that my feet got a little too "fat" for. Bought these shoes and a size up (47) based on the guidelines of Shimano's website. The length is a huge difference, but they fit fine while testing them around the house. So I mount them, and try to get some time in on the bike. The wide plastic piece the BoA string goes through was the worst idea possible. Unlike the rest of the shoe thats a soft material that wraps around your foot, that plastic piece will dig into the side of your foot. I cant get more than 10 minutes of biking while its on the trainer without that pieces making it feel like there is a quarter in my shoe sticking in my foot. I wish I could have given these shoes a different rating because they look great, and ... MoreI'm coming from a set of Shimano R088s size 46 that my feet got a little too "fat" for. Strap them down, and start peddling, no thank you!

Excellent shoes.
4 February 2023

After reading lots of various reviews and struggling to find anything available in my size I came across these, they fit really nicely and are not to slim like some "race" shoes. After a couple of rides the upper has a little more give on them as I start to break them in, the sole is great for walking in and certainly stiff enough when I want to power up a hill. The tread is good for off road sections and they look like road shoes. Service from sigma was excellent as usual.

Very good shoes for the money. I've had Shimano shoes before and they've lasted a long time. The fit is snug on the feet but this is what you want really. Very comfortable so far on long rides. BOA system works well, with the only disadvantage that you can't loosen off slightly, you have to full undo and then retighten. But other that works perfectly.

Great shoe (after I found my fit)
23 March 2023

It took three pairs of these shoes to finally find the right fit. Based on my experience, I recommend sizing-up, especially if you are in-between the available sizes.I have had great luck with other brands, especially Giro, but I wanted to try something new. This is my first pair of shoes with a BOA system and I'm pleased with the results. The build quality, comfort and style are spot-on as well. The price was right as well. I have about 300 miles on them at this point, 10k+ feet of climb... so far, so good.Long-winded, additional details: As for fit, I generally wear a 43.5 in a regular width for most cycling applications. Upon occasion 43.5 can be ever-so-slightly too big, so I tend to tighten the buckles/straps/laces close to the maximum or simply size down ... MoreIt took three pairs of these shoes to finally find the right fit. The Shimano XC502 shoes barely slipped on to my foot in a 43. Given the impossibly snug fit of the 43, I foolishly ordered the 44 high volume shoe. The HV space was way too loose. Ultimately, sizing-up to the 44 worked. The best aspect of this purchase/return/purchase/return/purchase saga was working with Competitive Cyclist and their "gearheads." They made the entire process as easy as possible and I appreciate it.

Lightweight+Comfortable

Paid just over $100 for these which seems like a fantastic value. I'm an occasional gravel rider and needed to replace my 10 year old entry level pair of pearl izumi's, which were falling apart beyond what gorilla glue could repair. I'm used to the boa adjuster as my road shoes are Shimano rc7's. I didn't find these at all uncomfortable and was surprised how lightweight these were compared to my old off-road shoes. My US shoe size is mens 12.5. I ordered the 48 which was actually a smidge too big, I'm sure the 47 would have been fine. Either way I didn't find anything about these shoes to be uncomfortable, small running, or too narrow.

Sizing is strange
8 June 2023

The 46 wide is not wide enough. For comparison, a Sidi Dominator 46 mega (wide) fits perfectly with a thin OTC orthotic and a wool sock. The length of the shimano shoes is a little shorter in comparison, and the shape of the shoe cuts across my toes, and it is nowhere near as wide. I typically don’t need wide shoes (dress shoes, hiking shoes, running shoes, etc., are all regular width), but cycling shoes tend to be cut very narrow so the wider versions work better.. Cycling shoes should be snug, but with enough room to wiggle your toes, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for “hot foot” and other issues.

They're a little narrow but they will be OK
24 March 2023

I have VERY wide feet (4E). These are BARELY wide enough. I did compare them to my previous Shimano shoes (wide) and these SH-XC502-WIDE are definitely narrower than my previous shoes. Come on Shimano, what are you doing?! I believe they will stretch a little with use, but time will tell. Other than that, I really like the boa setup and the fit around the ankle. The shoe does feel fairly comfortable other than a little narrow for my feet. I haven't gone on any decent rides yet (I'm still waiting for things to dry up in my area after the spring thaw) so, I haven't been able to assess their comfort on long rides.

Very Uncomfortable - Cannot Wear
5 June 2023

I am humbled and amazed at the level of complete discomfort and even pain wearing these shoes. The fit is correct its just that the uppers are SO stiff, by the end of a 1:30 to 2 hour ride, my feet are screaming. I'm going to have to go back to my 3-4 year old Sidi's until I'm able to afford another pair - of Sidi's. I don't like writing bad reviews but I can easily say that over the 35+ years I've been cycling, I don't remember ever coming across a shoe so uncomfortable. I guess that's the difference between a $160 shoe an a $260 shoe.
