Best looking game on Switch. Great and smart monster catching and breeding & battle system. There are tiny hiccups with performance but it never interrupted me ever because I was so immersed in the beautifully rendered environment. I can’t even tell if it’s 30hz or 60hz when traversing because it’s so smooth and satisfying. Some people say story needs more buildup for the characters but I don’t find any issues with the writing. Pro: - best turned based battle system ever - various and animated monsters to catch - engaging and mature stories - smooth performance - gorgeous visuals - dozens of hours of gameplay Con: - none. Arrived earlier than anticipated. SMTV is a challenging, more mechanics-based JRPG that fans coming over from the Persona series will feel, fundamentally, right at home with. While as of writing there has been less narrative than expected, the game is beautiful even when played on Switch Lite and runs well. Gameplay-wise, bosses are expected to be tough, though random encounters with enemies can also prove to be worthy obstacles in their own right and demand your attention and concentration especially when moving into new territory. Proper planning and understanding of stats, strengths, and weaknesses are crucial.A difficult and methodical experience that I am overall delighted with.

I can't help but express the sense of scale this game gives already. Areas are really fleshed out. The combat system is vastly improved upon compared to past games in the series as well, with the key difference of course being the Nahobino's abilities and the Realm of Shadows; which really adds an extra level of strategy that keeps battles fresh. If you're looking for a dungeon crawler that gives a challenge from the start, this is the one for you. No awkward difficulty scaling like I've had with some other RPGs I have played. The dub so far is really solid as well, and the music is phenomenal. Atlus did a great job on it. Graphics-wise as far as switch games go, this is the best I've seen.Physical game aside, the Collector's Edition's extras were worth for me. ... MoreI can't help but express the sense of scale this game gives already. I was surprised that the 2 disc sountrack actually comes in its own plastic case the size of the steelbook case itself; as opposed to the smaller square plastic cases that are the usual standard.

Another great SMT game to add to the franchise
13 May 2022

SMT fans rejoice, it's another excellent RPG in the franchise. Currently in the middle of playing this game, but so far, it's a good one.Fans will be familiar with the mechanics and the demon summoning as it makes a return in this game. It wouldn't really be a SMT game without it, really. Press turn system, demon fusion & miracles (aka the app system from SMT4 & SMT4: Apocalypse). It's all there. What seems to be new (to me, at least) is that there is more emphasis on exploration as it gives more of that open-world feel (especially when you first met your navigator). In addition, you mostly engage enemies on your terms, not by random battles.Graphics are beautiful, but the FPS does seem to fluctuate. Still definitely tolerable though, in my opinion. However, after playing quite a bit, I just seemed to forget about it and was more focused on the game itself. Music is pretty good ranging from sort of ambience-like to jazz rock fusion mix. A lot of quality of life features like auto-heal, fast travel, return to save point from wherever you are, one-stop shop, etc. I feel like this is a good starting point for those new to SMT. The game does feel easier than other SMT games I've played (I played SMT3 Nocturne, SMT4, and SMT4: Apocalypse), but maybe it gets harder late game.If you like RPGs that is loosely similar to Pokemon games, then you'll probably like this one. Less emphasis on collecting monsters, and more emphasis on party-building. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Ast's review of Shin Megami Tensei V
20 November 2021

I loved Lucifer's Call. I also adore Persona and the SMT series anyway. This is like the overhaul/successor to Lucifer's Call I had forgotten I wanted. Traversal is genuinely pretty sweet and rewarding that I don't mind taking the time out to turn it into a momentary platform gaming treasure hunt. Currently only thirteen hours in, but I'm liking the intrigue in the story and the characters. I like that you can set sound and voice levels to what you want and the background music sets up the world perfectly. There are very good cues for hidden things and when to prepare. For me, even the grind is satisfying; to catch all the demons for fusion and get stronger - a main stay in the Atlus franchise, like with another Nintendo one - 'gotta catch 'em all' (Then mush them ... MoreI loved Lucifer's Call. For me, even the grind is satisfying; to catch all the demons for fusion and get stronger - a main stay in the Atlus franchise, like with another Nintendo one - 'gotta catch 'em all' (Then mush them together for more power)! With things popping into existence and the texturing sometimes delayed could be a drawback but it doesn't detract from my experience because I'm used to, and like, musou games. It's everything I wanted from an updated, upgraded Lucifer's Call. (Sidenote: The main male protagonist is pretty enough to rival the MC from Persona 3! A plus! Though I would like to see some more games where you can choose to either be a female or male lead, the closest we've had to a female protagonist is P3P. I love the MCs from Persona 3, 4 and 5 - games I've completed, but the choice whether to be represented in a more female, male or even androgynous form would be pretty awesome.)

One of my favorite Switch games! The game itself is very good and I enjoyed it quite a lot. The combat definitely mixes things up if you’re a traditional RPG fan. It’s not exactly for everyone so I would look into it deeper online to see if the themes, story (it is brief or just very minimal compared to most RPGs) and combat difficulty is something you would enjoy or like to try. I’d say definitely worth a shot just be open to something new or different if you’ve never played an SMT game before and have only played traditional RPGs like final fantasy or dragon quest for example.

Good JRPG
25 December 2021

Good JRPG with good graphics for Switch. Load times aren't bad at all. Framer ate can take a hit sometimes, but I never found it to ruin the experience. This one can get a bit grind heavy due to the trash monsters low levels that quickly taper off in XP value, but battles are fun. The fusion system is addicting and keeps pulling you in to keep going for a better demon. I haven't finished it yet so I can't comment on the late story, but it seems standard faire for SMT....nothing groundbreaking, but decent. I will say that those looking for another Persona game should not look here. This is not a game focused on personal relationships and more stylized presentation. SMT V was a surprisingly addictive, fun JRPG!
14 January 2022

I don’t have a big history with the Shin Megami Tensei series. I’ve played the opening hours of IV on my 2DS and enjoyed it, but the high level of difficulty and lack of “truly” easy options in past games has always deterred me from diving in and staying committed. The Persona series has captivated me in past years, however, due to the heavier emphasis on character interactions, story, and the inclusion of easier difficulty options.Fast forward to SMT V’s release and I pulled the trigger entirely due to the fact that there would be not only an easy option, but an optional patched download for a safety option. Knowing I could always resort to the safety difficulty if it began to become too daunting, I was confident this would be “the one”. Knowing I could always resort to the safety difficulty if it began to become too daunting, I was confident this would be “the one”. And… it was.I played the first 10 or so hours on easy/casual and easy immediately drawn in to the wonderfully weird/dark world of Da’at. The story, while admittedly very light and the characters had me interested from the beginning and kept me wanting to see what would happen the rest of the way through. The exploration, combat, menu navigation, and Quest system was some of the best I’ve experienced in a JRPG in a long time. Everything flows together so well, is quick and easy to navigate, the movement and light-platforming made running around the semi-open worlds a blast — in addition to there being hidden items and NPC’s to discover around nearly every corner. Dialogue was interesting and fun. The graphics were gorgeous and the color vibrancy and vast and unique environments kept everything feeling fun and exhilarating to discover. And the soundtrack. Oh the soundtrack… one of the best, by far, I’ve heard in a LONG time. It fit the atmosphere and mood, cutscenes, combat, and exploration SO well. Every track was expertly composed and hauntingly beautiful to very hype.I switched over to safety mode after those initial 10 hours and never regretted it. It allowed me to freely enjoy exploring the world, fulfill side quests, fight bosses, and enjoy the combat system at my leisure and didn’t detract one bit from my enjoyment of the game — in fact, it made me enjoy it more fully and to completion (which can’t be said for IV or other games in the series that I found to just be too consistently challenging).Overall, whether you’re like me and want to enjoy the game without a challenge, or want to go in and prove your metal by raising the difficulty, if you enjoy JRPG’s, like darker stories, have enjoyed past SMT or Persona titles, or like post apocalyptic worlds, this game couldn’t be recommended more.

Shin Megami Tensei V (Nintendo Switch)What an incredible experience. This is the first time I actually get a game on release day and play through it exclusively until done. A massive upgrade from the previous entries.Great story, pretty good characters (kinda 2D unfortunately), incredible selection of demons/gods/angels to collect/fuse. Graphics were almost unbelievable for a switch game, to see how far the series has gone, game looks absolutely gorgeous. Even in handheld the game performed excellent and still looked phenomenal, definately worth the wait (game was announced back in 2017!)However with all the improvements, i wish they wouldve kept some of the mechanics from SMT 3/4, demon fusion skill selection shouldve been kept. and they kind of watered down ... MoreShin Megami Tensei V (Nintendo Switch)What an incredible experience. Same ways to create new ones. That's another + in my book.
