I use a capo quite a bit. I have one in every guitar case.I like the fact that they don't extend past the fret board.this allows the ability to get to some chords that need to be up around the first fret.and I like that they come in different shades

Ah yes, the Shubb in brass. It's aging so well with a beautiful patina. You simply cannot do better than a Shubb. They've really thought out the whole design. Replaceable rubber bits and all, it's designed to last a lifetime which is unusual in our throwaway culture. It's the way we built things once here in the USA (and other countries too!). Not the best business model but kind to the musician and to the planet. These are discreet too, they look unassuming and they work better than anything else I've encountered. I was an anti-capo elitist snob before a kid wanted to learn some Smiths and Beatles tune and I bought one right away. I have a G7th capo and find it good but a bit thick, so playing close to it is sometimes gets a bit cramped and often I will set it closer to the centre of the fret and then this means clamping it a bit harder. The ratchet idea on the G7th is great but I have found the rubber is now quite indented and needs more squeezing to get better pressure on the strings (this is after several years though) the Shubb is a mechanical clamp and once set to your guitars neck radius will just clip neatly and firmly on. I bought the brass one for my vintage Guild 6-string as the 12-string aluminum capo had served me so well. This capo was tarnished but I forgave that. I could not forgive the fact that this thing couldn't seem to exert equal pressure on the strings. I would have the bass strings ringing out when I played, but the treble strings would be muted. I would then adjust the screw to tighten and then the bass strings would be pitched up an extra semitone from where they were supposed to be. This was the case no matter how much I tinkered with it.Thankfully Musician's Friend was kind enough to send me a replacement D'Addarrio capo that works great.
This is the capo you want. The way you can adjust the tension is just amazing if you use your capo down near the 5th or 7th fret like I do for Stones songs. I've used a Kyser quick change capo for years and this is far better. The Kyser is good for acoustics but it grabs the strings too hard on a Tele down on the lower frets and takes it out of tune. I'm not knocking the Kyser, it has served me well but I like this better. Also, (and this is just a personal preference) I don't like a bunch of stuff clamped on the headstock of my guitars whether it be capos and tuners or whatever. This thing is really sleek and looks great, but it's hardly even visible to anyone in front of you. There's no need to have the ability to clamp this on your headstock because it's so small ... I have a Shubb capo for each of my instruments, Martin D42 guitar and Stelling sunflower banjo. Absolutely terrific device that keeps my instruments in tune. Wherever I place them up and down the neck.
I only use Shubb capos. For years I used spring tension capos, but my Ibanez hollow body would quickly go out of tune, mostly because the spring tension was not adjustable, and it pushed the strings down too tightly. I tried a Dunlop capo, because the tension is adjustable, but you had to release the tension to get it off the neck, so it needed to be readjusted each time. Shubb lets you set the tension to exactly what you need. It pops off quickly, and goes back on exactly as it was set. Shubb has a variety of head shapes for various guitar neck radius's and neck styles, and a variety of colors. Years back I never thought I would spend $20 on a capo. Now I wouldn't use anything else. If you are into music, Shubb makes the best, most cost effective capos in the industry.
Partial capos are a bit of an acquired taste, and most guitarists probably won't see the need. However, if you're seeking some different "open" sounds for, say, your acoustic-electric (I play Ovation), then the Shubb C7B is worth a look. (There are other options e.g. Kyser, G7th, Liberty Flip, or even a spider capo), but I like the C7B because it doesn't get in the way when playing. I also like the fact that you can easily trim a few millimetres off the width of the rubber foot if it's too wide for your guitar (e.g. as it tends to be on my Strat.) One resource I'd recommend for anyone wanting to get into partial is the book "Secrets of the 3-String Partial Capo" by Harvey Reid. I picked this one out cause I did a little research and found this was on the top of the list as for what I needed...I did do some more research on Shubb's capos or I would of ordered the roller style capos they have...But, as for this capo, it's still a winner...My first capo was from the early 60's and nothing like this, so if I could take my old capo off and on fairly quickly, this will be a snap once I get used to it..Easy to figure out how to properly mount it and it doesn't interfere with my movement...This is an original style from Shubb's, so even though they've improved on their design, this one is one you'll keep forever..Oh, did I mention it's got a lifetime warranty where either they'll send you the part needed or you can send it in for repairs...
