I have 4 other kick drum capable mics, 2x Audix D6 and 2x Audio-Technica ATM-25's. The Beta 52A offers a bit more distinctive "classic rock kick" sound - not to diminish the sound and capabilities of the other mics, but the B52A expands my palette of low-frequency offerings. Sounds great under a large djembe too! Sturdy and well constructed - easily one of the heaviest mics I own, weighing nearly as much as a large tube studio condenser! Again, for me it's about having a wide range of color options with my live mics and this fits nicely with it's locker-mates ~ especially when you've got a middle-aged slugger behind the skins who wants that thud turned up to 11!

I purchased this microphone with intention of replacing a much cheaper Nady microphone I have been using to record my bass drum. The Nady microphone was fine, but I was looking from something to give a little more warmth to my bass drum sound. I had read other reviews and many suggested that this microphone offers more 'boom' than 'punch'. To an extent, I agree with that; I don't have a large enough port hole in my front bass drum head for this microphone so I miked the batter side of the head with the Shure and used the Nady to catch more of the inside of the bass drum and the front head. The sound was ok but nowhere near what I wanted. The sound was muddled with not a whole lot of definition.I then read a review where someone strongly suggested getting a SHU ... MoreI purchased this microphone with intention of replacing a much cheaper Nady microphone I have been using to record my bass drum. I would like to say "thank you" to that person because they were right on the money. Once I got my hands on the SHU and mounted the Shure inside the bass drum a few inches away from the batter head, the sound of the bass drum was exactly what I heard in my head. There was a nice, strong punch sound followed by a nice, decaying boom sound. I highly recommend anyone buying this microphone to invest in purchasing a SHU internal bass drum mount. No matter what bass drum sound you desire, the combination of this microphone and mount will surely give you the sound you want out of your bass drum.

Currently using this mic on a bass guitar cab. Picks up the low end quite well. Very full bodied sound. It requires quite a bit of gain to stand out in the mix, so make sure you've got a good preamp.

Many "Professional Bassists & Drummers" use the "Shure Beta 52A" in front of their instrument or speaker cabinet with a low profile mic boom stand & microphone cable to record their sound. The Shure Beta 52A is a very tough high quality "Bass Speaker & Kick Drum Microphone". Frequency Response: 20 to 10,000Hz. The DR Pro Low Profile Mic Boom Stand & XLR Gear One microphone cable are both very high quality. Works with both analog or digital mixers & recording equipment.
The Beta-52 is possibly one of the most useful tools to have in your arsenal as a sound engineer or drummer. It looks good, sounds good in every kick I've ever used it on, and just plain works. Bought this beat up on on the eBay because I needed a second for a band I work with now and then. Best sound, consistently: Put the mic just inside the kick drum port, with the blue rubber line even with the port. It'll sound great in almost every drum out there. Plenty of FOOMP, THUD and CLICK, for almost any style of music. We do everything from metal to bluegrass. This workhorse get's it done.
I do allot of home recordings. I consider myself very experienced 30 years and thousands of hours.I wanted a kick mic for my DW Collectors kit so I bought 3 to test. The Beta 52a when recorded without any compression or EQ sounded like I was hitting a cardboard box. After I compressed and EQ'd it got better but it has a high click in the tone that the other 2 mics don't have. The Audix D6 and Sennheiser evolution e 902 had a better sound out of the box punchy and fat with out EQ or compression. I'd recommend both. I ended up choosing the Audix D6 but they were both very nice.
I had previously used this same Mic, therefore i was pleased with its quality in sound and structure. Back in the day I used the AKG D112 on tje road, until this Mic came along. The name brand of Shure has been top quality for years, so when this mic was introduced, at about half the cost of a AKG D112, i decided to try it out. Im glad i did because you cant beat it for the price and quality and sound. Everyone has personal preference and particular use and sounds that they want and need, so this was my choice. Its like TAMA vs PEARL, or ZILDJIAN vs SABIAN, or CHEVY vs FORD. Everyone has their opinions and wants and needs, but i choose Shure Beta 52A with a 24" TAMA Starclassic Maple Kick Drum and it Rocks! I also use Zildjian A Custom Cymbals, own a 1969 Nova SS ... MoreI had previously used this same Mic, therefore i was pleased with its quality in sound and structure. Overall:If you’re looking for a kick drum mic that’s not too expensive and sounds great. This is the one. There are other mics that can do other fancy things like be in hyper cardioid but this is great. Whether for live application or studio, it’s a great choice. I want to get the Lauten Audio LS-308 Noise-Rejecting Condenser Microphone for kick to record. I’ve also used this to record and it’s great.
Building a microphone collection currently and after reading many reviews of this mic I decided to have one. Sensitive and great sound so far. Good bass response but not boomy and overwhelming.
I use this miking a Gallien-Krueger 212 NEO II cab and use a GK 550 fusion amp. I place the mic about 2 inches in front of the edge of the 12" speaker. Good lows, a little less mids, and not much highs that I can hear. I run through a sub with 2 15" so my FOH guy says it's OK for that ( 40 - 200 Hz). My issue is my amp is bi-amped internally, so I can either mic the lows, or mic the mids/highs. I can't mike both unless I use two mics. So I still have to run a DI from the amp into the house for the mids and highs, a little more work for him. If you know the specs for your bass amp check out the DI (if you have one) first. You may not need this. Or you may need two. If you do not have a DI then this will put you into the subs.
