Shure PGA58 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone With XLR-QTR Cable

(488 reviews)

When it comes to microphones Shure needs no introduction, with two particular models of theirs being used extensively across the industry. The PGA58 cardioid dynamic vocal mic is carefully designed for a very specific purpose, to best suit both lead and backing vocal performance applications. Perfect for all vocal applications The frequency response of the PGA58 ranges from 50Hz to 16kHz, capturing the unique timbre of each performer's voice with ease. The dynamic design ensures that the microphone can capably deal with large amounts of sound energy, so no matter how powerful the singer's voice is, only their voice will be transmitted and no colouration or distortion will affect the signal. A unique neodymium magnet ensures a smooth response, as well as giving the ability to generate an enormous output level so that vocalists can take advantage of a huge dynamic range. Thanks to the unidirectional cardioid pattern, capturing very specific sound sources is incredibly easy - particularly useful when capturing vocalists who're part of an ensemble, as isolating each sound source and separation is much simpler. The robust and rugged construction makes it excellent for singers who like to work the stage and move around a lot. The tough and durable metal construction means that the PGA58 is built like a tank, yet only weighs in at a very comfortable 300g. All that you need Shure include a 15ft cable, a break-resistant mic clip and even a storage bag, so you're good to hit the studio or the stage as soon as it arrives. Whether you're a singer or a front-of-house engineer, the PGA58 is an exceptionally robust vocal microphone, which captures vocals with all the articulation and subtlety you could ever want.

1st experience XLR mic

Coupled with my Boss Cube Street II I was amazed at the sound of this mic compared to the cheapo ones I had been using.Having upgraded a lot of my equipment I decided it would make sense to also upgrade from the cheapo Karaoke mic I had been using.I'm so glad that I did. I'm on a tight budget so I went for the best I could afford and this fitted the bill. The sound quality is remarkable, to my amateur ears, and I will have full confidence in using it when I perform.

It works fine if you hold it very close to your mouth at just the right angle. Users have to be proficient at using a "singer type" of microphone. We tried to use it for different people taking turns speaking at a large meeting. Most of the people couldn't be heard because they couldn't get the angle correct. It was very frustrating.

First of all PGA-58 sounds like the year PGA (Professional Golf Association) championships started but maybe it's just a coincidence. Never mind, the mic is good but for some reason it sounds low comparing to SM-58 or any other Shure-made vocal mic. I plugged it to different sound systems and the effect is the same. I was expecting to have more bang for the buck but it just the opposite. I wonder if anyone else noticed the same thing. Other than that, it's a great mic. Oh, one more thing, the on/off switch is hidden tight in the track so sometimes is hard to move it quickly and it gets stuck in between instead of snapping to the either on or off position like many other mics do. Thanks.

Great mic!
30 March 2022

We DJ, and are using these mics with Pioneer controllers. We bought this mic because it has a switch. The switch is smooth, quiet, and easy to use on a stand, or in hand. The sound is awesome. We noticed the difference immediately, and we received compliments from our regulars. Very clean, rich sound, with no background or feedback issues.

Great value for money!

I use this microphone for gigs as a solo acoustic performer since September 2022 and it has been fantastic. No issues whatsoever, seems a very good quality microphone especially for the price. Feels solid and sound quality is great.

I had one job…
2 December 2021

This mic is a solid and reliable performer… unlike me it seems. I am the front man in the band. My job is to entertain and climb through the tapestry of sound created by my talented band mates, floating on their sonic offerings and weaving an unforgettable experience for the audience. All I have to remember for practice is my mic… my trusted SM58 of nearly 20 years (only changed the dust cover once). Well last time I forgot and this mic and PMT click and collect saved the practice session (our first in 2 years). Great service and a great product.

It's a SHURE thing!

Every musician and vocalist loves the Shure SM58 microphone for it's great sound and rugged durability. The Shure PGA58 does lots of what the SM58 does at a very reasonable price. Like the SM58, the PGA58 is also built like a tank, has great sound, and the on/off switch is definitely a plus. I leave this mic in a gig bag in the trunk of my car all year long. So it gets exposed to very hot conditions in the summer and very cold conditions in the winter and this mic takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. To sum it up: The SM58 (50 to 15,000 Hz) does have a wider frequency range than the PGA58 does.(50 to 16,000 Hz) And, I've read that the SM58 may do a better job with mic handling noise if you're using your mic in a hand held capacity (like Roger Daltry) rather than on ... MoreEvery musician and vocalist loves the Shure SM58 microphone for it's great sound and rugged durability. This is a professional quality microphone at great price. (And, the all black color looks great too!)

Seems good quality
15 September 2022

I've not had a chance to properly test this other than a brief plug in and sound test in the house. Seems and feels like a good quality microphone. Just be aware that the stand that comes with it isn't a boom stand and only extends so far. Probably fine if all your gigs are sitting down but may struggle if you're a bit taller.

Wow! I ditched my SM58 for this mic!
24 January 2022

This mic sounds excellent! For karaoke I prefer this mic over the SM58 any day, but for big events with big venue I still prefer the SM58. PGA58 has higher output, no need to crank up the gain like you do with the SM58. All I can say is this mic is beautiful. Perfect for busking! Also withstands miking bass drums or guitar cabinets. Great all rounder mic and for the money, is great value.

rich warm vocal reproduction
3 June 2020

I compared the sound quality of the PGA58 vs the Shure PG48 and the Zoom XYH-5 X/Y Mic capsule by simultaneously recording a baritone singing acapella with the Zoom H5. The PGA58 was clearly superior in the warmth and richness of its sound. Other characteristics were similar. We have used it in church service recordings with good results, including a close-up recording of a piano -- producing more natural sound than the PG48. None of this is surprising and is what you would expect given the product information from Shure and B&H, but its nice to have it confirmed by ear!
