Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC Autofocus Zoom Aspherical Lens For Canon Digital SLR Cameras

(12 reviews)

This zoom lens was exclusively designed to suit the characteristics of digital SLR cameras. The image circle was designed to match the size of the image sensors of digital SLR cameras, and this produced a compact lens with a maximum diameter of 60mm (2.3 inches), overall length of 67.5 mm (2.6 inches), and weight of only 245 grams (8.6 ounces). It has a variable angle of view of 69.3 degrees to 27.9 degrees. The use of aspherical lenses provides correction for various aberrations throughout the entire zoom range and produces a high level of optical performance. The 18-50mm f3.5-5.6 DC lens has a minimum focusing distance of 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) at all focal lengths and is capable of macro photography with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.5.

First class, quality camera lens. My 6th lens by SIGMA

I bought this lens for its good photographic quality, both in sharpness and colour reproduction. The price to build quality is second to none. This is the 6th SIGMA lens I have purchased with no problems.Regards John Powell. Nikon and Canon didgital and analogue owner.

Good alternative to marquee kit lens

Unlike the Nikkor 18-55mm, this Sigma lens has a metal mount. At maximum aperture however, the image is a little soft. Stopping down to f8 gives much better results at all focal lengths, although the Nikon lens has better sharpness. Overall, a good lens for everyday shooting.

Like: Great value for the dollar. Better build quality than the Canon 18-55. Metal mount versus plastic on the Canon Images are decent quality Cons: Slow focus motor, but what do you want for under $100? Feels a little light weight Decided to purchase for my Canon 20d that I purchased off Ebay as a body only purchase. So it will be a good solution until I can afford a higher quality Canon lens.

Great Value
22 July 2009

I've used this lens for family portraits and weddings. It fits the bill for large group shots, and when I need to get wide. It is reasonably sharp for an inexpensive lens. Not as sharp as Canon's 17-40L but it's not priced to be either. My only issue is the red CA that is in nearly every image. I know when I process my pics from this lens the first thing I do in Lightroom is fix the CA.

Great lens for the money
15 October 2010

This lens is great! I bought it for my Canon EOS 10D, and I can get pretty sharp pictures with minimal CA, purple fringing, or barrel distortion. The lens body feels rugged overall, the mount is very sturdy, and the zoom and focus rings turn smoothly. Then there are the downsides, which are more or less common among lenses at this price. First, the maximum aperture is only f/3.5 at the wide end and f/5.6 at the telephoto end, so it is not a fast lens (and images are a bit soft at this aperture too). Second, the focusing motor in mine sounds a bit like a pig squealing. Third and last, you won't get the same image quality from this lens as you would with a more expensive lens. In summary, this is a great lens for the price. It is a good replacement for the 18-55mm kit ... MoreThis lens is great! Plus this one will even fit on older Canon bodies that only have the EF lens mount! I highly recommend this lens if you can't afford a better, more-expensive one.

IR and UV Photographers....
17 March 2008

This simple and inexpensive lens has for the price pretty good performance, better than the Canon kit lens. For general use I would recommend stepping up to the 17-70mm or 18-50mm 2.8ex dc that have much better performance. There is one alternative use for this lens: Infrared and Ultraviolet Photography. For IR (using a Hoya R72 filter) you will not get hotspots and most Canon SLRs are sensitive enough to IR. This lens only has 8 elements and simple lens coating, so it actually can be used for near UV photography as well (with a B+W 403 filter). I must warn that Canon SLRs are very insensitive to UV and records on the blue channel only, so expect 30-45 second exposures on sunny days and you'll get significant IR contamination through the red and green channels. ... MoreThis simple and inexpensive lens has for the price pretty good performance, better than the Canon kit lens. Nikon and Pentax SLRs are much more suitable for UV photography though with exposure times around 5 seconds on sunny days.

Review of Sigma 18-50mm F3.5-5.6 DC Lens
26 November 2008

I am starting in the world of photography. So I'm getting my material wherever it's cheaper. This lens has been one of them. It only cost 25 bucks in Ebay.co.uk. The tests that I have undertaken with this lens have been basically indoors pics, so you can't appreciate much of its properties. I have realised that when you operate in widest angle end It has a little bit of barrel distortion but nothing not fixable with a good PS treatment. It is much brighter than the others I have and crispier too so I think its a good acquisition. The autofocus system is very quick and It uses the flash to focus if there isn't enough light. I would give a 85.

Sharp Lens
17 April 2008

I bought this lens as a back up wide angle and with the good reviews I was reading for such a "cheap" lens I didn't think I could go wrong. So far I must agree with all the others it has proven to be a sharp lens. Most of my pics have been taken outdoors so the f/stop doesn't bother me but I think for indoors shooting it could be an issue...but easily dealt with. The lens feels very light on my camera and does not interfere with handling while not in use. My only complaint thus far with this lens is the manual focus ring feels very loose...I don't feel it is a fault with the construction of this particular lens, just an overall design "flaw".

Sigma 18-50mm F3.5 Zoom Lens Canon fit.
10 March 2010

This lens particularly in the Canon EF fit is a far better lens than the "kit" lens supplied with most Canon digital SLR's. It has a metal mount unlike the cheap plastic one of the Canon, it is sharper and much better made. The earlier versions of this lens in the red box has a noisier auto focus motor and causes error 01 on the EOS 10D camera. Make sure you get the later one in the black box.
