Sigma 65mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens For Sony E Mount
Perfectly weighted for mirrorless systems the new 65mm F2 DG DN | C blends a very compact design with an unusual but versatile focal length that is much loved by both photographers and film makers. This ultra sharp full frame optic is a perfect mid point between standard primes and classic portrait lenses, and is ideal for portraits, weddings, short telephoto landscapes, street photography and astrophotography. Anti ghosting and anti flare technology ensures high end performance in backlit conditions. The lens displays a particularly attractive bokeh effect thanks to the control of spherical aberration and its nine rounded diaphragm blades, with near circular out-of-focus highlights across the frame and at the widest aperture of F2. The 65mm F2 DG DN | C comes with a carefully machined metal lens hood, a feature not even found on Sigma’s Art series lenses. A large number of grooves called knurling are cut in, improving the lens operation by serving as slip resistance and giving the lens a premium look and feel unique to the I Series. A specially chosen plastic was used for the part that connects to the lens to ensure smooth operation. Included in the box is the regular Sigma plastic lens cap as well as an all-metal magnetic cap, which snaps firmly on to the end of the lens. With no requirement for a spring-loaded clasp, the cap has a sleek, minimal finish.

I have a Sigma FP and of course I ordered it with the 45mm originally. I tried a few other lenses before settling on the new Sigma 24mm Contemporary. I'm so glad I did! This lens is tack sharp from f2.8 and above and at f2 there's just the slightest softness, but barely noticeable. There's no vignetting at all on full frame. I've exercised this lens extensively in low light as well and it performs beautifully! Examples on YouTube/floridaambient

So far I'm really liking this lens . I've just shot some landscape and nature photos with it and some of the wife around the house. I got it for live music photography and videography mainly. I haven't had a chance to shoot that with it so far .But for landscape and nature "wow" . Love the colors and sharpness. It took a couple hours for shooting landscape with it and learning framing, composition with 65mm . Once I started getting a feel for it I was really liking it .The images off this lens are hands down beautiful. I'd read reviews that it was sterile in its rendering because it was so perfect. Not true at al . It is very perfect but has a beautiful rendering that just happens to be perfection. It for environmental portraiture at 65mm is nice . There is subject isolation but with enough surrounding to tell a story . An 85 can do that but it's like the best of both a 50 and an 85 . Very normal looking almost to a fault and this is where some folks will create that sterile type image . So be creative with your composition and work to tell that story .Peace and don't get one of these lenses. I want the originality of the guy shooting the 65 .

Perfect size and balance on Leica SL2-s. The rendering has a bit of character and after just comparing to the newly released Sigma 20mm, it has less distortion and I think is sharper across the field. Almost no flare seen. There is some softness in the corners at f/2 as expected. Micro contrast is not as high as so Leica lenses but a tenth the price! Build quality is excellent with metal construction and not to heavy. The placement of the focus and aperture rings seems just right and work well with gloves on. One minor disappointment is that the included magnetic lens cover (you get both a plastic snap on and metal magnetic) does not work if you have any filter on the front of the lens (uv, polarizer, ND etc). So far have never used the magnetic cover for that reason - I have tried all the Sigma contemporary dg dn lenses and this is my favorite and most useful for the way I shot (mostly landscape). Great size for hiking too.
It's not just a great option, it's an outstanding lens. Very sharp wide open, great for astrophotography, beautiful colors (coatings), compact, metal built, aperture ring, its a gem of a lens. Only negative is the distortion, but it's a 20mm,juat crop a little, small adjustments in post will do the trick. Very happy with it. Sigma 20mm 1.4 is gen 2 is coming out soon for almost twice the price, twice the weight, more lens elements, not sure for my needs I can justify the price difference. I can't stress enough how good it feels to have such a good performance out of such a compact lens, the sigma 20mm f2 comes highly recommended.
This is a great lens . If there is one issue thats not as good as the Sony lenses its auto focus . There can be a pulsing effect instead of a fast lock on and it can loose a subject then lock on in video sometimes. Thats the bad out of the way. And its so sharp that the Sony in camera sharpening combined and high contrast rendering, peoples skin can be harsh . Now thats all the bad out of the way . For the good it starts with the color , there is the Sigma tint to images vs the Sony . Sony is rendering very very real or perfect and thats good . Sigma lenses have a mild greenish old school tint thats pleasing. This lens Ive heard some say its rendering is so perfect its sterile. I dont think so , to me I get a feeling from the rendering. Dont know how to explain it ... MoreThis is a great lens . If there is one issue thats not as good as the Sony lenses its auto focus . This lens is incredible! I purchased the L-Mount version and I'm using it on the original SL (Typ 601).Everyone always wants to know if the lens is sharp. Answer: A resounding yes! But there is a lot more to a lens than sharpness alone. What about the character? Most modern lenses have almost no character, however, after buying this lens and also trying the 90mm f2.8 and the 35mm f2, I find that they all draw similarly and offer the same look and feel to the images. And yes, there is a feeling. It's very creamy and dreamy wide open yet with a pinpoint sharpness that is never harsh. The best way to describe the look is cinematic. Highly recommended! If you are considering this lens and have never owned a Sigma product (I haven't owned a Sigma lens since the mid '80s), please do yourself a favor and spend an hour on Sigma's website to learn not only about this I-Series of Contemporary lenses but about the philosophy behind them as well. And also about the build quality and engineering and design. Finally, look into the company. They are not a typical company but are very different and very special.
I don't think this lens is a 5 lens. Image quality is pretty good from f2 until f4. Above f4 this lens sharpens up nicely. By f11 sharpness is superb.I shot this lens recently on my SL2 and was impressed by the stopped-down sharpness.Build quality is definitely 5. The metal lens hood secures very well, surrounding a lens filter rather than on to a lens filter (I hope this makes sense).Aperture selection is firm and click into place nicely.I have not shot manual so I won't comment on manual focusing. Finally, mounted on my SL2 this lens was recognized. Presumably any in-camera image adjustments were made. The one time I've used this lens thus far I shot 50-60 shots, tossed them all out except one of the wife. Hence at this time no shots to contribute to ... MoreI don't think this lens is a 5 lens. Image quality is pretty good from f2 until f4. Above f4 this lens sharpens up nicely. I spent a lot of time considering which 35mm lens to get for my Leica SL. I was looking for something which would give a more analog shooting experience, be solidly built and not break the bank. I love the Sigma lenses, they have fantastic build quality. I appreciate the aperture ring on the lens barrel, it fits the 'old school' aesthetic I was after without having to rely solely on manual focus.Image quality is very good though I am not a pixel peeper. I am mostly interested in b&w images but my RAW files have beautiful color rendering. Out of focus areas have very nice, creamy bokeh. Autofocus seems quick & accurate which is important as I shoot mostly wide open. While I've only had the lens a couple weeks, I find it a very solid choice and am confident I made ... MoreI spent a lot of time considering which 35mm lens to get for my Leica SL. I bought this lens after being quite disappointed with the softness and size of the Sony GM 14mm f1.8 lens (which I returned). The Sigma 20mm f1.8 was a bit of a gamble - less wide than I wanted for astro. BUT - in the weeks I have had it it has become the lens that stays on my R3. I have shot well over a thousand frames with it and am delighted. I can report that the 20mm f1.8 is super sharp in center from wide open and sharp across the frame at f4. Autofocus works perfectly and fast. Lens is small and light enough to be carried around. No funky lens hood or filters to worry about. Groups, landscapes, macro, astro - it does it all!. I have nine Sony mount lenses from the Sigma 20 to the Sony GM100-400. This 20 is what I use now for 90% of my shooting.
