Sigma f/4 DG OS HSM Sports Lens Nikon, 500mm

(45 reviews)

Loaded with almost every piece of technology in Sigma's Global Vision arsenal, the 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Lens takes its spot as the flagship in the speedy Sports line. Available here with a Canon EF mount, this super telephoto lens lets you capture distant subjects, and with a speedy Hyper Sonic AF motor users will be able to easily track fast action. A relatively fast maximum aperture of f/4 furthers your imaging potential with excellent illumination for a lens of this class. One SLD and two FLD elements help ensure outstanding optical performance by minimizing aberrations and distortion while a Super Multi-Layer coating combats flare and ghosting. Also, this lens is equipped with an Optical Stabilizer system that compensates for up to 4 stops of shutter speed. This large lens is designed to be used in some of the most trying conditions and is made from a durable and lightweight magnesium alloy. It is protected from dust and water and uses a brass bayonet mount. Filter users will appreciate a 46mm drop-in filter system while a rotating tripod collar is available for using the lens on a tripod or monopod. Additionally, the 500mm lens is fully compatible with Sigma's Global Vision teleconverter for getting an extended reach.

My specialty is wildlife photography with a major interest in birds and birds in flight. The image quality of this Sigma 500mm lens is nothing short of fantastic. I have had excellent results with this lens when using the matching Sigma TC-1401 and TC-2001 teleconverters and even when used wide open, the images are sharp edge to edge with good contrast and need very minimal post processing when using a camera such as the Canon EOS 1DxMkII, which is what I use.The ability to customize this lens with the USB dock is great, as it allows ...Β MoreI have purchased this lens just over a year ago to replace my Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto. Dont get me wrong, I know that the Canon and Nikon lenses of this caliber are also incredible, but for the price you simply cannot go wrong with the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport lens.I would highly recommend anyone who is on a budget to consider this lens. Had some issues with a lack of sharpness, thought it was the lens at first so I stowed it for the rest of the race weekend, never to be used again (which I now regret). After closely reviewing my photos it turns out I was dealing with heat distortion... not a lens issue. $300 lesson learned! Next time I'll take air/surface temperature into consideration. Long lens problems.

High quality lens.

The bokeh is lovely, the OS works very well, it focusses fast and accurately and it is fully 'tunable' using the Sigma USB dock. This takes some time to achieve but really does make a difference. Sadly you can only tune it for one camera body though and as I use both a D500 and a D810, this is irritating.Be warned though, it is very big and heavy, difficult to use and vicious in picking your technique to pieces. It needs a lot of practice. You can hand-hold it but it is better on a tripod with a gimbal head if possible. The adjustability and tune-ability of this lens is excellent and something that you do not get with the Nikkor. In all respects, I think that it is as good as, or better than the Nikon, including its construction, that is to a very high standard.I have not brought it onto an aircraft yet but it should be possible I think. It comes with a truly practical 'Think Tank' like back-pack - unlike the Nikon that comes with a superb, heavy-duty packing case that is totally useless! These big prime telephotos are not easy to use and if contemplating buying one without having used something this large before, I would recommend hiring one first if you can.

Inconsistent autofocus
11 June 2018

Bought this thinking it would be a great addition. Sadly had nothing but issues with it. Autofocus was fine to begin with but soon started playing up and giving inconsistent results, the os became very noisy and it just felt cheap. I've used Nikon 500mm lenses for years without any issue and I regret not sticking with Nikon after my experience with the Sigma. The mount also worked itself loose after a couple of months. It's not warthersealed as well as the Nikon lenses either. A little moisture got on the barrel and I noticed the inside of the lens had residual moisture that didn't go away! No wonder it's so cheap for a 500 F4 prime! My advice would be to avoid this and stick with your own branded lenses. The sigma is in no way comparable to the Nikon or Canon primes.

Lovely images - keep it on a tripod
23 March 2022

This is my first big prime for birding and I'm really liking the results so far. As others have noted, the image quality is fantastic. But when hiking more than a few steps it's often my Canon 100-400 that comes along instead. It comes with a nice backpack I haven't tried yet, but man it is heavy. You'd have to be popeye to hold this thing steady on it's own - I don't see how anyone could manage more than a few shots without at least a monopod. On my gimbal head it becomes featherweight, but it's a different experience being mostly stationary with a tripod. I expect my shots will improve as I develop patience and let the birds do more of the traveling.

Loving it so far!
10 April 2017

I'm only a very amateur bird photographer. So far I've taken a couple hundred pictures with the lens at a Florida rookery. The pictures are amazing compared to my old Sigma 50 - 500 zoom. The best part about this lens is how the pictures stay sharp after a lot of cropping. I've tried hand holding the lens/D800 for some birds in flight and gotten some good pictures with some luck. But, the lens is lot to hold and I can't recommend using it without a tripod, except for an occasional snap. My tripod and gimbal make it a breeze to use. My monopod and ball head, with the ball pretty much locked in place, for me is a pretty good substitute for hand holding. I could have never afforded the Nikon version of this lens. So, thank you very much Sigma!

Optically beautiful lens
5 March 2022

This is a great lens that is made all the more wonderful by its somewhat more obtainable price compared to the camera manufacturer lenses (yes, I know Sigma also makes cameras). I adapted the rental to my Fuji X-T4 to see if there is such thing as an adapter that would make one of these beauties work for moving wildlife (answer = nope). For still images though the results were great. I had a huge test matrix to go through to figure out if I would keep one of the adapters and then buy the lens and while it was ultimately a fail - it did leave me stunned by the image quality. I had an old Nikon 500 f/4 and I would be hard pressed to tell the difference. This actually produced better images on my X-T4 than the old Nikon did on a D500 (which is probably the fairest ...Β MoreThis is a great lens that is made all the more wonderful by its somewhat more obtainable price compared to the camera manufacturer lenses (yes, I know Sigma also makes cameras). The one thing I can't say is how this will actually perform on a Canon - but it is worth the rental to see if you like it. Worst case scenario - you will walk away with some keeper images.Side note - I love Lensrentals. These are customer focused people who are friendly, considerate, and willing to jump in and help when needed. If you are just getting into renting you will be thrilled.

Outstanding piece of glass

I have been shooting with this lens for a bit over two years, initialy with the Nikon D500, then with the D850 with battery grip, two years with the D500 and one year with the D850. I als oshot with the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 which is a great lens, but not in the same league as the prime when it comes to autofocus speed and tracking capabilities, and build quality. This lens is just sublime, tack sharp with excellent contrast , super fast autofocus and tracks like a cheeta tracking it's prey. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a prime lens to add to their arsenal. All my BIF shots are hand held, including the sample images I uploaded. I've been using a tripod with gimbal head but I think a monopod will do fine at higher shutter speeds. I own the very good Sigma 150-600mm sport and these images are definitely sharper. Birds become fully sharp at F6 and the auto focus captures birds in flight well. I am looking forward to shooting in better weather but my one week experience is all good. I'll keep my 150-600mm for airplane travel to Wildlife locations however the prime will be with me on auto trips and local shoots. The case is a nice feature in that you can attach your camera body to the lens and it all fits in the case. The case has backpack straps for short hikes to a location. The case is not appropriate for checked baggage on a plane but it looks like it will fit in most overhead compartments. I haven't experienced the $+ primes but my guess is that this lens will be a solid competitor
