A YA book with some meat to it

TL:DR; Essential for any Sanderson/YA fan. A brilliant book that is submitted as a 'Young Adult' novel but easily surpasses every entry I can think of (Hunger Games/Divergant/Rangers Apprentice etc) for that genre. If you haven't read Sanderson before, this is one of his best.Disclaimer: I'm an avid Sanderson reader and this is, imo, one of his best pieces. I first read Warbreaker while waiting for the next Robin Hobb and was pleasantly surprised with it - and he's only gotten better.I want to say its 'shorter' than his other books, such as the epic fantasy Words of Radiance, but I think 'concise' is a more accurate term. His characterisation, worldbuilding and exposition is among the best of any sci fi/fantasy and EASILY the best I've ever read in a 'Young Adult' ... MoreTL:DR; Essential for any Sanderson/YA fan. He handles twists like a street magician; one hand gestures while the other takes your change. Several times I finished a chapter and had to take a moment, or I punched the air with glee.9/10, a near perfect sci-fi adventure that is easily one of the best YA books of all time, and a strong entry for most 'grown-ups' as well.

I couldn't put this down and read this in almost one sitting! I was so happy to learn this author had written a sci fi as I prefer it over fantasy. Typical Brandon Sanderson in that the plot is fast paced with lots of twists and turns and cliffhangers, likeable, unique and well drawn characters, and boy is it action packed! I especially loved how he describes the flight battles, it had me on the edge of my seat. He's still not the best at writing romance though (I mean that in the NICEST way possible I love Brandon). Loved this book and loved the second book in this series too. Can't wait for the third. Highly recommend!

When I first started reading this book I thought it was more a teenage/young adult targeted book. The story didn't seem to be too deep but as I continued I saw the author simply added layer on layer on the story and the characters to paint a fantastic picture. The author delves deeper and deeper into the emotions, stresses and confusion that a young woman experiences as she tries to find her true self amongst the drama of a war and being alienated by people she fights for due to her father's legacy as a coward.I can't wait for the next book in this new series.

I absolutely loved this book

I loved this book. An underdog for a heroine. Her strength and determination sway you along the story. I loved the technical aspects of flying as well as M-bot. This book has everything that appeals to me: adventure, a female underrated hero, technical knowledge, friendship, determination, and fierceness.

These relationships were real, layered and supported the growth of each character.Sanderson was not afraid to kill off his characters or pull them out of the flight and this meant that the story was always exciting as you couldn't predict who was going to remain at the end.The world building was seemless, easy and natural. I didn't even realise how deeply I understood this new world and it's history until the final chapters where we were pulled out for a much wider view. I felt as if I could step into it as easily as taking a flight to another country in my real life.I am so invested in this world and in Spensa's journey that I'm moving straight into Starsight.

Despite it being YA and me not being Y, it was still a good read. There are things that are annoying (bratty main character, stupid way some thing are dealt with, stupid military...), but still a good read. You just need to get to the last couple of pages, that unveil the whole mystery and make you go "Aaaaah!"

Skyward-Three Stars

My husband speaks very highly of Brandon Sanderson and his adult novels so I thought I would try out his young adult books. I love Spin! She is headstrong, passionate, and all together a great character. I did however find myself asking for more throughout the book. I wanted more description, more dialogue, and more character development. I enjoyed reading about battles in the sky, but I found myself wanting more conflict on the ground. I am hoping that the second book expands on some of the side characters since they didn't really get a chance to shine in this book.

Unlikable Characters but Amazing Story
23 December 2018

This is Sanderson's newest YA release. And to be honest, I had low expectations based on my experience with his other two YA fantasies. If you have been in the bookish world for any amount of time, you will know that Sanderson is a very prolific writer and well-loved by just about everyone. But I didn't like Steelheart. I liked it enough to finish it, but I didn't continue with the trilogy. I actually enjoyed The Rithmatist, until I made it to the end and realized that it was part of a series (or at least the ending read that way) that Sanderson had no intention of finishing . Or if he does, it won't be happening any time soon. So I felt kind of cheated. Skyward is also the beginning of a trilogy/series. But, there's already a scheduled release for the Starsight (Fall 2019), so I feel comfortable reading this, and I don't mind waiting for the next one.Anyway- I really enjoyed this one, more than I thought that I would. Not just because of my previous experience, but because I couldn't stand Spensa, the main character. In fact, I can't say that there was any real characters that I actually liked. Except for M-Bot, who is really AI and not a person. But at the end, I did see each character in a different light, and I saw their potential. I really enjoyed the way that the story unfolded, snippets and images falling into place. Sanderson truly is a master craftsman when it comes to creating and establishing worlds different than our own. Even though I didn't like any characters, they did develop over the course of the story. I did enjoy seeing their growth as situations, people and life as they knew challenged them.
