A good art/ boutique lens

Pros - solid build, smooth focus rings, tack sharp in the center of the image all the way down to f1.4. Beyond is still totally useable. Minimal chromatic aberration. Rectilinear lens.Cons - (could be my particular lens) still has a slight give to it even when mounted fully to the camera. The corners of the image are never tack sharp.Neither pro nor con but just an observation - has strange highlight roll off when stopped down to f0.95, separates the over exposed part of the image with a pink/ red line. has a strong glow/ halation due it's low f stop. Milky flairs.

Awesome lens

This is my first manual lens. Great solid build and smooth and confortable rings. It's awesome for low light situations and the image quality is so good. The bokeh is awesome!

Heavy lens, well made, with precise controls for aperture and focus. Very good looking on my PEN-F. At f0.95 (in fact f0.92 since it is a T0.95), the bokeh is superb: creamy, foggy, you cannot identify the background if your subject is within the 2 meters range. However, the image is very soft even in focus: it is pretty sharp but with a kind of halo that makes your model loves you: he or she will glow! This is mostly solved at T1.1 and completely at T1.4.From T4.0, it becomes very sharp. With a M43 format, this 50mm has the cover of a 100mm.Ideal for portrait, unique if you keep your subject close, this lens allows a lot of creativity when properly used: the bokeh is somptuous, even better than my Ibelux 40mm f0.85

Decent lens for BMPCC
4 November 2013

I just got my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and immediately bought this SLR Magic 25mm lens, as well as the 50mm of the same brand. I read some reviews that said these were good low light lenses, as well as good for video - due to the declicked aperture. Please note that this lens gets sharp at an f2. Below that, you get a nice image, but it's slightly fogged - not too unlike using a fog filter. Bright lights or objects bloom. It's a nice dreamy look, but not appropriate for all situations.Interestingly, the 50mm is much faster than the 25mm. A f4 on the 50mm is nearly as bright as a f2 in the 25mm, which is quite a bit of difference. When I get a third lens I'll know which is closer to true.If you are looking for razor-thin depth-of-field, this is the lens ... MoreI just got my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and immediately bought this SLR Magic 25mm lens, as well as the 50mm of the same brand. At f0.95, the dof is literally in the millimeters when shooting inserts. Focus is hard to keep - thankfully the BMPCC has focus peaking.I am waiting for the 12mm SLR Magic to arrive, and will update. I haven't had the chance to do a comparison with the Voightlander, but am happy with this purchase, as it has the declicked aperture and follow focus gears. Also, the lens is nice and heavy. It does not feel cheap, instead it's heavy-duty glass and metal.

Great for MFT. Quality images and build. Not the best investment.
2 January 2018

I worked with a local company who uses SLR Magic lenses. They seemed good enough so I went ahead and bought some. I definitely think they are good quality lenses that produce nice images.Like many have said, the lens is not sharp wide open, but that is to be expected. Stop down a little and it is a great 50mm lens for mft. Very sharp. Great for interviews. Smooth focus and aperture, what more can you ask for?I think they’re the best mft cine lenses in the price range. I haven’t used any of the new rokinons, but I did not like the color out of the older ones.Overall I think this lens is a great native lens to have. It’s just not the best investment in my option because it’s mft. The nicest camera you can put it on is a GH5. Getting EF rokinons and using an adapter is probablh a better investment, but I got the SLR Magic’s on sale and used so I think I’ll hold on to them.

Love the 2595MFT !!!
21 August 2013

Within hours of receiving my 25mm T0.95 MFT lens, I had an outdoor evening concert to shoot. I handheld the whole shoot and used no flash. As the light dwindled, I continued to get sharp shot after sharp shot of the audience, something I just could never achieve with my previously-fastest lens, not for lack of trying. I love it! I am looking forward to lots of fun shooting with this lens. This lens, even though it's quite compact, is also quite heavy. It's clear that the lens is metal and glass throughout, and lots of both. It feels substantial.I only have two 'complaints' so far, and they are more suggestions for the future... the direction that I hope MFT will go as a camera system.First, manual focusing will take some getting used to again, back to my ... MoreWithin hours of receiving my 25mm T0.95 MFT lens, I had an outdoor evening concert to shoot. It feels substantial.I only have two 'complaints' so far, and they are more suggestions for the future... the direction that I hope MFT will go as a camera system.First, manual focusing will take some getting used to again, back to my pre-autofocus days, and I hope future MFT camera bodies can make this step a little easier when using manual lenses on digital bodies. Not a reflection on the lens at all, but the camera I'm using it on (an OMD E-M5).Second, I do wish the lens had just enough electronics to report its 'stats' to the camera, so that real f-stop and focal length info could get recorded in each image's metadata, and so that you could see what f-stop you're shooting without taking the camera down from your face. Like I said: wish list for the future.None of that, though, detracts from the fact that this a GREAT lens. I recommend it enthusiastically!!! It's one of those lenses that establishes an immediate connection between you and your subjects in a way few other lenses do!

My favorite lens for BMPCC4K
30 September 2021

I have 8 different lenses that I love for my two BMPCC4K, but this one...This one, I bought it two times ! (for stereoscopic purpose). Its heavy bright, sharp, smooth rings, perfect course for my need, very few chroma aberation and distortion, not too big, and usable even at 0.95 without fxs or problem...If you can have it with a discount, it's even not too expensive...Show me a challenger !

Not irreproachable
26 October 2020

I own the 25mm T0.95 and the 50mm T0.95 for M43, both fantastic: well made, with a beautiful bokeh (and I realize why these lenses have the name magic in it), a little heavy, but I wanted to get the 35mm too. I received it yesterday. What can I say? first, it is longer than the 50mm, and weight the same: bigger and heavy. The rendering is just gorgeous, and the sharpness at full aperture is better than both the 25 and the 50. It is perfectly usable fully open; the bokeh is just dreamy and is the main reason why I love these lenses. But I have three concerns: first, the integrated hood is extremely tight and difficult to extend, the screw in metal lens cap is not practical at all and the most important, the focus ring is lousy mounted, imprecise (there are at leat ... MoreI own the 25mm T0.95 and the 50mm T0.95 for M43, both fantastic: well made, with a beautiful bokeh (and I realize why these lenses have the name magic in it), a little heavy, but I wanted to get the 35mm too. So, optically, a must have. Mecanically, not very good, while both the 25 and the 50 are just irreproachable. A little bit disappointed.

Unique lens for video, average at best for stills
14 May 2017

The first lens I bought had a defective focus ring. B&H exchanged it for the same lens without any issues. I have used on several video shoots paired with the Panasonic GH4. It has a distinctive shallow look to it that's missing from a lot of native M4/3 glass. Open it up from F2.0 down and you have a pretty good imitation of bigger sensor DSLRs. The focus barrel is smooth without being too sticky and stopless F-stop ring is a nice touch, although most of us will likely use ND filters to control exposure anyway. Very sharp from F2.0 on up. So it's definitely a great budget option for anyone looking for ultra-fast 50mm equivalent M4/3 video lens. Stills, on the other hand, is a different story. The mediocre bouquet is much more pronounced in stills than in video ... MoreThe first lens I bought had a defective focus ring. B&H exchanged it for the same lens without any issues. The mediocre bouquet is much more pronounced in stills than in video where it's less of an issue and manual focusing is too difficult. Honestly the cheapo Panasonic 25mm 1.7 lens is far more usable and attractive for stills than the SLR Magic. But then again, I think this is marketed primarily towards video shooters so there's no need to complain about the stills operation. All in all, recommended for video only.

Works perfectly.
3 October 2019

Using it on my original BMPCC and it works really well. There is only one downside (and it doesn't even really have to do with the lens itself) but it is that the crop factor coming from the sensor turns this 25mm into what is basically 55mm.Other than that, the bokeh is very pretty. The focus ring and aperture are both nice and smooth to use, but I wouldn't suggest going lower than 1.4 (unless you have to) as the image starts to get a little soft and it might be a bit more difficult to pull focus then.All-in-all, this is an awesome lens and I really recommend it!
