I’ve had this helmet about three years now. Overall, it’s been a good helmet but I won’t buy another. First off, sizing runs small. I often wear a beanie or balaclava under my helmet. I should be squarely in the middle of a size medium but I have to open the BOA all the way to don’t a very thin merino wool beanie under. Second, Smith needs to re-think how the liner attaches. It doesn’t attach at all in the back and if you pull your hair up or wear a beanie in tends to bunch up making the sizing issue worse. This is probably my biggest complaint. I’ve looked at MIPS helmets from other manufacturers and all of them have a more secure liner attachment. Third, the two different plastic materials will discolor differently as the helmet ages. To me, that’s not a big deal and it suggests it’s time to start thinking about replacement. Last, goggle retention is mediocre. Other manufacturers have a little more ‘lip’ molded into the helmet to help keep the goggles from sliding off when you pull them up. Everything else is pretty good but all helmets at this price have good ventilation and decent audio compatibility. Again, it’s a good helmet but there are better options.

I was looking for a new helmet and the Vantage had everything. #1-Ventilation, the Vantage has two separate vent levers and they both have two settings, open, half and closed. So you have lots of different settings for your needs and they are easy to operate. #2-MIPS and Koyroid, safe and light nuff said. #3-Removable ear pads for spring time. Kind of tricky due to BOA wire, but you can get it done. #4 BOA fit dial for perfect size. #5- Mini visor for just enough coverage and perfect fit with Smith goggles. The terra matte color is a little strange, but so am I. Couldn't pass on the great price. Very happy with helmet.

I might be the only one that would bring this up but helmet fit is really important to me in my sporting activities.

Great with a few minor tweaks. . .
2 April 2024

I had some initial trepidation when I first test-fit this in my living room. I felt that the chin strap was too far rearward, to the point of being uncomfortable - I seriously considered a return. I gave it a field test and the fit seemed to break in and this became a non-issue.I very much like the MIPS and ventilation features. I also really like how light the helmet is. Huge plus!I am not a huge fan of the ear pieces - they could be made of a softer material and over the first few days of use I developed a hot spot on the tops of my ears. This seemed to fix itself over time, but for the price I expected a better fit out of the box.A note to Smith on colors: It seems ridiculous that the 'mens' colors are all 'manly' and the women's colors offer cool shades of ... MoreI had some initial trepidation when I first test-fit this in my living room. If they are materially the same, please don't insult me by thinking that because I am a man or woman I like certain colors - just offer them all under the same category. On the same note, I get that some colors are more popular, but as someone who participates in both search-and-rescue and backcountry sports, I really want people to wear colors OTHER than dark colors like black. Where are the BRIGHT PINKS and YELLOWS or maybe BRIGHT GREENS that will allow someone to find me when I'm either stuck out in the wilderness or mingling with my buds in the lift line?

Incredible helmet!
7 February 2024

This is easily the best helmet for skiing/snowboarding I’ve ever put on my head! Fits flawlessly with Smith goggles, has incredible ventilation (or no ventilation, as desired), looks rad, and, best of all, I never think about it on my head. I ended up grabbing a Large, even though my head measures inside the upper range for a medium, and the Large fits perfectly. I normally wear a 7 1/4 or 7 3/8 fitted baseball hat(depending on manufacturer). I ended up liking this helmet so much, I went to REI(because I bought mine with a pro deal, thanks to Smith for supporting the military!) and bought two more, one for for my wife and son. Can’t recommend this helmet highly enough. Happy shredding y’all!!

Remove the ear pads
2 April 2024

Very nice helmet. I have a more oval shaped head, and the XL fit kinda snug. Just room for a thin balaclava, so it really wasn't really warm enough below about 15 degrees F. I skied with this all season and finally, this spring I removed the ear pads for a warm day, and WOW, the whole helmet fit way better and there's now room for a much thicker balaclava! The problem is the connecting piece of fabric along the back of the neck that holds the ear pads together. It's made out of 2 or more layers of very thick foam-backed fabric. It takes up a lot of room, and really screws up the fit of the whole helmet for me. Next stop: I will cut up the ear pieces so they are just two separate ear pads. Not the most elegant solution, but I see now that it is absolutely necessary. ... MoreVery nice helmet. I have a more oval shaped head, and the XL fit kinda snug. I took one star off just for that, it screws up my fit so much.

The Vantage is the best
7 February 2024

The Vantage is the best helmet ever. Comfortable, safe, sturdy and reliable. My back story - I crashed in December, basically sliding out and landing with direct impact on the top of my head above my left eye. I was knocked out. Taken to the hospital, CT scan, EKG, the whole assessment. The top of my older Vantage broke off and the interior cellular matrix was crushed and the helmet rim broken. Very serious to say the least. The helmet was totaled but I fortunately was unhurt. I credit the Vantage for doing its job in saving me from serious injury.I immediately ordered another Vantage because of my experience. There was no other choice from my perspective. As a full time ski coach, I highly recommend the Vantage to my clients and, frankly, to anyone who’ll listen!

The size chart is inaccurate!!
22 January 2024

Only three stars because, while it has good ventilation, the vents don't close well enough for super cold temperatures. Also, the size chart is way off! I measured my head multiple times in ways and never ended up past the medium range according to the size chart. But when I got the helmet, I had to return it and get the next size up. I read all the reviews that said it's frequently undersized. But when they post a size chart on the product page I felt like I'd have less recourse in the matter if I don't actually follow the manufacturer information that expressly posted with the product. Considering the price that this helmet fetches. I was really disappointed with the experience of trying to purchase one online.

Uncomfortable Due To Poor Padding in the Forehead
16 April 2024

95% of the helmet was exceptional, but very uncomfortable in the forehead area. The padding is rather thin and did not extend past the thin plastic that is used for the MIPS system. As a result, the plastic definitely cuts into the forehead area and is very uncomfortable after a while. At best, with extended use the plastic thin plastic pieces will hurt even more as the lining wears. My son and each bought this helmet and we had exactly the same issue. The helmet is relatively expensive and has a lot of great features. Unfortunately, comfort is not one of them. The lining should be an easy fix and hopefully Smith will correct this on future revisions.

Vantage MIPS - Protection where you need it most
15 February 2024

I picked up this helmet before the season began because I wanted something with MIPS technology and I have always heard great things about the Smith Vantage line. That opinion did not disappoint - this thing is perfect, whether you're hitting lines in the resort or out backcountry touring, this helmet is perfect for anyone's needs. It is light, breathable with the built-in ventilation on the helmet, and can easily be layered with insulating headwear like a balaclava or beanie underneath. The comfort of the helmet is instantly apparent - after putting it on, whether it's under insulating headwear or directly on my head, I don't know it's there the rest of the day. It easily adjusted to my head and the fit, while I was not sure I had the right size at first after measuring at home pre-purchase, ended up being true to size. When I first tried it on out of the box, I was afraid wearing headwear may make it too tight - I'm so happy to be proven wrong.Where I really appreciate the helmet the most, however, is for its protection - MIPS technology really is incredible for reducing TBI in the outdoor setting. I say that with firsthand experience from some pretty steep falls and as someone who works in healthcare. I have had some impacts while wearing the helmet - tree branches while whipping off-piste and banging on large bumps after falls on 30-degree slopes. Even after getting pushed and with the above falls/collisions, it also still looks fantastic. This helmet really holds up and lets you push yourself while being comfortable, warm, and - most of all - protecting your head.
