Still going strong after 5 years! My Sonos PLAY:1 system delivers amazing sound that truly immerses you, like you're right in the middle of the action. I use them every single day and they haven't let me down yet. While they don't have Bluetooth (which might be a con for some, but I honestly didn't even remember that they don't have Bluetooth), the sound quality and durability are definitely worth it, especially for the price. Love them!! I would definitely recommend these speakers and the whole system.

When my husband decided to put a sound system in our house he did lots of research. These So os speakers came up highly recommended every single time. The speakers are small and unobtrusive in your decor. They help so much when watching movies. And, when you have dance party nights these are unbelievable in sound. They are also wireless and portable, so you can even take them outside. The Sonos app is so wonderful and easy to use. Highly recommend for a top notch sound system.

The sound is quite good for these speakers, and they work well as the rear speakers of a surround sound setup. Generally I've been very happy with them. However, I had one suddenly die, and after jumping through a bunch of hoops with their support department, they sent me a new one, and I sent in the old one. What was disappointing is that the out-of-warranty repair costs was almost the same as buying a new one on sale in a store. I've also been disappointed in business practices of Sonos, as after having them for a few years, the terms for using their equipment changed so they could collect usage information. More recently, they have updated their speakers, including a new app, which is not compatible with this generation of speakers, so I can either replace all my speakers, or am constantly nagged within the original app to upgrade to the new app, which doesn't support these speakers. The distributed audio functionality has been generally good, but these speakers drop off the network too often, but my overall experience of Sonos has been disappointing, and I'll likely look towards alternatives when I'm to next consider audio products.

The Sonos Play 1 has been a game-changer for me. This little speaker is like a tiny powerhouse, delivering sound so rich and full that it feels like I have a live band in my living room. Setting it up was super easy, and it connects to all my favorite music services seamlessly. I've had countless living room dance parties, and I can’t help but smile every time I turn it on. It's definitely a bit of an investment, but honestly, it's worth every penny for the joy it brings.

Awfully puny sound compared to others I've had.  All wifi speakers evidently have their problems.
4 March 2023

After having another brand of wifi speakers for several years I bought what I thought would be an improvement at the high Sonos price point.  The sound is not nearly as full as my Definitive speakers, but they are compatible with Apple music, which Definitive is not, and was my main reason for this change.  Super disappointed in the quality of the sound.    I'll literally need twice as many speakers as I had before to fill my living room with sound. I may send them back, in fact.  Too expensive for such puny sound, especially when I would need so many.  I have a bluetooth speaker (another brand) that Ive compared to the Sonos speaker in the same room, and there is no comparison- the bluetooth speaker beats the Sonos by a mile.

When I bought my Sonos Play:1 speakers in 2017, I could play songs stored on my iPhone using the Sonos app, which was what I wanted and was great! However fast-forward 2 years, this feature was disabled and I no longer have the choice to listen to my phone playlists on the speakers. This is really disappointing and I feel shortchanged because without this the product is useless to me, as I am not interested in paying a monthly subscription to a music streaming service like Apple Music, which is the only option that I'm left with. If the speakers never had this capability, I would not have purchased them in the first place. They are not Bluetooth compatible which means you cannot play songs straight from YouTube, etc. Also other family members cannot connect their phones and devices to the speakers to play songs which is easily possible with other speakers. And as mentioned, you now cannot even listen to playlists downloaded on your phone which is a shame. There are also issues with tracks skipping while playing which many people have complained about many times but a solution is yet to be provided.

This is our 3rd Sonos Play One and this is part of our integrated system that has three Play Ones, a Play 3 and a Play 5 with a Sonos Media hub pipping music through my home audio system. The Play one is well designed with high quality plastic and metal mesh grill. The speaker itself can be mounted on the wall or on a speaker stand. You can also elevate your speaker with a desktop stand if you choose so as placement option is limitless as long as you have an AC outlet near by. Audio quality for such a small mono 2-way speaker is surprisingly full. The highs and mid are crystal clear and the bass even thumps against a wall placement. As small as this little speaker measures the amount of high quality audio shines through with flying color. Using the TruPlay feature you can set up your speaker system that matches the acoustics of your room. While this usually gets you the best sound quality, increase both the treble and bass settings will yield to ultimately better sound with Loudness turned on which is by default. The speaker is not without faults but then again I am being very nick picky here. At higher volume the DSP will decrease bass response and sometimes this can lead to an undesired effect and cause some harshness to the sound. But this happens when you either turn the volume pass 80% or have the bass EQ level all the way up. The Play One is suitable for an office, bedroom and even a bathroom. For more volume and bass you should step up to either a Play 3 (no longer available) or a Play 5. The play 5 will play loud, loud enough for a large pool party!

That scene inspired us to build a speakers into our home 20+ years ago. Walk into the house, turn on the stereo ..."total sound". While that was at least a laudable goal, even some of best speakers that we installed decades back in response to the concept were mismatched, omni-directional, and in retrospect, quite flat sounding. Flash forward those same decades and there is simply a revolutionary concept, "Sonos", designed so that one couple-hundred-dollar, table-top wireless speaker, about the size of a coffee can, will fill a room with omni-directional, full bodied, base-balanced, "total sound". We achieved "total sound" from our last effort, but are now bearing the construction cost of ripping out (and patching the walls to remove) "old technology" in favor of a handful of new tabletop Sonos Play 1 speakers. We are finding it well worth the cost to do so. Buy a Sonos Play 1 speaker. It won't be your last. The cost is quite reasonable, until you budget for the cost or removing ancient technology. Even then, it's worth the price. Often, bigger is better, but that's not necessarily true with Sonos products.. The company offers its PLAY 1 ,3, 5 and soundbar series. We've now tried most and are perfectly happy with the Sonos PLAY 1. Try one before you get carried away with anything else en route to "total sound".

Sonos PLAY:1, the best small wireless hi-fi speaker on the market.

I have multiple pairs of Sonos PLAY:1 speakers in my house. They are astonishingly powerful for their size, have tremendous base response, for their size, and with every software update that Sonos issues, get better and better. The PLAY:1 can operate as a stand alone mono speaker, however it really shines when you purchase two and use them as a L+R stereo pair. Assuming that you are using an iOS device, like an iPhone or iPad, you can use Sonos' TruePlay tuning system to not only take two of these little gems and make them a stereo pair, but TruePlay will "sense" the location of the speakers, relative to the environment of the room they are located in and make digital signal processing adjustments to maximize the clarity and tone of the music that comes from these ... MoreI have multiple pairs of Sonos PLAY:1 speakers in my house. I have a pair of PLAY:1s in a child's bedroom, they are sitting on a carpeted floor behind some furniture and TruePlay seems to have compensated for these speakers being located in not optimal locations. The audio is clear, bright and bass response remains excellent.Sonos isn't a stand-alone Bluetooth speaker. You aren't going to purchase one of these speakers and connect it to your phone to play music in your kitchen. When you purchase Sonos you are buying into an audio ecosystem which is almost infinity expandable and self-managing. Sonos requires that you have either a Wi-Fi Network, or you can create a SonosNet by purchasing a Sonos Boost and letting Sonos create its own mesh network separate from your home's Wi-Fi netowrk. You can continue to add Sonos devices long after your first purchase, and Sonos devices sold many years ago are compatible with the newest of devices they offer today (there are some limitations with the older Sonos remote control hardware). Sonos provides access to many audio sources. If you have a large audio collection on your computer, you will need to install the Sonos computer software to allow Sonos access to your audio collection. If you subscribe to a streaming service like Spotify, SiriusXM, Apple Music, Pandora, etc., those services have "apps" available from inside the Sonos control software which you can add to the control software so that Sonos can access that streaming source.Setup is super easy. The Sonos software for iOS and Android (no TruePlay tuning) walks you through an initial installation and adding any additional devices to an established Sonos system. The PLAY:1 can also be used as a satellite speaker for the Sonos Playbar home theater's 5.1 capabilities. You can also pair a Sonos Sub with a pair of PLAY:1s to increase the bass response of a PLAY:1 setup in any particular room. The fit and finish of these little speakers is excellent. They are physically very heavy, and the grill and plastics on the exterior have excellent finish work, smooth corners and edges. They are a plug in only application and require being plugged into a wall outlet or surge strip and powered on all the time. They are not battery powered.Remember, when purchasing Sonos, you are buying into a wireless home audio ecosystem, not a single purchase of a portable speaker. The PLAY:1s may be small, but they are not portable and not meant to be used in portable situations. You must have a home network to operate Sonos. The home network needs to be Wi-Fi wireless to support Sonos on Wi-Fi, or you must purchase a Boost to connect to your wired home network to create a stand-along SonosNet (I prefer to run SonosNet through a Boost rather than having the Sonos speakers on my Wi-Fi network). If you have a large digital audio collection you want to play over Sonos, you must have that collection on a comptuer that is on your network and always running or on a home media server that is always running. Sonos supports just about all streaming audio services imaginable.I love my Sonos!

[Rewarded Review] Hands-down best sound, limited flexibility
12 August 2017

This was my first dabbling in wireless speakers - I wanted something that sounded good at low volume (because I'm living in an apartment), didn't create a rats-nest of wires, and could be expanded into a more full set of speakers once I move out into a house.Note: I bought one speaker, liked it, then bought a second a day later to try it in stereo pair. You should definitely plan on buying two at some point, if not right away, because having two makes a huge difference in sound quality. I know that's obvious, but I think it's important to stress due to the price tag - these speakers only really shine once they are in a pair (and that's a $400 investment).First let me say, these speakers sound amazing. I know that's obvious, but I think it's important to stress due to the price tag - these speakers only really shine once they are in a pair (and that's a $400 investment).First let me say, these speakers sound amazing. Crystal clear sound (bass too!), even at very low volume. They can get extremely loud as well, I've never turned them up past half-way because at that point the room is filled and my neighbors are probably putting in earplugs. After comparing these to other wifi speakers, I'm entirely convinced that they are the best sounding. They're also criminally easy to setup, and the packaging is great. Now as to why this is 4 and not 5 stars. The Sonos app (iOS) is actually really neat and connects to Pandora, TuneIn, Spotify and my music on device, which is great. It also has a queue feature which lets other people on my wifi to queue up songs to play next, which has been fun during parties. But not having native Bluetooth/AirPlay support has been more disappointing than I original thought it'd be. So many times I'll be watching a video on YouTube and think "Man, I'd love to hear this through my Sonos speakers right now". The bass is so clear and powerful that I'm also constantly wishing I could hook these up to my Desktop via a line-in to play FPS games too, which sadly I cannot. I've gotten over it now, but there was a lull a couple weeks after I got them where I really wanted to use them for everything, but couldn't.These speakers are meant for listening to music at the home, and they do that job great. You'll love the sound and the features the app brings to parties, but trust me when I say they'll leave you wanting more flexibility as well. Now, one thing worth mentioning is that I was torn between these speakers and the Bose SoundTouch 10 (or whatever the comparable model is). These speakers sounded and looked way better, but the SoundTouch had Airplay, Bluetooth and I think line-in. What pushed me to get these is that I also plan to get a new soundbar for my living room to replace the garbage one I'm using now, and I wanted to use the speakers I purchased as satellite speakers for surround. The Bose SoundTouch 10s don't connect to their sound bar product, but the Play:1s do connect to the PlayBar/PlayBase. I plan on purchasing the SoundBase at the end of the year and hooking that up into my living room at some point. Then I'll have an optical-in and can start using it with my desktop/TV for gaming and YouTube. Oh how that'll be nice :)
