Airplay 2, Bluetooth, wireless and usb c charging!

Also, it’s a great addition to an Apple TV if your TV’s audio isn’t that good. It’s not surround sound obviously, but makes TV audio much better. Finally, the battery life has been good, and easily lives up to the rating that Sonos give of 10 hours (I’ve probably got a good 12-13 hours of playback on one charge). The added bonus that makes it reallly flexible, is that the Roam is water resistance rated, which makes it perfect for a bathroom speaker where you can’t get a power supply.Really happy with richer sounds service as ever, a free 6 year warranty is excellent, and I also had next day delivery with DPD so I was very happy with this.If you also join the Richer Sounds VIP club, you’ll get another £10 off if this is your first time buying from them. This probably sounds like I work for Richer Sounds, but I promise this is a genuine review!

I had intended to use it as a PC / desk speaker some of the time, then move it to other rooms on the house or the garden as required. However, the Bluetooth interfernce around my desk area is just too much for reliable connection or sound from my PC. I have no issues ith Airplay streaming in that area. I've used bluetooth headphones in the same area without any connection issues, so I assume this is an issue specific to the Roam.

With the Sonos app, I was able to connect and control all my Sonos speakers effortlessly, creating a multi-room listening experience. The ability to have synchronized music playing throughout my home and then seamlessly transition to the portable Roam as I stepped outside was truly impressive.Additionally, the battery life on the Sonos SL Roam is excellent. It lasted for hours on end, allowing me to enjoy uninterrupted music without worrying about recharging frequently. When I did need to charge it, the USB-C charging port made it quick and convenient.Overall, I highly recommend the Sonos SL Roam to anyone in search of a portable Bluetooth speaker for outdoor use. Fantastic little speaker

The Roam SL is a great addition to your existing Sonos setup. If you already have any other Sonos gear, the Roam SL lets you add another zone inside or outside your home with no wires at all. It's also very water resistant which means you don't have to worry about it betting rained on or splashed. It's far more water resistant than most other speakers that claim to be ready for outdoor action. The Roam is good to be submersed in 3 feet of water for 30 minutes without damage.Where to start... Sound quality is amazing especially considering that the speaker is about the size of a 16-ounce beer can. Battery life is fantastic, I am getting 8 hours or more at 50% volume. It's never actually run out of juice for me, so I don't know how long it will absolutely last. Easy setup - if you already have a Sonos account all you have to do to set it up is turn it on and run the app on your phone. The speaker automatically shows up and the app walks you through setup. Took me literally less than 5 minutes.Besides this Roam SL, I also have a Roam. The difference is that the Roam has built-in smarts and can be controlled by Amazon Alexa or Google Home. The Roam and Roam SL can be configured as a stereo pair and Alexa will control them both in that case. That is what I do sometimes, the stereo pair sounds great and really expands the sound.I use my Roam pair outside on my deck and by my pool, and also use them inside my house in my dining room where they sit unobtrusively and where there is no convenient electrical outlet to use something like a Sonos One that needs to be plugged in or a Move which is portable but quite large.Overall, I really love the Roam and Roam SL. I also really love Sonos equipment. This Roam SL is the 12th Sonos device I've added to my home. It all sounds great, and it all "just works". Can't recommend it enough.

Fundamentally flawed

I bought this to play the radio and music through from my phone, which it does very well when it actually works. I wanted a battery version because the places I wanted to use it were not near a socket. The reason I find it next to useless is that it switches itself off after a while, so that to access it again you have to move to the speaker and press the (not very easy to use) button on the back. This is the case even when it is described as in Sleep mode. I had foolishly assumed that the term 'Sleep' meant that it could actually be woken up, but this is not the case except by pushing the button on the back. I kept playing around with it, assuming that no one could design a product that you couldn't play sound to, without actually walking over to it (or getting out of bed) to switch the thing on. This was totally unexpected, since my other Sonos speakers can be woken up and played to directly when they are in Standby mode.I feel doubly cross about this, because I actually bought 2 of the wretched things which I could use as a stereo pair. I realise that if they remain on standby the battery would not last as long, but could this feature not at least be provided as an option for those who value convenience over battery life? Something for a firmware update in the very near future?Having said all that, once you do get the speakers working they are very good for their size.

Looks good - with limitations

I've got several Sonos products and wanted a mobile speaker I could use on my balcony etc that could be on the same network as my other Sonos products. To be honest , the connectivity isn't great, the Sonos app generally says it's 'Powered off' when it's actually on and playing music. Also the connection/link with my Sonos amp, Era speakers and Sonos control app can be quite tricky, if not impossible on occasions. The battery life could be better for the size of the unit. It's seems to charged quite quickly though, which is good. I like the fact it can be used either horizontally or stood up on its end. Most importantly, it has quite a well balanced sound frequency. The speaker looks good, the build is fine, albeit plasticky. Doesn't feel the same quality as similar speakers by other brands (I still use the superb Bose Soundlink Mini II over the Sonos Roam, if I just want a speaker connected to my phone or tablet which has an amazing battery life). I hope this doesn't sound too negative, I'm happy with the speaker, just not over the moon. I think if you have Sonos products already, then this is the obvious and sensible option/choice, but if you're just looking for a small, well built and powerful mobile speaker, go for a Bose or Marshall.

A precision grill wraps around 1/3rds of the speaker body providing a clean look that will blend in any environment. The buttons at the top are clearly labeled, though you’ll need to be aware of the button “shortcuts” for things like moving to the next or previous track. One of the lengthwise faces have rubber feet and the base of speaker has a nice rubber material. The base also has magnets and wireless charging built in for the additional charging station that they sell. The pair/power button along with the USB-C power is located on the back side for wired charging. Based on Sonos specs the Roam is IP67 water and dust resistant which means you can take it to the beach or use it in the shower without worry. They also claim that it's shockproof which I can attest to as I have accidently dropped it more than a couple times. Around the house I regularly got about 8 hours of battery life and I tended to use the speaker at higher volumes. Inside Sonos has 1 tweeter and 1 midwoofer pair with 2 Class H amps, which provide a solid performance (more on this later).VERSATILITYAs the name implies, there are a number of ways that you can utilize the Roam.In the home: When the Roam is in range of your WiFi it integrates beautifully with your existing Sonos system, but there are several configurations to consider:- One Roam in its own room: Roam fits perfectly in a small room like a laundry room or closet where sound from your existing Sonos speakers might not reach.- “Roaming” around the house: If you’re working on things around the house, but don’t want music playing everywhere you can carry the Roam as you move from room to room.- In a flexible stereo pair: If you have more than one Roam, you can group them into their own room and utilize them as a stereo pair. If one of these Roams features microphones, you can still use those microphones to control the pair. With the Roams in a stereo pair you can use them statically in a medium size room or keep them available to take into the backyard when the family is hanging outside assuming you're within WiFi range.- Rear speakers for 5.1 stereo: If you have a Ray/Beam you can utilize the Roams as rear satellite speakers. The Roams are perfect for a small/medium sized living room to add some additional fullness. On the go: When you’re going on a hike, a trip to the lake, or the beach you can toss the Roam in your backpack and use it in Bluetooth mode. In this mode it functions like any other Bluetooth speaker and sounds great. When you’re away from your house and out of range of WiFi, it will automatically connect to your pair device when powered on.SETUP AND SOUNDThe setup as with the other Sonos products I own is super simple. You power on the unit and a pop up in the Sonos app automatically prompts you to setup the Roam SL. Once you give it a name you can connect it to your WiFi and get it updates. The Roam SL sounds great for the size of the speaker with clear highs and room filling mids. The low end does struggle a little bit and given the size of the speaker you are prioritizing “loudness” over room filling bass. That being said, I personally tweaked the EQ to add a little bit more to the low side and that helped fill out the sound tremendously. An important note is that with the lack of microphones you do miss out on automatic TruePlay, so if you plan on keeping your Roam in the same room/location I recommend running it with your iPhone as it does make a difference. As with everything else in the Sonos ecosystem you can play music from basically any music service you can think of with ease. I’ve also been trying our Sonos’ own Radio stations and found them to be solid curated playlists when I’m not sure what I am in the mood for.

Nice little speaker, but lacking oomph!
24 February 2023

First things first: this is a visually attractive speaker that's very compact. Great for travel, or just moving around the house or garden. It's also a nice sounding speaker and has quite a rich sound quality bearing in mind its size. The speaker can be connected via Bluetooth or WiFi. However, if you use WiFi you have to download the Sonos app, which I found a bit fiddly to set up and took a while because the system also downloaded a firmware update for the speaker. Once set up, it's quite simple to use. But beware: if you want to use WiFi, you'll need to set up or connect a third party app, such as SoundCloud, to play music. Not great for someone like me who can't be bothered with technology and would rather just turn it on and play something. There are some ... MoreFirst things first: this is a visually attractive speaker that's very compact. Once you crank up the volume, the bass struggles a bit and you get distortion. I haven't used it outdoors yet, but don't think the sound will carry too well. And finally, some praise for Diego at the Liverpool store who spent quite a long time advising me over the phone before I decided which speaker to buy. 5 stars for the service!

Portable, Durable, Delivers a lot of Sound!
10 November 2022

This speaker is a great option for someone who wants a less expensive entry point into the SONOS ecosystem or a great way of expanding your SONOS system with a portable solution. Its basically the exact same speaker as the slightly more expensive ROAM but lacks a microphone for voice assistants.Sound quality is very good on SONOS products and the ROAM SL is no different where its very clear and crisp with all types of music from rock to hip hop to electronica. The sound signature out of the box is not overly bass heavy nor does it deliver an excessive about of treble however I found the vocals with all types of music to be quite pronounced. You can adjust the sound signature with a basic EQ (just bass and treble) to get something more to your liking. You can adjust the sound signature with a basic EQ (just bass and treble) to get something more to your liking. With increasing the low-end, the bass response is OK but can be a little muddled with deep lows, so if you’re looking for a “bumping” speaker you may want to consider something different. The amount of sound this can produce though is pretty amazing where it was easily able to fill both my kitchen and living room with clear and crisp sound at higher volumes. Another thing that’s amazing about this speaker is although the speaker points in just one direction, there’s a surprising amount of sound that can be heard even from the back of the speaker if it were facing away from you. So you could certainly put this in the center of a room to have sound in all directions. The build quality is top notch just like all SONOS products and this speaker is solid all the way around. It lacks any sort of rubber/silicone bumpers though so it’s not something that can just be thrown around but seems like it will hold up well over time. It has an IPx7 water resistant rating and an IP6x dust resistance rating so it can certainly be used around the pool without worrying or even a camping trip. One thing I really like about this speaker is that it comes with a nice, long charging cable (46 inches) which is something you don’t see too often so you’ll have some flexibility there in terms of listening while charging. You can certainly find other bluetooth speakers in this price range that can produce louder sound as well as equivalent sounding speakers for a little less money, however what makes this speaker great of course is the SONOS integration where the speaker can be linked with the SONOS app which will allow it to be accessed from your home network. The setup process is a little more involved than a typical bluetooth speaker but it should just take about 5 minutes within the app. The unfortunate thing though is that it does not appear that you can add this speaker to a Google Home speaker group which is the same as my other SONOS products I own.

Sonos Portable Speaker option
12 November 2022

The Sonos Rome SL is a wireless portable speaker that integrates with your Sonos system. The speaker itself is a small triangular form factor that can be used vertically or horizontally. The speaker measures 6.61 in (168 mm) H x 2.44 in (62 mm) W x 2.36 in (60 mm) D and weighs 0.95 lb (0.43 kg). The speaker can charge wirelessly with the Sonos wireless pad (or other QI wireless pad) or by USB C with the included charging cord. Sonos claims 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge when listening at moderate volumes. The Roam SL will automatically switch into sleep mode to conserve power lasting up to 10 days. The speaker takes about 2 hours to fully recharge on USB or 4 hours wirelessly. The speaker takes about 2 hours to fully recharge on USB or 4 hours wirelessly. This speaker is well suited for outdoor use, the IP 67 rating means it is water and dust resistant and can theoretically be submerged in water for up to 30 minutes without damage. The speaker has siliconized ends and control buttons and a cloth like material covering the rest of the speaker. The finish looks good and appears durable.Volume and play pause buttons are on one end and the USB C power port and power/Bluetooth button are on the back.Sound is supplied by one tweeter and one mid/woofer giving good sound for a speaker this size. Sonos has tuned this speaker well and I was surprised with the base although it is limited. The on boarding is performed using the Sonos app on your smartphone. The app allows you to connect the speaker to your WiFi and adjust the settings on the speaker and shows how much battery charge is left. If you have other Sonos speakers set up you just add the Roam SL. You can group or stereo pair Sonos speakers and play content from Sonos Radio and other streaming services. The Sonos ecosystem is great for whole home sound and this speaker is a great portable addition if you have a Sonos system. It can be used solo and sounds great but there are less expensive alternatives if you are just looking for a portable speaker.
