I've been searching for a prime lens that would give me an angle of view that would work for travel photography for both street and interior use and also for close-up (but not macro) work. This lens is right on the mark for the focal length I was looking for on an crop sensor camera. I test drove it at an arboretum on an overcast day so I could get an idea of how it would perform indoors without flash, hand held. I was very happy with the quality of the photos and the color pop from the flowers was outstanding. The sharpness on the lens I got is excellent and when I processed the raw images in Lightroom, the lens correction was minimal if at all. Wide open gave me a sufficiently shallow depth of field and great bokeh. By the way, the lens held 90% of its value upon selling it.

After reading some glowing praises about this lens from other NEX owners, I decided to bite the bullet and try this thing out on my NEX 7. What are my thoughts?The Good:The fit and finish of the Zeiss is superb. I was quite surprised how compact it actually is (without hood of course). Also, this lens is one of the sharper wide-angles I've ever tested and the corner sharpness wide open and stopped down is quite good. The Zeiss is suited well for nighttime photography, not only the sharpness but the deeper depth-of field associated with wide-angles compared to more normal focal length, fast lenses, so that more of your subject would actually be in focus. Although this is already corrected in-camera, let's just say Sony's JPEG engine is not the best in the world. This means I need to resort to processing my RAW files in Adobe Camera Raw. The lateral chromatic aberration can be fixed in Lightroom/Photoshop but you never totally get rid of it.One surprising thing I noticed is that this Zeiss has bit of focus shift. One note: NEX lenses autofocuses with the lens aperture wide-open. My wide-open shots were accurate but my other shots when the lens is stopped down had a bit of backfocus.I do wish this lens had image stabilization (or at least I wish my camera had in-body stabilization). I was more than fine when shooting stills, but when I it came to video, I really needed a steady hand or else I would have some jittery video clips.You need to watch out when threading filters to this lens. The filter thread on this lens is slightly recessed into the barrel, so if you install a thin B+W UV filter like I did, you may have a hard time taking it out if you put the filter on too tight. I did mention that filter threading is plastic?Conclusion:In my experience, the negatives outweighed the positives, so this lens is not for me. Other people are very happy with the Zeiss but I guess I'm too picky, especially if it costs$. Looks like I'll stick with my legacy glass for the meantime. The Zeiss is great for low light and if you are willing to live with some of it's issues, more power to you.

On paper it seems over priced especially next to something like the Sigma 30mm 1.4 but after using both lenses you can tell this has a more pleasing image (for me at least) Dont get me wrong the Sigma is a Great budget lens but if you have the money this lens is really fun to shoot with and the image is noticeably crisper and cooler. It's not worth $1000 though, make sure to pick up a used one in good condition for $700ish, that price feels right for this lens. On trips I want something light this is the perfect all around focal length for me. Wide enough for landscape, architecture ect and not too much distortion for peoples faces. Unfortunately there are not a lot of videos out there to see examples (at least from a video perspective) before buying the lens which made me wonder about getting it in the first place, but I think it simply is because of the price and how inexpensive the Sigma is which you can find 100's of videos examples of. For me I'm very happy with this lens!
This lens had a learning curve for me because it lacks stabilization. I couldnt figure out why my pictures were so soft until I put it on my wifes a6000. She shoots lots of photos of our grandchildren on the fly and utilizes shutter priority, hardly ever going below 1/125 even with OSS lenses. Problem solved for me. I now shoot 1/125 indoors, and 1/160 outside unless Im going for a certain effect. Sharp pictures, great contrast, wonderful color. Dont overlook Clear Image Zoom either, as it will take this prime lens and make it into a credible 24 - 48 (36 - 72) zoom and enable you to use this lens as an all purpose one. An important consideration given its cost.

I mounted this lens on my NEX-5N with the OLED viewfinder and have used it almost exclusively since. I also have the 18-55mm, 18-200mm zooms, the 30mm macro, 16mm pancake with fisheye & wide angle converters and a few Lensbabies. I'm considering a second body for them as the Zeiss epitomizes the one Go-To lens concept. As a street lens, this combo is hard to beat. The sharpness is unsurpassed and the bokeh produces an exceptionally pleasing fine, creamy effect. This is especially noticeable with the aperature wide (or almost wide) open and the foreground subject at minimum focus (six inches). This lens will bring out all the wrinkles, dimples, etc. It's great if you're going for that effect, but maybe not ideal for family gatherings, weddings and such. Overall sharpness is best achieved at f4.0 and beyond and grain is well controlled at high ISO. For some reason, I find that I rarely use AWB with this lens. I normally use the sun, cloud or shade settings (tungsten or fluorescent when indoors). If necessary, I'll dial it in manually when the lighting is particularly tricky. I'm not sure if this is a lens or sensor effect. I find that, more and more, I'm taking this same approach with my other cameras/lenses as well. The lens is pricey at $1,000.00, but this is a classic case of getting what you pay for. Build quality is excellent and the manual focusing ring turns smooth as silk. If you're serious about the NEX system, this is money WELL spent. I'm anxious to see prints made from a Zeiss/NEX-7 combination.

I tried using it on my a6000 and was surprised at the number of shots showing unacceptable amounts of chromatic aberration in the usual places (trees), and some strange chroma effects that I have never seen before. I have a Zeiss FE 35mm f2.8 that I absolutely love on my a6000 and expected the same from this lens particularly given all the good reviews. I had only a limited amount of time with the lens, but was startled by the purple hues that appeared in shots that weren't even high contrast. I shot the face of a distant brick building that, zoomed in, showed a sort of zebra striping. Another shot of a shingled roof line against the sky showed little chroma rainbows when zoomed in 1:1. Chromatic aberration often rears its ugly head (but is easy to correct in Lightroom 4 so really just a minor nuisance). There is vignetting and reduced contrast in corners, wide open - maybe even a slight blur on the left side. (This cleans up just fine, stopped down a bit and in some cases, the Sony/Zeiss corners look better wide open than my legacy primes at their best settings!) They call it a direct drive focus ring. It feels like focus by wire to me and it takes a bit of getting used to, coming from old MF lenses. It does the job, though - as a matter of fact, I hit my target focus spot with greater accuracy than with the other 24mm lenses. (Interestingly, the old lenses also showed a surprising degree of focus shift, while the Sony/Zeiss had none.) My biggest disappointment would be with the slightly odd flare behavior with the sun in the frame. Not hideous like my old Canon zoom, but not clear like the Sigma 30mm. It's something I can live with. Overall, I am truly delighted with this lens. I bought the NEX-7 mostly to use with legacy lenses, but this is one native e-mount prime I am very glad Sony took the trouble to develop. I see they have trouble keeping these things on the shelves. I hope that encourages Sony and others to put out more high quality fast primes for e-mount.
