Really disappointed in the performance of this Soundbar, don't believe the hyped reviews. Bought with a new XR8590K TV as an upgrade to an 8 year old HTNT3 system but it doesn't even compare, there is a complete lack of punchy bass and the audio is tinny. No calibration options other than increase bass which even at max is lackluster. Contacted Sony immediately to arrange for a return and now subject to a drawn out troubleshooting process via tech department. Have been advised that unless its faulty a return wont be considered (despite shelling out $3k on a TV) so now stuck with an expensive paperweight as I'll be using my old system over this. Read multiple reviews and did research before purchasing. Very underwhelmed by this product. Design wise the bar is decent enough, simple, minimal affair. The subwoofer looks and feels cheap, as does the remote. Sound wise is where things go rapidly downhill for me. The bar is harsh sounding, all top end, hardly any mid and no bass on the bar at all. Some might say that's what the subwoofer is for...but the bar should have some lower end, because the subwoofer is awful. The bass frequencies sound "sloppy" and "slack"....I would describe the sound of both bar and sub as lacking precision. The different sound settings are simply different equaliser settings and the Immersive Audio has little or no effect. As for the Dolby Atmos aspect of this...the less said about that the better. While I knew that the speaker set up could not deliver true Dolby Atmos because there were no uprising or side speakers, the sound processing that Sony claim creates Atmos just does not register with me at all. It is certainly not immersive in any way. The bonus for me is the fact that I can stream music from other devices via Bluetooth, but that is no big deal with technology today. The sound is better for music than it is as a cinema package...but there is no disguising that awful subwoofer. Fortunately John Lewis discounted the item, but even so, I still feel like I overpaid for what I got. Happy with the service from John Lewis, as always, but this is a big let down from Sony. My advice, avoid and spend a few quid more, especially if it is Atmos you are after.

This is absolutely a terrible waste of money. I purchase this sound bar subwoofer and surround speakers from Best buy but did not buy their purchase protection so I ended up having to go through Sony for the warranty. Please do your research folks these systems cut out all the time. The subwoofer cuts out the surround comes out. A packaged it up and sent it out to New York where somebody wanted me to to get it prepared with a nice letter saying why it cuts out and when and they sent it back saying everything is fine and there's nothing wrong and that there was a tiny nick in the back corner bottom of the subwoofer so therefore all warranties are void. The cutting out of these speakers is a huge problem. So many people have had so many problems with these speakers ... MoreThis is absolutely a terrible waste of money. A truly excellent little 3.1 system. I was expecting it to be decent after listening to the floor model in the store, but after setting it up at home in my little nook, I was even further impressed at how nice it sounds in a more enclosed area. I recently moved and had to downgrade from a much larger 7.2 system because I just don't have room for wired surround sound speakers in my new space. I was expecting to just have to downgrade, suck it up and deal. Having gotten this, I don't feel like I've had to downgrade that much. It simulates Atmos surround well enough that I can still enjoy the effect, and while it certainly is not a 7.2 atmos system and will never be equal to one...I'm genuinely impressed by how well it holds up in direct comparison. Somewhat disappointed with then overall sound quality and integration with other SONY products. I thought that at this price level my new XR-77A80J OLED would be a terrific marriage. The integration is not as seamless as I had expected. The sound bar takes a while to get started even as the TV has been on for a few seconds. The same is true when the DVD player initially transmits sound, there is always a noticeable delay. Sometimes the sound and image seem to be a few microseconds off which can be dismissible, this delay maybe noticeable because I’m dealing with two separate systems. My point of reference for sound immersion is my old SONY Grand Wega, KDF-60XS955 which had 3 vertical speakers on each side of the screen and the subwoofer was integrated in the body of ... MoreSomewhat disappointed with then overall sound quality and integration with other SONY products. My point of reference for sound immersion is my old SONY Grand Wega, KDF-60XS955 which had 3 vertical speakers on each side of the screen and the subwoofer was integrated in the body of the TV. Given the bar only has 3 speaker on a horizontal plane, you don’t get the same level of sound elevation or immersion, even as SONY touts its vertical surround engine. I’ll probably extract some juice out of this one for a few months and go to the next level with the SONY HT-A9 which leverages the screen as a center speaker. Reviews on this one also seem to be lacking, so may be other brands need to be considered. It would be nice if SONY offered a subwoofer that could be paired directly with the screen of the XR OLED TV, as a the screen seems to offer reasonable sound and clarity, but lacks bass to add fullness to the sound.
I feel compelled to write this review after owning this soundbar for a year. It was a huge mistake and waste of money. Have consistently had connectivity issues through both the HDMI port and Bluetooth staying connected to either my tv/phone or laptop. I know it is the soundbar because it happens with any input device. Even still I just would reconnect. It was more of an annoyance than anything. But I have had way cheaper soundbars that didn't have the same issue. But about 6 months ago I started noticing issues with the sound itself. Like random hollow sound coming from the soundbar. Still it was intermittent. About 3 months ago, I started noticing playing even the tv or music at a moderate low level, the subwoofer would randomly make extremely LOUD booming, cracking, thumping sounds. Again, it was intermittent. Today 1 year after purchase the subwoofer does the booming/thumping/cracking thing constantly. Also for some reason the subwoofer picks up some radio station on its own, how that is possible I don't know. I still have a soundbar I paid hardly anything for almost 10 years ago that works, and yet this one I thought was supposed to be an upgrade which cost hundreds o dollars more sounds terrible and is ready for the junk pile!! My worst Best Buy purchase ever. I feel like an idiot. Buyer Beware!
Okay I purchased this earlier in the month during Prime Day, so the purchases price was feasible. After messing around with it for a couple of hours, the jury is out. It is growing on me as I tailor the sound to my liking. I compared the sound to my older Samsung 2.1 sound bar. It puts out some serious base and I love it. This one here though... I will give it a chance for the next few days. The sound is crisp. That much I will say. I am getting usd to the Vertical Surrround Engine and surround technology. I am listening to Sirius XM and the base is being heard nicely now. Does it have that theatre sound I was so hoping for? I don't know. Best Buy implored me to go with a Sony product to pair with my Sony Bravia. So it makes sense. I bought a Sony X90J and the sound was so bad, I needed to get a sounder setup just to watch. I bought this, thinking it was a decent mid-tier option. Overall, the soundbar+sub combo is okay, but far from great. The vocals are clear and accurate, but the speakers in the soundbar must be too small, as the subwoofer is EXTREMELY easy to localize, so I think the crossover Sony has is too high. No matter how low I put the subwoofer volume, when watching content, you can easily tell in the room where the sub is placed, which should never happen. Also, to call this soundbar a Dolby Atmos soundbar is a joke, This is normal soundbar - when watching all the demos I use for my 9.1 system in my theater, I cannot hear a single "overhead" effect...even demos specifically ... MoreI bought a Sony X90J and the sound was so bad, I needed to get a sounder setup just to watch. Overall, I'll keep the soundbar, as the TV speakers are garbage, but this is likely WELL OVERPRICED, given the subwoofer is garbage and it definitely doesn't have DOLBY ATMOS capability that is worth a lick.
Impressed with this bar. I’m using it with the Sony A8H OLED TV. The passthrough HDMI worked great and allowed me to connect the Apple TV directly to the sound bar. I admit that I had to play the settings to get a great sound, and I’m very pleased with what resulted. But there’s one bug I can’t get around (or at least, I haven’t yet)—Dialogue volume. Basically, the dialogue is barely above a whisper unless I crank up the volume. When I do I’m blasted out in action scenes. It’s as though there is not mid range strength. Now, I’m watching with the remote in my hand…not a good, relaxing experience. For just regular watching and listening to music the bar performs very well. Nevertheless, I’m still looking for a solution. And “yes” dear Sony person—I’ve tried menu options and pressed all the buttons multiple times. I’ve researched the issue on line, too. Still, hopeful. But docking 1 star. I’ll revise if I figure this out.
Pros: It worked straight out of the box and was easy to connect to our Sony Bravia TV. Gives a good rich sound. The sound from the Bravia TV is already one of the best for TVs but the sound bar is much better. I particularly bought it to give a better speech rendition. Gives clarity from very low volumes to very high. The wireless woofer was a real bonus tooCan be used via bluetooth with my android phone to play music. e.g. BBC Sounds, Spotify and playlists Cons: Didn't come with an HDMI cable for ARC, only an optical cable which, I understand, does not give full control. Sometimes drops out at startup but I'm not sure if the TV is partly responsible. Could be something to do with the various timings and handshakes when the TV and Virgin box is switched on.
