Fantastic Camera - Specific Use!

I shot with Nikon for over 6 years so trading in one of my DSLRs for this setup was a very big step. My choice to swap was to be able to shoot urban photography much more discreetly and for that purpose, this was an excellent choice! The great things are a small physical form-factor. while still providing full-frame output. The low-light ISO performance is unbelievable. Some have called out the 12 MP as an issue but for me, I can honestly count on one hand how many times I've printed 20x30 so truly, 12 MP is MORE than enough. Also, I'm framing as I would print (minimal cropping). Last point about the 12 MP: I traded in my D700 (12 MP) so I'm in roughly the same place. The silent shooting mode works well - almost creepily well. The silent shooting mode works well - almost creepily well. I haven't used it in fast-motion situations nor indoor so I cannot confirm/deny the banding issue yet, but for outdoor journalistic or street photography, it works well. The dynamic range you're able to get out of a single image is quite good (attaching a vert shot at sunset). My setup is the a7s paired with a Leica 35mm Summilux.I will say that migrating from the D700, one of my current downsides is the transition in getting used to a different UI and menu setup. Also, in order for the smaller physical form factor, there are setting/controls that are imbedded into the electronic menu instead of externally. Some customization of the buttons help - but not all custom functions can be associated (hopefully a firmware update of sorts could address?). Other than that, the only other primary downside the battery life. Granted - the a7s sold in the US comes with 2 batteries (I believe I read somewhere else that in other countries it may only be 1?). However, even with 2 batteries, this is the first time I was concerned that I might not last the full day (full disclosure, I haven't run into the problem yet but then again, I had not shot with the rear LCD screen on on my DSLRs in the past so seeing 32% remaining after a half day took me by surprise - perhaps another mental adjustment).Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to test out the video capabilities just yet - though I hear this is one of the highlights (apologies!). However, certainly something I look forward to as I use this more.

Internal codec doesn't hold up to grading and can make getting a proper exposure difficult SLOG is very difficult to get a proper exposure, has a baseline ISO of 3,200 and requires ND filters if shooting in daylight Lacks a waveform monitor, essential for proper exposure Bottom line: This is a good camera, but not a great camera. You can get a good look out of this camera, but be prepared for the workarounds it will require. The best suggestion is to use one of the Cine Profiles and try to get as close to the look you want in-camera. It is still possible to do slight to modest grading, but not too much. The 8-bit AVC codec, while good as is, breaks down very quickly when graded. If you are prepared to make sure you get a proper exposure and don't mind shooting in APS-C mode (crop factor 1.5), then the sky's pretty much the limit then.

Great Camera While It Works - Awful Sony Service

In my experience, I believe there is so much going for the a7S and the whole a7 series of cameras however, there is one devastating fatal flaw.Let me just be clear, the Sony a7S is a great camera while it's working. In fact, the whole a7 line up is amazing. At issue is the camera's durability and Sony's service.Without going into all the dates, times and names of people I talked to at Sony and Precision Camera, their contracted service provider, I'll just say that the service was awful, far below any standard service I've received over the years from Canon. After several phone calls and promised return calls from Sony that didn't happen, I finally was able to speak with a Sony manager. She stated that my camera would not be repaired because "it would cost too much" and "it is out of warranty". Precision never gave me a quote to repair the camera. Further, in previous conversations, Precision said they wouldn't fix the camera, not that they couldn't...big difference. Sony's manager apologized multiple times but said that Sony would not repair my camera because it would "cost too much" and that "it was out of warranty". Since when does "out of warranty" mean a company should stop servicing their products leaving their customers stuck with expensive equipment that doesn't work? I've sent two generations old camera bodies and lenses back to Canon for their factory service with no issues. My friends who use Nikon have had the same experience with Nikon factory service. Sony and their contracted service provider, Precision's refusal to service equipment out of warranty falls well short of general industry wide customer service practices. I requested that the manager transfer me to her manager but she said that there was no one higher in the company I could talk to. Was she the CEO or a board member? Doubtful because she seemed to be reading off a script...when the customer says X, reply Y and try to move on to the next call. This scheme is common with companies who contract their customer service to other companies #usually in other countries#, hoping their customer complaints go away instead of providing customer service.Sony has created a potentially great line of cameras that could change the entire industry. However, Sony/Precision's customer service is so completely inadequate, it's their Achilles heel and the fatal flaw in the a7 line of cameras. Sony has put itself at the mercy of Precision, a contracted service company who is clearly more concerned with lowering service costs than providing good customer service. Does this mean that Sony has surrendered customer retention in favor of just trying to get a constant stream of new customers?Does the a7S II have better weather resistance? Sony's website doesn't say it was improved over the previous model.I believe that Sony is capable of doing much better and I hope they prove me right. But in the mean time, the a7S is a great camera while it works but an expensive paperweight because of poor to non-existent service from Sony/Precision when it doesn't.

Great all purpose camera for stills.
29 September 2014

I love photography in low light settings. I have tried several cameras with expensive fast lenses trying to get the shot in low light situations and struggled with missed shots because the lens is searching during auto focus or the subject is moving. I chose the Zeiss 24-70mm lens with a maximum aperture of 4, for my initial lens. Combined with this camera, I am able to capture a lot of shots in low lit areas and tight spaces. Since I mostly get close to my subjects, 12MP images are not limiting at all. I really enjoy the smaller file size too, though 16MP might have been the sweet spot. The ability to shoot in absolute silence when needed is fantastic. I can sit in a room with family members and pull off great shots without the flow of their social interactions ... MoreI love photography in low light settings. The ability to shoot in absolute silence when needed is fantastic. I can sit in a room with family members and pull off great shots without the flow of their social interactions being perturbed by the beep of the focus lock and the click of the shutter. There have been some complaints about the focusing ability in low light in some situations: it is not an action camera, but I have barely missed a shot with people moving about and acting normally, including quick gestures with the hands in manual mode. The A7S also captures fantastic images in normal light and the images have an impressive dynamic range: another factor in my decision to get this camera. The detail captured in the highlights and shadows is very good. This camera excels in the areas is has been advertised to do. It was not intended for action photography, which I believe is the intended niche for the A7. For my purposes, the camera is a joy to use. Using the camera mostly for stills, not video, it fulfills some specific needs suited for my tastes: great low light capture and great dynamic range. The ability to shoot completely silent is especially useful when hanging out with family and friends: hearing the beep of the focus lock and the click of the shutter really does distract people, if not annoy them, and that makes getting good shots more difficult. I cannot think of a reason to give the camera anything less than four stars keeping my personal expectations in line with the intended uses for this camera. There are quite a few reviews honing in on its video capabilities. It is also a fantastic stills camera, provided the inherent constraints of the design work with your style of photography. I am completely satisfied with this camera.

Great highlight detail, dynamic range
4 July 2014

++ Each of the three Sony a7 models is a purpose-built camera. The a7S has outstanding dynamic range that is preserved to a fairly high ISO, and permits, distinctly better than other cameras - detail preservation in specular highlights - shadow brightness lifted without too much noise - Sony's dynamic range enhancement, in the current software version, is very natural-looking and functional, truly allowing us to expose as we were taught. - (expose for the highlights, scale HDR to manage the shadows) ++ This sensor has been lightly panned for low 12 MP res. I have shot images in parallel with my a7R -- the differences are obvious, but to get the best from any camera it is extremely important to use a high-resolution lens, such as the Zeiss lenses developed for Sony. ... More++ Each of the three Sony a7 models is a purpose-built camera. I have shot images in parallel with my a7R -- the differences are obvious, but to get the best from any camera it is extremely important to use a high-resolution lens, such as the Zeiss lenses developed for Sony. It is clear that this sensor is fully capable of making pin-sharp 16 x 20 inch prints, and I've made very sharp 30 x 40 inch wall prints with from the alpha 700, which has the same pixel resolution, expect to be able to do the same with this. I've made sharp 16 x 20 wall prints from a 3MP camera with post-processing, so the 12MP resolution is simply something to understand and manage. ++ Caveat 1: I will use the a7R for work demanding high resolution, and the a7S for work demanding high ISO. For me, this means the ability to hand-hold nature macro shots in the shaded woods using ISO 6000 with acceptable depth of field and comfortable shutter speeds (no more f8 at 1/10 and pray there's not a puff of breeze). ++ It also means shooting entertainers, in *silent mode* so as not to disturb the audience, in natural light. I am very much looking forward to doing this. ++ Caveat 1: I almost always use manual exposure and focus. Manual focus with the a7S is not totally convenient, as the MF button automagically magnifies when the focus ring is turned, losing composition. Edge enhancement aids manual focus but does *not* indicate critical focus accuracy. But with non-auto lenses like my Nikon f1.2 55 mm, the edge enhancement makes life easy. ++ Zebra striping is a good exposure aid, after we learn how it correlates with the final image. A whole range of intensities is available beginning with only show whether at least one channel is saturated on down to this face isn't quite where I want it. ++ The electronic EVF is wonderful -- the acutance is as good as the ground glass of yore, and it shows a rough guess of the final image. The immediate post-exposure image is helpful, but in general is a shade darker than the final image. For someone working with moving subjects, the few milliseconds delay of the EVF means leading the action by a heartbeat. ++ Caveat 3: The menus of the a7 cameras are identically *structured* but do not have identical contents, relevant to the different purposes of the models. ++ Lenses: I bought the Sony 28-70mm kit lens because of the excellent DxOMark review. It has excellent sharpness. The images provided here are with that lens. ++ Low-light sensitivity: dpreview's 6/22/14 high iso compared test is worth reviewing. No camera is free of noise, but the a7S is an order of magnitude better in the moonlight, and those of us who remember the grain of Royal X Pan at ISO 1250 are stunned. ++ Battery life: Oh, get over it and take along 2 or 3 extra charged batteries. This is how Sony kept the form small. Happily, it's the same battery as the NEX cameras. ++ Oh, and with video turn *off* the wind-noise filter -- the cuts the bass and removes richness. ++ The in-camera image processing is very good, and the special features cannot really be replicated with Sony's Image Data Converter. But the edge enhancement and contrast masking is appropriate to snapshot-sized prints, not wall prints.

The Sony A7s is the perfect companion for every situation. Not only does it have the most detailed Full HD sensor of all cameras in this price range, but also the endless possibilities this camera gives are amazing. It starts with mounting pretty much every lens that was ever designed apart from the m43 standard and ends with low noise performance even in high ISO range. It is small, lightweight and unreached in pretty much every aspect in it's price range and way beyond that. There are a few things which should be improved (hopefully in future models) such as:- 4:3 video mode for anamorphic filming (i put this on top together with 4k 60p because it is sooo important)- internal 4k 60p- internal nd filter- Full HD slowmotion up to 240 frames- keep the menu ... MoreThe Sony A7s is the perfect companion for every situation. Add my features and we have the perfect camera.

Pro features at consumer cost
9 April 2016

I purchased this camera when it was on sale at Electronics Valley for $2399, and it was honestly a bargain because of the $3000 price tag everywhere else. I have already made two short films with it and I am blown away by its quality and features. I am coming from a Sony NEX-VG900 and Sony a3000 for video, so honestly this purchase was pretty top of the line for me. I have not shot any weddings with it so far, and rightfully so, because there is a lot of setup and a bit of a learning curve with this camera, but I have shot 2 short films which you can see on my YouTube Channel - Just Search (or Google) Relive Time and find it on my channel. It does shoot great 4k, and the SD Card I purchased was only a $27 Sony 64GB Class 10 UHS-1/U3 SDXC up to 94MB/s card. I have already made two short films with it and I am blown away by its quality and features. I am coming from a Sony NEX-VG900 and Sony a3000 for video, so honestly this purchase was pretty top of the line for me. It does shoot great 4k, and the SD Card I purchased was only a $27 Sony 64GB Class 10 UHS-1/U3 SDXC up to 94MB/s card. I can also shoot 1080p 120fps slow motion with that SD card as well and that looks beautiful. I did try it with a U1 SD card and it would not let me record at the higher quality rates. The battery life is horrible but as some users state, you can carry an external power pack to keep it up and running or constantly charged from the camera, which I also do. The S-Log 3 is no joke, if you have even the tiny bit of experience with color grading (basic S-Curve), shoot with it! The outcome is amazing. Be careful about shooting S-Log 3 in low light though, or you will run into some noise issues which you can kinda see in my "The Genesis" film, but a little de-noise or over exposure cleans it up well enough, especially if you are shooting at 4k, and it makes for simpler post editing. And I did not have to upgrade my computer either to edit in 4k or Full HD 120fps. I use Sony Vegas Pro 13 and running an i5, 16GB Ram, 240GB SSD, with a GTX 750 Ti and it runs pretty good. If you are considering buying this for professional shoots, then buy it!

Sony A7s a video camera POWERHOUSE

The testes are very good. Everything you would expect from this camera. Our specific tests we're focused on lens fall-off and sensor reaction. The DR was also very surprising, great tonal rendition in the shadows. For this camera the biggest challenge is the infrastructure (for lack of more familiar terms THE RIG). It is important for professional camera crews to use this camera (or any camera) in a traditional fashion, the CINOFLEX, gave the SONY A7S camera that ability. Truly a WOW camera for the quality of the sensor and ability to capture lens fall-off, focus cylinder moves, and the full frame quality image. We are shooting anamorphic Panavision tests soon, that is the true test to see how this camera can make a difference within the marketplace. A very basic ... MoreThe testes are very good. Truly a WOW camera for the quality of the sensor and ability to capture lens fall-off, focus cylinder moves, and the full frame quality image. We are shooting anamorphic Panavision tests soon, that is the true test to see how this camera can make a difference within the marketplace. A very basic and rudimentary test, but this is what we loved about the SONY A7S Camera. Details about this video grab: Camera: SONY A7S PP: SLOG2 Lens: 200mm Stop: T3.1 Color: 3200K SS: 1/50 ISO 3200 ------------- so we shot directly into a light to desaturate the image and lose any detail, then we overexposed by 4 stops. The ungraded image is on the right, the graded image is on the left. With very little effort or manipulation we found good contrast, detail, shadows, highlight control, and sharpness was easily recovered. The lens fall off was also very pronounced and truly magnificent. We think the SLOG2 setting is great, if you can deal with the mandatory 3200 ISO element, but also PP4 with some custom tweaks of gamma and detail knee should give you good performance. Bottom line, the sensor in this camera is far beyond the realm of any consumer image available, anywhere. If you embrace and correctly format a DSLR to your on set environment (I.E. with the Cinoflex) you have an incredible camera on your hands. We do believe that......The best camera being used by the worst cameraman makes a useless image, but the worst camera with a the best cameraman makes an outstanding image!

Tremendous value
22 July 2023

You really cant beat the value. Images are clean and detailed to ISO 6400 and the form factor is small and light. Its my secondary body to shoot with. The 1080p HD is excellent with no crop and will shoot clean to 10000 ISO. For todays price I doubt anything else comes close to the image quality it delivers.

a7S and a7R Not for action photograpy
20 August 2014

I professionally shoot high school, club, and collegiate sports. I own the Sony a99 and a7. I love the size, WiFi capability, and everything about the A7. However, on both of my above body's, the 24MP sensor is too noisy above ISO 3200. When I shoot sports, especially indoor sports, such as swimming and diving, I often want to use an ISO of 3200+ to achieve the highest possible shutter speed and lowest noise for a given aperture. When I read about the low-noise, high ISO capability of the a7S, with its large photo site, 12MP sensor, I couldn't wait. When the a7S became available for pre-order, I immediately ordered one. When the a7S became available for pre-order, I immediately ordered one. It finally came in, and it met my every expectation except one: When placed in Continuous Auto Focus (AF-C) mode, using any of the new FE mount lenses, the camera takes from 1 to 3 seconds to focus. This makes the camera useless for indoor or outdoor, high speed action photography and videography.I spoke to Sony several times about this problem. They agree that the camera's focusing system hunts some before it focus locks on the target. Two different Sony reps said that this is a product of Contrast Only autofocus used in the a7S and a7R. My a99 and a7 use Phase and Contrast autofocus and they both focus much, much, much faster that the a7S or a7R.Now I can see Sony using Contrast Only autofocus in the a7R which is designed more for studio or landscape photography, but why Sony didn't take the slow Contrast Only slow focus into consideration for the a7S a camera that could have revolutionized low-light, high ISO action shooting, is beyond me. What a major shame! If you want to see this for yourself, it's easy. Go to any Sony dealer, mount any Sony FE autofocus lens on an a7S or a7R, select AF-C in the Focus menu, and watch how much it hunts and how long it takes to focus when the shutter is depressed half way down.I sent the camera back. If this problem can be fixed with firm-ware, I will buy another one, and update my review to 5 stars. Otherwise, two stars is all it deserves, as I shoot moving subjects. The a7 currently is a much better choice over the a7s or a7R for action shooting.
