Decided a few months ago to treat myself to a new camera. After a lot of research, opted for this one as it ticked a lot of my requirements. Do I fully understand all the setting and what they do, no but it works for me.The E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS kit lens that came with the camera does not get the best review but as seen in the architectural photos it does a very good job with a little care when taking the photo.Overall I'm really happy with this little camera and will be sticking with it for hopefully many years to come.

Loving the sony a6400 - If you get a kit lens, get the 18-135 if possible
15 October 2024

I have really enjoyed using this camera so far. It has been some time since I have owned a nice camera and we decided to purchase one for some upcoming traveling to capture some nice memories. The camera itself feels like it is pretty easy to use, and for learning to use it the 16-55 kit lens has been fine, but I do agree with the sentiments of others that it leaves something to be desired. I do wish I had spent the money to get the 18-135 kit lens instead. I do have 2 lenses on the way to work with on the camera next and look forward to what i can get out of those. I also appreciate how lightweight the camera is yet it still feels solidly built. The menu system felt a bit overwhelming at first, but after watching some tutorial videos and researching what the ... MoreI have really enjoyed using this camera so far. I feel like the out of the box settings for just taking a nice picture of the scene works pretty well, I am excited to see how some of the scenes will look with the new lens. The pictures I am attaching are the ones i took out during my first and second session using the kit lens. I will try to remember to update after i get some pictures with the new sigma lens i have coming in. These were taken as jpegs from the camera and have not been edited.

Nice camera, shame about the downloadng facilities
7 March 2024

There is a lot to learn, but the default settings are fine. I have explored and I now think I know how to use the various settings. It takes phenomenal pictures. My main grizzle is that, despite 30 year career in IT, I can't get either "Links to SmartPhone" and "Send to computer" facilities to work. PlayMemories Mobile does not exist on the Apple AppStore, though are some suspicious similar apps. The Wifi Connect feature asked me to "press WPS button to access". I happened to know this button is on my router. It tried to connect but just hung. Instead I just remove the SD memory card as always, but you can also plug in a cable to your computer. A camera case option should have been offered at the same time. Note that it is heavier and bigger than a compact camera. ... MoreThere is a lot to learn, but the default settings are fine. Irritatingly, the camera comes with 12 pieces of paper and booklets, each of which you have to check before you throw them away.

Lower apertures (f/1.8 - f/3.5) have worked better for me in eliminating noise indoors.-You'll probably want to get a better lens for portraitsFor the pricepoint, it's a great deal. The downsides for this camera are really just that you don't get a full-frame and there is no IBIS. You'll need to keep crop-factor in mind when purchasing lenses.

[Rewarded Review] Abandoned after 4 months
14 June 2024

The camera itself was great, and is still very good. However, it's been almost 5 years since it's had a firmware update, so it's already been abandoned by Sony. There are always ways to improve a product after release, but they've chosen not to do so. In fact, it's gotten worse. The companion (phone) app has been replaced by one that doesn't work at all. It's not that it's clunky or unintuitive, it straight-up doesn't work (1.8 rating on the store). The menu system in the camera still refers to the old app (again, because the firmware is 5 years old), which is probably why the new app doesn't work. This camera was released February 2019. Overall, I've spent about $5000 on this ecosystem, but I'm very likely to switch to Fujifilm or Canon. Either way, I'm obviously not spending any more on products that aren't supported. They seem to support the full-frame cameras better, but having that size/weight of camera defeats the entire point of mirrorless. I'd advise against anyone buying any Sony photography gear.

[Rewarded Review] Awful Customer Service Experience
1 December 2023

I'm sure this camera is great as all the reviews indicate, but this is more about Best Buy and their service. First, I ordered the a6400 and it showed up two days later. Problem was, the box was open, there was no packing to protect the camera, and the camera packaging itself was damaged. Sure enough, when inspecting the camera, the viewfinder was shattered. Now comes the fun part. Returning the camera. I elected to do it via the BB Chat, because I was wasting time going through all the prompts on the phone. Trying to actually get to a human seemed futile. So after a lengthy chat, I was told that a replacement camera was on its way and would arrive today. No dice. So I checked my BB account, and found that the replacement order was cancelled. So I checked my BB account, and found that the replacement order was cancelled. So now, I'm going through the prompts again to speak to a human. When I finally do, I was told that the backend team, whoever that is, cancelled the order and that I will have to wait for the returned camera to arrive to BB, get the refund, and re-order. I'm trying to give BB a grand and boy do they make it hard. First off, how do you sell a thousand dollar camera and put it in a box twice the camera's size and not provide and packing material? The box also had no tape to seal it. It's some sort of box that has it's own adhesive that obviously didn't do well in colder temps. Anyway, like I said at the beginning, I'm sure the camera is great, but like all the big box stores, the service is garbage. Serves me right, I suppose.

[Rewarded Review] Great upgrade from older model
30 July 2023

Upgraded to Sony a6400 from a Sony a5000 in July 2023 - so far I've found the a6400 to be a very capable new camera and a great upgrade from my old camera even several years beyond its first release date (and with the new a6700 just coming out around this time).Autofocus is great and fast, I've really liked having the viewfinder and tend to use it more for photos now. I've found it a little confusing to find the right settings to adjust ISO and the shutter speed in different shooting modes, but that's more on me getting used to it. The body feels like it's set at a good weight and it is distributed well across the camera with different sized lenses (I've used Sigma 16mm and 56mm f1.4 lenses on it so far), and like the grip/how it sits in the hand for shooting.I ... MoreUpgraded to Sony a6400 from a Sony a5000 in July 2023 - so far I've found the a6400 to be a very capable new camera and a great upgrade from my old camera even several years beyond its first release date (and with the new a6700 just coming out around this time).Autofocus is great and fast, I've really liked having the viewfinder and tend to use it more for photos now. The included SD card was a 64gb Sandisk Extreme Pro, which complements my other SD cards well (I already had the same Extreme Pro card in 32gb, 128gb, and 256gb storage capacities). [Note the camera has only 1 sd card slot though]. I liked the camera bag it came with as well - I think it was a Think Tank Photo Retrospective 7M. Comfortably holds my camera with two lenses, a digital camera I also use, and my extra batteries and a tablet.Overall, very satisfied with my experience with the camera and buying from B&H!
