Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 VII Digital Camera

Best high end P&S pocketable digital camera today

Great pocketable camera with fast autofocus, usable tiny flash, fast lens to minimize the amount of ISO boost needed, Raw capture and with Shutter Priority. It will not fit in a dress shirt pocket but it will fit in a cargo pocket or jacket pocket for those not inclined to carrying a purse or backpack.The electronic viewfinder is very small and of limited use but it does have a very nice tilt indicator so as to get pictures with trees or buildings that do not appear to be leaning like something from Pisa.Small battery as to be expected but the case provided was actually a Sony Cyber-shot LCS-CSJ case that has an outer pocket to hold a couple of spare batteries (needed for video). Putting in a lot of filler items instead of reducing the selling price of a camera is routinely done but it is decidedly environmentally unfriendly.From a still photography perspective I would have preferred the controls of the Lumix DC-LX100 II but that camera's lens lets in dust and there is no way for the owner to clean the sensor and the autofocus performance is poor.

Bigger, Heavier, More Expensive, With Over 20 Pages of Menu Settings

I own a Sony DSC-RX100, the first of the line, and I do not see a substantial upgrade in the DSC-RX100IV. The main difference is that the menu has sprouted at least 20 extra pages of non-essential features. As far as I can tell, it is the same lens, but I have to dig deeper to control what ought to be up-front settings like White Balance. As an old-school shooter, I really prefer the simplicity of the older models. Here is what I like about the new model: The LCD is jointed so that it can be held at an angle, the lens ring seems looser, The DISP menu is comprehensive about settings. On the other hand, it is bulkier and heavier. It has a built-in optical viewfinder, but I never did figure out how to set the diopter so that I could get a clear picture from it. Great Camera in a Small Size

I was looking for something to take when I didn't want to carry my Nikon D750 (which is a GREAT camera, BTW, but heavy with all the lenses). I bought the Sony as a result of reading reviews and word of mouth from others who had purchased it. I've been taking it along with me for everyday outings just to get a feel for its size and functionality and I have been very impressed. DO NOT except the same quality as a full-sized DSLR; but for the size of this camera, I think it's excellent. Video is fun and easy. I love the shooting grip that I purchased to go with it - for me, that's a must have and terrific that the camera can be controlled directly from the grip. And it can be used as a tripod as well. I've read a lot of negative reviews about Sony's menu system and let me say this. Yes, there are a LOT of menus. But if you stop for a minute and browse through them, they are arranged very logically and not at all hard to use. You can also customize the Function button on back (which I did immediately) as well as setup your own custom menu with the functions you us the most (which I also did immediately). It also shoots in RAW (a MUST for me) and allows full control of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, again a must have for me. And if I ever do want a day off, it actually takes very nice photos in automatic mode. All in all, I highly recommend this camera as a pocket sized camera. I can't call it a point and shoot as it does so much more. Note that it is pricey, but for me, it's exactly what I wanted and well worth it.

Great camera

I have had several RX100 cameras and was interested in getting the MK7 (VII) because of the zoom and the same features that make these cameras so good.Compared to my other RX100 II camera, (and I've also had the first series), I think the low light photos are far superior to the older models. I found it interesting snapping photos at sunset, with no other shots taken, all the photos look clear and in focus. I found this to be surprisingly good considering cameras in low light at maximum zoom (in my experience) haven't been too useful to do this.I also find it good that I can transfer photos from the camera to my phone (which backs up photos automatically to my cloud). High quality camera you will not mind carrying around.

I have been using the camera for about two weeks. This camera is both easy to use and difficult. It can operate as a point and shoot. However if you want to make use of it many features, there is a steep learning curve. I like the view finder, especially on bright days. The only negative is that sometimes when I put the camera up to my face and tap the external screen, I change the focus point. There is probably a setting to turn off the touch screen focus, but I have to find it in the menu, which is not all that straight forward. There is an online manual, but the camera maybe obsolete by the time I get through the whole thing. The pictures look great. I have yet to try out the video. I mostly shoot photos. I bought this camera because I wanted a great camera that I would not mind carrying around no matter what. I love my SLR but there are plenty of times it is not practical to carry it around. Most of the time mobile phone cameras just do not cut it for me. It is just to limiting and the camera wears down the phone battery really quickly. The camera is well built, Of course, given the highprice, it should be.

Nice little camera

I only bought this camera a little over a week ago, so I am still learning to come to grips with all its features and how to handle them. My initial impressions are, however, very positive.With all this rain lately, I have not had many chances to go out and take photos, but I am happy with the results I have got so far. Although some of the controls on the camera are a little small and rather sensitive for my big hands, I am getting better by the day handling them with accuracy, so I am looking forward to getting consistently good results out of this little gem.A great buy!

Initially I wanted to get something for traveling. Easily fits into pockets and can last throughout the day. The M7 has been friendly from the start and only until you start to play with the setting do you realize what this unit is capable of. I really enjoy the ability to take high-quality shots and have it transferred to my phone with the easy to use app. Makes for sharing with friends and/or posting to social media a breeze. If budget is not an issue, then the M7 is top in its class. If price is a concern there's much better alternatives. Refined Camera with Extremely Useful Handgrip

I previously owned the RX100 I (the original model) which was (and is) an excellent camera. Version VII contains numerous upgrades - a better lens with longer reach, Bluetooth and overall better image quality. The bluetooth handgrip and tripod (GP-VPT2BT) is a game changer for me. It makes the RX100 VII much easier to use for both stills and video. I purchased the camera and handgrip prior to my daughter's wedding and I couldn't be happier with the (informal) pictures I got.

I'm a semi-pro photographer who mainly uses a Canon 5D MkIV DSLR but I wanted a camera I could carry around when I didn't want to lug a DSLR; one that could shoot landscapes as well as it could shoot street. Hence buying the DSC-RX100 VII based on reviews and chat group praise. So, yes, the Sony operating system is slightly confusing but you really don't need a lot of the stuff that is buried several layers deep. The quality of photos is very good indeed shoot in RAW and on manual and you'll have no complaints. Sometimes the colours need rejigging in post-production but they can on a DSLR too.
