I was looking for a tele zoom lens for my Sony Alpha-55 SLR. The usual option is to go for a 70-300, and Sony offer this lens in the range. However, the auto-focus action on the 70-300 is very hesitant and noisy, and you may well miss some action shots while the lens is hunting for focus, especially on a moving subject. The DT in the name means this lens only fits APS-sensor cameras, so it won't work on the rarer full-frame Sony Alphas. SAL means it fits cameras with the Alpha/ Minolta AF mount, and SAM denotes the built-in AF motor which gives the super-fast auto-focus action. Beware, there is an earlier version of the 55-200 lens which doesn't say SAM on the barrel, and this lens relies on the camera's AF motor, so you don't get all the benefits of the SAM technology. This is why the lens I am reviewing has the product code SAL552002, there's a "2" on the end denoting the later model variant. I use this on my Sony A57 for mainly photographing my pets and some outdoor wildlife shots or portrait photography. I love that it goes down to 4.0, but only up till about 75mm. I plan on eventually upgrading to either the Sigma 50-500mm or 120-400mm for more serious wildlife photography, but in the mean time this quiet lens lets me get close to birds, lizards, and coyotes. Pros Sharp Fast and quiet AF Light Tracking Focus works really well Compact Decent Bokeh Cons Wish it was a fixed 3.0 or even 4.0 Bokeh can looks a little weird in certain situations, almost looks like it has lines Hunts in even moderate low light (in the shade on a sunny day) Overall, very cheap but decent lens. Would recommend!

It's a good lens except for one annoying characteristic - the filter rotates when the lens is focused. This is not the case with my other two Sony DT lenses: SAL1680Z (Zeiss 16-80 - I LOVE this lens) and SAL35F18 (non-zoom 35 mm). I use flip-out lens-caps on all my lenses I highly recommend those), and it's a bit strange on this lens to have the flipped out lens-cap rotate as you focus. If you're using a polarizing filter with this lens, you have to re-adjust the polarizer angle after you focus - a pain in the neck. Otherwise it's a great lens.

This is a good kit lens for medium range. Seems a little slow to focus, but the focus is good. I bought it with a Sony SLT77. I like the ability to go from portrait distance to 30 or 40 feet away and have my subject well framed. You don't get a prime lens for the price this sells for (mine was $*0 with the purchase of the camera.) but it is good zoom for many occasions.
I absolutely love this lens, the optics are difinitely worth more than $xxx, but construction is a bit of a letdown overall. Of course as for under $500 range, it's an awesome lens with an OK set of materials. I really like the way it performs. It is sharp throughout the entire zoom range and doesn't distort. At least not enough for it to be visible. The focusing system is also very fast and is much quieter than on 18-55mm kit lens that I used to have.Drawbacks are the way the hood mounts on the lens. I'm used to lenses with internal focusing, so this one feels a bit weird with external focusing and rotating front element. I gave my son my Sony a55 camera when I upgraded to the a77 which I absolutely love. I kept all of my high end lenses and purchased this lens for him. It is a great lens, perfect for up close and distance. One thing about Sony lenses I have learned over the years that even their less expensive lenses still take great photos! My son is using this lens for family photos and trips that they take.
I bought this lens alongside my first DSLR and it quickly parked the kit lens in the bag for a while. It is fast, takes good shots and it is a nice first zoom/telephoto for beginning DSLR users. It comes with a hood, which makes it look cool and blocks the sun and outside light. I ended up parking this lens as I got a lens that was slightly better and was a superset of the range it encompassed, but for $200 this is a good buy and if you can get it cheaper in a combo deal, it is even better. If I had a knock on the lens, it is made of plastic and it is a tad blurry on the 200mm end in certain situations. It could be me, though.
I haven't seen the review I posted a couple of weeks ago, so here is a recap and update. Since the image stabilization is built into the Sony DSLR's, this classic inexpensive optic pairs very nicely with the A77. The central sharpness (even wide open) is high enough to capitalize on the 24MP resolution of the APS-C sensor such that you can take a cropped 10MP 500mm equivalent shot with this 10oz glass handheld. Since the A77's EVF provides for 13X focus magnification, you can manually focus to be sure you get the right spot focused - a real problem for me with long tele shots. I don't like plastic lens mounts, but at this weight, it's not too much of a hazard. Just don't try to pick up the camera by grabbing the lens.
The outside of the lens had brown marks on the barrel about 180 degrees apart. I mounted the lens on my Sony camera, but the image quality was poor and out of focus. I tried many setting, manual, auto, shutter etc., but this did not improve the image quality. I was about to sent the lens back to the buyer, but I went to the Sony support site, to see if i could get any further info. I found that with some lens filters, the focus system system may not work correctly. I tried to get the filter lens off, which took me some time, but eventually the lens worked OK,. I have used the lens on several occasions and has produced good results. This is a good lens for the money. I have now going to purchase a 55-300mm lens for my camera. Ever wish you had a nice 10 oz 500mm f/5.6 in your bag? Well, coupling this baby with the new Sony A77 you can crop out the center of the frame (which is nearly tack sharp wide open) and voila! True, the image softens a bit outside the central sweet spot, but only near the frame edges where the chromatic abberactions reign on high. Of course, the A77 corrects CA on the jpegs and most RAW converters will have a lens correction plugin soon to relieve the effort of manual correction. It may not be Pro Glass, but it sure performs well, independent of price.
