Picked mine up used which is the only way to buy unless you're either making money from your work or independently wealthy....

Great Lens
23 October 2013

This lens is a MUST for those planning a trip involving travelling to cities where there are high density buildings, coach tours and confined spaces eg restaurants. I have used this lens extensively on a recent tour of Europe and found it invaluable when photographing the Fiords of Norway, to the confined old streets of Prague, to the narrow streets and canals of Venice or the proximity to large ruins in Rome. I wished that I had this lens when photographing the spectacular backlit caves of Guilin in China last year – which were often too close for a 24mm (35mm format) lens. This lens is one of the smoothest manual zoom lens that I have used. The lens is quick to focus with a high degree of focusing accuracy. This lens is one of the smoothest manual zoom lens that I have used. The lens is quick to focus with a high degree of focusing accuracy. I have used this lens for photography from a moving tour coach in a built up area where the wide angle lens with a large filter surface area is advantageous - just place the lens firmly against a window glass (to avoid reflections) and shoot – ensure that the camera is set to Shutter Speed priority and use a shutter speed of approx. 1/3000sec. Caution should be used if using this lens for close flash photography as the shadow from the lens body can encroach on the resultant lower section of the image. I have taken more than 50% of my trip photos with this lens - my SEL18200LE lens has been used for the remainder of daytime photographs. This lens, with my NEX-6, permits me to use the combination as a rapid point and shoot camera – with a much faster focusing solution than my DSC HX20V.

Great landscapes in good lighting
9 April 2019

This is the first lens I bought for my Sony a6400. I took it to Costa Rica with my girlfriend and captured some beautiful landscape and portrait images on the beach. With such a wide aperture, it’s best in situations where you have lots of light like a beach. Photos in low-light with this lens need to be steady otherwise you’ll get noticeable blur or have to make the shutter speed so low that the picture is underexposed. There is also a fair bit of distortion when in the 10mm setting, which is easily removeable in Lightroom. Great lens and lived up to the hype you find online

Landscape and street photography

The Sony E 10-18/4 is a high quality lens intended to capture sweeping vistas on Sony APSC mirrorless cameras. I have used this lens on NEX7, A6000, A6300 and also on a full-frame A7R2. The lens is superbly sharp if stopped to f5.6 or f8.0, which is a usual setting for landscape images. Sharpness at f4.0 is good for all but the 10mm setting, which may be a bit restrictive in some circumstances. Distortion is quite big at the extreme ends of the zoom range (particularly at 10mm) so if the lens is used for architectural shots a middle range of the zoom would be the most appropriate unless one shoots in JPG (which corrects for the distortion) or is prepared to correct RAW images in post processing. On the three newer cameras A6000, A6300 and A7R2 chromatic aberration is not significant and rarely needs correcting in post-processing. By contrast, on the older NEX7 camera images taken at 10mm zoom setting have a strong magenta cast, which is difficult to remove in post processing. An easy way round the limitation of this camera-lens combination is to convert images taken at 10-12mm setting to BW. If the images need to be in colour than brightening and de-saturating magenta channel goes a long way to correcting the image.

Sharp, Lightweight, love the focal length
1 February 2016

I wanted a super wide lens that doesn't distort like a fisheye, and this is it! This is my favorite lens, because I like the focal length and wide depth of field. I use this lens more than all my others. Usage: SELP1650(rare;low shutter speed), SEL16F28(never/unusable;too soft), SEL20F28(often;stealth and sharpness), SEL35F18(less often;too narrow), SEL50F18(rare;far too narrow), and SEL55210(often;for long reach). I simply point-and-shoot in the general direction, then crop what I need, during family outings. For architectural and landscape, this is also my favorite lens. I used to struggle with panoramas and jagged edges, but NOW i can take one shot and have everything, with no image glitches. It's not the sharpest lens, but it is also not unacceptably soft like the SEL16F28 with/without wide angle adapter. I would subjectively rate sharpness as 'near the SELP1650 kit lens', which is decent, but not stunningly sharp. Vignette and chromatic aberration do not bother me with this lens, but they might be there. I wish I could use the F2.8 11-20mm Tokin_ lens, but there is no E-mount version.

Sony 10-18mm f/4 lens, great compact ultra wide lens for Sony APS-C cameras.
30 May 2022

This is a great small lens for Sony APS-C cameras. While it is not as small as the collapsable 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6, both are similar sizes when the camera is powered up. Starting at 10mm gives you a 15mm equivalent well into ultra-wide territory. Going to 18mm (28mm equivalent) gives you the same perspective as most of the newest mobile phones, so you're getting a very versatile lens here. The corners do get a bit soft at 10mm wide open at f/4, it's mostly ignorable and the softness goes away at f/5.6. The hood is excellent, and this lens does something you wouldn't expect at this price point--10mm actually sticks out the most, and the lens retracts as you zoom towards 18mm. This makes the hood shade more effectively shaded at 18mm, and at 10mm the lens can peer ... MoreThis is a great small lens for Sony APS-C cameras. Mechanically the lens has an all metal exterior, zooming and focus are smooth and rotate freely. Lens creep doesn't happen. It's filter size is 62mm, slightly unusual, but an obvious choice for a compact ultra wide lens. If you can coax some bokeh from this lens, it's fairly neutral in character.

The Wide-Angle to Beat

Hello eBay Community, I hope you receive this well. Now, for starters, the Sony SEL1018 has a constant aperture of "4" (f/4), that needs to be remedied on eBay's behalf... On to the review: If you own a Sony NEX/Alpha camera, or plan on getting one, this is one of the first lenses you should pick up. Now, I won't elaborate on the lens overly so here - there being numerous reviews out there (Kurt Munger is a definite "go to" for E-Mount lens information/reviews) - so I will highlight the pros and cons for you instead. Pros: + Only Ultra Wide Angled Zoom lens native to Sony's E-Mount. 10-18mm (15-27mm relative to 35mm format) + Extremely high quality image rendering, even on the 16mp sensor I have been testing it on. Corner to corner, this lens is a beast + Sharp image quality, f/5.6-8 the definite sweet spot, with a wonderfully crisp range f/4+ + Light weight and well balanced + (To speak to my own copy) Perfectly damp "Zoom" ring + Price vs Value Ratio = "Value" is way above Cons: - Overly damp "Focus" ring... This may be good or bad, dependent upon preferences. My copy is very tight when turning - Width. The lens happens to be short in length, and wide in diameter. If you have large hands, like myself, and shoot on a NEX-6, NEX-7 or soon to be A6000, you will undoubtedly be running into an issue with ergonomics... This is rectified when camera/lens is mounted on a tripod, but as a walk about you will have to find clever, impractical ways of holding it* - Constant f/4. Not the fastest wide angle lens out there There is plenty more I find favorable, and nothing else I find disagreeable with this lens. The way the NEX/Alpha line-up are being made - and marketed, for that matter - are both "Compact" and "Light." Something easy to lug around, yet durable for the day's shoot. A device and lenses that won't burden you, but compliment your eyes in capturing moments. I think Sony has done a fine job thus far with their Mirrorless Camera roster, and I am happy to say that the Sony SEL1018 makes a wonderful additional to their current line of E-Mount lenses. Happy bidding everyone. *PS-Please don't be too wary of this "con." They way the handle sits alongside the lens is definitely unnecessarily close, but by no means a deal breaker. Sincerest Regards, Patrick Marlett

have had a chance to use this lens about a half dozen excursions so far. i am with shooting with sony a6000. (it does make the camera appear a lot more serious)i do not run files through software, so my comments will be few. at wide open there is some noticeable bending, but from 12-18mm things look great. it is plenty fast. i shoot wide angle most of the time and this range is about perfect. my only other experience with a fancy-pants lens is the zeiss 12mm. that was great certainly, but for the savings and the little bit of flexibility, i would recommend this lens over the zeiss. AND, the bundle!! i am enjoying this very much.
