An ideal companion for your compact, APS-C mirrorless camera, the E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens from Sony offers a versatile equivalent zoom range of 24-75mm as well as a retractable design that makes your system much more manageable when not in use. Helping to deliver excellent optical quality throughout the range are an extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements to combat various aberrations and improve contrast. The lens also incorporates Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and a power zoom mechanism, both of which will help you capture smooth and steady stills and video. Additionally, it has an internal focus design, a minimum focus distance of 9.8", and uses a seven-blade circular aperture for smooth bokeh. Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 16-50mm lens will provide a versatile standard zoom range that is equivalent to 24-75mm. A variable aperture of f/3.5-5.6 helps keep the lens' overall size and weight to a minimum. One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality. Four aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur. Enjoy smooth zooms ideal for shooting movies with the power zoom mechanism available in this lens.

1. Buy it used. You can easily find one for less than $150.2. Use it between 16-24mm. This is the sweet range. For the money, size, and weight you can't beat the quality you will get out of it. Sure, the longer end of it is a bit soft but the lower end will deliver comparable results to much more expensive lens. The distortion can be easily corrected in camera or via software.

This lens came with my expensive Sony CX6700 alpha. Very disappointed as i really cannot take a clear picture inside or outside. Ive followed youtube tutorials on camera and still basic pictures. Seems like phones take way better pics than this starter lens. Such a disappointment for an expensive camera. I need a lense that can take good quality family portraits.

If you’re so inclined to point your camera at the sun, you’ll produce small but intense streaks or circles of colorBarrel distortion and vignetting in JEP’s are brilliantly adjusted by the in-camera software.Nighttime photography is especially important to me. Images are sharp, with good definition on illuminated objects. Lettering and other edges are sharp. At f/11, I got nice starbursts on single bulb lights and brilliant starbursts at f/16. As expected, other sources of light, such as double bulb lights and neon lights tend to “blow out” a bit with long exposures, but this is true of all lenses.Zooming - I prefer using the lens barrel to zoom in and out. The power zoom is good but the lever is at on the side of the barrel. I wish that it was higher up on the lens barrel, at 12:00 o’clock, where my index finger naturally falls. At least a few times, I have accidently changed the focal length.Someone pointed out that there’s a question of quality control with this lens. If so, I was a lucky one to get a good copy. It’s the only lens that I have been using for the past four months to do street photography, parades, general photography, and night photography.Every so often I bump into a lens that may not be in the mainstream, but which punches well above its price point. I add the Sony 16-50mm lens to this special group.

The poor and highly underestimated underdog of the E-mount lens family is actually a very good performer on APS-C Sony cams.It delivers excellent autofocus, excellent image stabilisation, is incredibly small and weighs practically nothing. Just don't ever use it for RAW images.I've used it for videos in poor lighting conditions, long exposure shots of the sky at night and even time-lapse clips during both day and night. The results were very good every time, obviously not as impressive as those you'd get from lens of the G or G Master family. The cons: (you have to have cons at such a low price) the manual focus ring control is reversed, it is inaccurate and lags (since it is fully electronic, it is dependent on the camera's computer responsiveness). Saving RAW files will give you badly distorted images - as others pointed out this lens is dependent on the camera's ability to perform software corrections. My A6300 performs better at this and completely transparently than many expensive and complicated softwares. I compensate by using the 'extra fine' setting for JPEG file quality.

I used to get rid of this lens every time I got a new camera. Not anymore. I have found that this little lens does well in most scenarios. Aperture is not the best. Hoping that Sony can come out with an updated version. However, it fits in most pockets and is reasonable for travel and vlogging. 8.5/10

Highly capable travel lens, and it's barely bigger than a body cap!
6 September 2018

It's a tiny, light, and fun lens. However in close inspection and in use, it proves to be rather sharp, reliable, and utterly effective at most things an average person does with a walk-around camera. The 16-50 range is fine and with the sharpness it has in the center, it can be cropped either in Sony camera's in-camera digital zoom beyond 50, or it can simply be cropped in software. It outperforms a lot of much larger and heavier kit-lens range glass too. It just works each time, and focus is fast and reliable too, when used with a modern A series. It is a APS-C lens but it does what it is designed for, very well. It is a APS-C lens but it does what it is designed for, very well. It does distort the image slightly at extreme ranges, but not enough to be bothersome unless one is looking closely at the results for flaws. My only peeve is that the lens does increase the power-up time for Sony A series camera, as it extends the barrel for shooting. But that is totally forgivable as it compacts to half the size when powered off, especially as a daily carry around or travel. At $300 new MSRP it is a questionable purchase for many, as for a little more, there are much more specialized lenses in the $500 range. But with a kit purchase, it is much more reasonable with it being less than $200 over the price of camera body only price. Also inthe used market these are a dime a dozen at $150 for a very decent barely used condition lens. It probably won't be your art lens to do something specific, but for everything other than those tasks, it certainly does a lot of great photography. Especially for something that is nearly as compact as a body cap! The photo of a A7 with a LA-EA4 Adapter and Minolta 28-135 vs a NEX6 with 16-50 kit. This pancake 16-50 does 95% of what this bigger combination does. At 1/4th the price, and less than 1/3 of the weight and size. So when it is mission-critical, I have the big rig, but if I am just traveling around town or around the world, I think hard and walk off with the smaller setup most of the time, and for a great reason.

For those of us who expect a handmade Hasselblad quality lens, this lens is not for you. But, for those of you who wants sharp, clean and contrasted images, this lens does the trick. When I got this lens with my SONY A6100 I said to myself, ok, its a kit lens it will do until I could afford something better.Well, I was wrong. This lens is fabulous . It gives sharp, contrasted photos all the time. For the pixel peepers among us, the lens was set at 1/60 sec @ 5.6 with an ISO of 400. Auto exposure. See my image below. The cost of the lens is around $300.00 and it is worth every penny.Try it out. You might be very pleased. Why only four stars? Because the lens is very small and hard to zoom with.

Painfully bad image quality

I got this lens with the a6500. Ive used many zoom lenses, including modern Nikon and Canon and Panasonic DSLR kit lenses. This lens falls far behind all of them. Its sized like a m4/3 lens but then extends to its real size. Its still overly small, with computerized corrections to make up for some of its inherent flaws. The image quality suffers, with hazy and glowing edges and lots of aberration. Most basic image quality issues, like CA and vignetting are correctable in camera or with raw files, but this lenss flaws go far beyond that. I do some photo editing for work, color correcting the files of non-professionals. While the other kit lenses are good enough not to stand out, I notice files shot with this lens and dread working on them. For photos I find it ... MoreI got this lens with the a6500. Its tiny, has OSS built in, and has a great focal range. This makes it a very good gimbal lens for 4K video. Image artifacts are lost in the motion blur and the small size makes it easy to use for a long amount of time. The OSS smooths out micro-jitters and the gimbal takes care of big movements.

Second replacement of the identical lens.
20 April 2023

This is my third identical lens. The first one came as kit lens as new with an alpha6000 body. After the warranty expired the first lens could not be zoomed in one direction. So I bought a second identical lens in used but pretty good condition. Recently, that lens developed a problem. It will not retract back when the camera is turned off. So I bought this third one in advertised Mint condition. Hope this one works for me.
