Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM Lens (SEL50F14GM)
Product Description Combining a favored wide-angle focal length with an especially bright design, versatile lens well-suited to landscape, nature, and street photography. Its wide-but-usable perspective is complemented by the f/1.4 maximum aperture, which excels in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, which significantly control spherical aberrations for a high degree of image sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a Nano AR coating has been applied to limit ghosting and lens flare for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. For controlling focus, a Direct Drive SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) is employed that is quick and quiet, and also lends more responsive control for manual focus operation. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design and fluorine-coated front lens element to support shooting in inclement conditions and a dedicated focus hold button, AF/MF switch, and manual aperture ring lend further control while shooting.

Pros: I've not had much time to use the lens properly yet to test image quality but I like the option to adjust the aperture manually and the fucus lock button as well as the new lockable lens cap.Cons: Sony has supplied lens with a fancy lens case but as with many lenses, except possibly long telephotos lenses they're superfluous & will never be used because the lens will either be mounted on a camera body or in a camera bag. This lens case is unnecessary & could be omitted to reduce the lens price.

This lens I did a lot of research on before I purchased and I compared this to the sigma and the Sony 1.2 50 mm G master. Most of the consensus was it's a no-brainer with purchasing this lens, it is incredibly fast, great with autofocusing and that iris lock button is great to have. Also very and I mean very sharp. Also lightweight and compact compared to other lenses which makes it more of a joy to carry it around and shoot more often instead of always carrying heavy equipment. I am definitely having fun with this lens and if you're in the market for a gmaster I definitely say go this route. You will not be disappointed.

This new lens from Sony is excellent. IQ is as sharp or sharper any other high quality lens (including other GM lenses) I have owned and its features (e.g. aperture ring and focus hold buttons) make this lens fast and efficient to use during a photoshoot. Compact for a f1.4 fast 50mm lens making it an absolute joy to use.

TL;DR - Tack sharp images, buttery bokeh and fast focus.I really like the size and weight, it's right in line with the 24 and 35 GM. My previous 50 1.4 was a tank and really made the camera feel unbalanced. It's one of those things you just deal with in your quest for better photos until you get the same quality without the hassle, then there is no turning back. It may only have two focus motors, but I've not felt that it is slow or should have 4 motors like the 1.2. In fact, my keeper rate has increased dramatically. With my previous 1.4 lens I would have 1-2 out of every 10 images with missed focus. This new GM lens has moved the goal post andnow it's more like 1 miss out of every 25 images. I've actually had a shoot with zero missed focus shots from this ... I've actually had a shoot with zero missed focus shots from this lens, just awesome.A YouTuber quoted this as the Goldilocks lens that will be just right for most photographers and I believe he is right. It allows you to step into a 50mm GM lens but not pay the premium price that comes with the 1.2 version. If youare considering this lens as an upgrade to an existing 50mm or possibly as a first prime just do it. :) Get this one and you won't be disappointed. Attached are some prom photos shot at 1.4 for reference.
This is the first GM I own, and I'm in LOVE with it. I own 24-105G and 50.4GM. I use the zoom lens for travel all in one, and 50 for portrait. The aperture is incredible. I can literally do portrait shooting indoor without any special lighting equipment. I've compared 50.2 and 50.4 A LOT before purchasing the product and I hardly could tell the difference between the two. One stop aperture is not significant.
Fantastic little lens. Love the weight and form factor and not to mention exceptional AF and sharpness. Worth the price. I was torn between sigmas new 50mm lens and this lens. So glad I went with it. It helps to have a light weight lens for walk-around, travel and low light.
There are some solid arguments in favor of this lens. It's smaller than the F1.2 version, it's sharp corner to corner, the build quality is great, as is the autofocus when being used with Sony cameras. However, I returned mine because I prefer the bokeh of the g master f1.2. We all know you have to pay a lot for that extra 2% of quality, but what can I say? I want that 2%. For most people this lens is probably good.
At 1.1 lbs./516g, this fast lens is relatively light and balances very nicely on my Sony A7R IV. Wide open at f1.4, sharpness and contrast are excellent from the center through the midpoints while only falling off slightly in the corners. Full sensor resolution, including the corners, then gradually increase step by step until the optimum range of f5.6-f11, only falling off afterwards due to diffraction. Attached is a downsized (due to B&H requirements) chart showing my resolution tests with 100% crops of the top left corner, mid top left, center, mid top right and top right corner comparing f1.4 to f5.6.I have no complaints about this lens. For everyday images, including landscapes, street photography, small groups of people, vacations, it just makes it very hard ... For everyday images, including landscapes, street photography, small groups of people, vacations, it just makes it very hard to take a bad picture with it. In most cases it also works very well in the studio for or larger portraits. A small drawback however due to its sharpness can be in headshots where the rendering in some cases, particularly for females, can be a little too clinical. But not really too bad at all since that can easily be taken care of in Photoshop.I've waited a long time to add a 50mm normal lens to my Sony kit. After using this lens for two weeks, I'm glad I waited.
One day with this lens and it is already providing exceptional image quality and versatility. The lens is a not too heavy, but it feels solid and well-built in the hand. The autofocus is fast and accurate, and the lens is incredibly sharp, even at wide apertures. The bokeh is smooth and buttery, making it perfect for portrait photography. So far, the lens has performed well in low-light situations. The only downside to this lens is the high price, but you definitely get what you pay for in terms of quality and performance. Plus, its relatively cheaper than most other G Master lenses. Overall, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 is an excellent choice for photographers who demand the very best in image quality and performance.
This lens is fabulous, it's light and small enough to go anywhere. This is the only lens that I took on my last trip and it was all I needed. This nifty fifty was hooked to a Sony A7R V so I was able to crop and get just what I wanted in the frame. Beautiful clean low light closeups and crisp landscapes. Excellent choice.
