The weight is considerably noticed on days I am shooting 12 plus hours. The response on the focus and manual mechanics is noticeable and critically better when I needed it. Image quality might not be as noticeable to some, but shooting indoors I can see eyes that look even more glassy than what My First Gen could do.The minimum auto focus was a big shift and there seems to be a moment of hesitation before it comes through and grabs a subject, but it is a huge improvement from the first gen lens.The most noticeable difference though was in it's overall performance when shootung a burst. It is so smooth and seamless on full burst, that i wasn't certain if I landed the shots until I reviewed the card.If you are on the fence about upgrading and your First Gen Sony GM 70 - 200mm lens is your primary I strongly recommend the investment. I also recommend buying from Best Buy, their staff are experts in customer care, and with the Totatech membership you get two year protection automatically. When you are buying professional equipment, it quickly pays for itself.

But this new 2nd edition is significantly lighter, phenomenal image quality across the zoom and f-stop range, and the added features are a bonus. The auto-focus is fast and accurate which is critical for the type of photography and video work I do. The image qualify is so good, I replaced 3 other lenses with this single lens (Sony 70-200 F4 G plus 85mm and 135mm prime lenses). The aperture ring comes in handy for event photography where I often shoot/experiment with multiple different settings for each subject I photograph. This lens is expensive, but this lens replaced 3 other lenses and I sold the other lenses to cover 1/2 the cost of this lens. Faster than f2.8 would be ... Amazing lens! I film events such as weddings and take photos too. I own the first generation and the upgrade is definitely significant in many ways that makes shooting easier. The first generation would hunt focus sometimes especially when you're in an environment where lighting isn't ideal. I have not experienced this with this Mark II. Also the weight difference is huge. You may think 30% isn't as much but when I was using the first generation, my hands and arms would fatigue after an hour. Not with this new version! The stabilization also improved! I have filmed using this lens hand held and combined with my Sony a7s III IBIS, the footage always comes out steady and no micro jitters! Spend more on the newer version and you will not regret it.
This lens is everything your read in online reviews and than some.The focusing on a7mk3 is blazing fast and precise. Compared to Sony FE 70-200 f4 hardly drains the battery even in FULL mode. Shooting in FULL vs. LIMITED focusing range practically does't affect battery life. I do not shoot landscapes, so sharpness across the frame and vignetting is not an issue for me but they are there and clearly visible.Unfortunately at the long end this lens demonstrates a strange non-linear bokeh on Sony a7mk3. It works as expected at 70-105mm (possibly up to 135mm). Past 150mm it becomes glowy with slow fall of of the background sharpness. My FE 70-200 f4 and Canon EF 70-200 f4 mk2 are my go to lenses, so I was totally puzzled by this phenomenon. Disabled all in camera ... Shooting in FULL vs. LIMITED focusing range practically does't affect battery life. I do not shoot landscapes, so sharpness across the frame and vignetting is not an issue for me but they are there and clearly visible.Unfortunately at the long end this lens demonstrates a strange non-linear bokeh on Sony a7mk3. It works as expected at 70-105mm (possibly up to 135mm). Past 150mm it becomes glowy with slow fall of of the background sharpness. My FE 70-200 f4 and Canon EF 70-200 f4 mk2 are my go to lenses, so I was totally puzzled by this phenomenon. Disabled all in camera corrections - no effect. Put on Sony a7mk2 - works perfectly. The only rational I can think of is that the new optical formula causes sensor blooming on Sony a7mk3.In short, I were to shoot a wedding with this lens and Sony a7mk3, I'd be perfectly comfortable photographing the bride but not the groom. I hope Sony will perfect this design and apply it to Sony FE 70-200 f4 mk2 with lighter faster focusing, shorter MFD and better weather sealing.
I have only used this lens once (at a children's birthday party) so I will know more when I use it more extensively, but I am very impressed so far. The bokeh is gorgeous. Auto focus is instantaneous on running children so it should work on wildlife as well. I saw no vignetting, barrel distortion or chromatic aberration even wide open. I love the constant f2. Makes it easy to use at higher shutter speeds and low ISO, essential for clean, crisp images. My main camera body is the Sony A7rIV. At 62 megapixels, it shows any weaknesses in the lens and my technique. The images taken with this lens were clean. There is not enough good things one can say about this lens. The lighter smaller package is a huge bonus that many landscape and event photographers will appreciate. The first thing I recommend you do is get yourself a better arca compatible foot to be able to mind it much easier.This is one of those lenses that can win over anyone to the sony system. The crisp images it produces with that lightning fast AF is just unbeatable. This is a lens that one has to rent to truly appreciate just how much of a masterpiece it really is. Sharp at f/2.8 and even sharper stopped down to f/4 and f/5.6. I love that it has internal zooming, so there is less chance for dust to enter the lens and less weight shifting when zooming in or out. This second version is also lighter, which I appreciate when shooting hand-held. The only problem is the length, but I can just fit this lens attached to a camera, a second camera with a 24-70mm lens, and 1-2 prime lenses into my Atlas Athlete backpack. I was glad I had a telephoto zoom as I captured some photos I would not have gotten with my other lenses. Since then, I’ve taken it with me and looked for reasons to use it to give a different perspective compared to wider lenses.After about five months, I’ve had no issues or complaints about this lens. It has been worth it for me, even with the steep price. I now prefer to wait to save up for native glass if it offers high image quality and fast focusing.
