At the front centre, where the lid joins the body, is a tiny rectangular slot which momentarily lights up to show the state of charge when the box is opened. Overall the package speaks of thoughtful careful design.I am not going to be a typical user of this product. I am a full-time Carer on call 24/7 which means I take my music when I can. I live in rural Scotland and do not listen to music in the car as one needs complete attention to compete with deer etc and large farm vehicles. Additionally, I have had to wear Hearing Aids for a number of years and whilst the modern ones are excellent, they are not the best medium for listening to music. Accordingly, I believe these headphones may be an answer to a prayer. In short, I am delighted with all aspects of the LinkBuds, their appearance, their convenience and superb sound quality. I am now free to engage in a variety of tasks both within the house and out without the constraints of wires or fear of over-ear headphones falling off whilst actively working, walking or using my cameras but most of all, the ability to enjoy music again as I did in the past. I’ve not yet had time to explore the full potential of the App that accompanies them and look forward to that. I think they are remarkable value for money considering the quality of the sound in such a small convenient package and the obvious build quality. For the moment I have found no downside and don’t expect to.Having been a lover of music from the days when the usual source was a 12” LP and having owned excellent Hi-Fi systems I am still looking for ways to get the best reproduction possible in an endeavour to re-create the sounds I remember. Over the years I have tried several types of headphones and currently use Over-Ear, wired; excellent but has the downside of occasionally seeing your phone crash to the floor when you forget it was wired. The LinkBuds have totally obviated the need for this,They are no more intrusive than my hearing aids and I find I can wear them for long periods quite comfortably, the bluetooth connection is total and constant and the sound quality vastly superior to that I am currently getting. Whilst I have only used The LinkBuds for a relatively short period - I am still exploring the potential of the App - I have been surprised, delighted and amazed by the quality of the sound. Listening to some of my favourite pieces I have been transported back to a time when I could hear all the nuances of the music. I have always been fond of Classical Guitar and occasionally hearing the rasp of the player’s fingers on the strings is something I haven’t heard for a long time, I can now discern the words in vocals and piano music is so crisp & clear. I am not qualified nor would I want to discuss the technicalities of sound but listening via the Buds there is a separation between the tones, a clarity and cleanness that for me has been missing. It’s almost as if a mist has cleared and the soundscape is sharp and detailed.I cannot comment on the sound cancelling qualities of the Buds other than in my own circumstances but they are more than adequate to cope with TV and phone conversations that occur in the room in which I am enjoying my music.

I think these would be perfect for people who like to listen to music or audio books while enjoying outdoor activities like jogging, walking, or simply working in the yard. I think these would be perfect for people who like to listen to music or audio books while enjoying outdoor activities like jogging, walking, or simply working in the yard. It’s important to be able to hear what’s happening around you in those situations for obvious safety reasons. If you are looking for the overall best sound quality, especially focusing on the lower bass range of frequencies, then the open-air design is clearly not the best choice for you.The Linkbuds Open earbuds come in a stylish and pocketable rectangular case, which may at first appear confusing as to which is the bottom, and which is the top lid. Just remember the base has a matte-like finish and the lid is high gloss black, and you’ll be fine. The charging port at the rear of the case and below the hinge uses the common and universal USB-C connector, making it easy to share a cord with other similar devices. Almost everything I use now has a USB-C connector. On my case, the Sony logo is very faint, almost not legible for some reason. The earbuds feature a rather unique donut design that sits inside the outer ear canal, and I quickly discovered that at least in my case, it does require reading the instruction manual to insert them in your ears properly and in the right orientation. A small, pointed piece of soft pliable rubber fits into a crease above the ear canal to hold them securely without adding any uncomfortable pressure. It’s there to aid in keeping the earbuds from falling out during more vigorous activity like exercising. Note also that these are a one-design-fits-all, so there is really no way to adjust the fit and that could be an issue for some. The most important question when it comes to reviewing earbuds is
how do they sound? So far, I have been impressed with sound quality and just as important, they are quite comfortable. Deep bass is lacking, but that’s to be expected with the simple physics of open-air design as mentioned earlier.Like a lot of earbuds and wireless headphones these days, an app from Sony called Sound Connect is a necessity to install on your smartphone to get the most from your Linkbuds. The app offers several configuration options that include battery information, sound enhancements based on fit, a sound equalizer, and several more customization and optimization options. Additional features like 360 Reality Audio require a paid subscription, but it does offer with a trial version and the sample version in the app is remarkable. Some of the features that I liked most certainly include the equalizer, which I set to a bass boost preset. Another is head gestures, which allows head movements to answer or deny incoming phone calls. I always turn on any options that maximize sound quality, which includes a setting for Bluetooth connection quality and LE Audio Priority. If you listen to CD’s or MP3, the Linkbuds have a setting to enable DSEE, which is Sony’s own technology to enhance sound quality from compressed low-quality audio. There’s even an option to take an image of your ears to ensure proper fit for the best sound quality and comfort.Sony advertises a battery life of 22 hours with the charging case. A simple 3-minute charge provides 60 minutes of listening. I’ve been testing the earbuds for several days now and the earbuds remain fully charged while the case is still at 50%.For those times when I want a fully immersed music listening experience, I still prefer a “closed ear” set of earbuds complete with noise cancellation to block out all ambient sound. But for daily use when I need to be aware of what’s going on around me, I find the Sony Linkbuds Open to be the perfect and preferred choice. Rating these becomes difficult honestly as the sound might not be the best there is, but when judged in the open-air earbud category and for their intended use, I believe they deserve at least a 4-star above-average rating for their thoughtful design, decent sound and abundant features.

The Sound Connect App has some very useful help including an equaliser to adjust the sound to your own preferences, and for different uses (eg music or speech prioritisation). The pause in playback when the wearer speaks is excellent and the automatic return to playback is faultless. When activated this does mean the wearer is prevented from singing along out loud, but no one wants to be disturbed by my poor singing ability! There is an ability to change the playback control (eg volume, forward track etc) between the ear buds (left/right) to suit individual preferences and I found these commands worked best when tapping beside the bud rather than tapping the buds themselves, but I noticed an option to adjust the sensitivity. The option to accept/decline calls using head gestures (nod/shake) works well. Most importantly the sound quality is first class and the noise cancelling cuts background sound while still allowing speech to pass through - with options to adjust the sensitivity. Diary and message announcements are very clear. The battery life is super, I have regular days where I spend 4-6 hours travelling by train and I have had no problems with battery life. All in all, stylish, small and easily carried in a pocket, comfortable to wear for long periods with excellent sound quality and a good battery life, with lots of functionality for the user to adapt for their own preferences. I recommend them.

I recently got the latest Sony LinkBud Fit as a present to replace some old noise cancelling buds which were dropped into water and gave up. I decided to try a premium brand as I have several other Sony products that have lasted well and given excellent audio quality. The first thing that stands out is the packaging being last entirely cardboard / paper and very neatly done. I also admire the use of recycled plastics in the device / housing. The first thing that stands out is the packaging being last entirely cardboard / paper and very neatly done. I also admire the use of recycled plastics in the device / housing. This is the way forward and Sony have been doing this for a few years now, which is commendable. The size of the bud casing is a surprise with it being quite bloated, it isn’t going to be an easy fit into trouser pockets. The buds themselves are also quite chunky and have a soft silicone wing to help rest against the ear and hold it in place when performing more aggressive movements such as workout or running. There are a wide range of the silicone tips to fit your ear but it took me a while to get the best size. Ranges from SS, S, M and L. I found that they held in quite well but my ear doesn’t quite fit with the wing so I’m reliant on the tip fit. They fit is comfortable and the bonus is that the new buds also are more water resistant than my previous units so feel less of a risk when washing the car this time. The Sony Connect App was a great addition and when setting the units checked the fit via pictures and sound along with having an equalizer option for those that need to personalize their audio sound. You can also set the noise cancelling in the app or tap the buds or around that area of your head to change settings.Audio quality has been very good and I have taken the opportunity to upgrade to a streaming service that plays 360 audio files to get the full effect. I’ve found this very good but not sure I need the premium cost for my daily commute. Battery life did concern me, given the size of the units, but I’ve had no issues so far and when not in use the units are in the case charging back up anyway – so it’s a bit like range anxiety with the electric car i.e. not a real issue. My main niggle is the noise cancelling appears to be a bit schizophrenic in the sense that in the auto mode it can randomly let noises through and then block others but I wonder if new software updates will resolve this. I have used other manufacturer devices that have been more effective at cancelling the noise but I like the fact that these should let me hear the things that I need to – so it’s under review 😊 That said I’ve had similar priced units that have been far less effective.

PROs:First Impression on unboxing is that these appear to be a nicely crafted product with suitably minimal packaging and accessories, classic current Sony style.Once out of the box you are not disappointed, they are exceptionally well made with nice detail and the case is compact and nice with an almost pearlescent finish to the top. They are an interesting concept of being able to have music running as a soundtrack to your day and I wasn't sure if this would be for me.In reality I loved it but couldn’t use them all the time due to the demands of my day.The sound quality is good, not fantastic but very good. I was pleasantly surprised just how good considering you have ambient noise creeping in but, an enjoyable experience listening to some hi res reggae on my walk to town. They are almost an open loop so you are never going to get that completely immersive experience from in ear headphones (I have been spoilt with my WF-1000XM4 headphones which are stunning). That being said it is a very pleasing listening experience with enough breadth of soundscape to make them enjoyable for most of my music collection. The big benefit is in the open design, you can genuinely have a soundtrack running and conduct conversations easily, respond to sounds in the environment and function as if you don't have them in. The only issue really is you find yourself grooving along to whatever you're listening to whilst talking to someone, which (I'm told) is quite disconcerting as you are dancing to a soundtrack only you can hear!Makes me laugh though when I think about some other uses like listening to the football whilst at a lecture, church, wedding etc.Great for phone calls and really quick pairing once it's been set up.Not a bad price point either as they are a really different listening experience to anything else I own.I would absolutely use these on a regular basis were it not for the downside below.CON:They simply don't fit my ears well at all and I can't make them do so however much I adjust them. I spend my days catching them, picking them up or shoving them in more. It is a major design flaw for me but maybe I have odd shaped ears! My daughter who has quite small ears just couldn't get them to fit in her ears at all. This is a massive failing of the design Sony and one I wouldn't expect from you as I am a 30 years devotee of Sony audio products so for me this is really surprising. It's a total deal breaker for me so I would like to see some sort of fitment accessories or opportunity to try before buying as they will simply be useless to someone like my daughter.Personally I am hoping for Sony to release some sort of rubber cover or different fitting kit to help to keep using them otherwise they are going in the drawer and I'll carry on with my WF-1000XM4 beauties.Overall VerdictGet them if you want a really good listening experience with a difference but there are issues with limitations for the audiophiles and the fitting.Recommendations for Sony:Make a feature for the tap controls so you can change from listening to music to background music. It's a great feature so why not make it more accessible.Produce a fitting kit of some sort to make these things more viable for people, I'm not sure of the pool of test subjects but I'm really surprised I can't make them work!

I often listen to music & podcasts at home whilst the family are watching TV & use a choice of two Sony headphones with & without noise cancelling functions. They both have excellent sound quality but away from home I won’t use them as they look a little clumsy when travelling & I would prefer something smaller & less intrusive. I’ve always been a bit apprehensive using ear buds as I wrongly thought that they would be uncomfortable to wear & they would easily fall out.I now have Sony Link Buds for when I’m travelling & my perception of this type of system has changed. They came in small but sturdy lidded box with a rather novel inner liner similar to a small chest of drawers, one drawer contained the charging lead, one drawer held the instructions & another drawer a selection of spare ear inserts. All very neat & clever. The buds are contained in a lidded plastic travel box which doubles up as the charger, a small but sturdy container that would easily store in a pocket, handbag or rucksack. I simply removed the buds from the box & inserted them into my ears, I was amazed how comfortable they feel & how secure they are, I scanned the QR code from the box to get instructions, the buds connected up to Bluetooth extremely quickly & I chose a podcast.Within seconds they are working perfectly, the whole process was incredibly seamless, typical Sony. Sound quality was surprisingly good & although I deliberately shook my head vigorously to see how secure they would be, nothing came out of place. I would have no issues walking around with these buds in my ear, they are comfortable & sound quality is excellent. My attitude to ear buds has completely changed & they are my preferred choice when walking the dog or travelling around. They come with spare inserts to suit all ages & size of ears, the charging cable is short enough to carry around when travelling & long enough to plug into a USB socket without it being an issue, a charging light is mounted externally on the outer base of the holder. The Sony app is available if you wish to back up your settings & for tips. The buds & case are the usual high standards & build quality you expect from Sony. I highly recommend these link buds.

Since we are in an overly saturated headphone market, specifically wireless earbuds, it can be difficult for companies to stand out amongst the competition. However, being the innovators as they are known for, Sony has somehow done just that with their new LinkBuds Open wireless earbuds. Please, allow me to explain. My wife, specifically, has always had an issue with finding wireless earbuds because of the size of her ears; they have relatively small openings therefore many of the earbuds I have used don’t work in her ears and tend to either not seat or seal correctly and/or constantly fall out regardless of what she is doing. Over the years, we have gone through several design and brand options and she ultimately just ends up going back to what she has been accustomed to in her, in my opinion, poorly designed well-known phone maker’s design that she still has issues with or simply giving up and using her speakerphone which is an issue considering she owns an in-home daycare where the noise level can be quite high. When Sony’s new LinkBud Open design was revealed, I was sure that we would end up in the same boat and figured I would just end up with another pair of earbuds for me that she couldn’t use. It was worth a LONG shot and I knew I ultimately wasn’t sacrificing anything because I would end up with a great pair of earbuds having experience with Sony’s line of headphones and what they are capable of.The LinkBuds Open came in a small, extraordinarily plain box with little to no advertising information or technical features noted on the outside therefore you’ll have to do some homework to know what you are investing in. Even the small, gloss black charging case they earbuds come with isn’t something you would do a double take on however, as I’m sure everyone would agree on, it’s what’s inside that really counts. From prior experience, I think this is something that Sony’s headphone line has been known for and has become somewhat of an internet sensation as they continually rate higher than many other high-end headphone manufacturers. Perhaps this is because Sony has been in the headphone market for longer than most starting all the way back to before the Walkman and their trademark orange foam headphones came to existence (please create me a high-end retro remake of these, pretty please). One thing you’ll want to do before trying it yourself is to take the time and watch or review the guide on how to fit your new earbuds; they are not like many other earbuds that either dangle in your ear or use a vinyl or foam tip that squeezes into your ear canal, many of which have active noise cancelling (ANC) features. This does have a bit of a learning curve because if you don’t do it correctly, they will just fall out. After a quick initial charge and syncing the LinkBuds to the Sony Smart Controller headphone application via Bluetooth, I was ready to rock. Having used numerous Sony headphones in the past, I know their focus is typically on the sound, specifically the loudness and deep bass. This especially rings true with these which is fantastic for a lifelong audiophile and considering how small earbuds are. Using large 11mm drivers and high-power neodymium magnets, they are incredibly loud in comparison to other earbuds I have tested, some of which are over double the price. Within the app there are several equalizer settings to tinker with including a manual mode and two custom EQ settings. There is also an interesting background music effect feature that will mimic background noises such as a cafĂ© or your living room. I haven’t quite figured out what I would use this feature for but perhaps it is something someone else might want to use :/. I would recommend having the app analyze your ear shape to ensure a correct fitting; it’s very quick and easy to do using your smartphone. Back to my wife’s small ears, I was shocked to find out that they seated in her ears even better than they did in mine and were a perfect fit; I couldn’t believe it after all these years of trial and error. One of the first things I noticed after setting them up is there is not an option in the app for ANC and, as I’ll explain later, this ends up being a great feature in my wife’s case. If you’re specifically in the market for ANC earbuds, you may still want to consider these as an option as they somehow still do the trick in blocking out unwanted noises while still allowing you to hear what’s going on around you, I assume hence the “Open” name. One of the features you can enable in the app is the ability to sense when you start talking or someone else starts talking to you and will pause what you re listening to. After a short amount of time or using the tap features, it will resume play. This is convenient for us, as parents of little children, as you can enjoy your music or podcasts but still know when someone else is trying to get your attention. You can customize certain tap features to perform functions such as automatically opening a music streaming service. Sony also has a cool 360 Reality Audio feature that you can use via another app and the LinkBuds come with a 30-day free trial.Considering the plethora of headphones and earbuds I have been through over decades, we have finally found a pair that actually did have more of a universal fit compared to other manufacturers that made this claim and ended up not working for my wife. Even if that weren’t the case, the sound that Sony headphones and earbuds is able to produce is, in most cases, far superior than the competition and at a much more reasonable price compared to most high-end manufacturers.

I’ve not tried every different option yet, but have now set them up to the way I personally prefer.I used the instructions and interactive tool supplied to get the LinkBuds fitted correctly into my ear. It took a couple of attempts but when fitted correctly they are comfortable to wear and the open design lets you hear your surroundings. I initially thought this was a bit of a gimmick but was amazed how well it works.A quick charge and I set the LinkBuds up using a number of different sources including my iPhone, iPad and Sony Bravia TV and performance across all of my devices is very impressive. The ability to automatically switch between multiple sources is a great option that makes using the LinkBuds so much easier than my last headphones.Sound quality is very good across all frequencies and improves considerably when using the equaliser function, however, sometimes I feel the maximum volume could be set a little higher. My noise cancelling headphones are louder but I can understand the caution when they are designed for using inside you ear.Included with the LinkBuds is a 360 Reality Audio demonstration link and when accessed, you see the true ability of the LinkBuds when a totally immersive sound suddenly erupts through them. It really is just like being in a concert hall and demonstrates the capability and performance of the LinkBuds.I also walk my dogs and listen to both Audiobooks and Podcasts whilst walking. They perform really well with impressive clarity but the added ability to hear background sounds makes these the ideal walking partner. The playback pause feature when you speak works perfectly, again a godsend when out walking. The Sony Sound Connect App also allows you to personalise the LinkBuds with the ability to initiate and change various functions either by tapping the LinkBuds or by simple head gestures.Since I’ve been using them the Battery life appears excellent. The only criticism is that for some reason, the USB C cable supplied is very short which means the case hangs from the cable as it can’t reach the surface. It’s not a problem as the entire LinkBuds with charging case weighs less than 42 grams but seems strange why Sony would supply such a short cable. Finally, I would say that they are exactly what you would expect from a Sony product. Exceptional build quality, easy to use and performs really well. I would have no hesitation recommending the LinkBuds.

the disappointing appearance! Upon unboxing the item, I was surprised to find what I thought was dirt and grime smeared over the charging case, but after a couple of wipes I soon realised it was in fact a poorly executed marbled plastic effect. Very disappointing and totally unnecessary! Plain gloss would have been more than satisfactory. Secondly the supporting arm on the ear bud, whilst effective, does not score highly on style! And finally, I found the proportions of the charging case to be fairly clunky, you certainly won’t forget you’ve put this in your pocket. However, if like me you’d rather have a memorable listening experience than looking cool walking down the street then these earbuds are seriously worth considering.I’ve used these inside the home, office and workshop. Outside I’ve used them walking in the countryside, busy urban areas and whilst on public transport. And for me they have excelled in every environment, largely due to the adaptive hearing feature which can automatically interpret your surroundings and switch between ‘noise cancelling’ and ‘ambient sound’ modes. If you are walking along a busy road with lots of traffic the ambient sound will ensure you don’t get complacent and squished by an oncoming vehicle. If you find yourself on a busy bus with lots of background chatter, the noise cancelling will allow you to enjoy your current audiobook intimately and with crystal clear clarity. The clear, rich tone delivered by the earbuds is a delight whether you prefer listening to spoken word such as audiobooks & podcasts or instrumental music & singing. Personally, I’ve enjoyed the noise cancelling feature far more than I thought I would, it’s a triumph!A few of other points to consider for me we’re that although very comfortable to begin with I do start to get mild earache after around an hour or so of continuous use. Also, battery life was a little shorter than I expected
but maybe that’s because I’ve been enjoying them so much!? They are easy to clean which is something often overlooked, and the standard tapping feature works well for adjusting volume, skipping tracks etc.Overall, they have exceeded expectations on sound quality and I’m confident I’ll be enjoying for many years to come! Next time though Sony
 drop the dodgy marble effect!!

I am so happy for the first time in my life i am able to use ear buds that incredible for me.They have a great little app called sound connect so when your buds are paired you can go in and use everything in the menu’s interface to customise these for your own needs and also do a firmware upgrade for future advancements in the product to which is also great that’s another big thumbs up for me with these from Sony. The are of good build quality and super comfortable for anyone looking buy buy a new pair of buds with a difference to where I say if i find them great to use then and super comfortable without fatigue in any way then I will only assume they are great for everyone. These are the future of all ear buds if you ask me.All in all these things are incredible in all ways from the sound quality and convenience of just leaving them in so you’re still in touch with the world around you and most of all incredibly comfortable.Would I recommend them truthfully! You would be silly not to buy them they have the best of all worlds.
