a real collector's item! I've owned it for many years now and it's still functional, I still play with it from time to time! as you can clearly see the joystick is worn out... a proof of the many hours of gameplay that is always enthralling and fun! obviously video game graphics are not super detailed like the orier consoles but the charm of the first PlayStation is indisputable!

A fun but flawed blast from the past.

Fun for the nostalgia of it all and loaded with some great games, but overall a flawed system. Unlike the SNES and NES classics, Sony was smart enough to include 2 controllers. But they failed to learn from the shortcomings of Nintendo's systems. Controller lengths are very short and games only hold 1 save at a time, which is ridiculous. Also they failed to add a reset button to the controller, something that could have given them a big advantage over Nintendo's systems. Instead, like Nintendo, you have to press the reset button on the system itself to get back to the home screen (Sorry Sony, but I'm just too lazy for that). Another big drawback is the price tag. A great Retro Emulation Station, and a not so good retro cash-grab.

Only a few of the games are any great, the emulation is somewhat shoddy (for the PAL region games that are on this system for some reason) and a lot of the games on the system are on the Playstation Store for the PS3 and the Vita. If you're gonna get this system, get it to hack the ever-living God out of it in order to play other PS1 games and use RetroArch (Hacking this thing is fairly safe as long as you use programs that don't actually mess with any of the internal software). That being said, a few games on this system are still great fun to play (I'm looking at you, Wild Arms), so this wouldn't be a bad purchase for someone that just wants to experience a taste of some memorable games from the PS1's library (And a few games that deserve to be left in your ... MoreOnly a few of the games are any great, the emulation is somewhat shoddy (for the PAL region games that are on this system for some reason) and a lot of the games on the system are on the Playstation Store for the PS3 and the Vita. After all the negative videos on YouTube spouting awful emulation and game selection I was nicely surprised.First of all I think it's a great game list - a nice mix of blockbusters and gems that may have passed you by back in the day. I'd never played Intelligent Qube before and now I'm addicted! I would replace Rainbow Six with something decent in a perfect world, however.Emulation is also excellent for the most part - the only game with noticeable issues so far is Ridge Racer - it turns on the tunnel audio reverb at random times - it's really quite annoying. There are also framerate issues but overall it's still a smooth, very playable experience.I know a lot of people have been jumping up and down about certain games running at 50hz but I haven't noticed it - ... MoreAfter all the negative videos on YouTube spouting awful emulation and game selection I was nicely surprised.First of all I think it's a great game list - a nice mix of blockbusters and gems that may have passed you by back in the day. Tekken 3 runs fast enough for this slow old man!The hardware is incredibly well made and overall it offers insane value for money. All in all the PS Classic is a neat little collectable that does a great job of taking you for a stroll down memory lane. I've already put quite a few hours into playing on this thing and I've only had it for a day!

Bought this due to the price drop after its poor reception to load BleemSync on it and use it for general purpose emulation. Before modifying the system, I checked it out and probably had a more favorable reaction to the included titles but overall also find the titles don't do enough to exemplify the PlayStation's library. The emulation quality was OK, but didn't work any harder than to bring back the basic PSX experience with reasonable accuracy and speed.BleemSync successfully enabled the ability to load my own titles which emulated as reasonably well as the included titles, but the process to load and maintain it is not for the non-technical computer user. The BleemSync bundled RetroArch has a mix of bugs and perfect execution, but is quite acceptable for ... MoreBought this due to the price drop after its poor reception to load BleemSync on it and use it for general purpose emulation. Before modifying the system, I checked it out and probably had a more favorable reaction to the included titles but overall also find the titles don't do enough to exemplify the PlayStation's library. It's worth it for $39.99 - but dont pay more!

Honestly, the Playstation 1 (psone/psx) has not held up very well over time. This system (and the games) feels very dated, looks terrible, and honestly isnt a very fun experience. Some classic game systems will still stand the test of time (Nes, Snes, etc). The PS1 does not. The game choices could be way better, and many of the "flagship" games that should be on here are not. It's ok for $39.99.... definitely not the $129.99 price point at release. Most people are buying this unit to modify it and put more games on it, and if you are going to buy it for that purpose then its great. For me, im not looking to do that, so basically I'm only going to be playing 2 or 3 games on the unit that are preinstalled (resident evil, etc). I was going to get this on pre-order but the more I found out about it the less enthusiastic I became until I cancelled my pre-order fearing the worst. I bought this in mid May 2019 for 35 and I'm truly happy that I didn't pay any more for it. The only thing that makes this worth the purchase is the autobleem community. This is not as polished as the Nintendo mini console's but a good purchase for modding as most of the game are meh!! But come to think of it, this was a next gen console that did 3D without many good games at its launch, BUT IT WAS 3D. Sadly it's only redeeming feature untill the really good games started rolling out for it. So, yes it is an overhyped console that took a while to get good games. Also, people bought it as a CD player as it rivalled the more expensive Philips CD player in sound quality (another reason why it sold so well). Two games missing from the PlayStation Classic which defined it are Parapa the Rapper and Silent Hill (Twisted Metal and Rainbow Six should not be here).

So this isn't perfect... but this brings me back
29 December 2018

I recently bought this system, reading up on the tidal wave of bad reviews. When I unboxed it and heard that iconic startup theme, it brought me back to my childhood. Now sure, there are some flaws, but this alone is worth it. Playing tekken 3 with my friend as we were both kids again is such an amazing feeling. And yes, the games are slower than usual, but I haven't played the system in years and I could notice it slightly. For the people who have not experienced these games or the classic playstation 1, they should definitely buy this product, especially since it's on sale for basically half price. I also hacked my playstation, getting more games such as X Men Mutant Academy, Soul Blade, and Street Fighter Ex Plus 2 which is also a must if you aren't satisfied ... MoreI recently bought this system, reading up on the tidal wave of bad reviews. Works fine if you have access to a USB keyboard during setup
17 December 2018

To all the people complaining about games running in 50Hz, do your research before reviewing a product please. This system runs the PCSX open source emulator. If you plug in a USB keyboard and press escape, you can change the 50Hz setting to 60Hz with little difficulty, along with other settings. No, it doesn't upscale the graphics, and quite frankly shouldn't. This system is supposed to behave like the original, not change the experience. And analog sticks weren't released with the original system either, they came later. They aren't necessary. The missing 5VDC 1A AC adapter is a little weird, but I have a few extra phone chargers so I really don't care. The USB controllers are a nice feature. I know this is a really late review, especially considering I bought it just after Christmas, but having just reviewed the Sega Genesis Mini, I was reminded about my purchase of this piece of... plastic. What hasn't been said already? Strange pick of games (a few gems here like Rayman), half of them run on European PAL 50Hz instead of American NTSC 60Hz, no included AC adapter, terrible emulator, and games included that really need the Dual Shock controller to enjoy, like Metal Gear Solid. The game select screen is a mess. Not many options unless you can find a USB keyboard that can access all the hidden options like changing all the games back to NTSC. I'm not sure what Sony was thinking, other than trying to quickly and cheaply capitalize on Nintendo's success. ... MoreI know this is a really late review, especially considering I bought it just after Christmas, but having just reviewed the Sega Genesis Mini, I was reminded about my purchase of this piece of... plastic. What hasn't been said already?
