But times have changes now. With the evolution of consoles, Sony has finally listened to its fans and transformed the look of its controller. I was excited with the two-tone design, bulkier body and textured grip of the original Dualsense that comes with the console and just as I noticed that Sony didn’t color its trademark geometric shaped buttons, I started picturing just how good the black variant would look when it comes out eventually. It took a while for me to get my hands on this one and I have to say that it looks way more stylish and attractive than the original one. Also, not that the light-bar isn’t conspicuous on the original one because it is white but we all know that light glows and shines more prominently with the black background and when it does, it looks magnificent and majestic. It is no different with this spectacular midnight black controller. It has matte finish on its front body and touchpad and high gloss finish on its D-pad and Action buttons, a combination, which, in my opinion sometimes also looks like a prop from heavy budget sci-fi movie. I don’t think I even have to talk about the kind of immersive experience adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and its speaker provide as all PS5 owners would know that by now. However, if you ask for recommendation on this variant of Dualsense, I feel every hardcore PlayStation fan should buy this one as they won’t regret it.Absolute masterpiece.

The controller and paddles seem very sturdy, but the biggest disadvantage is that there's only a maximum of 2 paddles for the back which is definitely insufficient. 4 paddle options for the rear would have made this worth the $216.00 price tag! I hope Sony didn't short us now only to release a "Pro Edge Elite" version down the line with 4 paddles! I play with my controllers plugged in so battery life is not an issue for me. The feature to adjust the Stick Sensitivity and Deadzones is the next best feature. This is a great advancement for shooter games like Apex and COD. Settings like the Quick, Dynamic, and Digital Curve Adjustments really make a difference for how your player movement and aim take effect in game. If you tweak these with the right in game settings as well, you can set up some godlike aim and movement (after getting use to it ofcourse)! I wish the controller was lighter, perhaps offering an option to sell some without the rumble would be nice. I also bought a Hypr Controller at the same time so while reviewing the Edge, i'm also comparing it to the Hypr one. I would have to give the upper hand to Hypr with a score of 8.3 and not without good reason. First off, the Hypr Controller cost me $250, has 4 remappable back buttons (not paddles, which makes it easier and more comfortable to hold). I had an option to customize my own colors and it's just like a stock dualsense except better because i had the option to remove the "rumble pack" which makes that controller light as a feather and the best thing to hold. The Quick mechanical triggers are far better than the Edge and, even the interchangeable toggles have a way better texture design and grip to them as opposed to the standard Sony toggle designs. The Hypr anti sweat grip option on the rear is also much better than the Edge's rear. The Edge in my opinion still feels a little slippery compared to Hypr's. So for me, there were more and also better options that Hypr offered only for $35 more which is not bad. The biggest concern ofcourse, is that there's no option to change the Joystick Module like the Edge has, so eventually, months down the line, this Hypr controller will become useless and need repair or replacement. If i'm not mistaken, there was a class action lawsuit against Sony for their stick drift issues on their controllers and it's nice to see Sony make them replaceable on the Dualsense Edge. I wasn't happy that my 2 regular Dualsense controllers suffered severe stick issues making them useless which prompted me to spend more money on newer controllers now. Also, the replaceable Toggles should cost more like $12 each and not $20. Thats almost a brand new regular dualsense for the price of 2 stick modules! Come on Sony! We already paid a premium price for a less advanced dualnsense edge compared to the competition out there, don't nickel and dime us for every bit of the pie! Needless to say the Hypr controller doesn't feel as sturdy as the Edge controller, the mute button and option buttons are difficult to press in which make the craftmanship a little questionable. Hypr is located out of the US so it takes a while for build and delivery. More importantly, i have switched between both controllers during games and for some reason, my aim is more accurate and laser like with the Hypr one. I've tested this out A Lot and i still don't get why because there is no option to make extra Curve Adjustments for the Hypr controller, its just like a stock dualsense. But, for whatever reason, Aiming and shooting my targets especially on Apex is always more accurate with the Hypr controller. I expect this to get worse as the controller gets the inevitable stick drift though. So for this reason, and because it has more options to customize for performance (removable rumble, 4 remappable buttons, quick triggers, rear grip, grippy toggles), and comfortableness, Hypr gets a higher score but it's not too far from the Dualsense edge in utility. Sony has the upper hand with the replaceable stick modules, but, will the rest of the controller hold up over time? I guess only time will tell. So in summary, the Dualsense Edge is a great controller but when it's put against the other competitors for Performance Controllers, it's still lacking in some features and design. There are some great steps foward but also a couple backwards steps as well. If Sony plays things correctly, things can only get better going foward for future iterations!

With these controllers targetting "serious gamers" and competitive shooter gamers at that, it is likely that these buttons will be mapped to jump and or slide which are 2 of the most used movement per minute in comp FPS games. At a price point of 300$ after tax, I would have expected the integration of 4 back paddles however this controller only comes with 2.The FN buttons seem overall useless however I understand the idea behind them. One FN button would have worked fine and in a different location. Perhaps the back where it can't be seen. Perhaps they were included to justify the price of the replacement analog sticks as they are a part of the anolog stick. The analog stick mounting design is the best I've seen in any replaceable analog design as they're secure and hidden from wear and tear.Overall I am content with this purchase but not amazed or "floored" by any means. A company like Sony is capable of producing excellent products and I'm interested to see how the longevity of this controller holds up. If I can get 1 year out of the controller I will be satisfied with my purchase however I likely won't purchase again as Scuf controllers designs are far superior, add 10x the customization, and offer 4 back buttons/paddles. I understand that 4 may seem overwhelming and unnecessary however if you are going to spend the money, please purchase a controller with 4 paddles, take 2 off to start and then when you're comfortable with 2 more, add them. It is not easy to learn 4 new paddles at once it is much easier to learn 2 and then add 2.I have 180 days of play time between warzone 1 and warzone 2, and hold warzone records for highest kills in trio Quads.Overall 3/5 due to pricing, lack of buttons, forseeable planned obscelence, and Lak of customization offered by other aftermarket companies.

Most other "pro" controllers allow for four buttons on the back. The two buttons on the bottom are just function buttons and both have the same function, and cannot be mapped to another button as far as I'm aware. The "short" battery life isn't a concern to me because it's about 7.5 hours, which is plenty for me, and it's 'easy' (for me at least) to upgrade that battery, plus the controller comes with a high quality, 9 ft, braided cable, with a locking mechanism.This controller is definitely worth the money if you want two extra buttons on the back, adjustable triggers, customizable buttons and joysticks built into the controller, and premium case, and some other functions.
