The Sony 35mm 1.8 lens is a great all-purpose lens that is perfect for everyday use. I am a hybrid shooter, so I use this lens for both photography and videography. The image quality is excellent. This lens is also very versatile, performing well in a variety of shooting situations. I highly recommend the Sony 35mm 1.8 lens for anyone looking for a great all-around prime lens to start.

I know that many people who own this lens seem to get issues with color fringing, etc but in my experience this is often over-stated.The lens itself is extremely well made, has decent sharpness (you can get better, but it is still very good) and has very little in the way of chromatic aberrations, distortion, etc - especially once you get to an aperture of f2.8 or higher.The only issue I have with this lens is the price. When compared to other lenses of the same class for mirrorless cameras, it's actually not too bad. But when compared to Sony's own 50mm 1.8, with the same features and possibly superior sharpness.. double the cost is a little difficult to swallow.That maybe harsh given that the wider the angle, the more costly it becomes to produce a high ... If you are very short on funds.. still the 50mm and liberal use of your legs. If you have exactly $400+tax.. this lens.My personal choice is this lens and the 18-135 (or 18-105) because it is the perfect frame size for the photos I take. If I was more of a landscape shooter I'd replace this lens with a Sigma 19mm or the Sony 20mm. If I was a portrait shooter I would just get the 50mm or 85mm - depending on how close I wanted to get to my target.

Years ago I had the 24mp Sony RX1R with the Sony/Zeiss 35:2.0 lens. That camera and lens had a special magic to it, It rendered in a very unique way. I regrettably moved on from it because I found the one attached lens to limiting. I recently purchased the Sony 35mm FE 2.0 lens for my A7C and it has the same magic, similar close focusing ability, similar bokeh. I really appreciate the small size and enjoy it on my A7R3 as well. Could the 1.4 GM be better? Maybe but for the difference in speed I wouldn't want to carry it. My A7C kit consists of this lens and a compact 24 & 50. No zooms for me. I HIGHLY recommend this lens.

The 35mm focal length is a crowded field in the Sony E-Mount (B&H lists 25 lenses as of Dec 2020), but unfortunately (in my opinion) there is no lens that checks all the boxes yet.The Sony 35mm f/1.8 comes close: sharpness, weight, usability, nice damped manual control, good value (when on sale), and very effective and silent auto-focus. Very usable in both stills and video.It fails though in two areas: the first being rendering a blend image with a meh character, and the second its LoCa/color aberration/fringing.The latter was the killer feature for me. I bought this lens shortly after switching from Sony APSC to the Full Frame Sony a7iii. My preferred APSC setup had been using the FF Sony 28mm f/2.0 to achieve a normal 42mm equivalent FOV. Using a slightly wider FOV makes the 35mm focal length more multipurpose.This partially is a recommendation just for the 35mm focal length, but if you have to use one prime lens and one focal length for Sony FF, I think this still is the most versatile option. The f/2.8 35mm options from Sony/Zeiss and Samyang are serviceable (I've owned the Samyang), but unless you really value the smaller lens size, you'll miss out on the lower light performance. This transforms my FF camera with my 24-70 f2.8 With extended grip and big flash to almost a APS C camera without a grip and flash. The perfect walk around camera with instant accurate focus (better than the 85) that is great in low light without losing the beautiful FF look. To me 35 mm is much more useful than a 50mm without going fish eye. I personally prefer a 1.8 as it allows my wife and me to use it in auto mode with the kids. You don’t always want to be thinking about camera settings right? I have a few 1.4 lenses that don’t get me wrong I have taken some great pics with but I have missed focus also because of the small field of focus at f1.4 which ... The main deciding factor was focus breathing. There is a clear consensus online that the f/1.8 has less focus breathing than the 1.4. I would also be paying a lot more for less than 1 stop in the 1.4. So I made my choice and filmed my first short film. Very happy. Although at 1.8, the lens still shows focus breathing so it's not 100% perfect. It's subtle and probably only noticeable to any of us who are perfectionists.The internals also shift in weight when you tilt up or down, but not an issue even on a balanced gimbal. It is lightweight and incredibly small, and the focus is fast and dependable. So the sony a7 iv has a feature where you can tap the screen to put the focus in track mode. This feature is amazing when you have multiple subjects in the frame, and eye focus is having issues. Also, as a note of reference, I shoot Pany S1's with 35 1.4 and 85. 1.4 and just switched from a pany s5 and pany 35mm to the sony as a fly cam. It's just a characteristic of this lens that it feels like something heavy is shifting back and forth inside until you mount it and power up your camera.So here's the good: 1. Sharp - no surprise as it's a modern lens and they're all pretty sharp these days. 2. Form factor - this is a small, light lens. Perfect for travel or street photography as it wont scare people away. 3. Overall I do think this is a very nice lens at ~$500, but $750 is paying the there's nothing else in 35mm this small and fast for Sony premium. This gem works extremely fast and accurately with both face/eye-AF on both humans and animals and in any light. I have used it in a dark room with a 25 watt bulb and it easily locks onto either an eye or face. The background separation and bokeh is soft and round with no onion rings. The build quality is very nice for the weight. Having the focus hold button and AF/MF switch close to each other is a nice feature and makes switching easy. The focus hold button can be easily converted to whatever fits your needs. I use it for eye AF. The lens has great colors with nice contrast. Of course everyone would love cheaper lenses, but the quality of this lens makes me wonder why Sony didn’t make it a G lens. There are a few one star reviews I’ve seen which are highly suspicious.
